Didn't Davy Jones collaborate with Derek May on Strings of Life?? The locker

Re: [313] Global Underground series - Ghetto Tech mixes

2001-05-10 Thread Oliver Barkovic
You know this is a good topic... I am putting a mix(amongst other goodies)
up on my site soon to give everyone a heads up for me and the DEMF. So I
record 85min at a get together at my place a few weeks ago.
Lotsa good mixes, some scratching, backspins... you know DJ energy that
you get when you play. Well I can definately hear mistakes...in my mind they
are anyways. None of my friends can hear them but you know...I'm a
little afraid to put
it up and it get ripped for whatever reason. Not by anyone on this list
but I
know others who will disect it and then post it to lists and so on and
so on.
I know it shouldn't matter but I'm trying to get gigs and you know

For example I played with a big DJ recently in TO and the questions people
asked my about him where just rude. Just a tip... don't ask musicians to
comment negatively about other musicians, its awkward and not nice. My only
comment to these inquires was "At least you know it was real" and there answers
were an unconvincing "Ya, I guess.."

So the mix thats gonna magically appear on my website is gonna be one unedited
chunk.

Whew...

There's a Recloose mix cd out in the near future on Belgian label, News,
entitled: Jigsaw Music.

Haven't heard Matt's style, but I love the way the Random Noise Generation
disc, Links in the Chain, & the RNG live set marry up hip-hop, spoken-word
samples & techno influences to such devastating effect.

ok,
here are clues of the track that i was specifically looking for when i asked
about the chicago disco classics with an electronic edge.

this is going to be funny...

"Just a little bit of ??? tonight
makes you feel alright

Just a little bit rocking to the night
makes you wanna hold it tight

It's the music that you hear
change(?) to the stratosphere

you can fly, you can h...(?)
you can even touch the skyyy..."

the track has moroder-esque electronic drum sounds
and a funky synth bass line accompanied by short chord sounds playing the
16th notes.

thanks

Out of tune and just weird, guys who look like your typical studio musicians

Hip hop originated as electronic music, so getting back to the "roots" of hip
hop with live musicians won't work.

So ...I was at a small gathering last night of
industry people that came to hear about Black Music:
Past , Present & Future with Jimmy Starks & Hal
Jackson speaking.
Of course I would go!!!
who would not want to hear these two HISTORICAL men
speak about this music & their amazing lives.

Some of the things you are talking about were covered
during Q&A at the end.
Something I have always wondered, is why Does detroit
techno ( a black music) always get over looked as
such.
Or maybe I am over looking things, but I dont think I
see Vibe writing about the music or the aritist and
their accomplishments... what about BET, or the black
music departments in record labels, the black radio
stations etc...

I am kind of talking all over the place but, Jimmy
also talked about sampling and how he hates that you
can hear him more now than we he made records with
James brown etc.. and he gets nothing for it, and
people probably have no idea it is his guitar they
sampled.
He also feels very strong about live music, and
everyone was talking about how live instruments are
coming back.
And the electronic music will die out soon.
A&R development people were talking about how they are
soon to have certain R&B/Hip-hop acts go on the road
with live bands instead of a DJ etc... R&B produces
are talking about working with live musicians from now
on and creating more jobs in the community as well as
building albums not hit cookie cutter singles.

I do beleive there is a strong future for electronic
music, I mean think about when you have kids, they
will grow up with this music always listening to
electronic music. Just think what the music they make
will sound like!! When my generation grew up & before
we had many influences, but there was know blueprint
for detroit techno, the black music of the past
present & future.

again talking all over the place.sorry, bare with me..

Hal, talked of how he hates this eminem character
getting all of these awards ... it really seemed to
bother him because it is a black music, well DR> Dre
does make his tracks right,I completely understand
where he is coming from and have even heard the same
comments about techno & how this scene is mostly
white, and the white artist get all of the press,
credit,deals etc.

I dont know where I am going with this , just thought
I would share my night with ya'll.. I have lots more
to say but will shut up as I know someone on here is
going to rip me to shreds as always.(not that I care)

Haha I saw a Jamie Foxx special on BET a while back and I heard the infamous
song!

