Second the e-music lots of 313 related labels both old and new and lots of other goodies the only problem I have with e-music is that it is subscription based with a use it or lose it policy. One of the biggest pluses is that once you have downloaded something, you may download it again as many times as you like. Kind of like having a permanent backup. I also got the Deadbeat album there and love love love it. Fantastic dub-tech feel a la Rhythm and Sound. I also use Traxsource occasionally for house David Max Mark wrote: These days i am pretty much on e-music, where i got the new deadbeat album ''roots wire'' witch is pretty good indeed. So this is how I gather things to be: funny enough I go to discogs.com marketplace first, because I mostly want to buy old detroit records and out of print stuff. for new, I do the following: read forced exposure new releases go to the local NYC stores (etherea first on Ave a - though it's a little hipster minimal for me, Halcyon in brooklyn - though it's a little hip hop for me, and only been to Dope Jams in Brooklyn once but they had tons of KDJ and deep detroit house). Hit up gramaphone everytime I come to Chicago. That's about it. Never done the clone thing, though I gather that might be great, other than shipping and currency exchange. ALSO! Anyone heard the Deadbeat - Roots and Wire album? Freaking nasty. Combination of quality reggae influenced vocal dub, really firm techno with some echo space flavor (without the minor, dark, sad chord feeling). I rarely get into anything dubby, but this has such nice techno recording quality. Really impressive.
Re: (313) Detroit The Auto Industry
it is not just the manufacturing jobs that are disappearing, it is all the jobs that we do not associate with the auto industry: accounting firms, advertising firms, legal firms, parts providers, restaurants built near offices etc...etc...etc... almost everything in Detroit touches some aspect of the auto industry while a good part of me says serves the auto industry right for lagging behind on technology and putting all resources into the now soured SUV and truck market the part of me that actually lives in Detroit wants them to get a bailout for the sake of this city as well as the connective web that the industry has across country. money though, will only stave off the inevitable without sweeping changes to both the big three as well as the UAW ( who certainly hold a good bit of the blame) and to bring this back to a 313 discussion, with the soured economy as it is now, very few people actually go out to events to support new music. More people are choosing to stay at home. less people means less money for promoters and artists as well as clubs/venues as someone who is recently unemployed, I can tell you that I am not going out unless I'm on the list or the event is free and even then drinks can get expensive. I'd like to throw some regular parties, but the numbers just aren't there as an example, I went to the Exchange Bureau record release party last week with John Arnold, Daz-I-Kue, Ibex, Paul Randolph, E Spleece, and more. there were maybe 150ppl there @ $5 a head = $750 (and I suspect that many of the people there got in for free) not nearly enough to pay for artists, sound, flights for out of towner's, venue cost etc...let alone make any money! John killed it by the way ( Daz-I-Kue watched every move John made then played a poorly mixed set himself) just some thoughts from Detroit David As it relates to music, all but the most successful musicians in Detroit have day jobs, and if the economy gets any worse, they're going to have to leave to survive ... I wouldn't say so, all the UK major cities have industries that have crashed and now disappeared. Sheffield, Bradford, Manchester and Birmingham all spring to mind. Good things come out of hard times... m

It's true Detroit is a great city to ride in I would not use a high end expensive bike though, some of the roads are worse than some trails I've been on. consider giving these guys a call or e-mail to set up a bike. http://backalleybikes.org they take old bikes and fix them up cheap or free if you volunteer they would probably let you rent one David UI Design wrote: I am a white girl who rides my bike every day during the summer, to work, to the store, even to the bars and clubs. I've never had a problem, other than the ongoing hellos from people as I pass by, that kind of freaked me out a bit at first because living in the UK, especially in Liverpool, people don't tend to say hello to people they don't know, but in Detroit, there is a strong sense of southern hospitality, people say hello to one another as they pass by, in elevators, on the streets, everywhere you go. Just as in every other city, there are places you wouldn't want to ride your bike, as it gets a bit dangerous, but during the daytime, I tend to not worry where I ride, just after dark I try to be cautious. People here do tend to bring there bikes into their apartments, so I'd suggest speaking to your hotel to see if they have an inside storage space for bikes. Bike riding in Detroit has become more and more popular, as the gas prices are very high. I tend to see 4-10 bike riders a day at the minimum in the summer and I work a 11-5, so I'm sure I miss the majority of good biking hours. It's a major city, so yes, you will be riding amongst a lot of highrises and parking lots, but theres also parks, the river walk, the graffitti mile (which will hopefully be renovated enough by DEMF you can ride from the lake front to Eastern Market). Detroit's very spread out, so you shouldn't expect to ride from downtown to Record Time Roseville for an outing, that would end up being a 20+ mile journey roundtrip. There are very cute neighborhoods that are a good ride-through, such as Woodbridge, which