Carl did two remixes of Jaguar that were never released, he's been playing
one of them (a beatless version) for a few years now.

Hello!

I know Mad Mike's version and that's not what C2 played in Uppsala, Sweden,
a couple of years ago. I think it's Carl´s own version -the beat never
starts and the riff is doubled by some sort of bass sound, and the melody
repeats forever, right?

before. It's the beatless version and lasts maybe ten minutes (I presume).
Which one is it? Is it out on vinyl or is it CC's private CDR?

Sounds like the Reprise version from Mad Mike. It is on the 430West remix EP

Yes! I was wondering what this was as well? It does sound familiar. Anyone?
Also, I was wondering the Jit breakdown at the 13:00 minute mark is? Is this
an actual track or something they came up with for the live set?
Cheers!

Without a doubt the music from 88-91 had a bigger impact than any of the sub
genres that followed, as Alex mentioned that initial wave even reached us
here in the backwaters of the home counties. If you asked an 18 year old
now, they might disagree with me and claim (whatever kids listen to now) was
bigger and more important. Much of this may be because there weren't so many
sub-genres back then, and because it was fairly new the media were
sensationalising things which created an even bigger interest. From my
experience I found that people who got into music/raves later and were
championing happy hardcore etc. didn't stay with that genre too long, and
quickly moved off onto other genres - I wonder why that was?? ;-)

All down to space on the front panel, you can set the gain while you're
cueing up and shouldn't need to tweak it, whereas the EQs, sends, filter
etc. all need to be closer to hand while in the mix. Before I got a Xone 32
I thought it was a stupid place to have the gains, but after a week or so of
getting used to it I've never given it another thought. It's just a great
sounding well built piece of kit.

I think Gilles Petersen has done a great job of carrying the Radio One

...11th Hour Recordings European Tour : Launch Party...

It is with great pleasure that we contact you with details of the next
instalment of S.E.N.D. Hot on the trail of August's outstanding extended
session from 7th City's Daniel Bell, The Outlet Collective have joined
forces with 11th Hour Technology to, not only celebrate the imminent birth
of their new label, 11th Hour Recordings, but also kick off their European
tour (For full details visit www.11-hour.com). Not ones to pass up the
opportunity of a good ol' fashioned shakedown, we have assembled a
heavyweight line-up from their roster to ensure no-one goes home less than
certain that they> '> ve well and truly shaken their ass!
Performing on the night, we are excited to reveal, will be:

Shawn Rudiman - Live
(7th City, Technoir Audio, 11th Hour Recordings)
Having astounded all assembled for his UK debut at Camberwell's Funky Munky
last year, Pittsburgh's Shawn Rudiman returns to lay waste to London with
another 2 hour analogue live performance - Expect nothing but the finest
Detroit influenced beats and soulful electronics to keep yo' feet steppin'!

Arne Weinberg
(Keynote, Downlow, 11th Hour Recordings)
Making his UK debut on the turntables for this special occasion, Arne hails
from Frankfurt and has gained a reputation for beautifully crafted, deep,
dark, comtemplatative house & techno through an impressive series of
releases for Headspace & Star Baby as well as those mentioned above.

Matt Chester
(11th Hour, Flashpoint)
The driving force behind 11th Hour and friend of Outlet, Matt will be
kicking it scuba-styleee, taking us on a trip through the deepest realms
electronic dance music - We know the bwoy can kick it, so this special
excursion should be a more than fitting send off for his new label.

Stewart Lowman (The Outlet Collective) & Ryan Blackman (Flux, Proton Radio,
Samurai FM)
- Together on 4 decks & 2 mixers -
Somewhat laughably' relegated to lastly (but ya KNOW that don't mean
least!), Outlet are all set to unleash this downright dangerous duo for
another onslaught of simply baffling turntable wizardry. For those that
don't know what they're in for, fast and furiously delivered eclectic
techno funk is what's in store and those that do? Well They'll be down
the front!

(313) OT: Xone32 Vs DJM 500

2003-09-12 Thread Gary Robinson
Sorry for the off topic post, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions
on these two mixers. I'm undecided whether to go for Pioneer DJM 500 with
built in FX, or the Allen & Heath Xone:32 which I've heard is more durable
and has a much better sound.
If anyone has used either of these and has any advice before I go and check
them out, it would be appreciated.
Please reply off list.

Cheers

He had the B-52's on the air for an interview and an impromptu, off-tempo

(313) Maestro

2003-01-14 Thread Gary Robinson
Following the recent thread about the influence of disco, I thought I'd
mention this film I've heard about 'Maestro'. It's going to have some
advance screenings in London in February, just wondering if anyone has seen
it yet and can offer a review, as it's already been shown at selected venues
in the US and Europe.
http://maestro-documentary.com/index.htm has a bit of information which
I've included below.
Cheers

Gary

MAESTRO is a feature film documentary, 3.5 years in the making, it captures
the intense experiences of the people who were responsible for underground
dance music that influenced the world.

