[313] Re [313]: Metropolis @ Royal Festival Hall

2002-05-02 Thread Simon Pascoe

Hi,

got to agree it was a brilliant night. It was great to hear the Metropolis
soundtrack in context, and just to see the film for the first time - very
impressive for a 1926 vintage film, definitely ahead of it's time. It was
good to see all of the usual UK 313 suspects (hi Nick, Alice, Anya ) and a
lot of the familiar UK techno faces getting down to Jeff's set at the end of
the night. If you get the chance to see Metropolis I'd recommend it.

It was a very strange experience seeing it all go off at the Royal Festival
Hall - the only other time I've been there was when I went to see Placido
Domingo with my Mum (don't laugh ;-), I don't remember there being any stage
diving and people jumping off of balconies on that occasion - and there was
definitely no funk. In fact I don't even remember anyone dancing either.

That was pretty damn good for a school night.

Just a quick report on Jeff Mills / Metropolis at the Festival Hall in
London last night

Although Si Begg was orignally on the line-up it looks like he was replaced
by Matthew Herbert, giving it some crazy Radioboy stylings... this was
fairly quality as matthew herbert proceeded to sample/loop crazy sounds
from tearing up gap boxer shorts to chucking cornfalkes around to throwing
McD's burgers in a wheelie-bin !

This was followed by a healthy yet equally crazy set from super-collider.
Never seen them live before but it was quite cool to seem them pulling off
some cool visual effects using projectors and a variety of props while
knocking out quality beats :)

Jeff Mills came on after super collider to introduce the metropolis
screening, and then played a quality set when the film finished. The
festival hall was going fairly mental at this point - loads of people
dancing on seats / rushing the stage / generally going for it :)

overall a top event - tho will be interesting if the RFH agree to do
something like this again ;)

The month after is Lost's 10th birthday with Jeff Mills on August 25th.

Was that the 313 night at Public Life, or did I miss something else ? If so,
I will try and make it there first.

I'm going with Dan Butler and Gary Robinson who are also on the list (in
addition to a few friends), and I hope to meet up with Anya there as well.

The one thing I found with the Lost venue is that you need to be towards the
front to get good sound quality, but then I want to be able to see Derrick
and Francois do their thang anyway. :-)

Re: [313] track ID's Ron Hardy Mix

2001-01-11 Thread Simon Pascoe

Hi,

I'll have a stab at two of these from your description (because I have no
way of listening to audio at work);

track 5: Trax-style all the way, female singing: "Fall down on me, I need
you, I need you,etc"

If it's an almost gospel-like vocal style with a stabby lead synth, then I
think the artist name is Tremaine and the track is called "Spirit of Love".

track 6: Trax-style, male singing: "Can't you see, everybody is dancing
with me...Music takes control, music that's good for your soul..."

From the lyrics, I think this is "Let the Music Use you" by the
Nightwriters, I think it was on Trax, I'm sure somebody else on the list
will know waaay better than me though ;-)

Hope this helps, good luck with the others,

sImon

Re: [313] urban tribe...

2000-06-15 Thread Simon Pascoe

Hi,

I have to agree with the comments about the Urban Tribe album (prior to the
recent mailstorm). I have to confess that I never gave it the full attention
it deserved when I first bought it (hangs head in shame), but the more I've
listened to it over time, the more I've come to appreciate it and feel quite
how deep it really goes. Definitely one of my favourite purchases last year
that's never far from the stereo.

Also I recently bought a compilation (Freezone 3) that features Claude
Young's Multiplicity Of Zeros and Ones. I am completely in awe of this
track, and feel that I must have been hiding under a stone some place to
have overlooked it ! I was already impressed at what an impressive DJ, and
really personable guy he is, but the fact he can he can make electronic soul
like this is breathtaking. Any hints as to what else I should be looking out
for from Claude would be really appreciated.

I'm still learning, thanks 313. :-)

Yeah, just do it - you really can't go wrong if you have any kind of
love for electronic arts, full-stop.
The line-up is bound to be superb, with a lot of local talent in addition
to more well known acts.
The city is of course a beautiful setting.
Best memory of last year - grooving away at 8am on the beach
terrace beneath the morning sun to Angel Molina's deep house set
with a 1000 happy people lost in music (Buena Vida, indeed!).
Juanjo (who is hiding somewhere on the list!) will probably know
more about this year's line-up.
