I used the behringer at plasa briefly and it sounded a bit dodgy [Im

sure if that was because of the audio source of headphones connected to the

I'd be interetsed to hear opinions on the behringers actually as a friend is
looking at the 200 for his 1st mixer and it looks like really good value
[115GPB and it has full VCA, xfader curve, curve adjust on verts, -32db
kills, hamster etc etc]

2003-09-11 Thread Langsman, Marc

Im totally down with this - I download a fair amount, but if its stuff I
like I'll go buy it [99.9% of the time on vinyl] otherwise it justs gets
deleted from my hd. I also like to keep hold of mp3s of stuff I buy on vinyl
so I can listen on my mp3 player without always having to encode myself or
do a mix with those tunes in. I think the amount I spend on music has
increased on avg due to the huge exposure I get to new material I wouldnt
normally get to hear etc.

The other thign I really like is the ability to download mp3s of live sets
that you cant buy in the shops. I wouldn't say Im not supporting the artists
though - I have for example some Jeff Mills live mp3 mixes sitting on my
player and although on the surface Jeff doesn't benefit from this
financially I always make the effort to go see him play out and like most
folk on this list I own a large proportion of the axis/purpose maker
catalogue :)

(313) Plasa Technology Exposé !

2003-09-09 Thread Langsman, Marc

As promised I'm back from 2 days at the Plasa light and sound show @ earls
court, london with a roundup of the new kit I got to play with and some pics
for you to dribble over !

First the pics... :)

http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/users/mbl/plasa/

Quite an interesting year this time round - loads of new products and the
reps seemed quite happy to talk me thru everything and let me get hands on
with the kit :)

CD Decks with scratchy platters seem to be flavour of the moment - in my
pics you can see the new denons with motorized platter [and some attatchment
so you can stick a 7" to the top of it for that 'realistic vinyl feel'].
These were pretty sweet actually - you can play 2 tracks off the same cd at
the same time so you only need 1 of them to play out. My biggest issue with
these is they look a complete nigthmare to use if vaguely inebriated [the
guy on the stand took about half an hour explain the features and I was
already lost - e.g four looping sample banks which you can nest within each
other !?]. One thing that stood out about this badboy was the ability to
flash it with upgrades from the denon website [apparently it initially wasnt
developed with mp3 functionality but this is a flashable upgrade].

On the 2nd Day I went which was a trade day rather than public day I got a
chance to play on the new technics cd decks..all I can say is *wow* ! Check
the pics - these babies have the same motors at 1210s and similar
construction platter. They feel really solid and sound great. Loads of nice
stuff on them like the ability to sample the deck's output [eg I did some
scratches, then sampled the scratches and played them back out] other
niceties included braking speed pots, a platter free-wheel mode, scratch-aid
effects [like a one-way mode for stabs] and reverse-play throw switch. The
rep says these are gonna weigh in 700GBP when theyre released - this seems
to be the ballpark figure for most of these next gen cd decks about to hit
the market.

After some sweet talking I managed to grab a go on the final scratch demo
rig to fiddle with the new traktor interface. This is really sweet and seems
a lot slicker than the old i/face. They seem to be really focusing on
practilicalities for the working DJ with features like a playlist generator
tool which shows you relative bpms of tracks and total mix time [useful for
planning those recordings or for radio jocks]. They seem to have a new type
of fs 12" too which is lighter weight vinyl for scratch manipulation and is
broken down into separate timecoded sections for easy navigation and I think
so u can make your own breaks etc. The rep claimed you also now jack an
Archos or Ipod into an f/s laptop , mount the drive and use the tracks
straight off the device which sounds pretty handy. A company stanton now
work with have developed a laptop stand to acompany f/s which keeps your
laptop above the decks at an angle off the table [sales pitch: "prevents you
spilling beer on the laptop!"] :)

Numark had some fun stuff on their stand this yr including a device which
looks like a record deck with a widget that scans the platter on it. The
deck actually takes cd's via a tray in the front and manipulates tunes off
the cd using the platter. To me this seems like a hardware version of
finalscratch and I don't massively see the point. The rep pointed out the
cost aspect as a major point - two of these @ 700GBP a piece is a lot
cheaper than 2 1210s + laptop + finalscratch. Saying that I think fs gives
the DJ way more flexibility and you can carry it in your bag - but it ll be
interesting to see how these numarks fare when they hit the shops.

Pioneer were showcasing two new battle mixers on their stand this year.
There are two models - both provide some intersting features such as
adjustable x-fader resistabnce [flick across for scratching or tactile
resistance for smooth fading] and adjustable fader lag [not sure what this
does tbh!]. The more expensive of the two models has a touchpad for kaos
type effects and menu driven configurastion of the mixer. The unit has 50
odd effects which can be assigned to the faders and scratched/messed about
with. There is also a foot pedal control for effects and session connectors
for battle teams etc. Unfortunately pioneer refused to let me play wioth
this so I cant tell you much else about it suffice to say its now on my
shopping list !! :)

I had a quick visit before I left to the Korg stand and managed to sneak a
look at some new things they've come up with. The main product beeing pushed
was a new 'entracer' video kaos pad. This does allt he stuff the audio pad
used to do but also takes in a video feed and as u can expect lets u wiggle
around with video fx using your finger. This was hours of fun to play with
but it weighs in at the 800GBP mark and the demo model really didn't seeem
to have great res or frame rate but saying that its easy enough even for a
7yr old to get to grips with. Korg also had a valve based sample/music
workstatio

need to get my hands on that Stacey Pullen badboy at somepoint.

