I found this Soundcloud page with some interesting electro, which had a
Bandcamp release. It sounds a lot like something Gerald Donald might be
part of... Maybe not but I just wondered if anyone knew more about it?

It's pretty good anyway. It appeared to be released yesterday.

Re: 313 Digest 20 Mar 2015 05:02:50 -0000 Issue 4279

2015-03-20 Thread Steve Robertson
I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise to me, but I didn't know. That
makes some sense though. It seems almost impossible for most people to
make money making music these days.

It would have been great to be a producer during the 90's. I bought a
lot of vinyl then too.

It's remarkable how limited a lot of electro vinyl releases would seem
to be currently. It looks like releases of just 100-250 records for even
the most well known artists. Good releases have some rarity, yet demand
is not what it was either.

Commons music and remix projects

2015-03-19 Thread Steve Robertson
I am inspired mostly by a period in electronic music between 1990 and
2001. I am deeply interested in Detroit electro techno music,
especially Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Drexciya, DJ K-1, Aux 88,
as well as great British artists such as Neil Landstrumm and Aphex Twin,
among many others. I started to make music a couple of years ago and I
reached a point where I now feel as much lost as I feel I found my sound
(I'm still at a loss to know what exactly my next track will be).

I posted all what I have to share on my Soundcloud page
(https://soundcloud.com/kerr-knoll) with 24-bit audio (44.1 kHz)
downloads and an explicit creative commons license, to mix share
non-commercially. Music to be shared freely. I'll be making completely
new tracks in the future. All of these are free and I am comfortable
with that.

I'd go further and offer commercial rights to remix projects. The
details of that would need to be discussed but in principle I would
welcome commercial remixes that were authorised by me and I would not
expect a share of royalties. I've no idea if that sort of arrangement
exists already, but folk in the business should be able to figure it out
if there's an interest. As well as the downloads available on Soundcloud
I can provide additional assets on request.

Please share with anyone that might be interested in either the tracks
or the remix opportunity.

Thanks

Steve

2014-01-31 Thread Steve Robertson
I've set up a Discourse site in the hope that you may find it interesting
or otherwise simply for my own personal curiosity. It's been a bit quiet
around here and if Facebook is now where the conversations are then I'm
also missing out. Maybe I've never found a better forum for music than the
313 list, but my personal interest is more generally underground electronic
music, and UR as an inspiration.

https://disco.k-os.net/ (Discourse @ K-os.net)

Feel free to post your SoundCloud things there (it has support for
embedding players too), if you want to (anything goes). I'll keep the site
up if there's enough interest to keep it going.

It's all set-up with email integration and good security for passwords etc,
but also allowing folk to use Twitter or Google, or even Yahoo for
authentication, and Facebook if I can get that to work. Currently Facebook
login is disabled.

This sits on it's own virtual dedicated server, supports mobile browsers
and things. Worth evaluating if you are interested in that sort of thing.
I'd help out if there's interest in setting something up specifically for
313.

I've followed the list for a lot more time than I've been making music.
It's an origin of some music I am very interested in. If it were just about

I wouldn't be following it. My feeling is that this is a list with respect
to those roots. People of Detroit have a privilege in having a strong
localised and unique music history. I read the Techno Rebels book. I
appreciate that there is a lot of house music and soulful music enthusiasts

(313) Orbiter EP + more music

2013-12-16 Thread Steve
Hello

A little earlier in the year I made this 3-track EP with mastering by
someone recommended by a friend. I think there's some analog gear there
which I like. I was holding out in case I could get it released on a label
but I'm sharing it for free on my SoundCloud page now. It's my best work
and I've got some other interesting things in the pipeline. I like making
music but I don't think I could do it all the time or business-like. Feel
free to share.

https://soundcloud.com/kerr-knoll/sets/orbiter-ep

If it's not there right now (as has happened before) then it's just rolling
out via the SoundCloud content-delivery-network so please try again later.

I've made all my music on SoundCloud available to download as CD-quality
44.1kHz 16-bit .wav files. Couldn't settle for either FLAC or ALAC (and mp3
just unsuitable for transcoding).

Two tracks from my recent mix, Aquatic Experiments and Moon Base also
uploaded today.

Cheers

Steve

Free the Weed!

Just had a quick look. It's certainly nothing new and you're point about
recording it is clear. Reminds me also of a comment regarding the Napster
subscription. With that it was/is possible to take a subscription for a
month and extract all the music using some sort of script following the
stream all to playlist (after several days of course).

Besides, the biggest disappointment about the idea is it's a windows exe
installer so a definite non-starter IMHO.

if you get to hear the track for free three times, you could cheat by
recording, to say, a stand alone cd recorder through the analogue input
whilst you're auditioning the track.
of course the use of d/a a/d converters would reduce sound quality a
miniscule amount, but you wouldn't be able to tell.

I remember the first time I went to Fabric being really impressed with it,
that was probably around 2yrs ago now. Stacy Pullen and Dave Angel were

The management really let it go a bit. It's ok if you get into the VIP area

great aspirations. Running the joint for profit was a challenge and there's
a lot of people involved all wanting their slice of cake.

