In 1983, in clubs like the Roxy in NYC where one could bump into electro producers like Arthur Baker, the Roland TR-808 and their Karaoke bass sequencer TB-303 were used by electro DJs to glue their selections together and to boost the bass appeal - and those sounds seem to be have been locked in with the (historical) Electro sound. Cybotronic have been claimed as proto-techno, due to the people involved with it, but their sound reminds of electro (without the hip hop attitude) and, erm, UK pop dude Gary Numan. The techno we got to know as techno (since the late 80s) has more in common with house music than with electro. Anyway, arguments about 'proper' electro and 'proper' techno aside, *Mantronix* are the ones to look out for - with them, electro acquired a sense of production sophistication without losing the dance floor edge. If you crave for that mid 80s sound, try out anything by them - production work, remixes, their own releases - not only are their tracks great, their vocal recording work is definitely worth checking out. [313] final scratch == Very Appealing for these reasons ==
1. I had spine surgery 1 year ago for an injury I incurred most probably from carrying my records to my radio show and DJ gigs. It caused me three years of unbearable pain (anyone who knew me then can attest to this by the shear number of pills I was taking) and my limp. I ended up in the emergency room in New York and then on Morphine for a week and into neurosurgery. I would like to avid another back injury and therefore not carrying my records to gigs is very appealing. 2. My record bag can only hold 40 - 60 records, and is limiting as I'm sure you all know. You know that moment where you still have apile of records you HAVE to bring with you to this gig but there's just no room! With a big selection of my records on a laptop I can have a few hundred tracks with me. 3. With my music in a laptop or hard drive in my carry-on bag I never have to worry about flying / losing / breaking my records in airports / baggage claims. Ever know anyone that's had a crate of their favorite records ripped off? Don't answer that. All this adds up to me wanting a MAC version. There's no way a Mac or a Windows machine could handle audio latency that low. And 5 ms still isn't all that great for DJ uses, at least in my opinion. He dropped a couple Maurizio tracks, some stuff off of strictly rythm, and ur. How come i've never heard of this guy!! RE: [313] DEMF/Metro Times Article
I work all the time with events and promotions groups. I hate that I'm saying this but all those projects are dripping with sliminess and control hungry egos's. They tend to be focussed on getting it done with a lack of artistic and creative integrity and I find them almost impossible to work with. Just last week I had to have someone in New York pulled off a team becasue she was so difficult in the process of producing a promotion for a Detroit auto maker I work with. I read that article and feel like I know Carol personally, I've been working with people like her for years and it's the biggest shortcoming of the advertising industry. The problem with Carol I'm guessing is she's been brought up in a world of ego';s where getting someone fired is how you handle a dispute rather than coming to an agreement. People who work like this ultimately have no team to work with and are so self destructive they end up destroying what they seeked to create. I've seen it time after time in Boston and New York. A festival of this integrity needs to be run by someone with integrity. - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: Lester Kenyatta Spence Sent: Wednesday, May 22, 2002 10:21 AM To: Rob Theakston Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] DEMF/Metro Times Article this is a well-written and insightful article. one problem i do have though is that marvin is depicted as a power hungry, shrill b*tch. i wonder how she would've been covered had she been male? even though a woman wrote the article, i still wonder about this. i bought a cheap southwest ticket a few days ago so i'll be in the city this weekend (cell phone 314-369-5513)...but while i plan to check out as many after sets as i can, i don't know how much of the event itself i'm going to see. there is still a chance to resurrect this festival, but the question is whether people really want to struggle for this. there's an implication in the article that in the beginning of the demf everything was groovy...and then some individual (marvin) f*cked it up inexorably. i believe that marvin never should have fired craig. i also believe that marvin's contract should not be renewed...and that a consortium of old heads should run the show, if the show continues at all. but people have to be willing to fight, and have to be willing to acknowledge the possibility that they can still win, and through struggle make this into something special...not special in a 2001 sense, because we can't go back to the future. peace lks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design
This is bordering off subject, but because artwork has such a huge impact on the purchasing and marketing of music, I'll keep going - DR did a fantastic job of visualizing a lot of music that never had such a metaphorically perfect representation. Take all the Autechre designs they did on Warp, the album really feels visually like the album sounds (or in my humble opinion it does). Take Nude Photo (if you've got the original), and all the other Alan Oldham illustrated releases, that feels like I expect the album to sound, and like it or not, that's a huge feat for a designer. Believe me I know! It's hard doing artwork that the artist and label feels effectively expresses the music on the release. ps. Anyone have the emotional distortion album by Chris Grey? What do you think of that design? - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: Giles Dickerson Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 12:35 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design They doa lot of stuff you don't see too. their posters are off the hook. - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 12:34 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject:RE: [313] Speedy J - o.t. sleeve design yeah but the rip-offs are never as badass as the actual DR stuff. Although I guess another theory could be explained in only two words - hip hop... and 'battles', yeah. I've