Is Magda really Detroit's hottest new star??

Richie has taken quite the liking to her lately. To be honest, i can only
assume that he has a huge crush on her. she IS quite good looking.
However, i find her dj skills lacking immensely. She is merely and AVERAGE
dj, where 90% of the bedroom hacks in detroit could spin a better set than
her. Great track selection by itself a good dj does not make. She notice
her lukewarm skills even more when you see her tagteam, and the other dj
simply blows her off the decks.

RE: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)

2001-08-15 Thread Ryan Brogan
your chances of making a dime on MP3.com is about 0 as well.

that is, until somebody like richie uses final scratch to play those mp3's
and they get popular and show up on playlists and compilations and radio
shows where final scratch is present, or a dj uses them entirely to come up
with their set, and it gets the artist some gigs or record label attention..
up until now, they were just there for people to download, but not use when
dj'ing, which is how a track really gets heard..

the problem currently on mp3.com is real but there will always be an
overwhelming load of mediocre music and a few gems, because most just aren't
that good at it.. that's ok.

if someone like, say jeff mills, releases a packet of wav files for fscratch
instead of a vinyl release, cool for us.. or maybe a reputable label like
tresor puts a site up for well known and new artists to place their music
and you know the quality is there most of the time, you'll start finding
better wav's to use when you dj with final scratch and not worry about
sifting through the multitude of mediocrity on mp3.com.. maybe ;)

the key part is that dj's can mix their own music with vinyl you already
have, and come up with better sets.. also, it's a great way to try out a
track on an audience instead of doing test presses.

people should be open-minded about this and not worry about global meltdown
occurring because a new device is out.. and if it's dollars that techno
label people are worried about, there are other ways to make money in this
world. if they're smart enough to tie their shoes or walk and chew gum at
the same time, they'll carry on. i don't see it affecting them adversely
though... but if it does, the music is more important than the inconvenience
to them, and new music's why they're there to begin with.

In theory - you're right. In practice - totally off. MP3.com promised to
offer something similar to what you speak of (...think of what it will do
to artist exposure as well as profit margins... with ...the
potential to sell hundreds of thousands or copies of a given track
worldwide
in digital format... ) . Some have made a nice amount of change on MP3.com
and even got signed to record companies, etc. However, the remainder of
artists end up buried under the thousands of others. Cost to get started
with MP3.com is $0, cost to maintain your site and administer on MP3.com is
$0, and your chances of making a dime on MP3.com is about 0 as well.

indeed...imagine when you can downlaod a track for say $.50 or $1.00
directly from a labels web site rather than pay $6 - $10 or more for the
12
which both the distributor and the shop have added their cost to. granted
it
puts the middlemen out of business but thats the breaks i guess.

just think of what it will do to artist exposure as well as profit margins.
the up front cost of maintaining an FTP server is nothing compared to those
of pressing and distributing vinyl let alone the fact that there's the
potential to sell hundreds of thousands or copies of a given track
worldwide
in digital format rather than tens of thousands on vinyl.

My 10 year high school reunion is this Saturday, July 28 (Henry Ford II,
Sterling Heights). I'm still deciding whether I'm coming back to the D for
it, but if I am, where's the party?

Seriously, I'd love to meet up with some 313ers - check out some music,
whatever.

I haven't lived in Detroit in 10 years, so I'm a bit out of touch.

Tell me what's happening.

Thanks,

2001-07-25 Thread Ryan Brogan
they've been assimilated.. no more soul..

moby.. that's pop music... those who want music to be popular have no
purpose other than to sell their product or seek praise and adulation,
something they wouldn't need if they had a purpose..

furthermore they probably are talking about disco-house and superstar dj'ing
anyways, so let them go, we don't have a movement until it's back
underground... and none of those artists on the borderline are making music
worth fighting for.. at least i wouldn't...

Honestly I think some people here have to start making up their minds,
always stating that techno is underground and should not become commercial
and at the same time always complaining about lack of exposure or being mad
whenever a big event does not pay respect to the underground.

What'll it be?

RD

In the beggining techno was underground, but then it was only techno, today
everybody that use somekind of filter is techno.

So if we talking about big events you cant make event, book Moby, FBS,
Underworld(without emerson), Paul van Dyk and call it Techno, because its
POP.

you can stop that some records go out of thier original place on scene, but
when you start to make songs with that purpose you are history for
underground electronic music. Then you go on Top of the Pops.

Long time ago Moby and crew made that.

2001-07-25 Thread Ryan Brogan

You've been assimilated to.

so beit..

He does have a purpose. He wants to sell a fucload of records.

he's bones and guts, just like the rest of us. if he(they) want/s to sell
records, no problem. we all have to work and i don't see anything wrong with
selling records.. cool job right?.. i just don't see his relevance to the
techno community, or what's left of it if he's popular like that. i think
his name comes up here because there is resentment the ramifications of pop
music, good, bad, or whatever..
whoever asked for a stance was correct.. although the lines are blurred..
it's either all pop or there is still such a thing as underground music,
which is always changing and thrives through support on a different level..
i think there will always be both, they are necessary ends.

and none of those artists on the borderline are making music
worth fighting for
.. at least i wouldn't...

good thing you stated this.

(that's why it was there, jayson.) if all the backstreet boys fans are
buying fucloads of rob hood records, he won't need our support.

Counter-Culture and all its bragging rights are just as toolish as Pop
Culture: there's just less of you to do it. Whatever happened to real
individuality?

in the end we are all the same with different perspectives, real
individuals, no two just alike... so it may be cliche', but i feel that a
message is clearer when there are fewer people involved.. make sense?

i just don't think it's as cut and dry as selling some records.. people have
egos and are selfish interests, it's human nature.

i'm off track now, hope i made some sense of it. if not, that's my own
non-sensical individuality or sleep deprivation kicking in.

take care. ;)

Call it Crème Brule. Whatever the artist said, it sounds like house music to
me.

