http://www.urbandictionary.com/ defines live as: Jumping, full of people, exciting. Something was very enjoyable. For example, Kevin Reynolds' set last night was live. You could also say it was all the way live. m50 At 2009.04.16 12:08, Arturo Lopez wrote: This is not a snarky question, I'm just curious what that actually means in these modern times of ableton live? As always it matters what you do with what you have in front of you, but it might be a very arbitrary term sooner rather than later. I'm not nearly as old school as most of you but I do remember when live meant you had a rack of gear in front of you and you were piecing together/reshaping music on the fly. I'm not getting into the argument about the regular vinyl DJ creating music, I believe that, too, but you don't see live next to a traditional vinyl set, and I get the feeling some of the new live stuff isn't very far from it, just mp3 tracks with a little laptop FX help. Re: (313) Pioneer, Technics, Pacemaker, Laptop ?
Well, in either case: all manufacturers aren't going to include docking stations in all of their products as it'll increase the basic costs for users who might not need those features (many mixers don't have XLR outputs, some don't have 1/4 mono pairs, etc). The type of device you're looking for for occasionally incorporating an mp3 into a set would be a pretty different requirement from one you would be using on a regular basis. And finally, more and more often scratch amps, etc, are getting broader use, so if you're into that sort of thing there are more and more instances where they will already be provided and hooked up, so that you can just bring your computer, or maybe even just your hard drive. Depends on where and with whom you perform, of course. your mileage may vary. m50 At 2009.01.21 14:19, Benoît Pueyo wrote: Pacemaker and ipod DJing will soon show their limitations to you; they're quite toylike gadgets and not at all robust; I understand (for a gig use), however to me these devices are not more fragile than a laptop. I'll put in a vote for Traktor Scratch Pro; Well you know there are some parties you dont have time un plug decks, plus scratch amp and replug everything onto the mixer. If you headline some big gig, the promoter will care of that before. But small and/or private parties are not like that. Sometimes you just arrive and have to play just after the previous dj. Good solution 2 : why most standard club mixers (i mean very expansive) dont have a soundcard allowing to control traktor vith cd/vinyl just by plugging a laptop on them (i think xone 3d does that) ? At the moment no perfect solution. -- Benoît.

Re: (313) Morgan Geist interview
Listening to music isn't an event anymore unless it's live. No one sits down and just listens. I think entertaining yourself on the go is turning into a huge problem. It's like yogurt tubes versus nice Greek yogurt with honey drizzled on it. -Morgan Geist By my reading of this, he's not saying that he thinks it's best for people to hear his music live. Instead, he sounds to me like he's bemoaning the modern audience's unwillingness or inability to experience listening to recorded music as an event in itself. I'm guessing that when you say that he hasn't dropped a record in 11 years, you are only counting solo full length albums (or CDs?) as a record. By my count, he's been pretty busy releasing music regularly over the past decade, solo, under pseudonyms, and as a part of various groups. Meaningful live representation seems like something that electronic music in particular has struggled with since it started being created. How does one reproduce a field recording, live, or a multitrack recording of painstakingly edited bits, or tape splicing on the fly. Sure, there are ways of representing any of these in a live setting, I suppose, but it is not the same thing as a band playing something together as a band in the studio and then together as a band on stage. It sounds like he wants to focus on creating and capturing his studio work, and he isn't finding the buyers or listeners he was hoping for. He's also begging the question as to whether the type of audience he hopes for even exists. m50 At 2008.09.26 12:00, kate simko wrote: You know, as much as I absolutely love Morgan Geist's music and respect him as an artist, I don't see him as a total victim in his anxiety stroll. A mutual friend of ours in Chicago told me about how he just wants to record music (not play shows) and how he's considering quitting music (same rant as the interview). Well, he says in his interview that Listening to music isn't an event anymore unless it's live. But he's not willing to play live. So, he thinks it's best for people to hear his music live (where they have to pay for the show!!) but he's not willing to give them that opportunity. The whole history of music up until the 20th century was based off of musicians playing for an audience. Only since the advent of recordings was selling a copy of a performance even and option. Ask any successful band or DJ and they will tell you that playing shows is the only viable option for supporting yourself off music right now. I don't think this is totally a bad thing. It should be an honor to play for people who enjoy your music (like Morgan says, he feels lucky that people pay attention to his music). Anyways, my point is Morgan Geist hasn't dropped a record in 11 years and doesn't want to play live- that's the root of his predicament. He has a great new record and *it's up to him* to make more music and play shows to get by financially. Or, as the original post said, take a break. He's a talented, blessed guy, I'm sorry to hear him sound so unhappy. On Sep 26, 2008, at 9:26 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Reason it's not a business is because his fans won't let him make a living at it. MEK Martin Dust [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 09/26/2008 05:03:50 AM: Oh yeah. I agree. Don't get me wrong, the honesty in there is refreshing. Re: (313) Richie Hawtin's Traktor setup
