Re: New Album: 10-20

2021-02-19 Thread Rob Theakston
Hello!

I'm not sure whether or not I've been on the list longer than you. Heck, I
am not even sure when I joined the list...probably somewhere in the mid to
late 90s, but then came into my own around 98 or 99. Things are just one
giant gaussian blur these days.

For my geography: there are many ways to split hairs on that, with numerous
purity scales out there. Out of veneration to those who have lived in or
served Detroit their entire lives, I usually say "Metro Detroiter". I have
lived in numerous cities around the region, including childhood and
adulthood stints in Detroit. If credibility points are squarely dependent
upon location, I'm afraid I may have some bad news about many of the list's
favorite producers and DJs.

As for who I am? Still trying to figure that one out. If taking a random
sample of people around the community, the answers would range from
"cantankerous, mouthy asshole" to "pretty decent fella". Well aware that I
have pissed off more than my fair share of people over the last few decades.

New Album: 10-20

2021-02-17 Thread Rob Theakston
Hello friends.

This may or may not be everyone's cup of tea, but may pique a few ears.

I have a new cassette out this morning. 10-20 is a collection of live
excerpts, unreleased tunes and other stuff culled from over the last
decade. Beatless, ambient stuff -- so that most definitely rules out 70% of
you. Vinyl and bandcamp to eventually follow, but if you email me a screen
capture of your purchase I will send you a link to the digital files, along
with some other goodies.

https://lifelike.bigcartel.com/product/rob-theakston-10-20

I tend to put out stuff once every ten years, so I promise not to bother
you again for the next 9.5 or so.

Thanks

Re: New stuff

2021-02-09 Thread Rob Theakston
100% agreed on that Rudiman. A great album for daydreaming and motivation.

Will check out that Prekop album. "The Biz" was a staple of my college
years.

Things in rotation this week: new Storm Queen, old adult., new-ish Nate
DeYonker, post-Diane Ross Supremes (RIP Miss Mary) and a compilation of
stuff from an artist named Violet who may not be everyone's cup of tea, but
I'm certainly enjoying it (h/t Kent).

I just don't have anything to add of a substantial nature, and would rather

2020-02-26 Thread Rob Theakston
It's the topic everyone is talking about: who has the best logo on the
Movement 2020 poster? Here's my hottest of takes. Get those oven mitts
ready.

I do appreciate the throwback simplicity of the 9 logo, but
appreciate the Blade Runner nod from Adam Beyer. God love the Swedes for
making Michigan a better place (Lidstrom, Ikea, Swedish Club of Farmington
Hills)

Enrico Polazzo's logo looks like something you'd see from a
pharmaceutical company or third rate lawfirm, and Loco Dice's looks like
something for a vague startup company that has twee ukelele music in their
commercials. Walker & Royce screams "craft beer for men with neckbeards"
and MK's logo is WAY too close to Michael Kors' logo for my liking. Boris
Brejcha is obviously a juggalo.

This concludes my wrap up of the logos on the Movement of 2020 poster. Tune
in next week when I propose Seth Troxler play nothing but renaissance music
and vuvuzela during his allotted time spot.

(313) Serious Grooves

2012-02-24 Thread rob theakston
Hello, it's me. I've thought about us for a long, long time.

And I have a technical question for someone who has smarts beyond me:
was Serious Grooves to be considered a KMS sub label or not? I have
conflicting information in my notes from a long time ago, but Discogs
is saying it wasn't, even though it seems as if KMS was fairly
involved in the logistics of the label. Anyone have any first hand
accounts of the accurate story line?

Thanks,

(313) Dan: The T-Shirt

2011-08-30 Thread rob theakston
People of Techno,

Hi. Rob Theakston here. You may know me from such emails as DEMF
Weepy Memories or Does Anyone Know Where The Hell I Can Find This
Glass Domain Record For Cheap?

Many of us have known Dan for well over a decade, and there are
countless others on this list who have enjoyed time with Dan through
his writing.

Through the generosity of countless people, the fund for Dan set up by
his family had exceeded its goal -- which is great news.

However, if you haven't donated already (which btw if you have --
thanks), the fine folks over at Ghostly have designed a t-shirt for
your consideration.

100% of the proceeds will be going directly into a fund to offset any
medical expenses and seed money for his daughter's education fund.

