Sorry for the OT, and for writing the subject in portuguese, but since we are
the football country i guess it should be spelled in our language. ;-)

Anyway, just a short message to wish luck to all you Brits tonight.

I am sure it will be a good game. Even if the old beautiful days of brazilian
futebol have long gone, we still trust in our R's talents.

We gonna have our club tonight and of course we hope to finish it in nice
style: playing the national anthem, screaming gol very loud, and partying!!!

 Greetings from the south,

Yeah, but isn't what is really hurting agricultural families is corporate
 farming?

it will also prevent the current middle class from acquiring the wealth
they need to make the leap to being rich.

I have a problem with this - making the leap to being rich means someone
else is making the fall to being poor - that money has to come from
somewhere. What is wrong with being middle class? Why is accumulating more
privately held wealth seen as progress?

sometime soon, the senate is going to vote on whether to make the repeal
of the estate tax permanent. this tax, paid only by the wealthiest of the
wealthy upon inheritance, if repealed permanently would further increase
the gap between the wealthy and the rest of us.

i don't usually ask people on the various lists i participate in to call
their senators, but i feel very strongly about this. if you have a bit of
time to call or email your senators, and you believe the estate tax should
NOT be repealed permanently, please contact your senator:

i just want to remind you to put tresor #200 on your
cd's urgently to buy list and to make its release date
 a red-letter day:

** scion arrange and process basic channel tracks **

(tom 'magic feet' already mentioned it here a couple of
 days ago.)

i have been listening to this for a while now, and i'll try
to write a short review... i'm not sure if i find the right
words to describe the release and my thoughts and
feelings. let me just sum it up in one sentence:
it's highly recommended, buy it and see for yourselves.

basic channel have been releasing music for almost 10
years. innovative, timeless tracks that always stand out.

now there is the first remix and rearrangement of their
tracks, and who could do this better than scion who
have released on chain reaction, and who were very
close to the sound and spirit that basic channel releases
 have.

so scion took a bunch of basic channel tracks on one
side, and ableton's software live on the other side,
and created an hour of music that can be described
as combination of rearrangement, remix, and dj mix.
(ableton = berlin software company run by gerhard
 behles, former member of monolake)

listening to those timeless tracks mixed together would
be great alone, but the rearrangement adds so much
the music feels even richer and much more intense.
snippets, samples, sound effects are added, everything
melts together, and if you didn't know the original tracks
you wouldn't know which sounds originally belonged to a
track, and which did not. everything fits just perfectly
 together.

it's very exciting to follow all the details but at the
moment i prefer to sit back and let myself be carried
 along by the music...

one of the best cd releases this year so far.

 release date:
july 13th (according to hardwax; i guess that's for
 germany/ europe?)
july 22nd (according to the mail forwarded by tom
magic feet; could be the date for the states...)

Afrika Bambaataa the Soulsonic Force's Planet Rock is the landmark electro
track, combining funk, hip hop break beats and
a drum box. In 1983, in clubs like the Roxy in NYC where one could bump into
electro producers like Arthur Baker, the Roland
TR-808 and their Karaoke bass sequencer TB-303 were used by electro DJs to
glue their selections together and to boost the
bass appeal - and those sounds seem to be have been locked in with the
 (historical) Electro sound.

Cybotronic have been claimed as proto-techno, due to the people involved with
it, but their sound reminds of electro (without
the hip hop attitude) and, erm, UK pop dude Gary Numan. The techno we got to
know as techno (since the late 80s) has more in
common with house music than with electro.

Anyway, arguments about 'proper' electro and 'proper' techno aside,
*Mantronix* are the ones to look out for - with them,
electro acquired a sense of production sophistication without losing the
dance floor edge. If you crave for that mid 80s
sound, try out anything by them - production work, remixes, their own
releases - not only are their tracks great, their
vocal recording work is definitely worth checking out.

The Orb have a connection with this 'Men From Wadodem' track: I read a long
time ago that Alex Patterson (is that right? I'm no Orb afficionado) tried
to license it but that there were contractual probs with a publisher or
label or something - implying that this was a relatively early work for von
Oswold, as he's been self-determining publishing/release wise for most of
 the last decade.

Fehlmann and Oswald are connected from *way* back in Palais Schaumberg
days; they've also shared production chores here and there. And, of course,
Fehlmann is a studio fellow Orbian - hence the connection. I think
Paterson has only one t. :-)

[313] final scratch == Very Appealing for these reasons ==

2002-06-05 Thread Giles Dickerson
1. I had spine surgery 1 year ago for an injury I incurred most probably from
carrying my records to my radio show and DJ gigs. It caused me three years of
unbearable pain (anyone who knew me then can attest to this by the shear number
of pills I was taking) and my limp. I ended up in the emergency room in New
York and then on Morphine for a week and into neurosurgery. I would like to
avid another back injury and therefore not carrying my records to gigs is very
appealing.

