The least visual of these three options though.

I saw Bjork earlier on in the year and her band were using the
Jazzmutant, the Reactable and the Tenori-On. The Jazzmutant was used in
just about every song except bar one where it was just a piano (or was
it a harpsicord?).

The Reactable was used in probably half the songs. Like theREALmxyzptlk
said, the palette seemed a bit limited. It looked pretty cool and the
crowd seemed to react pretty well to it.

And the Tenori-On got used once, perhaps twice. It looked cute but that
seemed to be about it.

The nice thing about the Bjork show was that there were quite a few
projectors giving almost as much airtime to the synths as they were to
Bjork herself. It was a very gear-nerd friendly show.

Since it's been a while (i think?) .. has anyone got any updates/info
on some of these systems .. reliability ? functionality ?

I use serato fs out on the odd occasion when I play out, as does my
quite a few of my friends. When I do see people using a digital dj setup
these days, I mostly see them using serato fs.

I haven't had any hassles with it crashing on me (yet). The latest
version has key correction (finally) and the beat looping is getting
there, although no where as tight as ableton or traktor.

The two main gripes I've had with it is:

1. crawling around in the dark in a dj booth trying to get it all setup
while another dj is playing without disturbing
2. sh*tty decks which are completely out of alignment, and make it
*really* hard to get serato synced up nicely. This has only happened to
me once and probably would've been less of a problem if I'd brought my
own needles. Lesson learnt (shouldn't learnt that one years ago with
normal vinyl).

Who have you seen on the circuit using these systems ??

I've seen A-Trak, Mix Master Mike (although he used it with CD decks),
Common's DJ (not sure of his name) and Diplo using it out amongst others.

The essential function I am looking for is the ability to cue a digital
 track
.. pitch adjust it into the mix using a turntable .. then release the
 track
from the turntable and then start the process on a new track.

Basically .. providing the ability to do multi deck mixing using only one
  turntable as a control device.

You can do that now with serato fs. Its a really great feature when
you've got a crap deck or a deck that's too close to a speaker stack
without decent sound proofing.

So I looked in dict.org and Google, and rhythim is not on the

So, can any of the english speakers here let me know if rhythim is

I still hope May meant rhythm... hehehe

I've read somewhere (perhaps in one or two interviews, and perhaps even

then, I reckon I've seen Rhythim is Rhythim spelt atleast 3 different

Garrett,

It would be important for some of us to be able to download these mixes
due to various reasons. For me, part of it is, that at my work mp3
content is filtered at the firewall, regardless of the transport that
its delivered by.

So my option is to listen to it at home. But, I don't really have the
time to sit down and listen to it when I'm at home (as much as I would
like to).

The way I've been listening to the mixes is that I download it at home
to my laptop and then when I'm at work, I listen to it while I work.
I've listened to the mixes a few times now.

Also, if I'd listened to the two previous shows straight off your web
server, that would have meant that it would have been the equivalent of
about 600MB downloaded, just for one person. But since I've downloaded
it to my laptop, its only been 150MB. A saving of bandwidth for both you
and me.

Another problem I have with streaming off webservers (depending on
capacity, network conjestion, etc) is that quite often the stream will
play, then buffer, then play for another 30 seconds, then buffer,
lather, rinse, repeat. ;-) It really makes it hard to enjoy something,
no matter how good it is.

Garrett McGrath wrote:

There's another verve remixed comp out and while most of the remixers on
board don't really interest me, I have to recommend this compilation simply
because Carl Craig's remix of Hugh Masekela's The Boy's Doin' It is
bloody amazing.

Sort of a cross between his Angola and Tides remixes + some trumpets,
cruising away at a lazy 104 bpm, he strips down the original, injects some
proper nice C2 goodness and you've got a deadly track that makes you wonder
why they ever bothered making music at any other tempo.

Fabulous stuff.

I guess my earlier years of going out to parties was going to warehouse
parties and doofs. The reason (along with the music) I liked it so much
was that there was no (or perhaps less) of a felt obligation to dress a

think it still quite like this in the Sydney techno scene, perhaps since
lots of people in it (and sydney techno in general) has come from that

So for me, while yeah, I agree that the clubbing scene at large has

the musical experience.