is about a 10 minute ride from Hart Plaza. I'd suggest a guide, though, for anything your doing in the city, especially if you've never been here before. If your interested in a bike tour around the city, I'd be willing to do a tour on the Saturday from noon till 2. Let me know. I know of 2 detroiters that have been pulled over for DUI ( both of them wasted) ,and had bags of weed on them and the cops let them go (one of them got to keep his bag too.) dui's are however a huge deal in the suburbs, so be careful out there. many of the afterparties are within walking distance of hart plaza and most downtown hotels, so it that be done as well. there are indeed buses and taxis avaiable downtown by hart plaza, but cabs are scarce outside of the downtown area, especially @ 5am Good ol' footpower, People Mover (a very short transit system), buses and our own vehicles. Re: (313) since I won't be at DEMF
true all dat! You really must have a car to get around in Detroit, or know someone with a car, you may be pretty screwed. And this does cause drunk driving - in my own case, I'm quite embarrased about driving to the burbs after the UR cabaret party (4 years ago?). But it's not like I could live my car there. I can't believe I didn't get pulled over! Anyone who might venture away from downtown, try to make friends with someone from the D who has a car. As a backup, I would suggest you get the number of a cab company that will pick you up, and make sure you have access to a cell phone. Even downtown I've been stranded with no cab in sight for over two hours. But you can usually get picked up, though it may take up to an hour. The buses also don't run at night... and the bus drivers did indeed walk out Wednesday, so the situation is very shaky. Be careful riding the buses: the bus drivers walked out, because they want cops to ride the buses, because driving them has become so dangerous. According to yahoo news: Gaffney said drivers are regularly assaulted physically and verbally abused aboard the buses. One driver was badly beaten on Tuesday evening by a passenger, he added. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070523/us_nm/detroit_buses_dc I can vouch for the danger of the buses: I lived downtown (on Woodward) for a very short time once, and got a short term job at the Detroit Zoo. I used the bus to get there. I saw a guy get in the bus driver's face and threaten to shoot him. Luckily some helpful bus riders managed to grab the guy and threw him out the door. ~David

These prices look ridiculous but they are not even that expensive for a classical orchestra. Don't forget that wages for classical musicians are high and that a orchestra has a lot of members... ... One bad thing for this year tho, Not nearly enough rsetrooms! evrything else excellent. - Original Message - From: Fred Heutte [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 2:04 am Subject: (313) Movement '03 It's all over now except for the shouting :) The good news is, it was a great festival. The bad news is -- hmm, I can't really think of anything. To the average attendee, I would bet this year's felt pretty much like the previous three -- and that is the result of a lot of incrediblyhard work. The staging, sound and lighting were all really good and there were few real problems. Things actually ran pretty close to schedule. Probably the two biggest changes this year, both for the good, were the lack of crass commercial hype (OK, Bacardi excepted) and the upgrade of the staging on all four stages: Movement (main stage): a great idea to move it down to the plaza level, it really helped the DJs and musicians connect better with the crowd, and I thought the sound was considerably better overall. High Tech Soul: this was in the small ampitheater area on the north side which had gone unused in previous festivals. A huge improvement for audience seating and the sound was also much better. Music Institute: the tent worked pretty well at enclosing the space and keeping focus on the music, and of course was welcome during the few rainy periods. And four-corner sound made another leap upward in quality. Underground: again, moving from the back (stage right) corner to the center made the performances much more visible and improved crowd circulation. Musically, it's hard to top what we got this year. I found more of sets and live performances perked up my jaded ears than the last couple years. In no particular order of importance, some of my highlights: Buzz Goree/Stacey Hale/K Hand back to back at the MI stage on Friday. Straight up great dance music. Ectomorph live, an even stronger show than they did in Portland Shake shaking the rafters of the tent with a superb funky set ranging from electropop to Radio Clash Matthew Dear with a well constructed live set that managed to walk the line between beats and abstraction Stacey Pullen's first hour was as good as I've heard from him in a long time, he really has learned how to move a big crowd (although that tendency kind of took over later in the set) Liquid Liquid was on fire, what a great performance that was, the energy was just tremendous Carlos Souffront/Marcellus Pittman/Norma Jean Bell played three really different and absorbing styles through the afternoon today on the main stage. Marcellus was a fill-in and he played a cool and jazzy set during the rain that kept the energy going. Dan Bell -- a terrific set, just the right balance of classics and new stuff with a steady, unhurried approach And what can I say about Jeff Mills, who just roared after the initial equipment problems. I'll say more about the pre and after parties elsewhere -- let the festival stand for itself. Today may have been my favorite single day of all four years. Total respect to Derrick May and everyone who made it happen. What a blast! phred