If I know anything about Dan, there was nothing in the world he valued
more than his family, and I would remiss in my friendship to him if I
didn't try to rally around everyone to consider purchasing a shirt to
help ease the burden during such a challenging and tragic time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me off list.

Thank you for your time. Back to quietly scowling.

Just out of curiosity, how many people are flying into Detroit this weekend?

Re: (313) Let's all have a Rodney King Moment ...

2008-04-25 Thread rob theakston
i just had some killer jambalaya.

for those of you who don't know what that is, it's a cajun dish
closely linked to paella. you get some chicken, sausage, bunch of
spices, some veggies, some rice (but not too much..be responsible! we
have a shortage!) and put them all together in a pot and let that bad
boy simmer. it's strong, but very enjoyable.

i made some garlic bread with this...but a little bit of butter on it.
then i got some lemonade, sliced up some limes and mixed them into the
pitcher. it was a great summer lunch.

while i was enjoying this dish on the patio, someone on the local
college radio decided to play an hour of Wolfgang Voigt projects. Love
Inc, Burger Ink, Gas, MI5, Wassermann, Allthey were all there.

why am I sharing this? because i want to. i don't care if it's off
topic. okay, you want some on topic related material? I thought about
the Detroit Red Wings over lunch and how they came close to blowing it
last night. There. There's some Detroit content.

so I ask the mailing list: what's your favorite jambalaya recipe? do
you have one? if not, you should. no person should go through life
without sampling this treat of a foodstuff.

thanks.

go red wings.

Some things about the recent thread:

1. The big bright line over which one should not cross on the 313 list
is this: No personal attacks, no threats of violence. I shouldn't
think that's controversial.

2. I make no pretensions of impartiality as a system administrator.
Impartiality you only get if you pay for it, and this is a volunteer
position. I am friends in real life with a lot of people here,
including Tom Cox. Anyone I know who gets obnoxious is likely going
to get the benefit of the doubt from me. Anyone I don't know probably
won't. I don't claim to be impartial, but I really try to be fair.

3. I don' t want to shut down or shape discussion on the list. That's
never been what the 313 list has been about. I don't want to ban
people from the list either -- that's only happened 3 or 4 times in
the 14-odd years of 313. But I don't think personal attacks should be
a part of the list, ever. If you can't make your point without
insulting someone, well, you're not really making your point are you?
Be a little more creative.

4. If I was to take a vote, judging by my e-mails, Tom Cox is not a
popular figure on the list. Maybe I do give him a free pass because
I've hung out with him, know his wife etc. But Tom at least cools his
sh*t when I ask him. If I ask someone to back off, and I get
attitude, it really gets up my nose.

5. If you disagree with someone, you should use that disagreement as a
means to refine your expression of your own opinion. If you're mad
because of something he says, channel it into wit, not vitriol. Your
anger means very little in this context; your ability to clearly write
what you think and feel is everything.

And everyone should remember: the Internet is forever. Everyone on
this list is going to be living with the stuff they write on it for
the rest of their lives. If someone makes you mad, your best revenge
is to think about the day he or she gets googled twenty years from now
and they look like a tool.

MOVEMENT 2008 DETROIT ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES LINEUP FOR
  vitaminwater MAIN STAGE

Detroit, April 21, 2008 ? Paxahau, producers of MOVEMENT 2008, announces
the line-up of artists set to appear on the vitaminwater Stage. For the
third consecutive year, festival partner, GlacÈau vitaminwater is
sponsoring the festival ? this will be their first year as the main stage
sponsor. The vitaminwater Stage will showcase Moby on Saturday, May 24th
from 10:00 pm to 12:00 am.

vitaminwater was Paxahau's first supporting sponsor, stated Jason
Huvaere, festival director. We love having vitaminwater on board because
they truly understand what the Movement festival is all about ? great
music, great energy and a great audience.

This year's diverse and eclectic roster showcases established electronic
acts and vanguard artists who exemplify the event's global fan appeal,
confirming the Detroit festival as a destination for the international
  techno circuit.

As a third year Movement sponsor, vitaminwater is proud to partner with
musicians, DJ's, artists and other creative individuals who incorporate the
product into their busy lifestyles as a simple way to stay healthy,
explained Mari Lee, Director of Marketing for GlacÈau. Plus, we all need
to stay hydrated while we dance the night away.

  about glacÈau
it all started when one thirsty man named darius wanted better water, but
couldn't find any worth drinking, so he decided to make his own. along came
a guy from queens named mike (he's like darius' robin? but don't tell him
that) and because mike has a gift for the gab, it's no wonder word got
around, thus emerged glacÈau, a fresh new approach to bottled water. today
glacÈau, the leader of the enhanced water category, is the maker of
vitaminwater?, smartwater? and vitaminenergy?. Now with 750+ full and
part-time employees, (that's a big holiday party) glacÈau is all about
helping thirsty people like you hydrate responsibly with something truly
good for your body. for more information visit www.glaceau.com.

