2020-10-15 Thread Lori Polemenakos
One of our local Dallas techno producers, Blixaboy (aka Wanz Dover), is on
this lineup -- thrilled to see Charivari Detroit doing another virtual
festival! The last one was excellent.

Highly recommend checking out Blixaboy's Azanian Funk album here -- I Am
Eternity is the standout track for me and why I purchased it back in June:

https://stereoonstrike.bandcamp.com/album/azanian-funk

Wanz is one of the few Dallasites that's made the trip to Detroit for
Movement as often as I have. I think I've been 11 times since 2005, maybe
12 for him? You can def. hear the 313 influence in his sound. Cheers!

Re: Movement Post Mortem

2016-06-02 Thread Lori Polemenakos
Agreed, the only afterparty I went to was the Ellum showcase at Populux on
Saturday (hey, I'm 44 now and had a lung infection and was on antibiotics
the whole week prior) but it was a treat to see the crowd there waking up
to and suddenly "getting" the utterly flawless MAARS and Convextion sets.
Maceo Plex was the draw, but his wife Christine's DJ set was PURE FIRE.

You can see more of her skills here in the Odd Parents Boiler Room set:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYPVt8Ze9Rw

Gerard, not sure if you're on 313 list anymore... but I'm glad you finally
got to play a live PA set to some locals and out-of-towners, even though
you weren't booked at Movement proper. ;)

I saw a lot of geezers and very familiar faces; met lots of people who were
talented, humble and nice; I'd say the ratio of dudebros and kandi kids was
around 18%-20% tops this year, about 30% gravers, and the rest of us were
the truly dedicated heads that come every year that's possible/live within
driving distance.

This year marks the second time in 7 or 8 festivals where I saw someone get
into a fight. Glad to see that violence still isn't a thing, no matter how
large the crowd/abundant the intoxicants/etc.

Kyle Geiger's set was totally unexpected and one of my favorite highlights
of this year. I'd call him Rob Hood lite, but I mean that 100% as a
compliment in case anyone tries to misinterpret otherwise. The Stone Owl
guys were great as well, also didn't expect that kind of set mid-afternoon
and was happy to see a live bassist on the main stage. I caught some of
Matthew Dear, but I've seen him so many times that once I determined he was
going to play exactly as expected, I booked it to the Underground stage.

Get Real: Green Velvet and Claude Von Stroke body-metronoming in perfect
rhythm was utterly adorable, and I thought their set was a great mix of
electrofunk, tech house and classic electro tracks. Guys if you're reading
this, sorry but you were head-nodding and bobbing in perfect harmony -- fun
to watch AND hear! Too bad they stacked some of the best performers in
competing timeslots on closing out Monday was great to catch some of
Modeselektor and I loved Chris Liebling's set but totally missed Kevin
Saunderson, Guy Gerber, Danny Tenaglia and Nina Kraviz. boo :(

Magda's set was great as always; Heidi closed out her set with some Prince
tracks, but every time she turned down the music and clapped for people to
sing along, nobody did. Gurl. You didn't read your audience right... at
all. Still love her though!

Lastly, as a huge fan of Big Freedia, it was gratifying to see her perform
directly after DJ Godfather. I think a lot of people wouldn't say she "fit
in" with the festival's format, and I could've done without some of her
covers in the middle of her set, but she always brings it like it's her
last performance on Earth. She never fails to put on a good show, and by
the time her set was over, everyone's booties were definitely shaking!

Also, getting to hug and take a photo with Juan Atkins was fun. I managed
not to totally go full mental in front of him for the second time meeting
him and gushing a little, so yay for my ability to show a tiny amount of
restraint.

Just booked our tickets, staying at the Motorcity. It's been a couple of
years and wow, stuff is booked up faster than ever -- anyone actually get
use out of the VIP tickets vs. regular weekend passes? We don't drink at

Re: (313) Movement 2013

2013-06-11 Thread Lori Polemenakos
+1 on the underground sound system and visual layout, it sounded AMAZING
compared to previous years. That said, I felt there was a bit too much
soundbleed between the Electric Forest and Red Bull/Main Stage areas,
honestly. And while slightly less so, some soundbleed was still noticeable
between the RB/Main area and the Made in Detroit stage setup -- which also
kind of shocked me with the sheer amount of house music that was played
throughout most people's sets. It created a sort of cognitive dissonance
for me, based on the talent booked this year and what I've come to expect
from the Made in Detroit area at previous festivals.

