Regarding Content and Community

313 content is not moderated and never will be, therefore we rely on 313 list

you respect the following principles:

* Spam is strictly prohibited, 313 list subscribers are not marketing

* List members are here for a reason, keep your posts on topic, using 313
as a chat room is not permitted. Please note placing 'OT', standing for
off-topic, or 'NRR', standing for not really relevant, in the subject line in
no way excuses you from adhering to this rule.
* Do not attempt to steal another list subscribers email identity (and,
yes, this has happened).
* Do not repost private email to 313. Likewise do not reply to private
email and 'CC' 313. This is both illegal (falling under the reproduction of an
original copyrighted work without permission) and highly unethical. Arguments

3. I have the job of list administrator (not moderator) because no one else

Maybe it’s time you passed the baton over to someone else. It’s clear that this
list sometimes needs a small amount of moderation. You’re obviously not the
person to do this as you have repeatedly done nothing in the past and this list
has lost valuable contributors because of your lack of action.

There should be more than one moderator so it’s not just one person opinion
that shapes this list.

2. I have made 3 albums and several EPs and I generally don't bring them up

throughout.

She did apologize for how she reacted and people have continued to go after
her. As for the comment that "if she was a guy she would've been removed long
ago" I have to disagree. I love Tom Cox and I loved the heated debates he used
to get in. Him and I had a few as well. I never got so touchy that I thought
he should be removed from the list. Those threads and debates back then pushed
the envelope much farther than any of the emails I saw by her did. And in
reality, there have been more emails discussing this than there were that
caused this discussion to begin.

Her contribution to the music is undeniable and rather than just write her off
as being hostile, maybe everyone should take stock as to why and what pushed
her to become hostile in the first place.

Removing someone that has contributed as much to the musuc as she has would be
a shame.

Just my 2 cents. And Joe, I'm pretty sure Marcellus and Rick would agree with
me on this one. They love the voices of strong opinionated women in the scene
as much as I do.

There was alarm bells ringing through the whole story, Lil Louis excuses
are a bit thin , he'll lose the most from this as it's all over the web
now.

His Publicist needs to learn to stay out of forum debates. Even Marshall
Jefferson has jumped to the defense of his friend.

Even if the promoters were a bit naive, for him to take nearly €12,000 is
out of order. I can imagine promoters will think twice about booking him
after this episode. I'm sure it happens lots of times that artist don't
turn up and don't give the fee back. I've seen it happen here in Dublin.

they all cost a fortune to get hold of now….. anyway…
Here's a  2 hour mix of my currrent favourite DT, of which some emanates
from Berlin and some doesn't and some might be inspired Mr Von Oswald and
Mr

I enjoyed the Blue Potential. It carried an air of ridiculousness that
accompanies anything highbrow Mills does - the idea of an orchestra playing
some of his harder records was faintly surreal, and there is something a bit
daft in the idea that classical musicians interpreting techno music sort of
validates it which I often feel is the hidden agenda behind these sorts of
exercises, because ultimately classical music and orchestras are seen as the
high end of the spectrum, whilst some guy pressing buttons on a drab grey
box is seen as the opposite end.

Funnily enough, The Bells was the most enjoyable interpretation
alongside The March.

For me it was definitely Gamma Player the highlight track of Blue
Potential. The real strings add much to it.

of course I was trolling, but the meat of my troll was heartfelt, in that I
think its an insult to even ask a classical musician to cover something as
simplistic as 4/4 16-step quantized techno. I produced electronic music for

almost 15 years, so I have less of a hate for techno than a respect for
people that can do true humanized composition across a myriad of real
instruments.

the point was to entertain my self while waking this list up. I could have
trolled in on a subject that never would have spawned a working thread.

 1. /0 as per usual, was trolling. Acquiring the Urine, as it were.

 2. The Alarms WIll Sound CD had some awesome moments. It transmuted
the patience Richard James put into hours and hours of step
programming into real-time instrumental virtuosity. It isn't better
or worse than the original, it's different, in an interesting (and
 very enjoyable) way.

 3. I haven't heard the Blue Potential thing, except for snippets, and
the snippets didn't make me want to seek it out. As a former
orchestral musician, my feeling is that orchestras are really good at
playing notes, and playing music from the domain in which the players
are trained. If the conductor is decent, and the back half of every
section isn't there just to collect a paycheck, magic can happen.
Said magic rarely happens when the music on the stands comes from a
musical domain completely foreign to the musicians.

This isn't limited to things like Techno-Orchestral works. I've heard
performances of Webern and Alban Berg that were just awful, because
most of the orchestra -- and sometimes the conductor as well -- just
can't get into it. Nothing is worse than an orchestra playing a piece
most of the players hate. You feel the hate coming through.

I can't speak to the concept behind the Blue Potential project, nor to
the way audiences might feel about the notion of validation for these
 projects in general.

But I worked on the Alarm Will Sound/Aphex Twin thing, and our only
motivation there was that we just loved the music and wanted to hear
what it would sound like played by acoustic instruments. There was
certainly no sinister marketing angle or highbrow/lowbrow thinking -
that's for cultural theorists and hipster bloggers, not musicians.

RE: (313) more mixer votes

2007-11-06 Thread The Archiver
I'm a little late with this debate, but I have a Xone 32 and its great, I
have it for 4 years now, and it still works perfectly, the gains on the back
of it really don’t cause any problems, they're easy to use once you know
where they are. I don’t think it suitable for quick chopping between tracks
as the cross fader response is a little slow. It's a solid mixer and have
had no complaints with it.

The only disadvantage of a cheap mixer is that it doesn’t last as long as
the more expensive mixers, the more expensive mixers are generally better
built, the same applies for decks as well.

Hah,

I just buy cheap used mixers or spend around $120 for
a cheapie 2 channel.

Inexpensive is realitive I guess, because $500 is a
lot of money for me. That is why I use Stanton
turntables as well...at least they aren't belt drive.

RE: (313) REMINDER: 313 list accepts only plain text messages

2007-10-10 Thread The Archiver
This is A Techno list, let's not embrace the new technology!

In response to Kent's reasons

 1. MIME-encoding makes the archives and digests unreadable and difficult
to search.

Really? How? Is this a bit of a broad statement?

 2. Some peple still use text-based e-mail programs.

I would assume there are very few? There aren’t many email programs out
there that only use Plain Text,

 3. We old school.
Kent you may be OLD school, but that's hardly a reason to keep everyone in
the category.

Kent you may be the moderator, but is the decision yours to decide what the
list should do? I mean no disrespect here

If we was truly old school, I wouldn't see this in the Digests:

Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

(just look at all those =20 quoted-printable spaces.)

While I'm not sure this is necessarily the exact/only cause,
quite a few Digests still continue to cause Apple's Mail.app
heartburn. There were 13 of them in the latest Digest that I
just got earlier this morning (and a few 8bit as well).

If we really want Plain Text, it's all about

Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

baby!

Rather than respond individually to the 3 or 4 people who recently had

to select 'plain text' as the message type in your mail client. Not

It's not really a podcast it's a flash mp3 player.

Its pretty easy to download the files, if you know how to!

Maybe Submerge can post the links.

The Ron Murphy show is pretty cool!!!

A very cool initiative but tell me, how to I get this podcast on my iPod?
I don't see any RSS feeds containing links to the mp3s.

Looks like we're going to be getting a few artists in town off the back of
DEMF, Mark Broom being one of them.
So, how is he? I love his records but, as we're all aware, that doesn't
always translate to being a good DJ.
Should I expect loops or something a little more?
