Re: (313) Laurent Garnier

2004-04-26 Thread Nocturnals
I have seen Laurent Garnier on a number of occassions -- once in Montreal, once
in Europe and another here in the US.

I agree - I think his programming is flawless and his ability to put himself
on the dancefloor is what seperates him from the pack. He has a true
understanding of dance music and is a DJ who balances the fine line of
educating and entertaining -- it's what makes him great, period.

The same set -- sure, one thing is for certain in a Garnier set is that you're
bound to hear Donna Summer's I Feel Love or Love to Love You Baby, a handful of
classic Chicago acid tracks and certainly some from Detroit.

Playing a few offbeat cuts mixed in with his favorites does not constitute as
the same set for 5 years

Amusing.

Good one Andrew! Here's one of my favs...which happened to me about a year or
so ago...

In the middle of my set I drop the Jacksons Can You Feel It and the crowd
goes wild. Funny thing is -- this girl comes up to me and says Can you play
the original?! and i'm like Huh?

You heard me! Can you play the original of this?

Bewildered I reply, THIS IS THE ORIGINAL!

And she persists in an argumentive way and says No it's not...the original has
a woman singing over it with a harder beat! What kind of DJ are you?

Later that night it dawned on me...she was referring to that god-awful cheese
track by the Tamperer (circa 1996?) that SAMPLED the Jacksons!!! I was tickled
silly by it all and still laugh to this day about it.

hi all - quick report from detroit. arrived in late and after hotel check-in
headed over to the scan 7 rooftop party. thin crowd, but mike grant was
pounding it and buzz goree dropped some great stuff in the back room. left
there and
headed to the cork town tavern. what a great party! i spent nearly all of the
night in the 7th city room. john tejada was unreal...first time i have seen
him DJ and he had the crowd eating out of his hand!

dan bell rocked later on from 1:30-ish to 3-something, even dropping losing
control with a sexy blend of driving techno and techhouse.

and now...off to the festival.

Ho Maarten,

No idea about the compilation, but I just grabbed a copy of the Journey Home
EP from Sonic Groove records in NYC for $25. I haven't come across it anywhere
and from my understanding, it's one of the rarer 12's. One that I never owned

2002-03-01 Thread Nocturnals
You might find some interesting points on this made by John Selway on
Futurebpm.com. I interviewed him and we talked quite a bit about dance music
in America and so on...

Check it out...www.futurebpm.com, click FEATURE.

Also, you've got radio and MTV here in America that is a complete joke. Turn
on your FM radio and aside from college radio or NPR, what do you have?
Country, rock roll and hip hop. Maybe 2 variety stations that are all
playing the same thing in one way or another as every station on the dial.

Turn on MTV. How many Britney Spears and N Sync videos can we see? (Well,
last time I checked MTV I haven't seen any videos...but that's a whole other
story)

Lots of reasons why dance music isn't larger. The support that would be
needed just isn't there. Look at Europe or even Canada...their radio plays
FAR more dance music than we do. When I was in Germany, I recalled seeing Ken
Ishii on their MTV, interviews with Laurent Garnier, and so forth. Here in
the US, MTV the program AMP made SORT of an attempt, but who's watching on
a Sunday at 2AM???

The UK has the BBC and countless other stations that really support dance
music. Italy has a 24 hour station devoted to house music. Here? Clear
Channel dominates the FM dial across the country with the same music across
the board. =(

Just my $.02 ... but do check out the Selway interview ...

Later all!

I think a huge part of why the attempts to marklet house and techno on a

easily remembered and have lyrics than be sung along to. I'm guessing
thet's the huge appeal the house and techno are often missing.

Hence the explosion of Everything but the girl. The grand reception of

Hip hop is as close as we've come the beats are as heavy and great but

In terms of dance music getting serious attention-
I think the problem with house and techno is that there is not a good

Labels like to market stereotypes of Rebellious, Subversive, Cool, and
more recently pop-conscious-satiric characters that middle-class suburban

look for stereotypes- you have the gay club scene, the middle to lower
class minorities- but without the hip-hop egos and fashion, then also the
computer and synth geeks, none of which are sexy or cool to todays
teenagers. But when the London Rave scene appeared- here was something
more marketable- white kids sneaking out at night, taking drugs, and
partying to rave music, not to mention new marketable fashion trends to go
along with it. And of course, once they found something marketable, they
further bastardized the music into formulated candy-coated crap, just as
they did with disco 25 years ago.

It would be a shame if they didn´t release that one on vinyl!

There's suppose to be a brand new Stacey Pullen track on the next No
Categories 5 comp (Ubiquity), and it's not the remix he did for As One.
I'm told the tune fuckin' rocks. There's also a new P'taah track on
 that
 comp.

Very cool.

Any word on Black Flag Recordings? The label has been kind of dormant for a
while...I heard something about a Pure Science release being the next
one...?

Re: [313] New drexciya // Info Needed

2002-02-01 Thread Nocturnals
Hi all,

New Drexciya album Harnessed the Storm LP out on Tresor, I believe released
this past Tuesday January 29th. Definitely grab yourself a copy...and then,
there is the 12 Rob mentioned, which is also on Tresor.

And while where on the Drexciyan tip, you could also check out The Other
People Place LP Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe on Warp and Transllusion The
Opening of the Cerebral Gate on Supremat. All stuff rumored to be Drexciya,
or at least have some of the members involved.

Hope this helps.

Musically,
Kered

Could someone drop me the info on the new drexciya release? A friend of
mine just mentioned it to me and I must have missed it when it came out.
 Help?

 12 - Digital Tsunami - 3 tracks - came out a month or so ago i think.
lp - Harnessed the Storm - 10 tracks on the cd, 7 on the 2x12 - out this
week or next week i think.

i've got a copy of the 12 and the vinyl version of the lp. the tracks are
decent, well produced, if kinda lacking the edge of the older material imho.

Re: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)

2001-08-16 Thread Nocturnals
hello-

i'm new to the list here, but the topic of FinalScratch caught my eye. There
seems to be a lot of worry with people feeling threatened by new technology
and the repercussions one such technology may have on the vinyl industry as
a whole.

times are changing, but I myself am a true vinyl addict. there's nothing
better than digging through bins and bins of old records and finding that one
gem. and the same holds true for new vinyl. listening to all the new music
coming out, and then owning it. there's really no words to describe it.

which leads me to mp3's and such. in case anyone hasn't noticed, look at the
number of CD djs that have just popped up over night. Napster, a new
technology, spawned loads of overnight DJs who don't take the time to seek
out the music...rather their form of seeking the music out is by them passing
hot tunes to one another and also downloading them. One record i've been
seeking now for years is a Number of Names 'Sharevari'. Can't find it. But do
a search on Napster...or better yet, Audiogalaxy. It's there. But owning
some MP3, is that special? It somehow makes it all less exciting downloading
an MP3.

FinalScratch atleast designed a form of technology that allows DJs to play
the MP3 file the way they'd spin a record. And I have to say, that's clever.
I'm all for taking it to the next level and things of that sort, but is MP3
technology, distribution, and so forth the Final Answer