Now, I'm an old-school and now-reformed househead who has no trouble
singing along with 99% of the anthems (it's a soul thing, a body, thing, et
al), but that's totally NOT what I'm flying to Detroit to listen to every
year. I was kind of disappointed that there wasn't nearly as much minimal
or even militant-sounding techno as I'm used to being exposed to --
especially from new (or at least undiscovered-to-me) artists -- at this
year's Movement. Nicole Moudaber's set was one of the standout surprises
for me; hearing a set like hers that blows me away and I instantly fall in
love with is one of my favorite things about the festival, and for that,
I'm extremely grateful. To hear a woman playing such a hardcore,
relentlessly banging set made me both proud and hopeful that the whole
female DJs are just gimmicks mindset will eventually fade out of the
public's musical consciousness, though how long that'll take is anyone's
guess...DJ Minx had her audience on lockdown as well, but I thought Magda's
festival set was kind of meh this year (though her afterparty set
delivered everything I'd hoped to hear earlier that day, so I really
shouldn't complain...).

Despite having tickets to the Bass Ain't on The Boat afterparty (because
hey, The Upbeats! They flew all the way from NZ - when am I gonna get THAT
opportunity again?), it got relocated to a less pedestrian-friendly spot
than the original boat setup had been, so the only one I actually made it
to was the Life and Death Detroit gig on Sunday at St. Andrew's Hall.. and
oh my GOD, so glad I had my earplugs in!! Nothing can compare to being
massaged from my scalp to the soles of my feet by a well-engineered wall of
sound in the wee hours of the morning. It took me a couple hours to realize
there was a different stage setup downstairs, and I was pleasantly
surprised at the level of sound distinction/speaker muffling between the
two (even moreso because one was essentially stacked right on top of the
other, with the venue above packed to capacity with people dancing and
everything that wasn't tied down vibrating along with the beat).

Cheers to all the sound engineers, artists, volunteers and talent bookers
who pulled this year's level of professionalism off -- especially the
massive sound, camera and lighting rigs, nicely designed visual set-ups,
streaming video/sound recordings via be-at.tv, Red Bull software/hardware
demo room near the Underground stage, etc. Plus, everyone booked at the
festivals and the only afterparty I went to seemed to be playing during
their assigned slots, and each artist's gear looked like it got swapped out
in a timely and safe manner between sets. There weren't any last-minute
schedule changes due to talent not being able to get into the country or
missing a flight (that I'm aware of, anyway), which I know has caused some
headaches for Paxahau in the past. All of the stuff mentioned above
requires massive amounts of coordination, party-throwing experience and
teamwork to pull off seamlessly, and I know from personal experience how
hard that is... especially by day 3, when everyone's sleep-deprived and
hungover to the Nth degree. :)

Didn't see any people passing out from heatstroke this time around, and the
crowd seemed a bit smaller than it was during my last visit in 2011, which
was... what, nearly 100k attendees? Curious to know how many people
actually went this year... at any rate, it was a vacation well-spent!

quite surprised by the degree of aural clarity. I did not go down

Here, mostly lurking, probably heading to Detroit for the festival
next year after defecting to Mutek this year out of curiosity (ugh,
mistake!). Still dream of seeing The Black Dog do a live PA after
going bonkers the first time I heard Spanners, but I'll need more than
a fortnight's notice to make arrangements to get to Sheffield from
Dallas.

But nothing compares to Drexciya and Model 500. Actually, the first
time I heard Juan play Night Drive live, I wept from sheer joy. Same
with Derrick and Strings of Life.

Of course, I've debated hitting up Movement Torino as well - not to
derail this hi everybody check-in, but has anyone here done that
round of the festival? Nothing compares to Detroit, of course; it's
just that like everyone else on this list, I'm getting older, and I
want to cram in as many techno tourist adventures as I can before I go
deaf and my knees wear out. :)

I've been off and on Hyperreal in some way or other since... I'm
guessing 1995 or 96? I subbed to this list a few years back and
haven't regretted it.

