HI!! yes it is happening... but this year me and John Santos are NOT involved. It is all Brian Gillespie this year. Re: [313] Marketing -FACE
a HUGE part of it that has been discussed by many underground artists and label people you know and major labels is, FACE for many years not many artsts marketed their music with FACE, look at alot of the famous people in this music now, they have FACE , people all know what they look like. this is just part of it I could go on about this but, I do know it can work both ways, I am simply saying it is true that this plays a part. --- Giles Dickerson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think a huge part of why the attempts to marklet house and techno on a large scale have failed is because there is no one singing (sure occasionally there is) but there's no one there dancing singing to make a video of, talking to the audience. Popular music has melodies that are easily remembered and have lyrics than be sung along to. I'm guessing thet's the huge appeal the house and techno are often missing. Hence the explosion of Everything but the girl. The grand reception of Bjorks dance vocals. Hip hop is as close as we've come the beats are as heavy and great but there someone there singing and talking and on an average human level, people can connect with that easily. - Giles D I G I T A S // B O S T O N -- Giles Dickerson Art Director 800 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02199 -- mobile 617 899 9635 office 617 369 8601 -- From: Peter Leidy Sent: Friday, March 1, 2002 1:32 PM To: laura gavoor Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject:Re: [313] The Great White Hype...was IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! First of all, this is one of the most thought-provoking threads I've read in a while (nit-picking over curse words aside)- I'm glad the opinions are being voiced and I'd like to hear more from those like Laura who have a lot of direct industry experience with these issues. firing off cannons. Recently while watching CNN, there was a news segment covering Elton John FLAMING the music industry for lowest common denominator marketing. He said that the good musicians and music were actively being passed over in favor of the rubbish msuic the industry was putting out...He Last night I saw a great PBS special that focused on this same problem of LCD marketing- but in the realm of Film-Making- its called The Monster that ate Hollywood. There are tons of interviews with industry analysts, journalists, producers and directors up on their site at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/hollywood/ I think these issues of Pop Culture, Global Economy, LCD Marketing, etc. are common across the various realms of Arts Entertainment similar things are happening in each field right now from an economic standpoint. In terms of dance music getting serious attention- I think the problem with house and techno is that there is not a good stereotype of techno producer to market to teenage kids. I think the Major Labels like to market stereotypes of Rebellious, Subversive, Cool, and more recently pop-conscious-satiric characters that middle-class suburban teens can relate to. The problem with house and techno is that when you look for stereotypes- you have the gay club scene, the middle to lower class minorities- but without the hip-hop egos and fashion, then also the computer and synth geeks, none of which are sexy or cool to todays teenagers. But when the London Rave scene appeared- here was something more marketable- white kids sneaking out at night, taking drugs, and partying to rave music, not to mention new marketable fashion trends to go along with it. And of course, once they found something marketable, they further bastardized the music into formulated candy-coated crap, just as they did with disco 25 years ago. PS- I'm not even going to bring up the race issue- a whole other can of worms- but I agree that the race card is not over-used- it is still a serious problem with deep roots in the social and political policies that govern our country. People need to be aware of this especially as it becomes more subtle and disguised by other issues. -p - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] = Nancy Mitchell Artist Management and Promotions FORM,Inc. I can honestly say he is not a greedy bastard ... he does not play because of the $$ issue. maybe you touched on the truth a little bit about promoters and such (not the money part) but .. Having said that, I think there's plenty of promoters and venues in the states that he wouldn't have those kinds of problems with. CLAUDE GLASGOW
TRUE PEOPLE @ Sub Club @ Substitute Venue, Planet Peach, 34 Queen Street, Glasgow Monthly Fridays11pm - 3am £tbc Detroit techno legend CLAUDE YOUNG has arrived in town! Rumours have been circulating wildly in Glasgow these last few weeks we can now reveal that Claude will be starting his first ever UK residency at the infamous Sub Club in the form of his own night, TRUE PEOPLE, which launches on FRIDAY 11TH MAY. True People aims to be an exclusive monthly party which will adopt an open music policy, where people will have access to a wider spectrum of music than they would normally hear at other techno based nights. Claude will be djing a 4 hour killer set at each party, and there will be no booking of big name dj¹s to attract the crowd here this is a strictly family affair if guests do appear, they will be friends of Claudes who are playing at the club for the party vibe. (bets are on now to start guessing who his circle of friends are.!) Claude is one of the 2nd wave of techno producers/dj¹s to emerge from Detroit in the early 90¹s. He is enjoying worldwide recognition as one of the finest dj¹s on the scene and is renowned for his acrobatic style of djing, which he has described as ³hip hop djing with techno records². He travels the globe almost every weekend, playing to packed clubs in places like Spain, US Tokyo on a regular basis. With his recent album ³Patterns² on Djax gaining critical acclaim, running his own label Deta Recordings setting up his new website, Claude Young is big news as he becomes the first of Detroit¹s influential techno figures to set up a club night in Glasgow True People will be what the name suggests, a night for people who believe in the music, and not just the scene that revolves around it. Re: [313] re: Derrick May questions?-black history month
