Movement night 31st Jan Pistons VS Raptors - Carl Craig at 1/2 time
Just saw this from the movement fest instagram feed. Looks like Pistons and Movement are doing a night promoting the festival with Carl Craig performing at half at Little Caesars Arena. Just interested in this cross over. Gonna be hell interesting to hear stories what happens on the night. Any Pistons season ticket holders on the mailing list? Chris Wallis Melbourne - Australia

Remember, all of us do not live in Detroit or the US or have had first-hand contact with racial discrimination. Whilst that doesn't at all mean for one minute we're disagreeing with how blacks have been downtrodden in society, it means our exposure is different. In my eyes your points are more than valid but one's own experiences elicit a response, and whilst we can be more well read than in previous years thanks to technology, there's still a lot to learn for anyone who has not grown up with or been subject to this oppression. Humans are fickle and behaviour to get people on board needs to be constructive. Short answer, it would have been great if RA had of produced the piece in the way that has been discussed! Bottom line, Denise, you made Stephen dig deeper and read and learn and that's great, but don't beat him down further! Now to not be faceless, for those that don't know me I'm a white guy (who has some north African roots!) who grew up in Australia. Where does even one start to discuss what we've done to our Indigenous population. I live in London now, and I look around the office today and I can see people of all backgrounds getting on harmoniously - and that's London for you. Our racial issues, whilst still existing, pale in comparison with many other countries and cities. We've been spoiled, we can drive up to the D at a moments notice being only a 4.5 hr drive away. Which I feel is the limit on any last minute preparations. Well put. I found that all of the tricks he showed in that video lack any sort of musicality at all. I'd have rather heard the tracks in their original format on 2 turntables or cd players, mixed well, rather than with the faux breakdowns. It seems that a lot of djs, or producers, are showing up in the stage the capabilities of digital blending, the knob thrill just for the sake of it. Well, techno always had a thing about the process, not focusing on a begining or an end, but this tasteless knob thrill usually turns into a kid play, something like i'm having fun playing with my lego blocks, aren't you?. Well, it's not really that fun just watch someone else playing lego, cause there's no space for you to get in - the expression of the music was suposed to do that, bring the people into the playing. Lurker too here, and very late on this thread. Anyhow, saw spank rock in the UK I think two years ago now - unless they've improved dramatically live, in terms of all their members and all their sound, this band suck like no other, regardless of who they're ripping off. That's my tuppence. And you guys going heavy on the appropriation/real tip - who were the influences on the 'real', and on them, etc, etc. There's real, and meaning it, eg soul music or whatever, and then there's fashion posturing. RE: (313) Derrick May
My first experience seeing him spin was memorable like that too. It was at this big outdoor rave outside of Pittsburgh... He rolled in in a limo with two fine ladies, and proceeded to kill it!! I had never seen anyone attack records and a mixer like that, and it really made me appreciate what it means to get into it with the crowd, and not just play records. The best part was when some dude jumped up onto stage near the end of the set and picked up Derrick's headphones and was acting like a dick... In TOTALLY CLASSIC fashion, derrick stepped in front of the tables and in one swift move, he blasted the guy in the chest with both of his hands and threw him off of the stage! The stage was about 6 feet high. What I also remember about that night was hearing jaguar for the first time. Alan Oldham was playing, it was raining lightly, the lasers were crazy, and hearing that on a huge outdoor system was really nice. Name: Chris O'Connor Age: 32 Live: Pittsburgh, PA First thing that made me like electronic music: Hearing the Art of Noise Beat Box (diversion one) when I was 11 years old in 1983. I still remember the moment. Then I got into early hip hop stuff which, at the time was very hard to find. I used to stay up late with rigged antennas trying to pull in the distant college radio shows to tape them. Any time I traveled with my folks, I always had a radio with me to tape stuff being played in other cities. At an early age I had an obsessed with hearing and finding new music. Thankfully my parents gave me some money for it. First Party and exposure to techno: Function in Cleveland in 1998. All of the Swedish guys, Derrick May, Terry Mullan, and many more... I was totally blown away by the music and vibe. What was nice was that I was totally sober, and knew none of the names. It wasn't too much longer that I realized that the only way to get this music was on vinyl. So I went to a record store and bought Code Red 10 and UR Interstellar Fugitives. Haven't looked back since. Favorite Club: In Pittsburgh? Yeah right I did like Twilo (NYC) when I went there Favorite place for breakfast in Detroit: The Clique Favorite Beer: Bell's Two Hearted Ale Favorite Sets at any of the Festivals : Deep Chord live, Close 2nd the cpop stage one year with rick wade, norm talley, etc.

Re: (313) Festival Will Go ON!
That's fantastic news, especially after my 90 minute $hitty commute in the snow this morning. I can't wait for another 3 straight days of record shopping, music, and breakfast at the Clique'. --- that's what's up. I don't mind paying for admission either. (313) 7 centre holes - straw poll
I prefer the small holes like the UR 7's. The new Burial Mix 7's are really super tight on the stock Technics 45 adapter. Chris -- Original Message -- From: Paul Hammond [EMAIL PROTECTED] Can I conduct a straw poll please?: Small or large centre holes in 7 singles - what's your preference? (Keep it clean).