Juan however, was calling his new music techno, and making this music
without acoustic emulations or samples of pianos, strings and house beats.
Of course, to many contemporaries, it was a new electro sound.

Like I said before, categories/labels are arbitrary, and don't really belong
in music. That's why we have names to go by.

Apples and oranges I suppose.

RE: [313] DJ Mixing - keys -

2001-04-16 Thread Ryan Brogan
Some techno is written on minor chords, and flats i.e. mills, Ramirez, But
as far as narrowing it down, it's difficult, especially when some of the
basslines are falling below scales and tuned too low for register, i.e. sub
bases and the like.
I would suggest taking some mp 3's and saving them as wave files. You can
them take those files, or their midi information and run it through some
shareware notation software.
There's too many variables to consider, and there are really no rules, or
standards. If there are, I've ignored them. That's kind of the point.

Good luck,

Ryan

What are the most frequently used keys?

Besides the smaller stores in windsor and Toronto like songbird music etc.

I've found the web to be just the place however, to find stuff second hand

as far as groups and who has advantages/disadvantages yes race does
matter..that's all i was saying before..someone had said how he had hung out
w/ all these different kinds of people and how they all got along and
everything was groovy and i had to challenge that..that's all..i find it
_especially_ frustrating in light of recent events here in the US and here
at
umich (i live in ann arbor currently)..affirmative action rollbacks are have
a
_drastic_ effect on african american communities (look at college enrollment
levels in california before and after the affirmative action laws were
rolled
back)and now we have the umich law school case..i can't even begin to
describe
what a horrible impact this case would have if it doesn't eventually get
turned over..these mindsets _frighten_ me..they _depress__ me and they leave
me _outraged_ when someone tries to assert such naive statements as skin
color doesn't matter..and if you grew up around detroit you _know_..you
must
have been downtown at some point when race relations were very tense...

RE: [313] Question for the day/coincedence

2001-03-15 Thread Ryan Brogan
This thread is strangely coinciding with the discussion at axisrecords.com
As far as those records. They are quite playable, that's why they're
available on vinyl. If anything, the more melodic and less-drum-machine
heavy sequences might be lurking in the background, underneath Dan's beloved
handclaps. :)

well i am sure he won't play old school hip hop and booty bass for 3 hours.
however i don't think he'll rock any of his dog stuff. who needs those
tracks when he has all that talent with the 909 i love those hand claps.

When Jeff Mills comes to Perth next month, what do you suppose the odds
are that he plays anything from Every Dog has it's day Pts 1 or 2?

As a dj, the man is amazing, but I'm wondering if it will be the same
rabbit and the same hat.

help. 313 sound companies

2001-03-15 Thread Ryan Brogan
I am looking for contact information on sound companies in/around 313 or
those who would travel to 313. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone knows info for Badger Audio, that would be appreciated as well.

Respect,

Ryan

RE: [313] Synths Keyboards

2001-03-06 Thread Ryan Brogan

How about the analogue heaven archives for this? You can also search one of
a thousand synth sites for reviews or to see other peoples kit lists.

p.s. Get an mc-303. ;)

What do you want the board to sound like? what kind of sounds do you want
out of it and what kind of music do you want to make with it (as if I don't
know)?

Firstly sorry to anyone who this may offend, coz I
know there was a post a few months (please don't cry
as I can't seem to find the mails).

Anyway lets cut the crap.

I am after a synth but I am unsure what to buy. I
want to get it right as I will be spending a lot of
money, so I would appreciate any advice you peepz
could give me.

Reply privately as not to waste peoples time if you
like.

Thanks

RE: [313] Tha Mills thang

2001-02-27 Thread Ryan Brogan
I thought hpdj didn't play office parties in the US anymore.

I remember the old days in the coffee room behind hp dj's cubicle. That
place was a sweatbox by 9 am.
hpdj used to bang it all day long, except when someone used him to write
faxes or check emails etc.

There was this one time, however, that hp dj got a Melissa-virus and started
playing backwards goa- trance and mixing it with various factory windows
sounds, that was a wild one..

Now everyone just gets high in the office, plays with glow-sticks and
listens to the copier..

didn't you hear?

they fired mills.. instead it's gonna be a 6 hour wizard set by the
hpDJ.

enjoy!

I'm probably going to come in for the Wizard show, but before I click
on
  Buy in Expedia ...

First things first, are there any tickets left?

I can either arrive late Thursday afternoon and stay until Sunday
evening,
or else arrive early Thursday morning on a late Wednesday night red-eye
and
ship back out Friday evening. I'd save $109 if I stayed until Sunday,
but
that would obviously be negated if I had to stay at a hotel for 2 extra
nights.

If any of my peeps in Detroit that know me want me to stick around for
the
weekend, plz 2 speak up in the next 6 or 7 hours :-)

RE: [313] DEMF

2001-02-16 Thread Ryan Brogan
That is ridiculous. The work being done is on the lower level by the rink.
The will be replacing tons of tile. The work will be completed long in
advance and will not interfere whatsoever with the DEMF. Trust me on this
one.

I have just heard some interesting information about the DEMF:

Hart Plaza will be unusable due to extensive construction projects.
The entire festival has been moved to Belle Isle, a family park island about
2 miles east of HartPlaza, accessable only by one 2 lane bridge. Things
will not be the same as last year.

I'll post more information as I get updates/confirmation

After sending my last e-mail, maybe I should explain myself better.
I don't know anything about the promoters of this and I wasn't casting
aspersions on them. I just know that Mills is at best ambivalent about
appearing in the US, and that his manager simply won't entertain the idea
at all ...
