he's coming to Dublin this weekend and we're supposed to hook up.

Re: (313) minus pre-demf party?

2003-05-28 Thread Fixer
I do believe Sundays used to be Teen Nights in the summer. The cowboy
hat/sideburns guy was probably Stanley, a real nutcase that I'm surprised
they let anywhere near children :)

I worked in the Nectarine after Mills' day, after they remodelled and scaled
down in 89/90. I was a bartender in the Sludge Club mainly, with occasional
nights on security for big events. Those were the days, with Craig Tony
spinning techno, house, hip hop, dancehall, whatever and John DJ Cyberpunk
Courte upstairs spinning industrial techno...

Phonopsia writes:

Hmm... I'm certain I was there on Thursdays when I was 14, and I'm pretty
damn sure they did this on Sunday's through midnight too. Maybe they only
opened it for kiddies on Sundays during the Summer or something??? Dunno.
Mostly I was just curious if my first clubbing experience might have been
Mills. I had a memory of some dude in a cowboy hat with crazy sideburns, but
that booth used to be fairly obscured, so I wasn't sure who was on when,
etc.

Most music stays in it's semi-closed circles. Accordian music is very
very common in a lot of Europe, especially here in Ireland, which then fed
American bluegrass/appalachian music as well as cajun/zydeco.
You always have to look for things, it can't all come to you on it's own.

are kids who want to dance.

like folk music on an accordian? it's still there, you got to look

But the whole plastikman concept, the way richie markets his cd's and his

[313] best places for 313 events in europe

2002-04-15 Thread fixer
what are the best places you would recommend around Europe for a monthly
313 focused event? Not biggest places, and best is difficult to rate,
naturally. Mix of venue, sound system, and of course, appreciative
audiences. My preference is to avoid the biggest cities, where techno has
gotten a bit boring or routine.

My idea is to see if there would be 5 nights in 5 great venues, spread over
7-10 days. The local promoters would all share some tour travel expenses
for the DJ. The DJ gets 5 gigs on the one trip overseas (as opposed to most
who seem to fly in for one gig then back home for a while).

I'm based in Cork City, Ireland, which has always had quite a deep house
focus but techno seems to be coming on strong now. There are 3-4 clubs here
that would be okay (Henry's, Savoy, Half Moon, and a new place called One).

the other thing that might be possible is to solicit permission directly
from the copyright holders themselves. There are many independent and small
labels in our music, it would take work but they might all sign off on their

Underound Committee is an independent organization who set out to give you
quality Underground Music, thats all gone now. We can't afford the fees. It
all started with BMI. After numerous attempts to contact us, they finally
decided to just mail us the contract.

This is a sad day in the history of underground music. For many of us the
only way we can here the music that keeps us alive and sane is through
sites like undergroundcommittee.com.

But don't get it twisted. We can do something about this. It may take a
while, but we shouldn't be so caught up in our sadness that we don't ACT.
If you have not done so already contact your congressperson (in the case
of Americans), or DO SOMETHING. Write a letter to the editor...write an
editorial. Organize DJ's, have them contribute a few dollars to an ad
fund then place an ad in your local paper.

There are a number of possible activities to engage in.

Do SOMETHING.

Because on one level this is about the undegroundcommittee's phat website.
On another level, this is about saving our music and our music's culture.
But on yet a larger level this is about the freedom of information and
democratic discourse.

No bullshit.

I knew someone was going to open up that can of worms...

first, we'd all have to agree on definitions of what makes a dj Detroit.
Is it where they were born? Where they began playing? Where they

There will be no solution, no answer that will please everyone, and on

I lagged, and just yesterday booked my plane tix ($250 via priceline
from LAX to MIA) and now am looking for a room. Anyone with a
spare room in a condo or know of a cheap hotel with vacancies?

Only because it seems like I see a posting about every other day
or so, telling us he's on the air now and then another posting his
playlists. it gets quite repetitive to me. On a list like this, silence
is tacit approval, and I just needed to express my opinions on it.
Nothing against Marsel directly, just communicating.

Dear Fixer,

don´t know what other people on this list do think,
but for me his charts do make sense in this List...
as many people here post their advertising-stuff
new mp3´s etc..
Some do write fanmails about people
who take it fake it and break it.
What they do play at nortroute does make sense to me
on this list as the spirit of their selection ain´t no fake and
there´s always some detroit-tune or flava in there !

If all the mails would be Detroit-Only
I think you would be right
But as this list is full of other stuff,
and some of it is really bull,
I do wonder why did you pick out this one ???

Marsel, might I suggest forming your own list for people who are
interested in your broadcasts? Trust me, after as many times as
you have posted here, we all know you do them. We just don't all
care, and I personally am beyond bored seeing the notices.

My comments on the entire thing is that some people hold to tradition
way too strongly, and often for the wrong reasons. Are you willing
to argue that the 12 vinyl recording was the the best solution for
dance music dj's, or was it simply the only one available at the time?
A tangent, but why did Mad Mike use analog gear and tape editing?
because that's what he had most readily available to him at the time.
After that, it becomes the process he knew best, and gave the sounds
that people have come to associate with him.

Progress is a fine thing. The advent of the word processor did not
kill the written word, nor did it suddenly create a billion masterpieces
of literature.

I always did like Carl Craig's Landcruising. haven't listened to it in a while
to give more specific reasons why, but it's what jumped into my head.

As for just any old track that makes me remember my days in Detroit,
nothing brings me back to the Bankle Building more than JayDee's
Plastic Dreams. I still remember that night with Richie Dmitri playing.
Don't know if either of them played that track, but dammit, I'm old now
and my memory isn't what it used to be.

god, this is like Class Reunion time around here with this little walk
down memory lane...Before the techno scene hit the clubs in Detroit,
there was a lot of support for industrial and new wave and punk. I
remember going to Todd's Sway Bar and the once great City Club
as well...of course, St Andrews has been home to music of all flavours
since wy back...

TODDS
ALCOVE
CITY CLUB
 ST. ANDREWS etc

I'm back

2000-12-18 Thread Fixer
Hopefully there's still some people around who might remember me
from the old days...how long has it been, 4 years or something?
Anyhow, the music in LA still mostly sucks, but I am working on a
new business idea with Richie Hawtin and it revolves around dj's, so
I figured it was time to get back into the mix myself a wee bit.

So, nothing new to report, just saying hello.