Very funny, I wonder if he knows...I saw him at a Raptors game last year and I
thought "Should I go up to him and sing it?", "Should I ask him about TP?" but I
settled on singing it out loud to my girlfriend hoping he would hear ; ) I
don't think he did, its quite noisy with 19000 people trying to get in the ACC
(hehehe) but it was funny my girlfriend looked at me like I was (more of) a
dork.

I noticed that too: the track on that EP is similar, if not the same as Love's
got me high. I suspected that the 2 brothers -record is canadian, had something
to do with Intangible / Parker. When that track became a sort of mini-anthem few
years ago, it seemed like there was almost dozen versions of it. Even Fresh
fruit re-released it with different remixes (with Sterac's slammin techno
mix!!!).

>which is the original? what's the sample? anyone got a spare of the "2
Brothers..."?

Geesh, I can't remember which one came first, the Intangible or the Jackin trax
one... It was around
-95/96. I'll guess the Intangible was first. Don't know the sample, but it
propably originates from some sleeez-soul/R'n'B-act from the 90's.

Is this good or bad for our music and culture?

When I say "this" I mean the fact that the mainstream press, the

Re: [313] Mistress Barbra

2000-11-10 Thread Oliver Barkovic
Hey all, there is a interview with her and a bunch of other Canadian DJ's in
the current issue of Air Canada magazine, so if you fly AC then you can read
it. She and Fred Everything are on the cover. Its a less than flattering
interview with her, she comes off as incredibly arrogant and she explains in
painfully stupid detail the spelling and reason for her name. Yeeech!!

I heard her play really crappy stuff here in Hamilton about 6 months ago. It
was just bad club techno and trance.

Not a fan.

I would say there could be no discussion of music and philosophy without
mentioning the Futurists; probably the only school of philosophical thought
that espoused a musical form. The Futurist Symphonies of cars honking,
scraping
steel and construction noise had an obvious impact on the "Industrial"
music
that came 60 years later (and Industrial begat Detroit Techno: thereby
staying

On Topic)

But speaking of contemporary continental philosophers, I'd say Markus Pop
probably does a more interesting and successful critique of Deluze's
Nomadology

in a musical form than (for instance) DJ Spooky ever did. I don't think Pop
concerns himself with philosophical baggage in terms of making his music,
though: I think his approach is more of a process-oriented one (which in an
of
itself is a Deluzean manner of creating things like "folds") but not one
that's

directly referencing any philosophy.

Whatever. I want to press a button and hear a beat.

e

ps: every department has its own focus. The Architecture program I was a
part

of years ago worked within a feminist philosophical umbrella (though not
everybody in the program subscribed to that viewpoint). It sounds odd until
you
think that a society that could come up with sayings like "a woman's place
is

in the home" must use sexuality as some kind of determining factor in
architectural forms and identities.

One of my favorite track by Juan!!! It has that "At Les" kinda drum sound
and the b-line sounds amazing loud.

I have played it a million times, one of my faves!

p.s. went to see Thomas Brinkman last night in TO, no funky turntables but
his live set was excellent.

Art et al

2000-06-23 Thread Oliver Barkovic
Hello, I don't know who mentioned the state sanctioning of Malevich by the
Russian propagandists but I think that Constructivism is most directly
relatable to Techno. Artists like Malevich, Rodchenko, Lissitzky and
Gontcharova(Rodchenko's wife) were multi-media artists and graphic designers
who were very minimal and direct in their art. Isn't that what techno is
about? Constucting direct music with minimal means.

I saw huge exhibits of Rodchenko and Bonnard at the MOMA and Rothko at The
Whitney in the same day in NYC 2 years ago!!

Good Thread!!

2000-06-21 Thread Oliver Barkovic

Nice!! Finally a good thread!

Rarest record: Dinosaur L 24-7 music the album with "Go Bang" on it and 5
other tracks!! Got it for a buck at a cheesy TO trance(oh oh) store.