  About Paxahau
Since 1998 Paxahau has promoted electronic music and has grown to include a
web archive, booking agency, record label and an event production company

in the history of detroit techno, there are so many artists who made
it all happen. but it wouldn't have been as remotely successful
without the seemingly endless encouragement, generosity, blood and
sweat of a handful of people behind the scenes. without question ron
murphy was one of the top people on that particular list.

motown murphy was the man, anyone who met him will inarguably tell you
that. and while the daily humdrum press of the motor city will
continue to report on the auto show, new casinos and plans to rebuild
downtown..there'll be a couple hundred people and dozens more kindred
spirits and expatriates who will be quietly reflecting over the next
few days on the massive contributions he made to detroit's cultural
legacy.

thank you, sir.

Most of you already know of Ron and how important he was to the creation

I'm also a big fan of the Formula Sound PM80 (a mixer that has been out

Both, 19 rack mounted, super clean signal path, no effects, tank like

So out of the choices given, 62.

hi.

if you're an out of towner at the DEMF this weekend, and would like a
free 12 from jared wilson's new imprint, here's what you do:

1. go up and say hi to him. he's got long hair and a beard, and will
most likely be eating a corn dog. he also very well could have
sunglasses on. but just go up and say hey. he's really nice. he'll be
around.

2. when the time comes, ask for a 12. now he'll only have about 20 or
so, but you'll want to get your hands on it. it's total acid goodness
with a TNT (tadd mullinix+todd osborn) remix on the flip.

normally i do not endorse such thingsbut this record is nice and
special. and brutal. good music to snap pigeon necks to, or it's ideal
music with which to eat beef jerky, slam a pint and cry about a
breakup. your call.

have fun at the festival everyone. someone pogo for me during kenny's
set if he plays sweet yesterday or i'm doing fine.

Whilst all ya'll are bickering about DEMF, I thought I'd mention that
the CBS has been playing some sweet Detroit and Detroit-vibed
techno/electro:
Agent Chaos--The Safety Is Off, World 2 World--Amazon, and so on.

I havent chimed in at all on this subject, due to the fact that Ive just
switched jobs and Im moving tomorrow and the COUNTLESS other things that
have my life upside down, but Ill give me .02 now.

I realize that for alot of you, the fest has morphed into something else
(for better, or for worse). I, for one, don't see this as a bad thing. It
may not be your idea of detroit, but for what is going on in detroit right
now, it's pretty accurate. Paxahau has put together a pretty solid lineup
that covers most of the bases from before. in some areas, it just scratches
the surface, but at the very least, theres alot of great music.
I dont know... I get where you are all coming from with the whole theyve
turned it into a typical rave thing, but lets be honest... look at the
festivals that are put on all around the world. Dont you feel this has more
to offer than, say... timewarp? Or even I Love Techno? I do. Its more
diverse than either of those, and with overall MUCH better music! (I dont
see any Happy Hardcore on there..)

And they did a pretty solid job of getting the next waves of Detroit
producers on there. Theres a couple others I wouldve liked to have seen
added, but I also see plenty that should have played YEARS ago (see: Jared
Wilson, Brian Kage, etc).

Thats all I can say on the subject. Im going... plain and simple. I hope
alot of you do the same, but I can see why not. I re-listed the lineup,
listing what all I am excited about, and to me... thats a good time!

I hope to see you there!

derek.

Re: (313) Fuse-In News

2006-02-17 Thread rob theakston
It's a shame that the city of Detroit isn't as helpful as they could be
 in this situation.

Unfortunately Detroit government in general is at a bureaucratic
standstill. This problem of helpfulness isn't just exclusive to the
fate of this festival. Word is from other event producers that they're
feeling the squeeze just as much as the Fuse-In producers. Is it sad?
Of course it is. Watching this thing from its inception to where it is
now leaves me feeling a bit melancholic. Complain as I may, sometimes
there's no greater joy than watching everyone get down and reunite
during that first evening right at twilight to hear Stacey play.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if investors/a giant corporate
sponsor came from out of nowhere to swoop the festival from the muck
its in now and turn it into something a bit more commerically-based
(ie: Tiesto, Prodigy etal). Here's hoping they have the insight to
bring Kevin or Carl on as creative advisors.

