That's an interesting one David - certainly his blending of his own musicality with samples is truly seamless sometimes and he creates stuff that's greater than the sum of it's parts - the arrangements are indeed pretty epic. I haven't been so keen on most of his work in the last few years but he's definitely more talented than the average joe. jason On 3 September 2011 03:38, David Powers cybo...@gmail.com wrote: Okay, here's some controversy. In my (quite serious) opinion, THE most INFLUENTIAL and IMPORTANT Detroit techno artist is ... wait for it... MOODYMANN. I'm not joking, it may be considered house, but I think that the way Moodymann records are mixed and structured is quite forward thinking, and maybe the blueprint for things a lot of producers all over the world now are doing, but certainly were not doing when moodymann started doing his thing. Jeff Mills also has done some really forward thinking things with arrangements and mixing, but that aspect of his output hasn't really been that influential in comparison to Jeff's DJ style and his trackier side. The greatest Moodymann record of all time for me is actually recent by the way... it's 2 late 4 u and me!!! Discuss... ;-) ~David

It was awesome, in the way that TP is always awesome, but he let tracks ride more than he has in the past. Well, not quite real time! The A side has a long and dubby (no suprise there!) mix by Johannes Volk - it's a bit Dubby Techno by numbers but it grows on repeated listening. Much more interesting is the XDB mix on the other side - kind of reminds me of Iz and Diz at their best or a spacey Prescription Underground sort of thing. Best mix for me is actually the Patrice Scott Beatless Dub - lots of building atmospherics and pulsing bass lines with no regular kick drum - really well done (only a few mins long though) Anyone else got anything to listen too? I'm searching around our warehouse at the moment looking for the Shake Shaagan Electro remix - will stick it on when I find it! Tertio !! I could explain our point of view to mister May next friday : http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?278758 I've only heard excerpts of Patrice Scott Analog Dreams reworked here : http://soundcloud.com/the-secret-agency/sets/patrice-scott-analog-dreams I like the two remixes, but the Scott's beatless mix extracts the essence of this beautiful original track. Placid should be right about the 'colored NDATL Muzik' record Jason is spinning atthe moment, Anyway it could be this one too ? : http://www.discogs.com/Various-Music-Institute-20th-Anniversary-Pt-3-Of-3/release/2928438 I really like the B2 track on this one. A bit out of topic, though i wanted to mentioned this label : http://soundcloud.com/l-i-e-s All the releases are valuables, some has this Detroit-Techno beatdown feeling. --- K* Le 03/09/2011 15:54, ja...@iridite.com a écrit : I'll second that! RE: (313) Old School D: Terrence Parker
TP spins like Detroit DJ's of years ago. If you really take a listen to them, old-school guys like Kim James, Gary Chandler, Fingers, TP, Jeff Mills (when he was on the radio as The Wizard) all have a similar style of DJ'ing. If my memory serves me right, Even Hawtin had the same style when he did some radio stuff on either 97.9 or 96.3 back inna day. -Original Message- From: kent williams [mailto:chaircrus...@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2011 8:52 AM To: list 313 Subject: Re: (313) Old School D: Terrence Parker There's an aspect of performance to what Terrence does -- the scratching cutting. I think this is what Claude is referring to: http://www.madeevent.com/ElectricZoo/ http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2011/09/richie_hawtin_c.html And that's what you get for your $499 Platinum Experience. fh - I keep hearing great things about the Awakenings festival in Holland with people saying it's not like other festivals and a couple of good things in Croatia (think half of Glasgow went there this year.its the new Barcelona!) but I've not quite got the energy to go and find out for myself. LOL - I had never heard of those Above and Beyond guys but they were on the cover of some DJ magazine and I read their interview and thought these guys really think they're pretty big time then I googled them and they've done a million records and play every festival all over the world. (313) Here's one for you?
Should an artist, working with a label (who may or may not pay them) revise a tune that they (the artist) consider a 'complete' work? And if so, how far _should_ an artist compromise in order to satisfy the desires of a label? Curious to see your answers 313ers! -- fbk sleepengineering/absoloop US
Re: (313) Here's one for you?
I've been on both sides of that scenario and here's my thought: From an artist's point of view, it may depend on how much he/she is willing to be on the release/label. I've revised what I thought was complete in order to satisfy the label and fulfill their needs/feedback etc. If it's not that big of a deal to them then they can politely back down. From a label's point of view, the music must take priority over the artist/label relationship. That said, the label should give plenty of direction from the beginning so as to minimize the amount of redo's/revisits. Lastly, the artist should be somewhat familiar with the label and the sound it represents prior to submitting a track. They shouldn't just blindly submit something that they may feel is complete, but with little or no regard for the label's sound. I go through Drexciya-fests every now and then, though not to the extent you are right now. Twenty-four hours of the same artist sounds arduous, though. I can't imagine listening to that much of anyone's music, except maybe Atom Heart or Pierre Henry. My favorite is still Neptune's Lair, especially Running Out of Space and Lost Vessel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwqjYhoiKzs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esOSZtSe05E The Other People Place always hits the spot too! {}0+| On 9/1/2011 6:34 PM, Frank Glazer wrote: Since August 1st I've been trying to concentrate entirely on devouring the oeuvre of Gerald Donald and James Stinson (R.I.P.). We're talking about 24 full hours of music over about 45-50 albums, EPs, and singles including all their various pseudonyms. The reason I am doing this is because I find their music to be relatively tricky to wrap my head around in general, while so many of my friends consider Stinson/Donald to be among the best of their contemporaries. Specifically a lot of Stinson/Donald tunes sound particularly chaotic even to my modern ears well trained in noise, avant garde, and the repetitive loops of minimal classical (Steve Reich, Philip Glass) and techno music. I wondered if completely saturating my ears with only their music would change my opinion/enlighten me to their supposed genius at all. To date I am about halfway through the project based on mostly casual subway ride listening, and I've not been as diligent in avoiding the fast forward button as I'd hoped I could be. It's really difficult to stick to one artist who produced a pretty consistent style of music without listening to anything else for such an extended period of time. I do occasionally give my ears a bit of a break and allow myself to hear some non Stinson/Donald tunage. To date Wavejumper from their 1995 Aquatic Invasion EP remains my absolute favorite Drexciya tune: http://youtu.be/imKh_TKqHt4 As a side note, the name I've given this experiment - Drexciyan Immersion Project - is a kind of funny nod to the sci-fi underwater mythology that Drexciya built around their music/built their music around. Personally, whether writing an article for publication, designing sounds for sale by a sound provider, recording songs for release by a label, or doing a remix, I appreciate constructive criticism. By your usage of the word compromise, IMO, you're implying that you feel suggestions for changes to a submission are inappropriate. But maybe they'll make the song in question better. I say keep an open mind and see what the result is. Hope this helps. Andrew

I am curious as to the thoughts, feelings of others on this subject...just opening up a discussion since there are a bunch of us artist types on this list...I felt like since we were going retro on the 313 list this week, I'd bring up a 'would you rather' type of question...just to add to all of our activity:) @Joe: Well put. @ Jason: Well said as well...I tend to agree with this sentiment...however, I feel like there are times that change can be good since many of us as artists tend to isolate rather than explore.
