MEK jurren baars [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: 313@hyperreal.org mail.comcc: Subject: Re: (313) 12 year old is sued by the RIAA 09/10/03 04:31 PM the RIAA is now offering an amnesty program to filesharers, read here: http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNewsstoryID=3399602 some people are fighting back: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=18658afl=frnd the same thing is happening here in the netherlands; 'stichting brein' an organisation that could be compared to the RIAA, has been demanding the names of people who's IP adresses they've got. But the internetproviders refuse to give those names, referring to those persons privacy rights. christiaan alberdingk thijm [kazaa's lawyer] points out on the website of his lawfirm why 'stichting brein' has not much chance of winning their fight for those names. i'm not sure what to think of all this. first of all, the extreme long time it took the recording industry to do something it could have done long ago, thereby only making things worse. and secondly giving the public the wrong impression; the impression that eventhough filesharing is not ok, it will have no consequence on you. the way they sue 12 year olds doesn't really help them either, it's like a shopkeeper who sees hundreds of people stealing from his shop day in day out, and finally does something about it, by picking out the weekest person that has ever done so, in the case a 12 year old. third, i'm really puzzled by all these settlements. $2000 for a thousand songs she allegedly shared through her computer? that's $2 per song!!! in court the RIAA would have to convince the judge and the jury that this girls filesharing has caused the recording industry $2000 damage. they could NEVER pull that off! they would even face a hard time trying to prove that there is a direct link beteen the decrease in sales in the music industry, and filesharing. just look at the shift in sales towards dvd's or even ringtones, and combine that with the bad economy. jurren _ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. I agree and while I too am on the side of the artist it seems to me the people who have most to lose and hence kick up the biggest fuss are the *big* artists and the middle men. I think these types of people are overpaid anyway. While I think it's fair enough these people should be paid for tours, hard work etc. I do think CDs are far too expensive and too many rich people make too much money from them. These days I seem to buy most of my records online and file sharing helps me a lot. I've lost count of the records I've heard mentioned or heard in a mix that I've later found on slsk and then ordered online. For me it beats going into a record store and saying have you got the one that goes 'dumm dumm dumm' :) Plus if like me there aren't many decent small record stores nearby then buying online is a necessity not an option. From my personal experience, which I'm sure isn't unique, file sharing has made me spend *more* money on music than previously?? hi folks. i apologize, in advance, for what may be considered by most an off topic post. however, as most members have discovered... you can get a great deal of answers to questions found outside the realm of the usual [313] discussions. here goes... i like to make mixes for listening in my car. i use two turntables and a mixing board. the end result is a large .wav file that i can then burn to a CD. my question is this; is there a way, through some sound editing app such as sound forge6.0, to mark the .wav file w/ track time information? i enjoy the experience of listening to a music mix as a whole, but sometimes it's nice to skip ahead to a particular tune. i guess i desire the same setup as you would find in a mix CD bought from a store. if anyone has any instructions, feel free to answer me off-list. if you wish to share your knowledge w/ the rest of the list all the better. thanks in advance. peace, lrh

I've been thinking about this a lot myself lately. Back in 95 I read an interview with Alex Reece who said how much he was inspired by UR and their melodies. Last week I went back to some of my favourite d+b records from 94 -99. While mixing some of my favourite examples of what would later be given the kiss of death by the label 'inteligent'. If you listen to some of the early reece, pim, wax doctor, the d+b that was put out on RS (esp the model 500 remixes), hidden agenda, creative source stuff etc there are IMHO a lot of at least superficial similarities to the detroit sound - the momentum of the beats, the use of strings, new sounds, eq levels in the production, use of dissonance, the funk in the spaces between the beats. Mixing them to maximise the beat and bass switches and absolutely minimise breakdowns I find it quite close in feeling and emotion to the feeling and emotion of dancing to a long deep soulful techno mix - with a big smile on my face :) It was these tunes that started making me want to find out more about this detroit sound I was hearing about. The mix I refer to isn't 100% perfect, but if anyone is interested I can host it for others to hear what I'm talking about. Maybe it's just nostalgia (already!) :)) -- has anyone else experienced or thought about something similar along these themes? Matt - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

hi folks. has anyone checked out the breaking cycles EP from terry brookes? it's fantastic material... i can see why mr. craig snatched up the breaking cycles tune for his mix. wish i could get my hands on more deepart vinyl. peace, lrh
(313) [313] Happy Holidays, list folks.
...and happy new year. :^) lrh.
(313) [313] mixtape of a different media.
hi folks. i'm just curious to know if other members have made the move from mixing down live 2 a tape deck to mixing down live 2 a hard drive... then to a CD. i know it's helped my creativity a great deal... as long as i have disk space i can screw around with whichever tracks i care to. later i can save or delete the end results. in additon, it's nice to create a 79 minute cavalcade of electronic soul as opposed to only 45 minutes for one tape-side. just looking for any thoughts or opinions. to those of you who actually play out to a crowd on a regular basis, do you make mixes solely for your own listening enjoyment? what are they like... freer? less restricted? peace, lrh
(313) [313] new Moodymann LP on Peacefrog?
hi folks. anyone got any info on a new LP from mr. dixon. supposedly it's called keep 'em peeled. i'm always the last to know. oh well.
(313) [313] KDJ label art.