2. My record bag can only hold 40 - 60 records, and is limiting as I'm sure you
all know. You know that moment where you still have apile of records you HAVE
to bring with you to this gig but there's just no room! With a big selection of
my records on a laptop I can have a few hundred tracks with me.

3. With my music in a laptop or hard drive in my carry-on bag I never have to
worry about flying / losing / breaking my records in airports / baggage claims.
Ever know anyone that's had a crate of their favorite records ripped off? Don't
answer that.

All this adds up to me wanting a MAC version. I'll keep buying vinyl, I love
listening to it at home and almost all the music I own in on wax, but come on,
get that heavy record bag off my shoulder and I'm a happy camper.

I think that the reason it's only written for BeOS, not Mac or Windows, is
because of the audio latency. The last I heard they had it down to like 5
ms or something. If anyone has ever seen BeOS in action it's pretty
impressive. There's no way a Mac or a Windows machine could handle audio
 latency that low.

And 5 ms still isn't all that great for DJ uses, at least in my opinion.

what I remember is the music broke down and this vocal, kinda like a speach
came in, and rich made the last words spoken in to a sort of synth line.

if this is the track I can not tell from this sample but it did not sound
like this in my mind, it seemed like it sould have been faster, maybe it
kicks in later. I remember the track being like 15 mins long played around
 11 am.

 and on a different note.
anyone read the blurb in the metro times about the control party?

it said the that rich played a 17 hour set and then collapsed?
it also said rich had a heart attack in NY?

I just thought the control party lasted 14 hours so how could rich play for
17? when I know he stopped playing around noon, so when did he go on sat?

played while Advent was on the main stage, I walked over to check out Advent

Maurizio tracks, some stuff off of strictly rythm, and ur. How come i've

 Chef Rob eloquently stated:
she was sucking his cock dude.

 Or we could say:

Norma Jean Bell blew her horn; the interpretive dancer performed a similar
act on something that does not require a reed to be played.

RE: [313] DEMF/Metro Times Article

2002-05-22 Thread Giles Dickerson
I work all the time with events and promotions groups. I hate that I'm saying
this but all those projects are dripping with sliminess and control hungry
egos's. They tend to be focussed on getting it done with a lack of artistic and
creative integrity and I find them almost impossible to work with.

Just last week I had to have someone in New York pulled off a team becasue she
was so difficult in the process of producing a promotion for a Detroit auto
maker I work with.

I read that article and feel like I know Carol personally, I've been working
with people like her for years and it's the biggest shortcoming of the
advertising industry. The problem with Carol I'm guessing is she's been brought
up in a world of ego';s where getting someone fired is how you handle a dispute
rather than coming to an agreement. People who work like this ultimately have
no team to work with and are so self destructive they end up destroying what
they seeked to create. I've seen it time after time in Boston and New York.

A festival of this integrity needs to be run by someone with integrity.

this is a well-written and insightful article. one problem i do have
though is that marvin is depicted as a power hungry, shrill b*tch. i
wonder how she would've been covered had she been male? even though a
woman wrote the article, i still wonder about this.

i bought a cheap southwest ticket a few days ago so i'll be in the city
this weekend (cell phone 314-369-5513)...but while i plan to check out as
many after sets as i can, i don't know how much of the event itself i'm
going to see. there is still a chance to resurrect this festival, but the
question is whether people really want to struggle for this. there's an
implication in the article that in the beginning of the demf everything
was groovy...and then some individual (marvin) f*cked it up inexorably.

i believe that marvin never should have fired craig. i also believe that
marvin's contract should not be renewed...and that a consortium of old
heads should run the show, if the show continues at all. but people have
to be willing to fight, and have to be willing to acknowledge the
possibility that they can still win, and through struggle make this into
something special...not special in a 2001 sense, because we can't go back
 to the future.

RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design

2002-05-20 Thread Giles Dickerson
I'm glad you have a strong opinion about them, it's better to have an emotion
over a work than not to feel anything at all. I'ma big fan, but aesthetics are
so subjective, they probably suck to a lot of people. They really have effected
design over the past ten years greatly and I admire their direction.

RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design

2002-05-20 Thread Giles Dickerson
This is bordering off subject, but because artwork has such a huge impact on
the purchasing and marketing of music, I'll keep going - DR did a fantastic job
of visualizing a lot of music that never had such a metaphorically perfect
representation. Take all the Autechre designs they did on Warp, the album
really feels visually like the album sounds (or in my humble opinion it does).