(313) Wayne Gardiner / Logic
Hello all, I was pretty curious after the recent space of Wayne Gardiner/UR posts so I popped into my local vinyl emporium today and found a copy of Wayne Gardiner's 'The Warning/Final Frontier' for a bargain 2 quid (about 3.5 dollars). I actually had a copy of this when it first came out but it got stolen many years ago. The one thing I thought when I heard it was 'wow, this still sounds pretty good' and then I looked at the label for the year of release. 1990, couldn't believe it !! This guy was at least 2 or 3 years ahead of other NY guys like Kerri Chandler etc. Sublime deep house with emotive chords which really draw you in. Interestingly enough to what Tristan was saying yesterday, I heard a part of the flip-side 'The Warning' which sounds exactly like part of the strings of Knight of The Jaguar. It's only a 15 second segment but it sounds almost identical. May be wishful thinking on my behalf but I wonder if any of the UR crowd were influenced by his tracks ? This guys got me hooked - can anyone recommend any other stuff that he did ? PS - Has anyone else noticed that Abacus remixed 'The Final Frontier' on the B-Side of his My Brazilian Love ep on Balance. The tracks called Phases. Chris ( aka Deep-House Trainspotter ;)
Re: (313) record insurance (OT)
Yes Robin, you're right about DC losing a large portion of his tunes in a fire. Think this happened about 5 years ago. Apparently he didn't lose all of them many of the records he owned which used to belong to Ron Hardy were safe. I pray something like this never happens to me. I got half of my collection stolen once and that was bad enough :( Subject: Re: (313) record insurance (OT) Speaking of, it seems like I heard Derrick Carter lost his house/record collection to a fire a few years back. Anyone know about this or am I dreaming this up? might have been derrick as well but i remember Maurice Fulton losing his whole collection a coupla years back. also happened to charlie hall (drum club/projex) a few years back too. i shudder to think how i'd feel if this happened to me robin...

(313) women vs records...
Well, it's a hard one. My records guarantee me instant aural ecstacy whenever I want. Like a power shower that's set to just the right temperature, you might even say. A smooth constant, steady flow when you've had enough you just cut the power. It can, however, be hard for women to compete with such lofty heights, once or twice a week if i'm...*cough*...you're lucky. The temperature ain't always right either - like when you get in from work and you're killing for a shower and the buggers running hot and cold all the time because you haven't 'flicked the right switches'. An interesting analogy anyhow, or something like that... (313) Name that tune...
Hello 313 Peepz, I heard this tune on the radio today that's been bugging me all afternoon - I was wondering if any of you could help ID it for me ? It did well (ish) in the charts, late 70's/early 80's disco/hi-nrg style track - sung by a well known group, possibly the Pointer Sisters ? Has featured in the soundtrack of nearly every 80's movie you've ever seen. Can probably also be found on your girlfriends 'Disco Divas' K-Tel compilation. Slightly cheesy but also not that bad. The chorus goes something like this Baby make you're move, put it on the line, make it one more time and.(la, la, la, la, la) - I forgot the last verse, ha,ha !!! - if you think this is tragic then you oughta hear me sing :( I'm more interested out of curiosity rather than anything else. Kevin Saunderson also played it at the KMS after-party at this years Movement Festival so I imagine that's what triggered the bugger in my head - please help me get it out !!! Chris.
(313) TP in Liverpool
Was anybody out there lucky enough to catch Terrence Parker at T:Funkshun in Liverpool, UK on Friday ? Unfortunately, I couldn't make it myself. Saw him play at the Feeling Moody 2 after-party during the Movement Fest; a living legend. It's a pity he doesn't come over to these shores more often. TP, if you're reading this, England needs you - please visit us more often !!! Chris.

(313) Detroit Record Shops, The Return of...
Record Time, Roseville closed over festival weekend due to flooding... Can anyone confirm whether this info is correct or not ?? Pretty gutted if it's true as not only is it a great record store but it also means one less place to shop during our short stay in the D. Having said that there's always Melodies Memories, Vibes and Record Time, Ferndale to visit whilst me and my homies are over for the fest. Can anyone out there tell me the best way to get from Melodies Memories to Vibes and the Record Time in Ferndale. Don't need precise directions - just enough info to give to a cab driver. Does anyone know what the opening hours are for Vibes also ? A friend has told me that it's only open certain days of the week - is this true ?? Any info would be much appreciated, Chris.

(313) (Used) record stores in the D
Hello, Just wondering if anyone knew of any good 2nd hand record stores in Detroit that specialise in hard-to-find, used house techno vinyl. Thanks, Chris.
(313) Ken Collier info
I've always been interested in tracing house/techno music's origins/influences and whenever you hear about Chicago the names Music Box Ron Hardy always come up. Whenever I hear people speak about Detroit, however, I always hear the name Ken Collier. I've not really heard much talk about Ken on this list and was wondering how much he REALLY influenced the local music scene. I know that he was a big influence on the likes of Derrick May Terrence Parker but apart from that little else. If anyone could set the record straight (and possibly provide links to any online mixes of his) i'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Chris.