I have to admit, he comes across as charismatic (and energetic!) in this clip, so I can see that appeal. It is an interesting explanation and for folks curious about what he's up to and how he does it, it seems illuminating. That said, he does have a sometimes overstated approach; he tends to claim every new gadget is revolutionary, and this presentation / advertisement style seems to gain him some fans and detractors, more than the technology itself. Then again, the overstatement could just be that he's an excitable fellow ^^ I've seen similar tutorial videos from Christopher Willits (XLR8R) and Robert Henke (I don't remember who presented it but I believe it was a seminar in NZ) where they explain what, to me, seemed significantly more nuanced and complicated, yet both of these fellows explain in understated way. Maybe an apples-and-oranges comparison, though, since these latter two explanations were on production / live performance techniques vs DJing. As usual, thanks for sharing the video, Martin. m At 06:52 2008.09.05, /0 wrote: interesting, but I couldn't help but think, over and over, wow, this has been done for at least 5 years, by people with a lot less of a reputation for pushing the envelope than you. oh well, he does his thing and does it well - Original Message - From: Martin Dust [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 Mailing List 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, September 05, 2008 7:18 AM Subject: (313) Richie Hawtin's Traktor setup Interesting little video: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6n4cy_richie-hawtin-traktor-setup_music m

(313) Fwd: [Techhouse] choice or dilution?
Raises a good point: that this phenomenon might not be genre- or scene-specific. m50 Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2008 13:24:14 -0400 From: Adam Grealish [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Techhouse] choice or dilution? the thought occurred to me a few days ago when i was looking at the lineup for bonaroo. traditionally a hippie jam band festival, the lineup this year supplement the expected fair with hipster indie rock bands and other acts just slightly below the level of full-on pop. This seems to be a trend. DEMF is a prime example. the organizers were losing their shirts throwing the festival. so to increase attendance the focus changed from a detroit-music festival to a music festival in detroit. there are two main points to this (1) hey, its more choices. more options are always good. plus, if it is the only way the festival can subsist than expanding the musical offerings in a good thing. (2) but wait. adding all these other acts dilutes the spirit of the event. the festival is turned from a focused study of one type of music among many like-minded people to hodge-podge of acts from the musical flavor of the month. the festival is no longer unique. It is just another music festival in a different city. And in such a case is it worth denigrating the integrity of the festival in order to keep it alive? i feel like a crotchety old man saying that i dont like all this new stuff while longing for the better-days of the past but i cant help but think that good music festivals are losing their souls. Re: (313) Happy New Year y'all
While we're on the consumer feedback tangent, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who weighed in on their favorite portable recorders. I picked up a Zoom H2 and found that while it has a wide variety of interesting features, the line input for it is not adjustable (although there's an adjustment to turn down the recording level after it's already entered, as well as normalization / compression features, etc) and so had a tendency to distort. I've traded it in for the somewhat more pricey Edirol R-09 which I've been pretty happy with so far. I purchased via http://www.minidisco.com/ which I also recommend. We can recognize the entire tune based on those few seconds and it means something to us. Reminds me of the old game show Name that Tune where people got down to minuscule fragments of songs and could name the titles (granted quite a number were crazy wild guesses). Again .. I am trying to open doors and suggest new ways to make music, to extend its possibilities. the possibilities were already endless, which is why i think trying to extend them is a silly idea. Why should Dj's replace bands? they don't have to, but i am not interested in them so much. i like live music that functions deep in the groove, im not into rockin guitar solos and dramatic stage presence or whatever. so so so very few live performers can do that for