Take Nude Photo (if you've got the original), and all the other Alan Oldham
illustrated releases, that feels like I expect the album to sound, and like it
or not, that's a huge feat for a designer. Believe me I know! It's hard doing
artwork that the artist and label feels effectively expresses the music on the
release.

ps. Anyone have the emotional distortion album by Chris Grey? What do you think
of that design?

would people have suggestions for a mac user? i've got an ibook and
would love to mess around (read: i have no clue what i'm doing).

  on a similar note:
i've been considering for pretty much the past 4 years in college to
get some turntables and begin to actually get some skills so that i
could feasibly do the upmost basic DJing. i've also considered
starting off all electronic, and thinking of beats that way. i really
never had free time in college to do any of this but i might as well
make some time now or else, well the impetus might not be there 10
years down the line. if people have opinions with regard to starting
off making/experimenting with music, i'd love to hear. i've no clue
what sounds i want, that's part of why i want to do it (but its gotta
  make people dance).

if anyone here is in the providence ri / boston area, and do this sort
of stuff, i'd love to meet up and gain the tiniest bit of direction
(i'll be there from june on)

Oh man, I used to have this old toy Casio keyboard that went through a
flood. After it had dried out, it sounded positively alien . . . all
of the instruments were suddenly endowed with bizarre resonances, and
it would randomly apply pitch slides all over the place. I wish I had
had the foresight to sample it before my parents gave it to charity.

I'd still be interested in other theories as to why a culture
of skilled, performing DJs is strong in the US and not so
strong in Europe - I know mine is pretty flawed, but in
the absence of alternatives (other than euro-faggots suck :)
I'm generally confused as to why it is the way it is.
Although I guess another theory could be explained in only
  two words - hip hop...

 and 'battles', yeah.

I've been following this thread with a lot of interest and actually trying to
put some thoughts toward an explanation. Bear with me

Contributing factors from a roots perspective are (as far as Detroit jocks
go) when you grow up listing to the Wizard 'quick mix' style on the radio,
you benchmark that as quality skills, something as a kid you think in your
head now that is what a stellar DJ does. Or booty jocks, etc. it's part of
what you hear on the radio or in your environment, and influences you, as
obviously a lot of that (even Mills) influenced and by pop dance of the 80s
of which hip-hop and Mojo's eclecticism is a big part. A whole generation of
people in Detroit who heard 'hot-mix' and/or quick mix style shows and the
Wizard on the radio learn that skills = more than selections and more into
the realm of what creatively/aggressively can you do with 2+ records...
including early experimentations by Derrick May and even Richie with what
could you do with a Reel-to-reel machine during a radio show or DJ gig, etc.
Also what the HotMix 5 were doing in Chicago was all about cramming as many
hot 'street tracks' into a show, and that also means stuff like doubles,
drop-ins, phasing, cut-n-scratch, EQs, 33/45 tricks, effects, etc. And Yes I
am talking about with (proto) techno and house music, italo, etc.

I'm with the camp who would rather see someone try and fail at something more
'reaching' and funky and experimenting with really CREATING more than the sum
of an intro and an outtro of 2 records that flow seamlessly together. Yes
there is a time for that, but to me it's a lot easier and 'safer' than really
trying to ask yourself as a DJ how can I go beyond just these 2 records, as
 the artists intended them?

Esp. when you have records that are maybe hard as nails and 'straight'
techno.. you have to inject some funk into them with the way you play them in
a mix, because on their own, (just cleanly mixing one into the other) tends
to be pretty funk-less, or at best just a tad boring or uninspired... That
is why to me I love hearing Claude Young, because what he plays tends to be
harder than I'd buy/play, but the crazy funky stuff he does in the mix really
ads that funk that's IMHO missing from some of the individual tracks
themselves. Rob Hood and Jay Denham are less tricky than Claude, but without
a doubt their DJ styles also adds trenemdous soul and funk beyond what the
records themselves were 'born with'. IMHO, far too many DJs select a set by
what is easy to mix, not by how great the tracks really are *on their own
 merit*.

I guess to me the idea of just smoothly blending 2 great tracks is an average
way to play, (the cost of entry to DJing, if you will) but what really set up
you up as a creator / crowd mover became what you could do beyond that...
either with experimental selections (cross-genres/years/styles!!) or more
aggressiveness or experimentatin through other various techniques.

So - in summary? - there's new generations of DJs who never were really
exposed to that as an archetypal kind of radio aggressive Hot Mix DJ, and I
think they have newer/different influences and DJ 'role models' than the
previous genera tion who grew up wishing you were The Wizard, who was for
most people (who heard him) the guy you wished you could DJ like. :)So
not saying one style is right or wrong, but that might explain some of the
US/Detroit style of really getting aggressive and 'tricky' in a mix, without
it coming off as mere novelty, but elevating the art of what a DJ *DOES* as
an artform, more than what a simple machine or software can do now. DOes
anyone know what I'm trying to say?