(313) [313] fun fact.
hi folks. not only is dan ryan a brilliant, deep track from a theo parrish EP... it's also a super-wide, seven lane express-way in chicago. huh... did not know that until now. :^) peace, lrh

(313) [313] a realization.
hi folks. i have come to the realization that i am a far better music collector than a music maker. as a result of this epiphany, i am sadly parting with a roland mc303 groovebox. if anyone is interested you can check out my seller ID on ebay, eyesight4. i apologize for the crass commercialism. peace lrh
(313) [313] rockin' doubles.
hi folks. i was palying around with two copies of dbx, losing control... it's a good thing. the more out of synch the beats get, the more appropriate the phrasing of the track becomes. i'm losing control. can anyone recommend other D tracks that are fun to toy with? peace, lrh
RE: (313) Elitism
this sort of infighting is exactly what caused the demise of the hair-metal mailing list... oh wait, maybe that's not such a bad thing. :^P peace lrh -Original Message- From: T.J.Johnson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, November 09, 2002 8:01 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Elitism In contrast, Jason, I was saying that I HAVE witnessed tons of elitism; most of it being from this list! I too am saying no names, but damn--is it really that necessary for people to make it a point to shxt on others verbally (or the lack there-of). I mean these fxckers join the list for some reason, but it is definitely not to network. It seems like they just wanna show the world how much knowledge they have about techno--ooh, aren't we cool? It just makes me laugh that these internet elitists are so fxcking cool in there own little worlds and it's almost like the real world doesn't exist. All I know is that whenever I get anywhere in this business, I'll do my best to help the ones trying to make it. I do what I can now (even though it aint much). Whatever, I'm done--it's no use. Good luck Jason, and everyone else. I hope we all find our place in this world soon and quit shxtting on each other in the process. I'm no better than anyone else, period. [are they still around?] case in point WHAT!!?? And you call yourself a FAN???!!! Hell I have a turn table in my car, in my bathroom, I've gotten to the point where I refuse to go anywhere witch doesn't assure me twenty four hour access to a turntable. And in my day we didn't have those fancy smancy 1200's we used to use Fisher Price Close N' Plays and we LIKED IT! does the elitist post to this list? -Original Message- From: techno [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 08, 2002 7:46 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) 8-Mile - Detroit music history I would like to see a comprehensive Detroit techno and Chicago house chronology of the music year by year. It may be more practical and cost effective to do something like this on a digital medium like CD-ROM or DVD since you would be covering a lot of ground with artist and record label discography's. Actually DVD would be ideal for this since you have the options of audio and video and it can store a vast amount of information. Techno Rebels is a good book going over the history and origins of the music but it really doesn't delve into the more obscure Detroit techno records and labels that should not be excluded from history. Of coure the elitist will disagree with me on this. on 11/8/02 5:49 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: actually - that's a really nice website. gives credit and some history to the trailblazers of Detroit music in #3 which brings me to the topic of books about the very same- to you Detroiters and Detroit historians a question - which books give the best history of Detroit music? (313) [313] ugly edits - theo parrish.
hi folks. a few days ago i was at bent crayon[cleveland, ohio record shop]... just shuffling through the stacks. at the end of my digging, and as i was making my purchase, i was offered the chance to lay hands upon and play the 2nd and 3rd ugly edits EP's. damn! it's some brilliant material! i am by no means a funk and disco historian so it was a wonderful opportunity to hear some great cut-ups. sadly, the EP's were not for sale... part of john's private collection. i just wish to convey that it's a D A M N shame that these titles are not readily available to those of us who A L S O know. i mean, i understand the legalties that one has to consider when releasing a work that is sick with uncleared, and i guess fairly obvious samples... but i promise, i won't tell anybody where i got the record from. i'll only play it through headphones, late at night. right now, there are auctions involving these very releases... the bidding is up to $35.00+ with several days to go until closing. fah! oh well. wouldn't it be great if releases by artists like theo and kenny and keith and shake and so forth were actually mass-produced like so many britney spears records. imagine stepping into a rite-aid and picking up shades of jae on mint vinyl for a few bucks. that and a cold yoo-hoo would be sweet. : ) sorry for the rant.. i'm just a tad frustrated. curse you.. i mean happy listening you ugly edits owners. peace lrh