remixed by contemporary artists] but this one looks immense - remixes
include Metro Area [woop!], Felix Da HouseCat, Spinna, Mr Scruff and others
:)

Aye! unfortunately I had to remove my "UR - Unexploitable" top and suffice
with just my Jefferson Ave tee due to the crazy temperatures - luckily there
was an outside bit so sit and cool off in the breeze tho :)

It would be nice to see some more things like this - it made a nice change

absence of radio1/trance bs :]

RE: (313) test

2003-08-28 Thread Langsman, Marc

Well I missed LFO and Guy called G due to temperature overload / too
mullered to know what was on where but I have to say I was really impressed
overall and it certainly kicked the [EMAIL PROTECTED] out of homelands. What I
caught of
Mills's set was very enjoyable - also sneak+carter back2back was great
[although the sound in that room wasn't the best] - groove armada seemed to
play quite alot of old skool house which went down well. I wandered in near
the start of Laurent Garniers set and wasn't too impressed, but when I came
back in later he picked things up a lot and it was really kicking :) [given
he was playing for 5hrs or something daft that was kinda fair enough]. I
also seem to remember that kraft kuts guy slicing up prodigy out of space
and lee perry chase the devil which was worth the money alone !!

... I think my only real complaint was the fact that bottles of water were
being confiscated on the door and the bar certainly wasn't cheap and also
used some crazy buy-in-advance 'bar token' system which was pretty annoying.
Other than that for 30quid you cant really argue !

If anyones interested there are some pics I took of the eve at
http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/users/mbl/pics [you'll have to escuse the
randomness i.e. us in motorway service station the next morning pics etc !]

Depending on how anal you are to the sound quality a battery, a couple
transistors biased and impedence matched to to your player, a placcy case
and conenctors would do the trick - shouldnt be too hard to find a schematic

I've spent a long day in front of this computer without any music so if you
could - point me in the direction of your top 5 (online). Any style - just
want to hear some good mixing and/or selection.

RE: (313) Boogymann on Superhuit.

2003-08-11 Thread Langsman, Marc

Just been checking that kdj discog..

For all moodymanns preachin' - this kinda sh!t really annoys me :

  kdj 003 - 12" (repress)
a1, the day we lost the soul
a2, tribute (to the soul we lost)
b1, the day we lost the soul
b2, tribute (to the soul we lost)

kdj 006 - 12" (repress)
a1, i can't kick this feelin' when it hits

kdj 019 - 12"
a1, forevernevermore

..etc etc...

Whats the deal with the stream of one siders (or 2 siders with the same
stuff on both sides!!) ? Bit of a sham - especially as we have to pay the
import $$ in the UK ... Even a side of moodymann's random waffling would
have been betetr than nothing :/

Marc

attempting to be a article on future dj technologies so much as a large

*bizarre* website to say the least !!

Sounds pretty intersting :

"imagine "scratching" the cutoff frequency and Q of a filter while
simultaneously scratching a sound sample played through that same filter."

I notice this as well...

"Unlike other systems which employ "timecode" on vinyl, MsPinky's vinyl
records (available in black or pink) contain specially modulated physical
location stamps"

..wtf is the difference !!?!? H

Any reviews about this would be appreciated !

Don't know if anyone of you have heard or used this place but they seem to
have an amazingly healthy catalogue of cd and vinyl with realaudio samples -
mostly downtempo/funk/jazz/breaks and housey/deep house stuff but seems they
have good back cat's for various ultra quality labels like Classic, F-comm,
Grand Central, Chilli-funk, K7. Ive placed a substantially large order after
wetting myself over their great catalogue - will post as to how quick
shipment is etc !

Also one of the things I ordered is "Tutto Matto - Hot Spot" -- not sure if
anyones listened to this but is it what's described as 'italo disco' ?
Anyway sounded really nice so slapped it in the 'ol cart :)

Peace...out
Marc

RE: (313) "Jaguar" Strings on 80s House record?

2003-08-05 Thread Langsman, Marc

Does the fact that there is so much random hooha / disagreement about
whether jaguar did/did not sample that 80s tune infer that even if it did,
it's kind of within the reasonable use / so unrecognisable that its not
really 'ripping off' ?

IF everyone was in complete agreement that jaguar is an obvious blatant rip
of this tune then that would be an issue in my book - but given the general
musical expertise on this forum the amount of contention going on speaks for
itself.

 :D

Marc

RE: (313) local booty tune!

Hehe just having a listen now - pretty amusing :D

The vocals sound kinda 'raw' ish [Im don't have a huge idea about production
so not really sure how to describe this - I guess kindof unprocessed/not
cleaned up or something !?]

Other than that its quality - good to here some folk starting to bang out
some new booty - seems to have been a bit of drought of releases recently in
that department :/ Nice to hear its maintained the miami-style comedy
element in the rap too :)

RE: (313) Vestax or Technics

Thanks for the comparison...I agree about the pitch, I like the resistencace
on the 1210s but vestax are definitely moving things forward quite
substantially especially with the straight arm etc.

As as slight tangent I was considering in investing in some Shure M44
scratch carts to stick on my 1210s as Im fed up with the skipping - does
anyone use these / know if they will do the trick ?