*waves to Denise, Frank, Kevin, etc.*

There's a few heads here keeping up the Dallas Techno scene, but it's
literally a handful of married dudes, some Denton college kids
(Cygnus, BetDat, Ynfynyt Scroll), Minto (Down Low) driving back and
forth from Wichita Falls, Gerard Hansen (Convextion) and Wanz Dover
(Blixaboy) busting out the occasional Laptop Deathmatch show.

Me? I'm just a fan, not a musician, DJ or producer. I enjoy dancing;
techno's the fuel, my body's just the engine.

Yes, music (Detroit or wherever it is) is a serious thing to me.

Re: (313) what up Detroit

2012-05-28 Thread Lori Polemenakos
Just saw Dopplereffekt Friday in Dallas and I can confirm it's the
more ambient stuff, Infophysix style. Great show, though - but I
suspect many people just don't know WHAT to expect when they play. It
was very, very Detroit!

From reports of other Doppler shows, they tend to play the atmospheric tracks
as apposed to any of the Dataphysics material.

Anyways, looking forward to hearing some reviews from their 313 performance.

The word I'm hearing is that Dopplereffekt got booed at a recent
show in NY. So this could be interesting, at least. I still play a
couple tracks from the Infophysix EP and they certainly had an
 impact back in the day.

So, see you at 8:30 and we'll have something to talk about!

I'm kind of curious to see what Dopplereffekt will actually do --
Underground stage at 7-8, otherwise I'm open. Denise, how
about just picking a time and place and let's go with it.

Re: (313) the drexciyan immersion project (was Re: (313) Drexciya reissues)

2011-09-07 Thread Lori Polemenakos
For me, I tend to think of Drexciya's music as an overall ouevre; for
example, put on The Quest and read Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues
Under the Sea or for that matter, cycle through their entire catalog
on a low level (especially if you've got, say, a house wired with
surround sound in every room and a central broadcasting source) and
spend a dreary winter weekend with Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus
Trilogy.

But Frank, I totally agree with you - few tracks stand out on their
own and bear repeated plays as singles; that said, when you throw one
into a mix unexpectedly, I've seen people just lose their minds on the
dance floor. It's almost the secret handshake of techno once you're
somewhere besides Detroit.

There's no denying Stinson's influence on many Detroit artists and
producers, or that Drexciya's trademark bubbling and popping funk
sounds are audible in, say, Luke Eargoggle's tracks, giving them a
Frankenstein's castle in the year 2060 quality. My only regret is
that they never produced an animated feature fleshing out the Aquabahn
mythology with a full soundtrack; seems like it'd be perfect for a
midnight double feature along with that French 1973 classic,
Fantastic Planet.

Has anyone considered selectively scoring a silent film with their
work? If not, I'd love to see/hear it... a girl can dream!

Re: (313) Fwd: Movement Detroit 2011 - Day 3

2011-06-03 Thread Lori Polemenakos
Y'all are not seeing the throngs of boring techno tourists like
myself, who may not have been quite as eye-catching as the neon-loving
kindergartners roving the area. Or the amazingly wicked dancing that
Denise Dalphond was doing at virtually every stage - maybe her tshirt
and shorts weren't photo-worthy, but her moves certainly were.

Once you get to a certain age and you're in it for the music and not
the attention/other things *cough - youknowwhatImean - cough* then you
know better than to go out to a festival in just your panties with 50
bags full of props to carry around during the daytime.

There was everything there - dudes who looked like they'd teleported
from a pub in the UK, other DJs from varying nationalities,
non-caucasians, the elderly, children in strollers. 99,000+ people
means variety; some just weren't as eye-poppingly visually striking as
some of the folks on the RA pages are and therefore went undocumented.

I seriously wondered how half the more, uh, interesting (and fluffily
attired) attendants were managing the toilets, but was too busy
chasing beats to ask. That said, I passed one girl in a neon bikini
and rave boot-sock-thingies who was crying about how wet and gross her
ankles were when it started to pour and busted out laughing - along
with, unfortunately, about 10 dude-bros in polo shirts who were right
behind me.

This is the first time I've noticed a massive bro contingent and the
festival; it seems that they've co-opted the culture and are starting
to outnumber the Kandi Kids, Gravers and old-schoolers I usually see
there.

Disclaimer: this is my 6th festival, so not sure what it was like
before 2005. Also, I'm a white girl.