While we may equate machines with funkiness, you also can't program
ProTools to 'inject funk' in a mix. Well, not yet. ;)

 peace,
 Matt MacQueen

RE: [313] Baby Ford / Zip == mixing styles

2002-05-17 Thread Giles Dickerson
Let me just throw something out. There's no one way to do anything. If you
thionk you can mix house with choppy edits and do it well, then go ahead an
experiment. The whole idea of moving forward means breaking the rules. BUT, and
this is a big one, you usually need to know the rules to break them.

 here`s my two cents.
after hearing so many local dj`s who play techno like proggy house or
even worse mixing it only in the end, i must say techno is a kind of
music which should be mixed as hell. people like mills, hood, young and
suchr masters at this. trying to mess with some gigolo 80`s stuff will
end in very sad sounds, but i mean techno is made for this kick ass
riggid mix, thats how u should play it and thats how i try to play it.
but other genere likes house and stuff should IMHO mixed long slow mixes
with not so much fader work but more knobs turning.
i heared peter ford play he mixes fine his music is not so bumby ass
like the riggid techno, and he`s selection is huge. i do not like people
do scartch over techno sometimes its too much.
about the pro-tools mix, give any day a bumby hard edge (even with
mistakes) play with the faders and knobs like its hot potato i allways
like it.but REAL live mix throw the damm computer to hell, some things
were ment for humans to be made. in the machine its too good- i hate
 this

 have a nice shavuot

Jamie Foxx. Not sure of the source. You could ask Terrence directly the
actual source of the sample ... I think it's a sample of a comedy performance
where Jamie portrays a Luther Vandross/Keith Sweat/R.Kelly style RB crooner.
If you listen closely there is audience reaction in the sample, and places
where it's obvious the original sample was in a different key than TP's track.

[313] FOOD in Detroit - must go here !!

2002-05-15 Thread Giles Dickerson
There's a place in the downtown area,
run by a woman and her husband and daughters,
she runs a spice/sauce company called Spice Mama's
and the restaurant is called Jada.

It's the best southern cooking I've ever had ever.
And live Jazz/Funk/Soul to boot.

We had the best time there.

Here's the review (It's way fu*king better than these as*holes say !!)

http://detroit.citysearch.com/profile/5238217

The Scene
Once a sure destination for soul-food and jazz lovers, sadly, Ja*Da is now only
available for catering. To order Ja*Da's catered service, call (313) 965-1700.
The Food
Ribs, shrimp and catfish that are out of this world. Also, don't miss the
macaroni and cheese, slaw, sweet potatoes, or black-eyed peas. For dessert:
sweet potato pie or bread pudding with Amaretto-soaked cherries and walnuts,
both served warm. Of course, don't dare pass up the ribs, with Ja*Da sauce
that's barely sweet and a glorious off-red. Baked over flavored chips, they get
two spice rubs before the grilling stage.

He's another Detroit producer who happens to have

 Discography:
 KDJ 13, KDJ 20, KDJ 24, KDJ 26/LV1, KDJ 29, MG 015

They're all about 50%-66% excellent tracks. My pick would
be KDJ 13, with Trues and And This Club Song.

hahah:0 what you got to understand is that MTv over here is slightly
different to the US. we've got a lot of different MTV channels and I think a
bit more variety of music. jaguar got some pretty heavy rotation over here
when it was first released, as is GV's la la land at the moment - as well
as that awesome Roni Size/Cypress Hill track. A few months ago even Funk
D'void's bass Invaders was getting played.

And anyways, just a few days ago wasn't Mr Sean Deason saying he was getting
 some of those MTV dollars;)

stage sponsorship by internationally known Ministry of Sound. Joining the
performance line up over the three-day Memorial Weekend May 25th, 26th and
27th at Hart Plaza will be Subterraneous and Dilated Peoples.
Detroit Hip-Hop is breaking through not only here, but nationally as
well, said Mike Huckaby, member of the DEMF Artistic Board of Directors.
Both of these groups bring a different style of Hip-Hop to the table and
  they truly represent the underground.
Subterraneous is known as one of the most influential underground
 Hip-Hop
crews coming out of Michigan. The group consists of OneManyArmy,
 Decompoze,
Magestic Legend,Malaki, Illite and Phrikshun. The group has garnered a
positive reputation for displaying their individual styles and then coming
together during a performance to demonstrate a unique and powerful
 presence.
The group recently released their latest album Waterworld Too. They
 are
scheduled to perform prior to George Clinton's 8-p.m. performance on the
DEMF stage at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002. For more info on the group
 go
  to www.subterraneousrecords.com.
Nationally acclaimed Dilated Peoples, formed in the mid-90s, has been
blowing the scene up with raging underground singles such as Third
 Degree
and Work the Angles before they embarked on a wildly successful road
 trip
with a film documentary about hip-hop DJs. The group has been featured in
REMIX magazine and is noted for their recently released album Expansion
  Team.
Dilated Peoples is well known for providing original and inspiring
performances for fans. They are scheduled to perform following a 6 p.m.
 live
jam session by Advent on the DEMF stage at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 27,
2002. For more info on the group go to www.dilatedpeoples.com.
Meanwhile, the wildly popular and internationally known Ministry of
 Sound
has claimed an envious and prominent position as a stage co-sponsor on
 this
year's new DJ Tower. They share a co-sponsorship with Miller Genuine Draft
where top-notch performers such as DJ Zapp, Adam X and the DEMF's own
 member
of the Artistic Board of Directors K. Hand will musically spin techno fans
to higher heights of dance and sound.
We are extremely happy to have the Ministry of Sound join this year's
festival, said PCM president and festival founder Carol Marvin. They
represent the absolute best in electronic music entertainment. This
multi-media giant is marketing the festival in 23 U.S. markets alone to
demonstrate once again their ability to provide fun for fans on a scale
unmatched by anyone else in the business. Their presence on the new DJ
 Tower
at this year's festival promises dance like never before.
The annual Detroit Electronic Music Festival is known as the world's
largest free dance party that attracted 1.7 million visitors to last
 year's
event and attracted a reported $147 million in economic impact to metro
  Detroit.