me (fat freddy's drop is a standout from recent years where the egos were all subjugated to the groove!) What was wrong with classical music? the typical performance! sitting around stodgy theatres in a suit, politely clapping, or maybe even worse when string quartets are hired to play background music at functions where people just dont give a sh*t. plus the attitudes of many classical fans is obnoxious. im definitely very interested in more modern minimal composition and avant garde stuff where they get rid of all that nonsense, but those people dont get much love in the classical music realm anyway! theyre more like techno than 99% of techno artists are without even trying. Thinking that the Dj is the ultimate solution to the performance paradigm is getting pretty narrow. do you think so? i dont. the deejay is limited only by his collection of records. how many musicians can memorize the literally tens of thousands of songs that any given deejay has to choose from? almost none! how many can be masters of any genre or style that a deejay with great knowledge can be? almost none. the deejay has a very unique position and skill set that can harness the best musicians of all time and every genre ever and any song as it could best be performed and use it to shape mood, atmosphere, etc. You seem to be clamping down firmly again on your view of reality being the only right and correct way for things to happen. i mean, people are free to do whatever they please. but the results of people simply trying to do something new have been garbage, by far. it is a useless pursuit that has led to so many terrible records and almost no awesome records that i am surprised that anyone thinks it is a good idea. good music is revolutionary, everything else is just hype/intellectual crap slapped on by critics and other people observing it. There is nothing new under the sun. There is nothing new under the sun. I'm just not buying it. I have suggested several ways to do things differently and because they are not fitting into your description of what IS then they become impossible, irrelevant or simply dismissed. i mean, my definition of music is the loosest possible definition: an artistic arrangement of sounds and rhythms. i didnt say that artists have to put themselves in their music, thats just the way it is! these things dont come from nowhere. i mean, you can go on believing that great music will just come from the netherworld through your new ideas but ill stick with reality. I have not mentioned sensors or computer once .. or any form of automation. then what else is there? if a person is involved, they have input. end of story. you cannot remove that person from the equation. if you do, you have nothing! What if an artist set up the sensor? How do you start to differentiate between where the composition of music starts and finishes? brian eno has been dealing with this idea

I'm betting there's an obvious answer, but perhaps it bears mentioning? m50 Well, I can definitely say that it's easy to confuse people by being too eclectic, whenever I throw something in a set that's a little bitting surprising and outside of the overall sound there are some people who specifically will mention that they liked everything but that one particular cut. Why is this the case? I don't know, but it seems to be particular to electronic music and the way its consumed, because in the broader audience, I notice that eclecticism tends to go over fairly well. That difference between the way the initiated and the uninitiated experience electronic music is definitely a big factor. Interesting too that some DJ sets go over equally well with each, and some do not; it's not an either / or proposition. m50

On payday I bought the '28 After' and 'Devil In Dub' (you can check out the tracks at http://www.lorecordings.com) and I've had trouble listening to anything else. It's yet another take on Italo-disco, but is a uniquely messed up version of the genre. Every track seems to throw every possible squelchy/silly/Dr.Who analog synth sound into the mix, along with what sounds like malfunctioning vocoders, helium falsetto vocals, Moroder 16th note bounce basslines and skeletal disco beats. All without hitting the dreaded wall of cheese that makes buying Italo records hazardous. 'Devil In Dub' applies classic King-Tubby style Echo+Mute dub technique to strip down and further weirdify the already darkly weird originals. Like I said, I like this a whole lot more than some people, so since Lo lets you hear the whole tracks, check it out. Eevolute's web label Eevo-Next has been a favorite of mine, to the point where I've bought the entire downloadable catalog. My latest purchase is Terrace's City Sounds EP, which has more than a few nods in the direction of Italo, but just as many towards Detroit. Solid beats and basslines, topped with swirling sad pads. It seems like Stefan Robbers' style hasn't evolved that much in the past 15 years, but for me that's not a bad thing. Instead of following the latest fads, he's stuck to his guns and evolved his compositional skills instead. It's as though each of the tracks on this CD could have been made in 1993 in terms of the superficial details of the sound and beats; but it's not as though the intervening years haven't happened. These are deep tracks, artfully arranged.