So ...I was at a small gathering last night of industry people that came to hear about Black Music: Past , Present Future with Jimmy Starks Hal Jackson speaking. Of course I would go!!! who would not want to hear these two HISTORICAL men speak about this music their amazing lives. Some of the things you are talking about were covered during QA at the end. Something I have always wondered, is why Does detroit techno ( a black music) always get over looked as such. Or maybe I am over looking things, but I dont think I see Vibe writing about the music or the aritist and their accomplishments... what about BET, or the black music departments in record labels, the black radio stations etc... I am kind of talking all over the place but, Jimmy also talked about sampling and how he hates that you can hear him more now than we he made records with James brown etc.. and he gets nothing for it, and people probably have no idea it is his guitar they sampled. He also feels very strong about live music, and everyone was talking about how live instruments are coming back. And the electronic music will die out soon. AR development people were talking about how they are soon to have certain RB/Hip-hop acts go on the road with live bands instead of a DJ etc... RB produces are talking about working with live musicians from now on and creating more jobs in the community as well as building albums not hit cookie cutter singles. I do beleive there is a strong future for electronic music, I mean think about when you have kids, they will grow up with this music always listening to electronic music. Just think what the music they make will sound like!! When my generation grew up before we had many influences, but there was know blueprint for detroit techno, the black music of the past present future. again talking all over the place.sorry, bare with me.. Hal, talked of how he hates this eminem character getting all of these awards ... it really seemed to bother him because it is a black music, well DR Dre does make his tracks right,I completely understand where he is coming from and have even heard the same comments about techno how this scene is mostly white, and the white artist get all of the press, credit, deals etc. I dont know where I am going with this , just thought I would share my night with ya'll.. I have lots more to say but will shut up as I know someone on here is going to rip me to shreds as always.(not that I care) best, nancy --- Otto Koppius [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Gary Girard in response to Mike Taylor: A bit of generalising if ever I saw it! Now you're getting into race issues (I would assume you're of black origin to make such comments). I appreciate melodic tunes as much as anyone, but in a club on a big soundsystem the Richie Hawtin style works well. Just remember - white men can funk! And [EMAIL PROTECTED]: It was sad, because Derrick's set was so much better, and so completely over their head. DAMN THOSE WHITE PEOPLE, THEY JUST DONT GET IT! keeping racial distinctions alive well into the 21st century, Let's keep things in perspective, shall we? Mike was making an observation of the behavior of the white crowd at the DEMF during Derrick May's set and Richie Hawtin's set. Those who were there can confirm that it was a pretty accurate observation (and before anyone asks, no, I wasn't there myself, I had to leave DEMF before Monday, but Mike's observation has been echoed by many people that I spoke to afterwards). Assuming that the majority of people were there to simply party (nothing wrong with that btw) and because Derrick's set was one for the partiers with a sense of musical history and broader musical interests, it fell flat on the ears of the prototypical white 18-year-old who has never heard of James Brown and couldn't care less. Richies set was more straightforward dance music and that's what they came there for, so they partied. Simple as that. Essentially it is the age-old debate of should the DJ give the audience what they want, or should the audience want what the DJ gives? (so let's not rehash that one) And while Mike's generalization to 'white audiences' may step on a few individual's toes, it is essentially correct. As long as you realize that it's a generalization! In other words, it is *generally* applicable, but not *universally*. For the majority it holds, but there are exceptions. The things that makes matters blurry is that the white people on this list tend to be such exceptions (hence the strong reactions). So yes Gary, white men can funk. But in the broader world of dance music in general, most of them can't. Why is that? If I may speculate a bit here, I think it has to do with musical upbringing and interest. Most people I know from this list are music freaks, in the positive sense of the word. Their tastes usually range quite far beyond Detroit techno, to

Re: Re: warm welcome
dave: thanks for the background. I love hearing were people have been, where they are going etc...how they go into techno too (hint) yeah, long time ago we use to do road trips to columbus(and other places) to go to todds apt. (or someones) and they would have small parties it was so much fun. Last time I was there was for a new years eve party in 1993 at someones house cant remember who, but one of the djs was so good! it is all a little bit of a blur sorry. and it has absoulutely nothing to do with drugs, just time i guess. yeah, when my old boyfriend came to visit me when I first moved here (jon santos, know him?) he took me there and introduced me to those guys. but that was my only encounter maybe we can go to dirty together sometime before I leave! Yes, I do speak japanese, maybe that is why my english is becoming so poor!! I LOVE it, I thrive off of challange and that language is very challanging. looking forward to 313 in a new time!! thanks again for the warm welcome, hope you enjoy your time in NYC. the city really does have alot to offer. cheers nancy --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nancy, thanks for the reply, I'm a designer. My background is in retail architecture and interior design. My whole school career was in transportation design which led to me living in detroit when I interned for chrysler. It's funny that you mention the elemental guys, Todd sines if I'm not mistaken went to CCAD and I remember seeing him around a lot before the whole elemental thing got going. ( I started school in columbus and lived there for 3 years) I had a few friends in dayton (lived there too) who knew all those guys better though. I know all the guys at Temple and I know they throw a party every week at guernica(sp?) I'm pretty sure the evening is called 'Dirty'. Joe who is one of the owners of the store is a great guy, they all are really, and I have heard him spin before. They are in tune with the detroit sound. Maybe one of these days I wil finally get around to checking it out. Thanks for passing along the information on the foundation team. Since your future plans involve japan so much, have you learned to speak Japanese? dave = ***saRu maNe***tm __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores.
