All I know is, it's too easy to get upset over this stuff. and the

You see the subject line, and you think 'how ridiculous.'

Exactly.

PS Cheese and Metro Area. Cheesy music is just emotionally effective
music that people relate to immediately. Only it's gone way over the
line into bathos and pandering. There's a whole lot of awesome that
happens when someone tiptoes right up to that line without crossing
it.

That's simplifying things. My comments were said that sampling and
adding some rhymes didn't constitute pushing things in new directions.
I enjoy a lot of that stuff quite a bit, but it's popcorn. There's
nothing -wrong- with popcorn, and I like a lot of music that has no
aims except to entertain but if it walks like a duck, quacks like
a duck, it's not pushing things.

In what ways do you think hip hop producers have pushed technology
forward lately? I don't think they've pushed that much on anything
for the last twenty years or so. I think a majority of popular hip
hop over the last few decades have just been a series of funk and soul
samples cut up for pop sensibilities, with a good amount of raiding
the electronic music side of things for instrumentation and software.
When 'new' sounds crop up to popular rotation in hip hop, it usually
just sounds like a specific kit on reason or somethingLook at any
of the very top selling artists over the last 15 years or so, Dre,
Snoop, 2Pac, WuTang, Ghostface, Kanye, etc all the popular acts, they
have a good chunk of their best selling music that are repackaged
soul/funk songs with new lyrics. This doesn't mean it's not fun music,
just not really pushing.

I guess I could say the same thing about the top selling electronic
artists though, that's mostly been the same boring sh*t remixed and
repackaged for years now hmmm

Re: (313) Kanye's New LP

2008-12-02 Thread JT Stewart
I didn't really dig any of the new Kanye stuff I heard, but I like him
fine. He is an open-minded music fan. Soultek (aka Echospace and sorta
part of Deepchord now? Dunno) was at a studio in Chicago a few years
back and was recording/playing some of his stuff...Kanya was hanging
out in the commons room or something and was really excited about it
and was also apparently super nice. So there's a totally mangled and
silly second hand story but still...cool.

I love autotune, I just didn't get into the new Kanya stuff. But he's
definitely an artist and legitimate music fan and not just mainstream
crap you can write off as mainstream crap.

I've been really into that Beyonce Single Ladies song for like 3 days
so far. I like the beat, techno/dubstep (or whateverstep) bite but
it's nice...pads wooo! and the video is super.

(313) link change re Andrew Duke In The Mix show

2008-12-02 Thread Andrew Duke

The apostrophe in "Andrew Duke's In The Mix" was
causing problems giving some people a bad link,
so I've dropped it and thus have had to change several links
(both to the main page--see below--and the MP3s on that page):

http://cognitionaudioworks.com/AndrewDukeInTheMix.html

is now the new link to the show page; on that page you'll find
the 01Dec08, 24Nov08, and 17Nov08 shows, plus
the mixes from Daniel Bell and Minto George, the
live PA from Stewart Walker, and the interview with Aux 88.

Apologies to those who got bad links and hopefully these
slight changes will make it work now for everybody.
Take care and thanks for listening. Andrew

fyi, just a few years back, juan atkins played a cutup of cybotron ala
missyand jeff mills, eg, samples a paid in full on shifty disco...
examples of the interchange between between hip hop and techno

although, at the moment, i wouldnt spend a buck on kanye's album, one
cannot deny that hiphop producers certainly do push technology
forward.

ps, to all the naysayers of metro area's fabric cd...are you kidding me?

Haha, strange how people latch onto things, the main problem with the
song is it doesn't really go anywhere - it's like a mid-priced Rover
being driven by an OAP in rush-hour.

I loved the statement he made about Bush and it needed saying but he
seems to have fail foul of ever popstar cliche in the book, I can't
wait to see his vile tacky house on cribs!

I didn't like the Metro Area mix at all but then again I don't like
disco much, not even Devo could save it for me! The Tejada mix is
getting a few plays around the studio. Petar Dundov's Escapements and
Extrawelt's new one seem to be the favourites at the moment tho both
highly recommended.

Yeah but there is cheese and then there is cheese. I wouldn't have thick
slices of blue stilton on a few rounds of toast. I just wouldn't.

The mix is alright. Nowt staggering but certainly not offensive.

Cheese from Metro Area? Perish the thought :)

I thought that's what everyone liked about them, it's cheese you can
enjoy and not feel bad about.

My point is it doesn't add anything to the mix, there's really no need for
it.

I still like the CD though & would recommend it, especially if you like
Metro Area anyway.

Kind regards,
