(313) Elmore Leonard on Detroit
I'll share this on 313 too... My discussion here yesterday with Rob following the death of Elmore Leonard piqued my interest and after delving a little deeper (not a great deal!), I discovered that not only did he write several books which were set and steeped in Detroit, he was clearly interested in the history and the 'soul' of the city too. I found a bit of writing by him [at the link below] very interesting.<http://www.elmoreleonard.com/index.php?/weblog/detroit_the_renaissance_city> <http://www.elmoreleonard.com/index.php?/weblog/detroit_the_renaissance_city> It contains an introduction by Leonard to a photographic book by Balthazar Korab. Feeling a little lonely, she decided to go for a long walk towards the more remote ends of the base camp. Re: (313) have we run out of music?
(yes, do excuse us please, we haven't run out of music ; ) ) Thanks for that guys, sounds amazing. Re the long reverb thing, the water reservoir in Cologne had a 45 second reverb as well and the producer of Vor Der Flut writes that the 'intensity is due to the extremely hard, water-impermeable coating on the walls and pillars, which stops the sound from being absorbed, reflecting it with almost no loss intensity.' Looks like the Deep Listening collaboration experienced something quite similar. I've heard spherical are better for turntablism? So is it really true the elliptical stay in the groove better - if so why the difference in recommendation for styles - are the ellipticals fragile? You are also about to being the opportunity to feature on it! Below, enclosed are the instructions. Follow carefully and then call the number to leave Matthew his message. DEADLINE: 29.11.05 All the Best and Good Luck !K7 Records Matthew Herbert and his Answering Machine: Matthew Herbert; renowned Jazz Musician, electro-acoustic legend, big band conductor, 90’s house warrior, soundtrack scorer extraordinaire, author of the highly influential ‘Personal Contract for the Composition of Music’, speaker for the anti-globalisation movement and the man responsible for the highly popular ‘Bodily Functions’ and ‘Plat du Jour’ albums is at it again….. Matthew has a new album in the pipeline. Similar to his previous offerings Matthew does not intend to steer away from his dominating, God-like use of the sampler, and the rule to which his music is created; ‘the use of sounds that already exist is not allowed’. A rule, which has lead to his music being created through the sounds of food preparation and household appliances, for example, instead of the monotonous, processed, synthetic beats of standard drum machines. Thus manifesting itself into an entirely original amalgamation of music and sounds. His latest release, the critically acclaimed, ‘Plat du Jour’ was created over a period of 18 months, and consisted of 30,000 chickens, 3,255 people biting on an apple, and a cheiftan mk 10 battle tank – to list just a few of the ingredients making up this epic release. So what has Matthew in store for us now….? To be honest I don’t think anyone will know until his new record is released, but for one of the up and coming tracks on this yet, untitled album, he requires your assistance. Yes. You! At the !K7 office we have installed a separate phone line, the ‘Herbert Hotline’, if you will. Unfortunately there’s no-one at the other end to pick it up, just an answering machine. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to call this number and leave a message consisting of a single sound. It could be organic, vocal, mechanical, natural – even bodily. Remember you’re dealing with a man who has created music from the recording of coffee cups and sewer systems, so the more original the better. These sounds will be collected on the answering machine and past on to the grand, musical conductor himself, who will fuse the sounds together to create a grand musical cacophony that only he knows will sound like. To add extra intrigue to this task you must under no circumstances state, or give any indication as to what the sound is. Should you believe that your contribution is worthy enough of credit and acknowledgement then you should email us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and your musical contribution will be duly noted. So go on, give the ‘Herbert Hotline’ a ring….. +49 (0) 32 22 1918 394

There's so many DJs who have either slipped into the fog of our memories or have passed on - I must commend those dedicated to immortalizing these artists so that the next generation(s) can have some understanding of and appreciate the talent of these men and women. There is a political component here that has been overlooked. Duane didn't just "die before his time." Very few of the DJs do. In Duane's case, I believe he was closeted, which produces a great deal of stress above and beyond the stereotypical health risks. I wrote a eulogy for a friend of mine...a true house head. Here: http://www.visioncircle.org/archive/003485.html In some ways it is probably very similar to the stuff some of us wrote about Laura Gavoor a few years back. But the heads, the djs, the producers, those associated with the scene...I think very very few of them just happen to die before their time. They don't have health insurance, and the health insurance they do have is usually just enough to get by. So when they are beset by troubles, WHEN THEY DECIDE TO TELL DOCTORS, these troubles become significant complications. same goes for those who take on the even bigger task of writing books about DJs passed. there's a whole subaltern culture out there that deserves to be captured, a subculture that can't simply be written off as "youth culture." i don't post as much as i used to... i store all the emails so when i need something new to play while i write i can quickly find something. but this email combined with me missing the demf has me thinking about how much i missed, and how much work we have to do. Most DRM systems can be defeated pretty easily, and when all else fails, anyone with a good soundcard can make a high quality digital copy via analog loopback of protected digital files. So DRM is a joke. It only stops people the way a cheap bike lock does -- it deters the casual thief. Similarly, the legal pursuit of file sharers is doomed to failure. They can go after easy, stationary targets, but they'll never get the technical edge over the file sharers. We're only in the very early stages of what's possible with decentralized peer to peer software. The only way forward I can see for artists is this: 1. Give away lossy digital copies of your music, as promotion. 