The way I see it is, when you just use Abelton and a midi controller,
it's not really live. It's just pressing play and tweaking a few knobs.

Subject: (313) What does "Live" mean these days?

This is not a snarky question, I'm just curious what that actually
means in these modern times of ableton live? Looking at the Demf
lineup I saw plenty of (live) next to some names, and I'm wondering if
that really has much meaning anymore? As more and more people are
switching to laptops with built-in manipulation capabilities, it seems
that designation is becoming far less special. As always it matters
what you do with what you have in front of you, but it might be a very
arbitrary term sooner rather than later.

I'm not nearly as old school as most of you but I do remember when
live meant you had a rack of gear in front of you and you were piecing
together/reshaping music on the fly. I'm not getting into the argument
about the regular vinyl DJ creating music, I believe that, too, but
you don't see "live" next to a traditional vinyl set, and I get the
feeling some of the new "live" stuff isn't very far from it, just mp3
tracks with a little laptop FX help.

Anyway, thoughts?

(313) New Music

2009-04-17 Thread robin

OK, I can't bear to see the list descend into the usual nonsense about
formats so can we talk about music?

Some new stuff that's lighting my fire right now.

Culoe de Song - The Bright Forest - Innervisions

Wicked little debut. Two tracks (three on digital) all of high quality
but it's the title track that kills it for me. Along the lines of the
epic NY house sound (Sydenham/Chandler etc) but with just a little
more UR to it. Proper awesome sound. It's hard to get an idea of what
this sounds like from clips so check his RA podcast (with a preview of
his upcoming Reggie Dokes remix on Boddhi Satva's label). This kid's
still a teenager as far as I can tell - amazing.

BLM - Believe in Love - Fear of Flying
OK, rocking a 90s Detroit house style but this is done so nicely it's
hard to resist. Arguably you could say this another UR inspired cut. I
hanker for more house gear from the Submerge camp...

Trackleton - While My Sequencer Gently Weeps - Yore
Solid pulsating techno sounding a little like Osborne on a good day.
OK, I'm not great shakes as a record reviewer but I love this :)

Nebraska - Satellite Variations - Rush Hour
More Nebraska awesomeness from Alistair Gibbs. These are older cuts
that, given the style, should sound dated. They don't though, well
worth picking up. There's also the Terrestrial Variations EP out too
that I haven't picked up yet.

Kode 9 - Black Sun - Hyperdub
Like the 'broken' scene occasionally served up some proper techno so
the dubstep scene does the same. Both tracks on this ep worth checking.

Martyn - All I Have is Memories - Apple Pips
OK, I'm well late but I like the airy summery vibe to this. In a slow
mid-90s DnB way. 'Suburbia' on the flip is more on the dubstep vibe.

Martyn also does house, check his mix of Ican's 'Caminos Del Ninos'.

I guess that I'll add my .002 cents.

If I am playing music that you'd never hear otherwise
(djing/mixing my own tracks that aren't out and available), I don't
think it is live. If I am creating pattens and sounds on the
fly...well maybe it is live. Shawn Rudiman is a great example of a
live performance. He uses the old machines that techno was built on
to do his performances. Anything can (and usually does) happen.

I used to do a live P.A. in the 90's when I had gear. Now I use a
computer for all of this stuff (with bits of things thrown in for
extra fun(k). However, many performers/artists nowadays want to have
so much control over their sets that they are canned. At the end of
the day (or night), does it really matter? If it moves you then it
moves you. If not, what is the point?

That's overly arbitrary and quite unfair. There are many ways to use Ableton.

As far as I know, most people use Ableton in a live situation in "Clip
Mode", where each "clip" is a separate percussion loop, synth part,
etc. Starting and stopping the clips is really no different than
starting and stopping tracks on an MMT-8. You push a button or turn a
knob on a controller instead of pushing one of the track buttons on an
MMT-8 in order to "arrange" a track on-the-fly.

