RE: (313) when I grow up....../ Ableton controllers
The Peavey PC1600 has been the standard for midi control of anything for a while. It has high resolution faders (you can actually gang them so one starts where the previous one ends) and is fully programmable via PC front end(which includes SYSEX commands for live control of synths etc). The things built like a tank and no studio should be without one. The Evolution controllers are pretty nice (I have a UC-16 that I use constantly) and they actually make the green commercially available ableton one (I believe it's the same thing as the UC-33e). I don't find it limiting as far as control channels at all since it has a very easy patch memory which requires a single press to switch scenes. I'd love to have a go, but I'm pretty sure I'd make a mess. I really want to get a controller for Ableton. I've been thinking about selling a chunk of records to fund it. I've had a look on the market though, and the selection seems pretty poor. Even the custom built one hasn't got that many controllers on it. (the one with the ableton 'skin') I reckon to get super busy with it you need more. Anyone else find this? Or,has anyone found one they're really happy with? Nice find, I would suspect that the quality would be at least par to the evolution controls (which have cheapo feeling pots and dials) but functionally for live, these look like the ones to use (especially the banks of buttons for sample triggers). RE: (313) production and mastering
The protools that comes with the digi001 (not the free one) supports XP (and better yet, digi released WDM drivers so you can use any windows prog with the hardware) and PT 6 will also run on XP. I am not a big fan of protools since the midi support still seems a little awkward (compared to logic or cubase anyway) but I cannot really talk smack about their hardware which is the best by a long shot. However, I think in a couple years the idea of using protools as a Techno production platform will not even come into play since PCs are outpacing Macs both in price and performance and the improvements in affordable sound interfaces will soon make the $50k, $300/hour studio obsolete for dance music producers. Once Windows is taken out of the picture and companies get a little initiative (how about a custom Linux distro for Cubase ala final scratch?) we will see the true advent of the home studio. -raph -Original Message- From: Sakari Karipuro [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 8:30 AM To: 313 Subject: Re: (313) production and mastering spw wrote on Thu, 6 Feb 2003 about following: No offence, but it sounds like you have never used Pro Tools. RE: (313) mixer advice
I agree about the Vestex being a excellent quality mixer HOWEVER its more geared toward performance and is not that well suited for the home. For one thing, no booth or record outputs and no pre-mix feature either. If you can live without those, thts the way to go. Otherwise, Pioneer DJM-300,500,600 or the 9000 (the pimpest of the pimp IMHO). The new Rane (forget the model, the new blue one) looks tight and alot more DJ friendly. Rane has excellent quality and sound but some of their mixers are laid out in a not so conventional manner and not very DJ friendly (not to mention they are expensive). happy hunting. There is a method of using the dots to match your 2 decks. RE: (313) technics (re: best decks)
Re: Modifying pitch sliders: The 1200 mk2 can be modified to remove the click AND defeat the quartz lock (which is a relative position on the potentiometer aka pitch slider) but soldering and taking the fader apart is required. I know very few ppl that actually use the lock (on either the mk2 or 3) and it also solves the problem of having 2 zeros. You can use the Mk3 faders on the mk2 and you will not have 0 button (faders are around $30 US). I have modded about a dozen technics TTs (lights, phat cables, reverse etc) and they all vary somewhat in how everything is put together (through hole connections on older tables, connectors on newer ones) so I recommend a service guide for anyone diving in. I have some reservations on the vestax TTs however since they seem to have a lot of snap in components (rca, tone arm, quick change fader etc) that require some physical connections. These connections will oxidize and degrade over time (if ever cleaned a TT that has been at a club for a while and you know what I am talking about)and replacing the connectors inside will definitely be expensive. Straight tone arms are harsh on your records also. I think it time for Panasonic to throw some money at they RD ppl and come up with a next generation turntable (mk3d came out like in 1984?). -Raph btw. I have no problem using Technics other than that annoying 0 pitch lock on the older models. My Vestax are not the ones with the +-50% but still the extra 2% on the slider helps a lot. I find the motor on the Vestax to be much stronger than on any Technics I've used and my only complaints are that the tone-arm seems to be lighter and not quite as stable and that when you hit stop it slows down instead of screeching to a halt like the Technics do. These problems may have been corrected on the newer Vestax. Eric At 10:31 AM 11/20/2002 +, seth redmond wrote: OK, this is a little off-topic but... Actually, that doesnt increase the torque (which is a function of the motor), it increases your break. -Original Message- From: rh [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 20, 2002 8:16 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) re: best decks You can increase the torque on Techniques, thats what I have done. RE: [313] Question: Final Scratch
My understanding of digital media formats vs. vinyl is that the digital version will always be superior in audio content fidelity since records cannot effectively duplicate all audio frequencies (especially stereo effects). Digital formats can duplicate frequencies beyond what we can hear and what can be reproduced with existing vinyl presses. This does not imply that digital formats sound better however and records do tend to have an analog warmth that digital formats can lack (which is a strong case for records). The obvious advantages are that there is a very low noise floor with digital formats and they don't degenerate over time. Now for WAV/AIFF vs. MP3 the main concern is the quality of the encoding. The WAV format (per Redbook spec) is considered perfect and is completely lossless. MP3 compression cuts the dynamic range at ~18-19 kHz per channel (at maximum quality settings) and with correct encoding software an MP3 can have the same perceptible quality as the original even though it will act as a low pass filter at 18 kHz(99% of the population cannot hear frequencies this high anyway). I have several good websites that do pretty extensive studies as to what is perfect MP3 compression and will be happy to provide those on request. I've always heard that one of the appeals of vinyl (for audiophiles in particular) is the frequency response range; especially in the low end. It's what purists have complained is missing in CDs for years. Does any one have a technical perspective on the audio quality of MP3 vs vinyl? I understand that MP3 is a compressed format and am curious if that compression would noticeably affect the sound, especially in a large club-like setting. For my needs, MP3 is fine as I listen to it on computer speakers, or rip it and listen to it in my car stereo...I'm not really concerned about superior audio quality in those settings as I don't have the greatest gear to reproduce it faithfully. But, in these mega-clubs and parties where the gear can be of the highest caliber, do you reckon 160 kbps (as Kevin mentioned) will cut it? I'm not trying to start a debate, I'm simply curious for input from those who might have a deeper understanding. Thanks!