been following this thread with a lot of interest and actually trying to put some thoughts toward an explanation. Bear with me Contributing factors from a roots perspective are (as far as Detroit jocks go) when you grow up listing to the Wizard 'quick mix' style on the radio, you benchmark that as quality skills, something as a kid you think in your head now that is what a stellar DJ does. Or booty jocks, etc. it's part of what you hear on the radio or in your environment, and influences you, as obviously a lot of that (even Mills) influenced and by pop dance of the 80s of which hip-hop and Mojo's eclecticism is a big part. A whole generation of people in Detroit who heard 'hot-mix' and/or quick mix style shows and the Wizard on the radio learn that skills = more than selections and more into the realm of what creatively/aggressively can you do with 2+ records... including early experimentations by Derrick May and even Richie with what could you do with a Reel-to-reel machine during a radio show or DJ gig, etc. Also what the HotMix 5 were doing in Chicago was all about cramming as many hot 'street tracks' into a show, and that also means stuff like doubles, drop-ins, phasing, cut-n-scratch, EQs, 33/45 tricks, effects, etc. And Yes I am talking about with (proto) techno and house music, italo, etc. I'm with the camp who would rather see someone try and fail at something more 'reaching' and funky and experimenting with really CREATING more than the sum of an intro and an outtro of 2 records that flow seamlessly together. Yes there is a time for that, but to me it's a lot easier and 'safer' than really trying to ask yourself as a DJ how can I go beyond just these 2 records, as the artists intended them? Esp. when you have records that are maybe hard as nails and 'straight' techno.. you have to inject some funk into them with the way you play them in a mix, because on their own, (just cleanly mixing one into the other) tends to be pretty funk-less, or at best just a tad boring or uninspired... That is why to me I love hearing Claude Young, because what he plays tends to be harder than I'd buy/play, but the crazy funky stuff he does in the mix really ads that funk that's IMHO missing from some of the individual tracks themselves. Rob Hood and Jay Denham are less tricky than Claude, but without a doubt their DJ styles also adds trenemdous soul and funk beyond what the records themselves were 'born with'. IMHO, far too many DJs select a set by what is easy to mix, not by how great the tracks really are *on their own merit*. I guess to me the idea of just smoothly blending 2 great tracks is an average way to play, (the cost of entry to DJing, if you will) but what really set up you up as a creator / crowd mover became what you could do beyond that... either with experimental selections (cross-genres/years/styles!!) or more aggressiveness or experimentatin through other various techniques. So - in summary? - there's new generations of DJs who never were really exposed to that as an archetypal kind of radio aggressive Hot Mix DJ, and I think they have newer/different influences and DJ 'role models' than the previous genera tion who grew up wishing you were The Wizard, who was for most people (who heard him) the guy you wished you could DJ like. :)So not saying one style is right or wrong, but that might explain some of the US/Detroit style of really getting aggressive and 'tricky' in a mix, without it coming off as mere novelty, but elevating the art of what a DJ *DOES* as an artform, more than what a simple machine or software can do now. DOes anyone know what I'm trying to say? While we may equate machines with funkiness, you also can't program ProTools to 'inject funk' in a mix. Well, not yet. ;) peace, Matt MacQueen - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe

Joining the performance line up over the three-day Memorial Weekend May 25th, 26th and 27th at Hart Plaza will be Subterraneous and Dilated Peoples. Detroit Hip-Hop is breaking through not only here, but nationally as well, said Mike Huckaby, member of the DEMF Artistic Board of Directors. Both of these groups bring a different style of Hip-Hop to the table and they truly represent the underground. Subterraneous is known as one of the most influential underground Hip-Hop crews coming out of Michigan. The group consists of OneManyArmy, Decompoze, Magestic Legend,Malaki, Illite and Phrikshun. The group has garnered a positive reputation for displaying their individual styles and then coming together during a performance to demonstrate a unique and powerful presence. The group recently released their latest album Waterworld Too. They are scheduled to perform prior to George Clinton's 8-p.m. performance on the DEMF stage at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2002. For more info on the group go to www.subterraneousrecords.com. RE: [313] FWD: Letter from Daniel Bell
Maybe it's fine time to start understanding the there are artists whose bread and butter is composed music and there are artists whose bread and butter is remixes, and there are artists who do both. To me any track that uses a loop for the basis of the track is a remix not an original. Someone who does a very good job of remixing and composing would be someone like Rick Wade, or Theo Parrish, someone who does a good job of composing would be Brett Dancer, or Drexciya, someone who does a great job of Remixing would be Sneak, or say the Variations series. - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: Matthew MacQueen Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2002 11:06 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Cc: Sean Creen Subject: RE: [313] FWD: Letter from Daniel Bell Just had a listen to Wink's track and it is a pretty straight rip-off of Phreak. Agreed. Its kind of a shame that Dan spent so much of his letter going into the history between himself and Josh Wink and drawing strained parallels between other tracks because, is this new case, he's definitely got a strong point which could have stood on its own. I do see what you mean, but on the other hand I think when you add up all Winks behaviors thru the years towards DBX it sounds more like he was actually like 'stalking' his tracks, (I realize that's a bit overdramatic but bear with me here)... they way he was calling or almost 'warning' Dan let me him know he was releasing that were very similar... you gotta admit the