Re: (313) Louis Haiman /Chris Schubert/ Bill VanLoo

2006-11-14 Thread Bill Van Loo
I just took a spin through some of the samples on Louis Haiman's CDBaby
page, and it sounds like great stuff. Very Detroit Escalator
Company-ish. I have this great story about Louis's music, too - the kind
of thing you wouldn't believe if it hadn't happened to you!

I was walking in Harmonie Park one day (I worked down there for a number
of years) and Derrick May pulls up in a convertible. I'd met him a few
times before, so I talked to him, and he said something like here's
this great demo I got, check it out, and hands me a CD-R with Louis H
written on it in marker. I still have that, and it's great material! I
need to pull that disc back out, in fact...

Thanks for the kind words about my record, too, Jeff!

Bill

Has the new Haiman been mentioned on the list yet?
It really, really should be. Louis has outdone himself. Deep, lush
Detroity-techno.
I know Chris Schubert's debut was discussed briefly (redefines
'pop-ambient' with -imho- great success) and I wholeheartedly agree
with the positive assessments.

Fwdthought is really dishing up some lovely music.
Big 'hats-off' to Mr. Haiman.
And while I'm at it, Bill VanLoo's Chromedecay pt.2 is a really fine
piece of work as well. It's not straight 313, but has 2 really fine,
deep, pure-this-listy tracks on it which will make you salivate -
along with the rest of his work, which moves through other genres, but
is definitely a worthy acquisition.

(313) hello, old friends.

2006-10-18 Thread Bill Van Loo

Hi there.

I was browsing the (313) archives recently, and realized that it might
be fun to get back into this conversation after being absent for a few
years. I recognized a lot of the names that I saw in the 2006 archives
still, which is a good sign (Kent, Matt McQueen, Minto, Tristan, and on
and on), so hopefully the ground hasn't shifted beyond recognition.

What really sparked my thought of getting back to the list was when I
was writing the liner notes for the record of mine that just came out,
entitled chromedecay tracks pt2: 2001-2005. I included the (313) list
in my thank yous, because it really was such a huge part of my musical
development for a number of years, and I thought it fitting to get back
to it and see how things are.

   http://www.chromedecay.org/releases/cd003/

A little catch-up may be in order here. In the last 4 years, I've been
actively producing music (some of which is compiled on chromedecay
tracks pt2), involved in the Windsor-Detroit collective Thinkbox, became
a father a few times over (3 kids now), and became a Christian. All of
these have changed my life in many ways, of course, and so I approach
things from a perspective that's different from 4 years ago, but
hopefully in a new and vibrant way.

For those of you who remember me, I'm glad to be back. For those of you
who weren't on this list when I left a few years back, I hope to

have some good conversations with you.

peace,

Bill Van Loo

(313) TP/Romanthony

2004-09-15 Thread Bill Van Loo
 From: Matt MacQueen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

no kidding. there are such things as killer gospel house tracks...
it's just that nobody plays them. I wonder, Kent, is he dropping
anything by Romanthony, the stuff like the Testify releleases on
Black
Male are so thumpin. It was like a KDJ sound before KDJ, in a
 way...

TP is definitely the master of the gospel house jams.

Matt, to answer your question, yes, he's playing some of the
Romanthony stuff. Check his 3 downloadable mix sets page (though it
seems the 3rd mix, which contains a Romanthony track, isnt' available):

http://www.tpmusic.net/Test2/Mixes.htm

My church actually had TP out this summer for one of our worship in
the park events (along with Double Helix - Ypsilanti represent!) and
it was off the hook. The man is really an amazing DJ, and an awesome
Christian out there doing his thing, representing his faith in word
and deed.

I fully second Ben's recommendation of Ben Bracken. Super nice guy
and very inventive - a bold and interesting sound artist.

His sometime-partner-in-crime Persona (Eric Cook) is also playing,
which is a welcome and exciting addition to the lineup. Very happy to
see Jimmy Edgar (aka Krisuit Salu from m3rck records) on the lineup
as well; somebody mentioned him a few days ago regarding Detroit

The dopest broken beat I've heard is the Mustang remix of 4 Hero on
that ridiculously overpriced remixes disc from 2 pages. HOT stuff.