PS. Ministry of Sound will do a great job marketing the festival. It's a good
thing, as long as their logo isn't part of the branding.

In honor of May Day, Brett Dancer will be workin' it
at Permaculture. The proud proprietor of Trackmode Recordings, over the
last decade Brett has released excellent underground house tracks by
Moodymann, Larry Heard, Theo Parrish and himself from the basement of his
Queens apartment. Like many of his Detroit pals, Brett plays big club gigs
all over the world but rarely gets the chance to spin here at home. Why?
Because no one asks him. DDX were rocked by the heavy grooves at his Winter

own backyard. And damn if it ain't free.

  Anyone feeling friendly today?

I'd love a copy of that Jill Scott mix that Theo did.
I know it's hassle but if anyone could pick me up a copy from Record Time
or Rick Wilhites store I'd be very very grateful.
  I could pay via paypal.

I could do a swap for a rare UK item or anything!
I don't have $100 either to buy one from e-bay.

Cheeky, I know, but it had to be worth asking.

RE: [313] FWD: Letter from Daniel Bell

2002-04-11 Thread Giles Dickerson
Maybe it's fine time to start understanding the there are artists whose bread
and butter is composed music and there are artists whose bread and butter is
remixes, and there are artists who do both.

To me any track that uses a loop for the basis of the track is a remix not an
original. Someone who does a very good job of remixing and composing would
be someone like Rick Wade, or Theo Parrish, someone who does a good job of
composing would be Brett Dancer, or Drexciya, someone who does a great job of
Remixing would be Sneak, or say the Variations series.

Just had a listen to Wink's track and it is a pretty straight rip-off of
  Phreak.

 Agreed.

Its kind of a shame that Dan spent so much of his letter going into the
history between himself and Josh Wink and drawing strained parallels between
other tracks because, is this new case, he's definitely got a strong point
which could have stood on its own.

I do see what you mean, but on the other hand I think when you add up all
Winks behaviors thru the years towards DBX it sounds more like he was
actually like 'stalking' his tracks, (I realize that's a bit overdramatic but
bear with me here)... they way he was calling or almost 'warning' Dan let me
him know he was releasing that were very similar... you gotta admit the
cumulative effect of that is pretty darn weird. Those who are artists on
this list, what if someone kept doing that to you? After awhile it would
just go from mildly flattering to annoying to downright creepy.

That whole Lil Louis/Wink french kiss/hows your evening so far story -- I
mean that's an extremely derivative track, it's basically a remix. (OK well
not as derivative as what the Dance Mania artists were doing to each other
back in their heyday, anyone?) but to think he didn't want to give credit
where it was due with even THAT track...

For comparision: When Carl Craig (as Paperclip People) did a track that
lifted the signature line from of E2-E4, and he not only credited Gottsching
as original artist but actually TITLED the track Remake.

(And in an semi-related note I had just about forever shunned that track
'higher state of consciousness' from my memory until Phred just mentioned it!
  Arrr ;)

 Peace,
 Matt MacQueen

Agreed, but its a pre-requisite for this sort of remixing that the
 original artist,
 a) won't mind, or
 b) won't find out!

I don't think Josh Wink could reasonably expect either of those to be the
 case...

John Tejada has two albums coming out in the next couple of months. I'm
told the one on Plug Research is going to be more on the IDM tip, the stuff
I heard sounded a little like Plaid. Expect this one around May.