Most Favorite record: Hard question, I love that "Jazz is the Teacher" by
Juan, Moritz and Fehlman on Tesor and also R-Tyme on Fragile and Carls ep on
R&S called (I think) 69-Lite Music with Micro-Luvr and My Machines. There
are so many...

Most Rare Detroit record: Reese on Incognito - The Savage and Beyond - I
think its rare, I have the only copy I have seen.

Coupla other things:

Lounge music thread: Gwen and Holly I think:

Esquival and Sun-Ra Arkestra are some of the first musicians to use
"synths" and electronic stuff in there music. I think that I read somewhere
that Sun-Ra said that electronic instruments are interesting but he uses
them to make "new" sounds. I guess he means if he wanted something to sound
like a trumpet he would use a trumpet. If you like Carl Craigs jazz stuff
you'll love Sun-Ra. But be warned Sun-Ra can be musically very extreme (ie
free). So open up your mind.

Original acid track thread:

Did "Tomorrow Never Knows" come out before or after Revolver?? The 25th
annversary Beatles vinyl thing had a instrumental of it that I used to play
a few years back, just speed it up and it mixes perfectly into just about
anything. (especially Bandulu and some non 4/4 stuff).

Oliver Cheeser thread:
Hopefully no-ones confusing me with this dude, I played in and around D
quite a bit.

And finally:
I think everyone on this list should read this article:

Yes! Maybe I should have clarified I meant besides Chicago, but I was
feeling overzealous as DBX was pumping out of my monitors at the time. I
didn't feel the need to mention this as an element of DB's output seems to
be a reinterpretation or permutation of some of Chicago's source ideas
(most notably SD's "Losing Control") - and anyway, most of his records were
produced after a lot of Chicago's most memorable "track" output. Another
example is how almost every genre of club music copied at least a part
Basic Channel's style even though Basic Channel was reinterpreting and
mutating dub. To extend this example, I would have put on a BC record,
irrationally posted "who gave a shit about dark 7ths, near-subs and Space
Echo before BC?" and gotten "Uhh... Tubby. Scratch."

I'd say there is no argument about the worldwide RZ1 explosion happening
post-DBX, not post-Poindexter, right? That's not a statement about either
producer - it's a statement about the world noticing, digesting and copying
a style.

Yawn! The point was: go out and check out the new Accelerate double pack,
it's dope! Work that.

Hi guys. I need a little bit of help here.

I am trying to write a paper for my Women's Studies class about women in
dance music.

I am focusing on K. Hand, but need help from any of you who might be
knowledgeable in this area.

People I've mentioned so far are: Wendy Carlos, Diana Ross, Martha Wash,
First Choice, Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Chaka Kahn. I am also aware of
Andrea Parker, Marusha, Kemistry + Storm, the Punisher, DJ Rap, Saskia,
Sandra Collins, DJ Irene, etc.

I know I am overlooking a lot of people... so... anyone... label manager,
producer, vocalist, performing artist... whatever. Women in electronic
music... or dance music... or electronic dance music.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

It's from possibly one of the most samples records in house music:
First Choice - 'Let No Man Put Asunder' (Salsoul)
'Throw' samples 2 notes and loops them.

As for Peter Shapiro and The Wire, I don't what to say, except for the
fact that he edited the recent and particularly dreadful Rough Guide to

The "Can you feel it" sample is the Jacksons off a live album from '78 I
think. Its the intro to their song 'Can U Feel it' Which has an amazing
intro and video, the Jackson about 300ft high sprinkling 'magic powder' on
New York hmmm.

I've been wondering about the origin of this myself. I've heard several
people say that it comes from "Can You Feel It" by Mr. Fingers, but a friend
of mine has it on the Chicago Trax CD compilation and he swears up and down
that it isn't on there. Was there another version that appeared on the
original vinyl?

It's 'Sandman' by Blueboy. It was originally only released as a very
limited white label, but got re-released a year or two back on a UK
label - can't quite remember which but 'Ascension' springs to mind for
some reason. Shouldn't be impossible to find...

Great track - I was listening to it today on a Sneak & Carter mixtape