2. Emphasize the audio quality of the 'real thing' -- the paid for copy. 3. Make sure the physical object you're selling adds value over the digital copy -- either by adding tracks, attractive packaging, or some sort of unique value you don't get downloading it digitally. 4. Perform live, or DJ or do something where you're selling a unique event that can't be endlessly reproduced and distributed over the internet. There is a fifth option too. How much money did May make off of letting one of his tracks (Strings maybe) be used for Midnight Run? Maybe a buck a copy? This isn't easy. None of it is. Interesting. KDJ did a "Prince Party" at OSLO (Detroit) last weekend. He put up a translucent screen in front of the booth to obscure his identity. The set was excellent. Peace, Scott Then Moodymann took his turn sporting a freaky halloween mask, his afro all blowed out huge, and it was a Rick James (R.I.P.) love fest.. he started with 'You and I' and played it start to finish, then later 'Cold Blooded' (god i love that percussion on a big system) and lots of cool disco, also Moscow Discow, rolling stones 'Miss You' (!), the 3-Chairs 'Theme' (also featured on their new 3xLP which is great, BTW)... prince - controversy (w/ everyone singing the "people call me rude, i wish we all were nude" part, hah), anyway if you like dirty disco and detroit house and occasional italo and dusty dance oddities, these guys deliver. Though I usually have no idea what these guys are playing, KDJ seemed to stick to some of the more recognizable cuts but this was fine with the crowd to be sure. peace -- Matt MacQueen http://SonicSunset.com
RE: (313) Techno Geography
Interesting comments. I too think about this kind of stuff alot. A few thoughts: I ended up in Detroit (city) 10 years ago this summer--coming from rural Indiana--when I got a job in Detroit rather than Chicago, my first choice. At the time I knew next-to-nothing about Detroit techno, except what a good friend had told me about a party he had attended where D Wynn, D May and R Hawtin changed his life forever--later I figured out that it was in the Packard Plant. Back in Indiana my buddy turned me on to the sounds of the Chicago and Detroit underground. I had to check-out that scene once I arrived in Detroit. I went to a party at the Packard Plant and I have been a fan and amateur DJ of Detroit-inspired techno and house ever since. I have often mused about what makes Detroit such a special place, being the soil in which soul, funk, techno and house have taken firm root and flourished. While Detroit has well-known negatives, these limitations (like someone said earlier) can be extremely rich sources of inspiration. I think this is why Detroit is such fertile ground for strong and self-directed people. However, many places have these same limitations, and sources of inspiration, but these cities did not oversee several musical revolutions, and perennially produce the remarkable musical talents of Detroit. Why Detroit? My personal opinion about this is that Detroiters (at least since the 20s) have been free-thinking, forward-looking, embracing of democracy and technology, but skeptical of Amerika. (The Diego Rivera mural in the Detroit Institute of Arts sums it up best for me). Detroiters have fought (for real) for their place in the middle-class. I believe that this struggle, and the passion for a better life and a more just world, comes through in the music and gives it the unique Detroit quality--at once dark and bluesy and optimistic and forward-thinking. Looking back over these last 10 years of my life (funny that it coincides with this list's anniversary), the people of Detroit have changed me in very positive, personal ways. But, it is the music that has always hooked me in, kept me refreshed and happy to stay put. I'm very proud of Detroit and its accomplishments, musically and otherwise. I want to thank the members of this list for reminding me of the greatness of this city, day in and day out. It matters, and it does not matter. First, I must quote The Pet Shop Boys... "...there's a lot of opportunities, if there are'nt you can make them..." I've been very tempted to move to Detroit. However, after questioning my motivations, I see that by doing so, I am only chasing myths and ghosts of what I think a "Detroit" experience "should" be. I can say that the few times I have visited, I have been completely blown away: the sincere people, Detroit's love of ALL music, Detroit's freakishness...and of course all of the incredible artists that populate that city, in their varied mediums, not just techno music. I'm talking photgrapy, advertising, graphic design, political thought, journalism. Detroit Rock City! Godamn it! I really think you are born into it and must have it in your blood and veins. I am happy with the idea that it CANNOT be transplated by a simple change of geography. (Apply to your dream city/ situation of choice) Great teachers want their disciples to spread the word, set up their own churches, communes, record labels, clubs, 'zines...etc. Detoit is the teacher. I guess it depends on what you are doing. I have found that more easy going evirons fuel my creativity, as a producer. I can riff and ramble on this a lot more. My head hurts right now. Peace, Louis

RE: (313) DEEEEE-TROIT Basketball
Was like New Year's or Beirut near my house, with guns and firecrackers going off all around. Awesome night for Detroit tho. Those guys were playing so well I almost wish it weren't over. There's a parade from Chene Park to Hart Plaza tomorrow at noon. Should be a blast as long as it doesn't rain. Maybe they'll have a techno float--Love Parade style!