He also has another LP on Robin Porter's Immigrant label, this will be more
on the techno tip. I heard this is suppose to be out in June.
 http://www.immigrantindustries.com/

John Tejada has a collaboration with Polar (Certificate 18) coming out on
Pieter K's Metaformal label. I think this should be out soon. The A Side is
suppose to be kind of electro-ish, the b-side is drum n bass.
I think there are soundclips at http://www.metaformal.com

And John Tejada Titonton Duvante also made some more tunes. I think this
time they are more on the drum n bass tip.

Speaking of Titonton, I heard he has a single on Archive Records coming out.
   Can't wait!!

Otto was referring to last year's Trackmode party at the Detroit Contemporary,
which was one of the most sublime dance music experiences I've ever had.

 SOUND SIGNATURE/TRACKMODE RECORDS PARTY
Detroit Contemporary Art Gallery 5141 Rosa Parks Blvd, downtown Detroit
*Larry Heard (Alleviated Records/Chicago - house)
*Kenny Dixon Jr. (KDJ Records/Detroit - house)
  *Kai Alce
*Rick Wilhite (Three Chairs/Deroit - house)
  *Brett Dancer (Trackmode/NYC - Detroit)
*Theo Parrish (Sound Signature/Detroit - house)

I remember Otto in the center of the dance floor, dripping in sweat, grinning
from ear to ear for at least 4 hours. Moodyman clowning blowing smoke
rings in silhouette. The best Detroit style house music all night long.

This party is legendary at this point, straight up. And the 2002 party
looks to be just as good.

RE: [313] vladislav delay?

2002-03-22 Thread Giles Dickerson
Naima is a Live re-working of the album material from Anima, previously
released on Mille Plateaux. The vocal edits are beautiful and were recordedings
of his girl friend. The performance was at the Ars Electronica, and is on that
label in cooperation with Mille Plateaux.

If you like his material, he goes under many names, I would reccomend very very
highly the album ENTAIN, very similar content wise to Jan Jelinek/Farben,
extremely deep and tetural.

He also has ana hmazing house CD called Sistol on Pthalo, out of Greece, CD
only sadly but unbelievable early approaches at minimal textural house fusion.
Wicked all the way down.

He also ofcourse releases records as Lluomo, and those are just plain
fantastic. Just rem, ember he;s not always releasing as Vladislav DElay, so do
some research on discog sites or ask your knowledgeable music store person!

looking for, it is the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list. ;)

To be even more specific, what I am looking for is a list that is pretty
broad in range, something that encompasses the whole of electronic
 music. I
am looking for a list that will discuss Vladislav Delay, Electric Tones
Records, Edgard Varese and Derrick May during the course of a single
 day.
Basically, a big mailing list that covers the whole of electronic music
 and
   is more content than chatter.

I want a list with more discussions about why Ionisation was better or
 worse

than Deserts, what is happening with obscure amsterdam IDM labels, and
 what
were the 12s to pick up this week. Ideally, it will be low traffic high
   content.

   Hello,

Does anybody have any recommendations for music mailing lists that are
interesting and informative? I am looking for something that covers
 313,
ambient and IDM without a lot of OT opinion posts, and other gratuitous
traffic that seems to plague this list. Something web based would be
 nice
   as

well, something like I Love Music, but with more electronic content.

As much as I love this list and the people that I have met through it,
 it
   is

taking up to much of time time for too little information.

   Take care,
   mt

[313] Derrick Carter last night

We had the pleasure of seeing Derrick play close up in a small irish pub in
Cambridge last night. 3 hour set, the place was at capacity by 10:30. What can
I say, that guy is so in control of the music he plays it's unbelieveable. What
a talent. What a talent. What a talent.

It's so rare to see someone who captures the essence of the DJ performance so
comprehensively.

Once again House music saves the day.

Further, I'd say they're inexcusable really. However, I wondered how those
offensive remarks of Ms Gavoor, invalidated the other stuff Laura Gavoor
said. Still have yet to get a cogent non-insulting, non inflammatory
response that actually answers that question.

Hi ken! i'm so very glad for your response, and i can't wait to provide you
with a non-insulting positive response of my own!

It depends on ms gavoor's full opinion of discrimination. if she feels
strongly about people getting discriminated against, then it DOES invalidate
her response. In that context, having her say ,'discrimination sucks,' and
then turning around and saying the word 'faggot,' is 100% contradictory. it
causes the reader to believe that she does not believe in her own views.

Or if she feels that only black people are discriminated against, or that
black people are the only ones worthy of a sympathetic shoulder when it
comes to discrimination, then i'll shut up.

but i still find the word faggot offensive.

Hope to hear from you soon ken, and have a great day!