That was the first time I ever had fear of setting
foot on a dance floor. People were wall to wall, and
it looked like some depiction of purgatory. The room
was painted black with a ceiling maybe three stories
tall. A strobe from the ceiling was pretty much the
only light, and he'd cut that off every so often
sending the whole place into darkness. When the bass
hit it blew your hair back. In the DJ booth he was
bathed in red light, with a Sisters of Mercy poster
behind him. One interesting moment was when a CD
started skipping creating a Kid606 effect, then
followed by the system emitting a horrible tone. The
crowd went nuts, while Richie looked a little less
than thrilled.

Sean,

So to not confuse .cda is an indexing configuration file, note they always
have a file weight of less then 1k = no audio content. Big companies do
this to hide the wave files, makes copying commercial audio CDs not so easy
with proper software. You won't need to worry about this, follow Kevin's
directions to handle the conversion from MP3 to Wave and then jump into
Adaptec easy CD 4.0+ or Nero as Dennis suggests to rip the CD.

.cda is the file-extension for a cd playable wave file.

Most Audio CD burning software will create a CD from .mp3 though. I know
for a fact that Adaptec easy CD 4.0+ and Nero both do.

If you need help finding these programs shoot me a mail.

Off topic but I thought I'd ask the masters:
i want to convert a file from MP3 format and burn it onto an audio CD that
will play in a standard CD player (home, car ect) . what format do I need
to
make the file in order for it to be read and played back by a CD player?

Holy crap, you've produced 33 cd's worth of music in three years?!
I've spent the last 6 months on one track!

I think we should sack the offices of Urb,
burning and pillaging all before us.

I think before yelling at the magazine and leading
 an
uprising it might be wise to calmly contact the
editors and find out the deal. It could be a number
 of
factors like the _writer_ didn't identify Alan when
submitting the picts as part of the caption, or
editorial or a number of possibilities. I don't
 think
it has much with detroit getting its due, if
anything most of these mags now have at least ONE
detroit feature, event review of record review per
issue. OR *gasp* perhaps Alan (with all due respect
 of
course) just didn't make that big of an impression
 on
the _writer_ that night-who knows. Detroit doesn't
need to be worshipped all the time and its not the
focus of every one's music world (i know..its hard
 to
concieve:)) that's not what it's about
 though...simmah
down now and think before you push send on that
 email to URB.

 all the best,

  One that was thrown in
LA at the Colessium. as i was reading through the
  article they talked about
just about every DJ that was there except for DJ
  T-1000. now obviously he
made a good impression on the promoter because it
was the second year in a

  the pictures that went

 the

  upon closer inspection,
sure enough she was there. Standing next to him
with her arms in the air
not even looking at the camera. can't even see
 her

she was checking him out. so whats up with this
  caption. i think this is
just another fine example of Detroit not getting
 the
  respect it deserves.
And i also think that it is a good showing of
 where
  the scene is going. too
bad its to trance. i am suggesting that everyone
 on
  this list contact URB
and tell them what a bunch of a$$holes they are.
  infact i am doing that
  now...

Re: [313] The Rhythm of Vision

2001-03-21 Thread steve teeri
It was originally released as a track called
Rhythm on his Minimal Nation album put out on
Axis, and re-released on Mplant a few months ago. I'd
try
for the Mplant one, the original is hard to find.

Keoki in Detroit

Anyone know where Keoki is going to be on the 24th of Nov.?? I know he's
coming here, I just don't know where. Thanks.

Trying....

2000-06-16 Thread Steve Hanlon
here's a question...

at what point has the music of one scene become so copied that the original
soul and unique spirit of those first pioneers become diluted with 1/2 arsed
knock-offs and misguided interpretations? simply put, how long doest take
for the bandwagon to run over the pioneers?

cybotron is seen as the foundation of the detroit sound. 10 years later the
sound had been refined and the banner picked up by a larger crowd. 10 more
years have pasted. what is left of the original voice?

i have been around in this scene for the better part of 10 years. i have
seen the rise of UK breakbeat and it's tranfiguration into the various drum
and bass camps. techno has gone from minimal concrete and steel to organic
and then full circle again and again, each time picking up more and more
bits of other influences.

i am certain that a large section of this mailing list would not enjoy
listening to the early techno records. they lack much of the movement that
exists today. a large portion of the listening audience has come to
techno thru the remains of the rave scene and the mega parties.

i have people tell me all the time that they love techno, but when i break
out some minimal techno stuff that ca. 1984, they look at me very confused.
if i play early electro, they seem to know what that is, but the early
techno is lost on them. to tell you honestly, the early techno takes some
serious patience to listen to until it clicks in your mind. it took a few
years for that to happen with me.

so all this talk of trance and techno seems rather pointless. if you must
confine your mind to a narrow defination of techno, then i feel sorry for
you and at the sametime i have no time for you. there are many great works
out there hiding on the b sides of many records filed under other banners
than techno.