MAESTRO takes you into the world of Larry Levan, Paradise Garage; David
Mancuso, The Loft, as they formed the center piece within the underground
culture as it evolved into dance music of today.

This culture transcended musical genres and created magical, lasting
moments, not only in clubs but also within the spiritual terrain of our
hearts and psyches. These modern day maestros provided environments where
our spirits, creativity, passion and diversity both thrived and flourished.
They were so significant that without them, dance music today would be
drastically different-worldwide.

Most film documents of this movement have fallen short of its true story and
impact to the world, providing us with a glossed over account of the time.
Opting for a more personal and candid approach, MAESTRO shows the true
history of its individuals. Tracing the underground's dance origin, MAESTRO
brings out a true, candid and tragic understanding of this intense
lifestyle, and the lives they lived and died for. It is far from mere
nostalgia, this film is like the music and experiences it chronicles.

I think this is when UR were in London for their Interstellar Fugitives show
a few years back.
The night before they appeared on Colin Dale's radio show on Kiss FM, I
think there was a short interview and Rolando played a short set (about 20
minutes) I seem to remember doubles of Fix-Flash amongst the tracks you
mentioned. The set used to be on
http://www.abstraktdance.co.uk/newsite/live/live.shtmlbut the link doesn't
seem to work now, but they still have radio interviews with Jeff Mills and
Kevin Saunderson amongst others.

producers. Although I've never heard any tracks of theirs I'm thinking of
going to see them this week, does anyone know what to expect?

Cheers

Re: [313] Please Elaborate Was DJ Magda

2001-09-19 Thread Gary Robinson
I remember seeing Ben Sims about four years ago when he was just another
support DJ in London, Mike Dearborn was suposed to be following him, but Mr
Dearborn just stood there and let Sims play on, it looked like as though he
was scared to get Sims off the decks, when eventually Dearborn did get on,
the dancefloor just emptied.

Re: [313] Sabres of Paradise (was: Some cds I ordered, what next )

2001-04-17 Thread Gary Robinson
Gwendal,

from the Raum Musik site:
Dub Taylor is Alex Krüger from Berlin . Dub Taylor is his alias for very
deep techhouse tracks with tons of Delays. You can find certain releases on
labels like United States of Mars, Force Tracks and Konfekt .
In February 2001 his long awaited debut album "Forms and Figures" was
released on raum.musik .

But you will not only find his productions under the name of Dub Taylor .
Alex also has another project under the name Korsakow where he is producing
some stuff that can rather be called deep house.

But Alex Krüger wouldn't be Alex Krüger if there wasn't still another
project where he 's involved in.

In January 2001 the fist album of the project ''Echobox'' was released on
'freiraum '(which is the listening sublabel of raum.musik). ''Echobox'' are
Nadine Hemme, Thorsten Stahnke and guess who, Alex Krüger of course.

Perfectly produced the three of them are heading towards pop a little bit
with their music . They already have proven their ''life abilities'' with
certain livesets in and around Berlin.
For more info try www.raummusik.de

Hope this helps

Gary

Re: [313] Derrick May + Suburban Knight the End 27 th May?

2000-05-28 Thread Gary Robinson
Ben,
I went down to the End myself and was more than disappointed, having
travelled down to London expecting to hear Derrick May and them having to
put up with Charlie Hall was such an anti-climax, apparently Derrick was
stuck in Amsterdam, whose fault that is I don't know.
I was so pissed off I left at 2 o'clock another rumour going around was that
Carl Cox might have been coming back to London from Homelands and bringing
Kevin Saunderson with him, did he show at all ??
Some of my friends went to Fabric to hear Rolando play only to be refused
entry because they were male (Sexism eh ? thats dangerous) So after that
they came to the End only to be let down again.
If it's any consolation Ben once you here Derrick spin it will have been
worth the wait. Hopefully He'll play out in the UK soon.

Gary

btw has anyone else had this 'treatment' at Fabric, they have had quite a
few Detroit DJ's playing recently and I've heard a few other bad tales from
those nights so is it worth trying to go to see Kenny Larkin there on 10th
June ??

In my previous message to 313 I asked what I should look forward to in
seeing these two at the End on Saturday (here comes the sob story): I'm a
19 year old student and have been listening to this music for a while now,
ever since a 1993 mix tape of derrick may, and as he never seems to play
close to where I live (the Midlands of the UK) I have yet to see him play.
I eventually got the weekend off work after a very hard time, and saved up
the money to go down to London, full of joy at finally seeing him and the
Suburban Knight, but both cancelled!!! Now I'm not sure what the reason was
for this (can anyone tell me what happened?) it may be legit, but I've heard
too many stories of Derrick not turning up. Now I love Derrick and have got
all of his stuff, and him doing this will not change my views on the guy but
it does upset me. We pay his wages and for him to do this so consistently
shows a blatant disregard for his many loyal fans who I'm sure have
travelled far further than me.
Still love u Derrick + hoping there was a real reason for the no show to
prove me wrong.
Ben