Re: (313) Tunes
I'll bite... Recent acquisitions: Gys - Lon (Zer0 G) Very nice, smooth, spacious dubby techno w/remixes. Dub Kult / Artificial Latvamaki split (Curle) Weirdness, but memorable. Big distorted rock-out techno on the Art Latv side, trippy minimal with an almost taunting female chant on the other. Jimi Polar - Monster Park (Future Classic) I somehow like it when people do things that I hate in a way that proves me wrong. This is one of those: the Robert Babicz squelchy acid bass is overdone to death in club stuff right now, but he builds a beautifully developing remix around it and so it works. The original is smoother and friendlier. Is this guy Australian? ADJ - Dope 'Ead On A Moped EP Ridiculously crunchy, mean electro. Brazilian Girls - Last Call (Verve Forecast) (You're going to laugh, but...) The C2 mix on this is some really clean funk. Convextion - s/t (Down Low) It lives up to the hype. m50 At 10:53 2007/3/7, you wrote: Anyone else? robin... My most recent purchases: Shuya Okino - United Legends Two (Especial) http://www.discogs.com/release/922514 Full on and really gorgeous vocal house w/singing duties going to Josh Milan, Diviniti, Nicky Guiland, Courtney Dennie, and Vikter Duplaix. Remixes by Phil Asher, Seiji, DJ Kawasaki, Da Lata, and Mark de Clive-Lowe. Bought it in preparation for summer. A great EP for the Body Soul and Co-Op floors. I really like the Phil Asher and DJ Kawasaki remixes. Mark de Clive-Lowe's is downtempo track that just aches. I have to find a copy of United Legends One now. That one sold out fast. Dimensions6 - Living In The Sunshine (Arision) http://www.discogs.com/release/238150 Broken beats that have a nice balance of techy tweaky electronics and more straight forward house. The original has a nice disco bassline. Âme's mixes bring in the circuitry - the main mix is uptempo and the dub is more mid to downtempo. The second track on side two is perfect for building mood - full of ambient nature jungle sounds (birds, crickets, dubby effects), a constant kick drum thump, female vocal chants, a stripped down lead keyboard, and just a bit of building percussion. Daz-I-Kue - Rokstone (Soon Come) (Bittasweet) http://www.discogs.com/release/462945 A broken beat classic. Red Astaire on vocals, really nice samba style percussion, beautiful string arrangement, and a sinking bassline to move da butt. The Boulder Dub is toughened up but still retains elegance. The Bugz remix is typical Bugz goodness and there's an accapella track too. More accapellas please! Bellcrash - Full Of Music (Sunshine Enterprise) http://www.discogs.com/release/349814 Real dancefloor jazz breakbeats. Wicked stuff. Saxophones, B3 organs, bits of spoken word, and tons of energy. How anyone could stand still while this is playing is beyond me. Politik, The / I.N.T. - Dopeness Galore presents: The Timeless Interpretations II (Dopeness Galore) http://www.discogs.com/release/860403 All downtempo stuff. The Politik's (Bémbé Ségué Mark De Clive-Lowe) HIgh Priestess is jazzy flute led hip-hop/soul with layered samples of either wooden or shell windchimes in the background. It's another summery track just waiting for open windows and the stereo cranked. I.N.T.'s track is one of those perfect twilight tunes - hip-hop beat with a dubbed out trumpet and vocals just repeating What'cha gonna do? Gerardo Frisina - Saeta (Schema) http://www.discogs.com/release/186049 Ooooh, Latin Latin Latin - looped piano, clavé, shakers, hand drums all sound like they were recorded in a school gymnasium (which doesn't sound like it would work but it does), then breaks in the full drum rhythm. And it just continues on from there. The part two on the flip starts with everything kicking in earlier - and the piano loop is added onto by a lead piano. Hmmm, nice. Various - Cool, Calm Collective (4 Lux) http://www.discogs.com/release/280112 Usual 4 Lux stuff - broken beats, downtempo, one sort of tech-house tune that was the only dissappointment on an otherwise fine complilation. Another one in my attempt to fill in some releases of their discog. Cherie Mathieson / Cousin Cockroach - The Good Good 3 Sampler Vol. 2 (2000 Black) http://www.discogs.com/release/651657 It's 2000 Black - it's broken beat. Whaddya expect? Not a bad sampler. The Cousin Cockroach is basically a long DJ tool but a nice one. Cherie Mathieson's is the better track and includes both vocal and instrumental versions. These are some I'm waiting to get these from Rush Hour but they're being stupid with another list member's order that I went in on: New World Aquarium - Twenty (Delsin) Redshape - Alone on Mars? (Present Music) Paul's Machine - Visuals (Ourmachine Records) Also found a great deal of good used funk, soul jazz records lately - the Dells, Ramsey Lewis, and Johnny Guitar Watson to name just a few MEK