That notwithstanding, it's hard to beat some Photek tracks on 33 for
techno-speed breakbeats. I'm serious.

bvl

Phonopsia:
Oh - also, I plan on making a broken beat mix as sort of an overview for
people who might be trying to wrap their head around it. I don't claim to
have nearly enough of it, but what I've got should serve as a decent intro.
If anyone has any requests for inclusion on it, let me know off-list and
I'll see if I can work them in.

Cheers Tristan. I'd like to canvass opinion from anyone who cares to lend me
theirs on:

What do you think broken beat is? Is it a passing phase?

As for me, I admit to a broad stroke of ignorance. Save for the fact of
hearing stuff which would now be called broken beat, maybe seven years ago:
Example: Buckfunk 3000 - The Return Of Alphonso - on Trance Europe Express
vol 5. Also, some things which I currently like - e.g. Tempest by Kabuki
(Head to toe) I was recently told would fall in the 'broken-beat' category.

Is broken beat what you want it to be?!

However, it's hard to beat the closed hi-hat and handclap on that box.
It was DBX's hi-hat and clap box for a long time (most of the DBX

A final note - I remember hearing about a number of Chicago jack tracks

Re: [313] Soiree M records

2002-08-15 Thread Bill Van Loo

  Also Record Time's M record label (I think that's the name) - I
picked one
up @DEMF 01 and really liked the mix of tunes and would like to hear
more.
I've been looking on Record Times website but can't find anything -
help?

Record Time's label is called M3. M3 is the Michigan state-designated
code for Gratiot, the road Record Time in Roseville is on.

Cheers,

Yes, Atom Heart did the DOS Tracks :) record.

Check out a review more details at:

 http://www.datacide.org/ri051/

It was originally put out on Rather Interesting as a CD-only release, while the
vinyl was put out on Schematic a number of months ago.

Cheers,

Bill

 speaking on atom heart(tm),

does anyone know whether he was involved in the DOS Tracks record? (the
album is called :) i think)

also, since the Rather Interesting pressing was a re-release, who put out
 the original?

[313] Track ID (Shake, maybe?) for a friend

2002-06-13 Thread Bill Van Loo
I have a track ID request for a friend who's not on (313) any more:

Shake and Mike Clark both played this record at the Planet E party during DEMF
this year. It's got a simple kick, and really creepy weird
pads. It's also got vocal parts, one of which somebody says something like
there's a lot of magic in those vaults you probably haven't
even showed anyone, and there's a part where he says from chicago to detroit
and then to detroit loops for a long time.

Anybody? Sounds like it could be Shake to me, using some of his interview
samples, but it's not on What, me worry. I guess it could be
on Songs for my mother, which I have but haven't listened to in a
while...what other records are between Songs for... and What, me
worry, anyway?

As a not-unrelated side now: What, me worry is bad-ass. The hip-hop track on
it just rips my head off and hands it back. Wow.

Thanks,

Bill

Days Inn is probably a good choice - about a 10 minute walk to Hart Plaza, and
you have the added bonus of hitting The Clique restaraunt

Re: [313] slightly less OT - name recognition (was ozzy's kid a dj?)

2002-05-01 Thread Bill Van Loo
It's an interesting area though; what gets printed after DJs names on
ads/flyers. More often than not these days, it's a roll-call of labels this
person has recorded for - which of course tells you absolutely nothing about
 their background/rep/abilities as a DJ...

I don't know - I find it useful to know what labels a person's associated with.
At least having that information might give you some idea of
what sort of music they're about. This might be more true for live PAs than for
DJs, though.

It's even more confusing when DJs
don't play their own records. I remember going to see Rush play at Lost but
wondering why he wasn't playing his own productions. Frustrating for me,
because I really wanted to hear the stuff out, but then it's up to him what
 he spins, of course.

I do agree about this - I'd *love* to hear Theo Parrish play a set where he
plays some of his weirder material. That's primarily where my
interest in him lies - in those weird, messed-up sides he comes out with
(Dance of the Drunken Drums, etc), and not as much his DJing
(though that's top-notch as well, of course).