Going out to techno parties is pretty much a reason *not* to wear heels

It seems like everyone here is sending out regular emails about what
they have been listening to, which is great. Its always interesting to
check what people have been listening to. Which brings me to
Audioscrobbler.

Is anyone here using Audioscrobbler?

For those not familiar with it, you install a plugin into your media
player and it builds a profile of what music you listen to.

Here's my profile:

http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/rz1

You can check out what people listen to and it ties back in with a site
called last.fm. With last.fm you can listening to short audio snippets
(or full if you donate some money) of music people are listening to.

Its a nice way of checking out new/different music.

finally spent some money on some records. don't know how long it will be
before I get another chance since we're closing on a house in a month

picked up

Syclops - Mom the Video Broke (Tirk) Wow, Mr. Fulton is a genius. Freaked
out and spacey beats and massive funky acid basslines. B side quickens the
pace with practical drum bass tempo and live (?)jazz drum rhythms.

Dusk - Aquarian Project (Peacefrog) Seems my local shop has fallen back a
bit on new Peacefrog releases and this one has been sitting in the bins for
a good long time. I have to admit it took me a while to give it a good
listen. Glad I did, Shadow Boxing is one of those Basic Channel/Chain
Reaction inspired deep trancey groovers. Don't recall right now the tunes
on the other side.

New World Aquarium - Luvin' U or was it Heavy Metal (?) anyway - loved
the long track that's pretty much a bit of atmospheric sound, a few bleeps,
and a beat that fades and fades and fades to nothing. Fantastic. Was
looking for newer releases but apparently small European/UK labels don't
get ordered very often. Shame really.

did a bit of Gemm hunting and found all in one place:

Fusion - Galaxy of Future Visions (Ferox)
Miguel Graca - Up to the Sky (Ferox)
John Tejada - Sonic Life (Ferox)

Yeah! collect 'em all!

Things just seem clever to me because I'm not.
Easy enough to find the proper address of the .rm file (I think you

  e.g. http://www.faithfanzine.com/mixes/DMAY_kiss.rm

The actual direct link to the 11.8 Mbyte .rm file for the

  http://www.faithfanzine.com/mixes/derrickmay_kiss.rm

The direct link to the 29.4 Mbyte .rm file for the

  Derrick%20May%20Pure%20The%20Sunday%20Service%201993.rm

(In case that got automatically line-broken, you may have to
   cut'n'paste)

but then how do you download? (you'll have to spell it out for a
  non-clever like me)

  [10:06] nightowl:~/Desktop % uname -a
Darwin nightowl 7.8.0 Darwin Kernel Version 7.8.0: Wed Dec 22 14:26:17

  Everything's easier on a Macintosh :-)

Actually what I meant by 'you need clever software or a cleverly
set up PC to download or rip' was even after you've downloaded
(the bit I find I can't do) you either need something like
Streamripper to get it out of the .rm format or a PC that can
store as .wav, .mp3, whatever, anything you play on it.

MPlayer will do it. There's a beta release for Windoze at

  http://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/releases/win32-beta/

It's very easy to transcode Real streams to something else in
MPlayer from the UNIX command line (Macs, Linux boxes, Solaris
et al.) but I've no idea how you'd do it in Windoze ...

  - Greg

P.S. To any Mac users, it looks like Real released a new version
   (v325) of RealPlayer 10.0.0 (a new RealPlayer10GOLD.dmg
   disc image) ...

yes . but how exactly do a I make it available to you through those
networks .

For slsk, you'll just need to have your slsk client open and have the
file sitting in your shared music folder. Then either people can search
for the file name or find your name on slsk and grab the file that way

For bittorrent, you can use something like Azureus
(http://azureus.sf.net) to create a new torrent, then publish the
torrent file up on a bit torrent tracker site. I have a tracker setup on
my server that can be used for this purpose.

The good part of bit torrent is that as long as someone sticks around to
seed the file, you don't necessarily have to be the only one sharing it
out the whole time.

I need to go away and do my homework ' I have slsk on my mac . but
not the bit torrent ..

basically have stopped using them cause it's boredom and awfully more'ish

/ also is it true that slsk has stopped giving out usernames !

Not sure. i haven't used slsk for a while.

I guess most of you in the US and Europe have caught him long before us