Melodies Memories on Gratiot (a few miles south of RT).
Neptune in Royal Oak is good for indie and some IDM.
The Record Collector in Ferndale is great for retro vinyl as is Car City
records on Harper near 8 mile way over on the east side.
WAY down in Wyandotte used to be a very odd, but cool store called
Sprockets; they had every Ozric Tentacles CD in existence as well as tons
of off the wall 70s stuff - almost nothing you'd think of as rent paying
  stock in the store.
Stormy Records (ran by Windy Carl) in Dearborn is fun - lots of indie
 stuff.
East Alley Records in Rochester has a good rep, but I've never been there.
It really is hard to beat RT for 313 related items.

while i have been following the thread with great zest and interest, i'd
like to share something with everyone that my good friend ana sent me. i
made this last night and it was fantastic. so good i'd like to share with

heavenly and i think everyone should bake a loaf while composing their next
email. just to have some comfort food nearby.

While this easy version of garlic bread is fine just
as it is, it is also very flexible. Consider mixing
chopped fresh basil or sun-dried tomatoes into butter
 mixture before using.

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room
 temperature
 2 tablespoons olive oil
 2 cloves garlic, minced
 1/4 teaspoon salt
1 loaf (1 pound) hearty Italian bread

 1. Heat oven to 3500. Mix butter, olive oil, garlic
 and salt in small bowl.
 2. Slice bread into 18 pieces, about 3/4-inch thick,
without cutting through bottom crust, so slices stay
attached. Spread butter mixture, dividing evenly
between slices, about 1 teaspoon. Wrap bread tightly
 in foil.
 3. Bake in 3500 oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until
butter is melted and bread is hot. Unwrap carefully
 and serve hot.

 okay. game on!

i agree. most of laura's words were spot on.why let a tiny,
inconsequential phrase nullify all the excellent points she made -
shouldn't you make some allowances for cultural differences between
Laura's local communication styles and yours.

 stupid nigger.

sorry, we use that phrase in my local town and its just a communication
style difference. its just an inconsequential phrase.

Fact of the matter is, laura was talking about oppression, and keeping
people down, and then goes off and uses a phrase that oppresses and keeps
people down. *that* invalidates her response, not to mention that her email
went off on a totally different tangent than the arguement at hand. did she
make good points? yes she did. is juan atkins being oppressed? are you
 smoking CRACK?

People on this list need to make up their mind: either you want your techno
stars to be famous, or you don't. Someone will bitch about the superstars
and sellouts that Sasha and crew have become, and then complain that Juan
and Carl aren't in the same position. You'll bitch about Oakenfold taking a
sponsorship of sony headphones, and then completely ignore that the
belleville 3 got ford focus's at a press conference last year, and juan was
quoted as saying, if i wasn't a big guy, i'd love this car.

Plain and simple, they ARE big stars, and to pretend that they're being
oppressed is stupid as fuck. I don't see Carl boppin around detroit in a
beat-up volvo not being able to afford to put out another cd; last time i
checked the dude gets his nike's custom made for himself. I don't see
kevin saunderson living a run down house on the westside; the dude owns
multiple houses, all of them gorgeous. Derrick doesn't wear rags when he
goes out, the bro has a rolex and $100 dollar silk shirt. some of you want
to pretend that these guys are doin this 100% for the music, and that
they're barely scraping by while sasha and digweed laugh in their big evil
Tower raking in the money that our poor detroit artists should be making.
the fact is, they ARE making great money, living great lives, and enjoying
 themselves. They better be.

There's no doubt she is passionate about
what she is sayin and perhaps this emotion slipped through in her writing -
I'm sure no harm was intended.

[313] Marketinbg techno + house to the masses

2002-03-01 Thread Giles Dickerson
I think a huge part of why the attempts to marklet house and techno on a large
scale have failed is because there is no one singing (sure occasionally there
is) but there's no one there dancing singing to make a video of, talking to the
audience. Popular music has melodies that are easily remembered and have lyrics
than be sung along to. I'm guessing thet's the huge appeal the house and techno
are often missing.

Hence the explosion of Everything but the girl. The grand reception of Bjorks
dance vocals.
Hip hop is as close as we've come the beats are as heavy and great but there
someone there singing and talking and on an average human level, people can
connect with that easily.

First of all, this is one of the most thought-provoking threads I've read
in a while (nit-picking over curse words aside)- I'm glad the opinions are
being voiced and I'd like to hear more from those like Laura who have a
lot of direct industry experience with these issues.

firing off cannons. Recently while watching CNN, there was a news segment
covering Elton John FLAMING the music industry for lowest common denominator
marketing. He said that the good musicians and music were actively being
passed over in favor of the rubbish msuic the industry was putting out...He

Last night I saw a great PBS special that focused on this same problem of
LCD marketing- but in the realm of Film-Making- its called The Monster
that ate Hollywood. There are tons of interviews with industry analysts,
journalists, producers and directors up on their site at:
 http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/hollywood/

I think these issues of Pop Culture, Global Economy, LCD Marketing, etc.
are common across the various realms of Arts Entertainment similar
things are happening in each field right now from an economic standpoint.