Yes, you can just push play in Ableton and tweak a few knobs. But
that's nothing new. You could load entire song sequences into an
MMT-8, or any other sequencer, and push play and tweak a few knobs as
well. There's really no reason to accuse Ableton of allowing some sort
of cheating/simple performance that wasn't possible before. Anybody
who wants to perform a canned set has been able to perform a canned
set for a couple decades now.

The truth is that Ableton is a great performance tool with many more
possibilities than any old hardware sequencer + sampler combo. I think
what you guys are criticizing is endemic to laptop performances in
general and not Ableton per se. Yes laptops homogenize performances,
and don't provide much in the way of appreciable performance for most
audiences, what's going on back there is usually a mystery. The easy
availability of Ableton, to anybody and their mom who wants to do a
"liveset", perhaps makes it seem like anybody can do it. Personally I
think using an MMT-8 was easier (the instructions are in the lid FFS!)
and provided considerable oppurtunity to "cheat" as well, that's
sequenced music for ya.

I think that the distinction between 'Live' and 'Not Live' is blurred
at this point to where it's meaningless. I've had the privilege of
watching the two performers who have put the most effort into their
'live' performances up close: Shawn Rudiman and Stewart Walker. They
both have put a huge effort into making their performance mean
something more than pressing 'play.'

And they both build their sets out of preprogrammed patterns. Shawn
works his drum machines in write mode, but any time I've seen him play
he has an MMT8 full of patterns to drive his synths. Stewart will
even occasionally drop a complete track into his set, but only if it's
one of his tracks that's so old he doesn't have separate parts for it.
For both guys, they're making dozens of decisions every minute about
how to shape their music, and their goal is to engage their audience.

What makes their performances 'live' isn't how much of the music
they're playing in real time, it's how they make the music interactive
with the audience, and it's whether or not their music is engaging and
enjoyable.

If people want to be pure about live performances, they need to give
up techno and go back to watching live bands. I enjoy both, myself,
but I've been bored to tears at shows where every note was played by a
musician with their hands. When it comes right down to it, playing a
song on a guitar is every bit as much a pre-programmed experience as
playing loops on a computer. What makes it good or bad is in the
realm of intangibles. Does the performer react to and shape the
energy of the room? Does the performer project charisma?

My father is a Symphony Conductor, and the same questions pertain. A
bad conductor is, in essence, pressing 'play' and the orchestra just
goes off and does their thing. Having played myself in orchestras for
crappy conductors, I know for a fact that they're little more than
human metronomes or worse -- they're unreliable human metronomes, and
the orchestra has to ignore them and listen to each other or
everything goes wrong. A great conductor has established rapport with
his orchestra, and knows how to coax or bully a meaningful performance
out of them, sometimes with little more than eye contact and a tiny
gesture.

So that's what it comes down to -- does it signify? Does it affect you
emotionally? Is it pleasurable? There's no absolute measure of the
methods behind the performance that determines whether it's good or
not. It's fashionable in some circles to look down on laptops, no
matter who is using them. I think that's a load of crap.

Satellite Variations is the one that's a few years old. Terrestrial

Good ol MMT8s. When Shawn Rudiman played here, one of the things we
did in my studio is record the tape dump from his MMT8 to the computer
and burn it to an audio CD, so that when his crashed he could reload

made the wrong move. Don't know if he ever reloaded it from the CD

Yes, love how you explained this, Kent. Clearly there's no hard and
fast answer, and that's what I love about listening to music, seeing
it performed, and talking/writing about it. Everyone could
potentially have completely unique experiences and ideas and feel
passionately about them. And that's how I feel about all these types
of debates - format, performance, the importance of identity and
background - there are so many possible interpretations. I've written
about this on my blog :) plug plug.

I remember with fondness the days when I used 2 MMT-8s for sequencing.
Mind, one of the last all-hardware live gigs I did was f*cked up by having

I don't understand. Why should they sound dated?

I had in mind the remix of My Father and Flourescent Door. Looped,
disco influenced tracks, could even be in the French style but as I

Satellite Variations is the one that's a few years old. Terrestrial

Ah OK. Y'know from the clips it's the Terrestrial 12 that I wanted the

Buy the album on Down Low Music please !