For visitors to make plans to come from overseas the
event needs to have all the details nailed down at least 6-8 months in
advance (so plane tickets can be booked at sane prices etc).

See above. The city government really doesn't care too much about that
at this point. They're more concerned about going bankrupt and having
to deal with receivership, as well as other woes.

I've been listening to BVL's 6 Strings For A Winter's Day nearly all
day, and it's some of the most beautiful music I've heard in the past
few years. This is a collection of Bill's improvisation on guitar
with effects, delays, and laptop, and it's shimmering, vague,
luminous, quiet and challenging all at once.

In the interest of full disclosure, Bill is a friend of mine who gave

me a place to stay for the festival in 2002, and came to play in Iowa
City for a show I promoted. But believe the hype -- if you have any
love for ambient music, you'll want to have this. If I had to
compare, I'd say it was like Fennesz, but not as hashed up, or Robert
Rich, but not new-agey or slack.

Michael,

There's a lot of reasons why this isn't happening down I94 anymore, to which
I will catalog to you in private upon request. In short, let's just say that
it's a new Detroit right now. And there's a lot of things going on that most
people don't even realize are happening.

It's a different sound now. To paraphrase an extremely wise man, Detroit is
in a reactionary stage to what is happening in Europe..which is a reaction
to what was going on in Detroit.

The music is different, the environment is different, for better or worse
the game has changed around here.

Colin Dale (and don't forget Colin Faver) were hugely
influencial in
debuting '313' music on the ears of many a Londoner. Tuesday
and Thursday
nights on KISS were religion. I'm sure many list peeps
somewhere have a

have

Time moved on .. they were 'let go' by the station. Colin
continued his
show on Groovetech but now lives in Marseilles. He regularly
returns to
London playing major gigs(18/10 '4th Birthday' Fabric with
Andrew
Weatherall) and U'ground gigs (31/10 'Jacks House' @
Telegraph, Brixton).
I can vouch for the fact that he will happily play at a party
for his beer
money (and a bag of crisps) and happily party on afterwards.

Imho Colin Dale and Andy Weatherall are 2 of the most
under-rated DJs
playing out - and with both of them being regular supporters
of the
U'ground scene (and seen regularly on the dancefloor after
their sets) its
highly appropriate that they'll (for once) get a fat cheque
playing the
Fabric B'day party. Punters are in for a treat - sadly, I am
not too fond
of Fabric, but if this year - as seems likely - I dont make

I don't think those stats are usually made public, as distributors don't
like to release their figures and neither do labels...as far as I know.
Especially if you are talking about more of the non-commercial dance labels

But if they have a barcode, it can sometimes be traced through soundscan.
Though I think you have to be a member to get those figures.

A Word on Bootlegs

Apologies, but we'll start on a bad note so we don't have to end on one.
We've noticed bootlegs of Environ material surfacing, often a whole track of
ours with a simple a capella over it. DJ's used to call that mixing before
cheap opportunists decided to sell it on wax.

Let us be clear: bootlegging kills labels and artist careers. If you buy
bootlegs of our music, or distribute it, or stock it in your shop, you help
to kill us. Do not tell yourself otherwise. Our originals are regularly
repressed (see below) and even if they were rare it still would not justify
bootlegging (despite their rarity and the difficulty faced in tracking down
the owners, we license and pay for every Unclassics reissue we do!) If you
are bootlegging, we'll track you down and pursue legal action. If you are a
shop or distributor peddling Environ boots and we find out, we will cease to
do business with you. It is bad for everyone but the bootleggers.

Without your support, we will disappear. We will lose the opportunity to get
our hard work to your ears. If you care for Environ and its artists, and
want to keep hearing us, please do not support bootlegs. Thanks for reading.

Fred,

This is ridiculous.

First off: as for the METRO AREA track it's a license. You can ask MORGAN
GEIST DIRECT, if you wish to : [EMAIL PROTECTED] There's quite a
bootleg of Miura I believe that's been around for days but would you really
think Source would have let us go with releasing a previously unreleased
Metroi Area bootleg at the time they released their CD; That record (more
gdm 3) was quite everywhere and features proper credits. Just like the KIM
record does.