In terms of dance music getting serious attention-
I think the problem with house and techno is that there is not a good
stereotype of techno producer to market to teenage kids. I think the Major
Labels like to market stereotypes of Rebellious, Subversive, Cool, and
more recently pop-conscious-satiric characters that middle-class suburban
teens can relate to. The problem with house and techno is that when you
look for stereotypes- you have the gay club scene, the middle to lower
class minorities- but without the hip-hop egos and fashion, then also the
computer and synth geeks, none of which are sexy or cool to todays
teenagers. But when the London Rave scene appeared- here was something
more marketable- white kids sneaking out at night, taking drugs, and
partying to rave music, not to mention new marketable fashion trends to go
along with it. And of course, once they found something marketable, they
further bastardized the music into formulated candy-coated crap, just as
they did with disco 25 years ago.

PS- I'm not even going to bring up the race issue- a whole other can of
worms- but I agree that the race card is not over-used- it is still a
serious problem with deep roots in the social and political policies that
govern our country. People need to be aware of this especially as it
becomes more subtle and disguised by other issues.

Yes and No. The Chemical brothers and Fatboy Slim tend to choose a single or a
couple very catchy vocal edits and repeat them over and over. We know they're
samples but I think the general audience probably thinks it might be the artist
or a singer.

i used to think that too but people like norman cook (fat boy slim) and
the chemical brothers are hugely popular over here (UK) and over there
too and a lot of their records don't have vocals as such on them.

does this mean that people have 'got over' the need for a vocal to latch
the minds on? i don't really have an answer.

i also suspect that the marketing problem we are talking about here is a
lot more acute in the states. vocal-less (and, as it happens, soul-less)
records regularly make the top ten over here now. perhaps this suggests
the problem also lies with radio stations too. bbc radio one (the most
listened to station by young people over here) plays a huge range of music
and doesn't stick to one particular type as a lot of stations over there
 do.

RE: [313] Marketinbg techno + house to the masses

2002-03-01 Thread Giles Dickerson
I realized something fairly profound halfwat through this year and applied the
thinking to my own viewpoint of loop sampling. I don't mean getting a sound,
when I say sampling I mean taking a chunk and looping and editing.

I decided that I would think of music (whether house hip hop or whatever) that
samples loops as a Remix. I applied this thinking to KDJ all the way through
Jeru and I'm happy with thet. That way the artist doesn't get credit for the
invention but is seen as re-applying. I kind of like this viewpoint because it
answers a lot of the tricky issues around sampled music.

So...to apply that for example, I see most of Sneaks tracks as Disco remixes,
and in an ideal world, he'd title his songs as the original + remix. I'ma
huge Sneak fan, but he's a better remixer than a composer. Whereas Larry
Heard especialy lately, composes. Someone like Kenny Dixon does both.

Just a rant but an interestiung approach I thought anyways.

My God, Entroducing is an entirely notable work. His understanding of how drums
work is obvious in his programming. That's an amazign album, if you listen to
interviews you'll also see, he did that cut and paste style, very very old
school technique, using fairly lo-fi rgear.

I think historically there's been a hierarchy of musical popularity, and it
all has to do with how human the music is as far as mass appeal. I would
put things like experimental, industrial and techno at one end of the
spectrum, and pop music at the other. On the one end you've got something
that is, by design, more mechanical and detached... marked by what the vast
majority of the population would consider noise, while pop music oozes
this saccharine dribble, so sycophantic to the masses that it becomes a
self-fulfilling prophecy. House is somewhere in-between.

Having said that, I must confess that I'm a huge house fan. I like a lot of
different types of music though, and there are things that I like about
every type of music that I listen to that draw me to that type of music
(Tracey Thorn's voice is enough to make me melt, sight-unseen for instance).

I mean, we all know what it takes to write a song that will be popular with
the public at large... it takes true genius to create something that will be
popular with your own crowd (or, most importantly, yourself).

And as far as electronic music artists ripping off other people,
everything has been done before. Some people think DJ Shadow's
Endtroducing is just pure plagiarism, while those who are a little more
 open-minded may consider it art.

 Right you are Giles,

The issue of Muzik magazine that came out (in the States) about a month ago
has a one or two-page interview with Shadow, and lists it as the #1 dance
album of all-time... though I agree with the reader comments that were a
little surprised to see it at #1 as it's a bit tough to dance to. I do
think it's an amazing contribution to the genre, but I'm more partial to
Leftfield's Leftism as far as pure dancability.

[313] Mixing Styles

Anytime one finds themselves boxed in by over analyzing technique criteria is
probably inhibiting their creative growth. Go with the flow, stick to achieving
a feel that you're looking for. Break the rules. Have fun. Most importantly do
something new, and find wonderful music to play in new and creative ways.
