Wow I had no idea those forums got that long in like, 2 days...

Can't believe the publicist went public, if the promotors had hired lawyers
LL should have got his own lawyers quickly onto it to shut it down and
negotiate an outcome.

On my quick analysis if it was unlikely that the promotors would get their
$ back the best thing for them was to just go public and win it that way
(even if it meant it showed how naive they were). Sadly, to recover $12000
by using lawyers is probably going to be a waste of $ - I can see a legal
bill about $5000 at least (which would cover 10 - 15 hours work), totally
not worth it. Even if they got judgment there is the question of how it
could be enforced.

Even if the promoters were a bit naive, for him to take nearly €12,000 is
out of order. I can imagine promoters will think twice about booking him
after this episode. I'm sure it happens lots of times that artist don't

Hi all

Happy easter to all! Last night in Sydney Rick Wilhite played for 4
hours, absolutely incredible. Played house, detroit, and a bit of the
good old techno just for a good measure.

After the party he got a bit bombarded with techno nerd questions, but
we talked barbecue he thinks the best ribs in Detroit are in Chicken
Shack on Northwestern Highway.

I only saw him once in Detroit DEMF - I don't think he tours much?

Moodymann played here on Thursday and Stacey Pullen is playing today.
Didn't make it out to Moodymann and not going to Stacey, but it's very
odd to have everyone in town this Easter long weekend.

Yeah sometimes he just comes out with great track selection, and

even mixed pretty damn well as well as having a good selection. So I
think it really depends on the club, and the style. Don't write him

(313) Anthony Shakir in Sydney

2011-10-29 Thread Mel N
Hi all

Just came back from seeing Shake play at this party in Sydney - Boom
Boom at Spice Cellars in Martin Place.  It wasn't the best promoted
party but I'm glad people came out to see him.

Great tracks, really liked how he mixed up house, techno and beats.
Always good to hear stuff I haven't heard before... and although this
was (supposedly) marketed as a 'house' party, Shake played plenty of
techno, including some Rob Hood. Everyone went nuts when he dropped
Jupiter Jazz. There was a bit of mixing on the off beat and just
playing around with the beats in general and it overall reminded me of
some of the beats in some of the records he has produced.

Shake is playing Melbourne on Monday night - it's pretty much a long
weekend in Melbourne due to the Melbourne Cup Holiday. Mercat
Basement, 456 Queen St, Melbourne. Mon Oct 31, doors 10pm, $23.50.

It was great to also see Shake here in Australia, the flight is so
long (he told me 5 + 15 hours) and I had ruled out seeing him here
years ago. He was in good spirits and told me he's been djing out a
lot more overseas :)

Cheers

(313) Reporting in from Paris

2011-09-11 Thread Mel N
Hi all

I just thought I'd report in. Saw Derrick May and Rolando play at Showcase
on Friday night.

Interesting the venue was a boathouse by the Seine under Alexandre III
bridge before it became a venue. The venue was odd - guys in button shirts,
loafers etc and girls in short dresses and heels. There was a VIP section
where people slammed down bottles of champagne. I think the place was a pick
up joint. The drinks were super expensive (5 euro for water/ softdrink, 8
euro for a heineken, 12 for vodka redbull). However the guestlist is free if
you sign up online and you arrive before 1.30 am. I signed up at 11pm and
got an instant response back that I was on the list. Luckily you just have
to show the door an email.

I didn't meet the promotor, so I couldn't tell you how Derrick and Rolando
ended up on the bill there. There were a few usual clubbing kids there
though.

I don't know who was on before Derrick, but it was just some techno, i think
slightly more minimal style.

I couldn't name any trax, I think Derrick played a few usual ones he always
plays (but still welcome...) I haven't seen Derrick play this well in ages,
despite the crowd. I think there were a few happy cheesy moments, but
overall spot on, tight mixing, pretty good track selection. He played from 2
- 4

Rolando came on 4 and totally just smashed it out of the ballpark. Over the
years I've noticed how uncompromising he is with the tunes and he just plays
what he does best... slamming hard but funky at the same time...and in this
case I think some of the crowd left (but could have been due to
tiredness). I think he played a few things that totally reminded me of
the older harder UR stuff but 'new'. I think there was new Red Planet in
there... He played all of Jaguar, BUT the crowd didn't pick up on it really
so in a way that was good because it was as though the song was just another
track. Anyway he played until 6.20 am, and after that it was strange but
nice to come out of the bottom of the bridge to see the lights still
glistening on the Seine, and the sun just about to rise.

Cheers!
Melody

  Hi Roland.

Berwick Street, London W1, is still more or less the Capital's record-shop

Try Music Video Exchange at 95 Berwick Street, London: Telephone 020

 Hi 313-ers
I've been reading the 313 list for very long time and now is the time to
 send my first email/request.
Next week I'm travelling to London (from Holland). Part of my trip will be
 some record-hunting ;)
It's been long since I've visited London and I'm afraid I've lost track of
all the good (second hand) record stores in London (I know there were quit a
few in and around Soho area)
Do any of you have tips for where to find those nice record stores?

Any other tips regarding music, good exhibits etc.. are also welcome

 Thanks!

 Regards
 Roland