As for the Pyschic TV thing, it's also a license from SOME BIZARRE. You can
ask andy about it.

It's even them who provided the masters for the mastering session to the
Exchange then Metropolis.

Although I do appreciate your legacy as a part of Pyschic TV I would
appreciate you checked your facts before blurting them in the open.

So true, I wouldn't know what I would do without AMG, and Discogs

I'll direct your attention to All Music Guide
 http://www.allmusic.com

search for Throbbing Gristle and you'll find a wealth of information -
if you have about five hours then check all the links as well

by the way - who were the people that came up with the idea of AMG? It
has to be one of the most brilliant websites and resources ever. I use
the website daily for music research and I'm beginning to have a nice
 stack of their books too.
cheers to AMG and all the writers and staff!

Just before everyone marches out of the saloon, could I possibly
steer the debate onto a less contentious area?

There's a lot of mentioning of band names that I don't know, I've heard
a track by Genesis P Orridge (pretty tasty IMO) that he did
 for
one of the Sabres Of Paradise compilations a few years back now
(Septic Cuts IIRC) but don't know who Psychic TV and Coil are.
Basically, who are all these people/bands and how do they fit
 into
the techno firmament?

Anyone care to enlighten me?

wow. theres lots to learn. genesis p orrige was in throbbing
gristle, the band that basically invented industrial music. PTV
was a later project that was more acid house oriented, though not
exclusively. coil is peter christopherson (also of throbbing
gristle fame) and john balance. those guys are nuts, their records were
very influential to me when i was like 15. without all that
kind of stuff, id have never been able to get into techno house
and jungle. theres so much more to say about these cats but i have to
 run to work.

2003-08-15 Thread Rob Theakston

Hi everyone.

I haven't been reading this thread and the power here is still inconsistent (on
again off again). There's a mass exodus at the gas lines unlike anything I've
seen, and according to my parents nothing like they've seen since the '67 riots.

I apologize if this ground has been covered previously in the thread, but I
hope those of you without power in Detroit (or with minimal power) are keeping
an eye out for your neighbor, especially the elderly ones. I know it's a very
boy scout thing to say, but in situations like these I think it's most
appropriate. I'm going to sound really preachy, but take two minutes out of
your boredom or away from that battery powered laptop and check to see if
they're doing okay.

Now I'm going to go back to my porch and strum a few songs on the ol' guitar.

stay cool (literally...it's muggy and 86 degrees out there)

Following from recent mail:
I can't answer the sample question, but I too was disappointed by Dwele.
I haven't heard the album, but I heard a 15 minute feature on Peterson's

worldwide (on British airways as a matter of fact).
He (Dwele) said that he wrote the album as a soundtrack for making
babies...
All the songs were very smooth late-night jazzual Peterson style - no
edge
to them
It seems that the collaboration with Recloose was lined up by Carl
Craig,
but wasn't particularly reflective of his style.
Finally he gave props to 50 Cent, says it all really

RE: (313) Best lines to the DJ

2003-07-16 Thread Rob Theakston

I was DJing with Clark Warner and we were supposed to be doing a
downtempo tag team set, and both of us had been looking forward to this
for a while.
However, this was not going to be the case..as we had several girls
come up to us repeatedly during the early hours of the night asking for
us to play hip hop.

After ignoring them for a good hour, one girl finally came up with a
stack of CDs. She went to her car and brought them in for us to play.
While this was a very thoughtful gesture on her part, the less than
pleasant side of me wanted to torch her CDs with my lighter, or play
them at extremely low pitches soaked in some Pioneer DJ EFX.

Things only got better when the pack of banshees decided to start
yelping the mantra hip hop! hip hop! over some record Clark was
playing.

I'm really surprised that no one's mentioned this yet. But cheers to
that Plaslaiko guy for pulling off a legendary set. All of you fools in
Europe need to book him. Like now.

Same goes with Mike Servito.

I'd like to get on a soapbox and talk about Mike for a second. His track
selections are the stuff dreams are made of. If he was in NYC, his face
would be on the cover of many a dance magazine. Everyone on this list
goes on about how great DJ _ is, but people are so overlooking
Servito. I think it's shameful he hasn't played a festival yet, because
the guy's got mad skills that make most pterodactyls look foolish and
boring. Like Jerry Garcia behind the turntables.

Okay, that's it. End rant.