Done. Those Soul223 mixes don't mess about either. Ace.

"The Dust Brothers" meaning the Chemical Brothers, who had to change
names when they signed in the US because of the US Dust Brothers, who
worked with Beastie Boys. You may already have known that but
consider the kids -- some 313'er were in diapers in 1994.

And "Chemical Beats" from the "14th Century Sky" EP is a fantastic
track featuring distorted 303. The first couple of EPs by those guys
were pretty great actually, too bad about them churning out all the
BLOCK ROCKING sh1t that followed.

Re: (313) What does "Live" mean these days?

2009-04-17 Thread Benoît Pueyo

Actually most the big rock bands do pre-programmed sets during their 'live'.
The order of the tracks, their lengths etc. Its everything but
spontaneaous. The good proof for that is that all the lights and visuals
are pre-programmed (just go next to the light jockey in a rock live, he
has next to his setup the full line up of the live with timed comments
showing what he has to do at this or that moment).

This can sound disppointing but there's still he interest of
seeing/hearing your favourite band playing different versions of their
own tracks and interacting with a crowd.

When it comes to techno its all about the same to me : wether the
performer plays the instruments live or does something more
pre-programmed is not important. And its not linked to the gear used
(both ableton and regular gear can be used live or pre-programmed). What
is important is the charisma and the visuals, which are a good part
(except the music and how it interacts with the people) of the crowd
satisfaction.

Its not nostalgic to say that ableton sets are less charismatic than
good old gear lives. That can end to this digital/vinyl DJ discussion,
but the difference is that 'live' is most of the time promoted as
'better' of 'more exceptional' that the regular DJ set.

Benoît.

Another thing to look forward to: I am happy to announce a new 12" by

hot Detroit techno stuff, great for the dancefloor.
Also in progress is the return of mighty techno don Gerard Hanson aka

(313) Mike Grant mixes- back in the day

2009-04-17 Thread ja...@iridite.com
Hey Ho- don't know where else these are available but we've got a
really nice slice of Detroit history for sale at the moment courtesy
of Mr Mike Grant and although I often don't post about items we're
specifically selling in case it's a conflict of interest, I doubt
there's a 313 list subscriber that wouldn't be interested in hearing
these:

"These are direct from Mike Grant himself and they are uber limited!!
This mix CD is taken from a tape of Mike Grant spinning at the
University of Detroit in 1985. Part 2 has some freestyle from John
Rocca plus early Model 500 and heaps of 80's electro. Read on for a
few words from Mike himself.

"I just finished some mixed CDs which are a little "special" in that
they are reflective of the climate of Detroit around 1985. Two are
from cassettes recorded at The University of Detroit right before I
went into the Army"

"As it was 45 mins a side I looked to do something different and
added some dialogue to fill the empty space and setup the mix. The
other two mixes are reflective of the different classes we associated
ourselves with back then: Jits (from the East side, a little rougher
stuff like Egyptian Lover, Model 500, some LA techno-hop, Twilight 22,
and some Miami freestyle) and Preps (from the West side, more
alternative, New Order, Viscous Pink, Ian Dury, The Pet Shop Boys, and
The Clash."

"As I was recording old cassettes I thought It'd be cool to present a
live look at one of the parties from back in the day. The U of D gig
was one I did before leaving for the U.S. Army in 1985. I was near the
top of the DJ pyramid at the time being a member of WJLB's Street Beat
mix show but had already made the commitment. I also thought back on
how the city seemed divided East and West by Woodward Ave. In high
school then you were normal or associated yourself with the preppy or
jit crowd. Preps were into fashion and jits seemed to be into trouble.
Each had a different type of music associated with it (progressive or
urban). As there is a fascination with Detroit's history this is just
a taste of what can be found in my archives, look for more of the past
in the future..."

http://rubadub.co.uk/?node_id=1.3&id=24783

These CD's are realy.excellent - I enjoyed hearing music that I
knew from that period and being assured that it was also influencing
the guys in Detroit that would go on to influence me (and countless
others) in their music making journeys.

cheers

Jason