cumulative effect of that is pretty darn weird. Those who are artists on this list, what if someone kept doing that to you? After awhile it would just go from mildly flattering to annoying to downright creepy. That whole Lil Louis/Wink french kiss/hows your evening so far story -- I mean that's an extremely derivative track, it's basically a remix. (OK well not as derivative as what the Dance Mania artists were doing to each other back in their heyday, anyone?) but to think he didn't want to give credit where it was due with even THAT track... For comparision: When Carl Craig (as Paperclip People) did a track that lifted the signature line from of E2-E4, and he not only credited Gottsching as original artist but actually TITLED the track Remake. (And in an semi-related note I had just about forever shunned that track 'higher state of consciousness' from my memory until Phred just mentioned it! Naima is a Live re-working of the album material from Anima, previously released on Mille Plateaux. The vocal edits are beautiful and were recordedings of his girl friend. The performance was at the Ars Electronica, and is on that label in cooperation with Mille Plateaux. If you like his material, he goes under many names, I would reccomend very very highly the album ENTAIN, very similar content wise to Jan Jelinek/Farben, extremely deep and tetural. He also has ana hmazing house CD called Sistol on Pthalo, out of Greece, CD only sadly but unbelievable early approaches at minimal textural house fusion. Wicked all the way down. [313] Marketinbg techno + house to the masses
I think a huge part of why the attempts to marklet house and techno on a large scale have failed is because there is no one singing (sure occasionally there is) but there's no one there dancing singing to make a video of, talking to the audience. Popular music has melodies that are easily remembered and have lyrics than be sung along to. I'm guessing thet's the huge appeal the house and techno are often missing. Hence the explosion of Everything but the girl. The grand reception of Bjorks dance vocals. Hip hop is as close as we've come the beats are as heavy and great but there someone there singing and talking and on an average human level, people can connect with that easily. - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: Peter Leidy Sent: Friday, March 1, 2002 1:32 PM To: laura gavoor Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] The Great White Hype...was IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! First of all, this is one of the most thought-provoking threads I've read in a while (nit-picking over curse words aside)- I'm glad the opinions are being voiced and I'd like to hear more from those like Laura who have a lot of direct industry experience with these issues. firing off cannons. Recently while watching CNN, there was a news segment covering Elton John FLAMING the music industry for lowest common denominator marketing. He said that the good musicians and music were actively being passed over in favor of the rubbish msuic the industry was putting out...He Last night I saw a great PBS special that focused on this same problem of LCD marketing- but in the realm of Film-Making- its called The Monster that ate Hollywood. There are tons of interviews with industry analysts, journalists, producers and directors up on their site at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/hollywood/ I think these issues of Pop Culture, Global Economy, LCD Marketing, etc. are common across the various realms of Arts Entertainment similar things are happening in each field right now from an economic standpoint. In terms of dance music getting serious attention- I think the problem with house and techno is that there is not a good stereotype of techno producer to market to teenage kids. I think the Major Labels like to market stereotypes of Rebellious, Subversive, Cool, and more recently pop-conscious-satiric characters that middle-class suburban teens can relate to. The problem with house and techno is that when you look for stereotypes- you have the gay club scene, the middle to lower class minorities- but without the hip-hop egos and fashion, then also the computer and synth geeks, none of which are sexy or cool to todays teenagers. But when the London Rave scene appeared- here was something more marketable- white kids sneaking out at night, taking drugs, and partying to rave music, not to mention new marketable fashion trends to go along with it. And of course, once they found something marketable, they further bastardized the music into formulated candy-coated crap, just as they did with disco 25 years ago. PS- I'm not even going to bring up the race issue- a whole other can of worms- but I agree that the race card is not over-used- it is still a serious problem with deep roots in the social and political policies that govern our country. People need to be aware of this especially as it becomes more subtle and disguised by other issues. -p - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] Marketinbg techno + house to the masses
I realized something fairly profound halfwat through this year and applied the thinking to my own viewpoint of loop sampling. I don't mean getting a sound, when I say sampling I mean taking a chunk and looping and editing. I decided that I would think of music (whether house hip hop or whatever) that samples loops as a Remix. I applied this thinking to KDJ all the way through Jeru and I'm happy with thet. That way the artist doesn't get credit for the invention but is seen as re-applying. I kind of like this viewpoint because it answers a lot of the tricky issues around sampled music. So...to apply that for example, I see most of Sneaks tracks as Disco remixes, and in an ideal world, he'd title his songs as the original + remix. I'ma huge Sneak fan, but he's a better remixer than a composer. Whereas Larry Heard especialy lately, composes. Someone like Kenny Dixon does both. Just a rant but an interestiung approach I thought anyways. - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: robin pinning Reply To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 1, 2002 1:52 PM To: Giles Dickerson Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] Marketinbg techno + house to the masses Yes and No. The Chemical brothers and Fatboy Slim tend to choose a single or a couple very catchy vocal edits and repeat them over and over.
