Dan was a special case, a DJ legend in his own mind; he was relentless.
He is the only person in the history of the 313 list to be multiply banned.
Every time I banned him he popped up with a new e-mail address, trying to
trick me into approving his subscription.  I ended up having to adding a
special 'ban dan' filter to my own gmail account.

I've also blocked all e-mail from one person who is still on the 313 list,

Yeah, I know, but I seriously think it's coming from a strong local
desire to expand musical genres that are presented at the festival -
like George Clinton, De La Soul, or Saul Williams in earlier years.
And maybe this is contrary to popular opinion/assumption, but Detroit
techno and house artists in Detroit are really not genre police. Most
folks are way more interested in educating people about all the
different kinds of music that have been and continue to be influential
to Detroit techno...and house, and electro, and booty, and on and on.

2009-10-22 Thread telepathic
That photo reminds me of the time I was booked to do a gig in London, Ontario.
It was an early 1990's ISDN hookup which was supposed to link this auditorium @
the University in London, Ontario with Noam Chomsky in Cambridge and Timothy
Leary, Genesis P-Orridge and Ogre from Skinny Puppy in Los Angeles and I was
booked to travel to Canada to play the after party.  Since I spoke to Tim and
Gen and confirmed they were supposed to be involved in this event I committed
just before I traveled to the UK to do a bunch of gigs over there.  Which meant
I couldn't do The Orbit club in Leeds because I agreed to do this gig.
Unfortunately, the kids promoting this gig were the most disorganized lot of
idiots I've ever encountered.

Normally, I would visit John Acquaviva and crash at his house on my travels to
and from Detroit but his wife was having their first child that weekend so I
flew to Buffalo, NY rented a car at my own expense so there wouldn't be any
trouble with work permits since I traveled with a substantial amount of
equipment at the time.  Then I drove to the hotel and the room wasn't paid for
so I had to put my card down for that.  Finally got in touch with the promoters
and was hanging out in my room with Richie Hawtin's buddy Rob Calisto and the
promoters had to spill the beans.  The University didn't like what they were
doing and they didn't want any rave to happen on campus and they pulled their
ISDN connection which were quite expensive to do at the time.  So no Noam
Chomsky.  Because Timothy Leary lived in Beverly Hills he knew some computer
whizzes who could link up and transmit to the University auditorium.  Genesis
P-Orridge lived in Northern California at the time so he didn't make it to LA
because the promoters didn't sort that out and I guess Ogre just blew them
off.

So I traveled all the way there and they got some of the money they guaranteed
me delivered to the Hotel which didn't even cover the costs I had laid out.
They asked if I would make some sounds in the auditorium that would not be able
to be heard but would be transmitted to LA so Timothy Leary could hear it which
I agreed to.  Now Tim was pretty deaf and wore hearing aids so this whole
booking was devolving into idiocy but they guaranteed my fee but they said they
couldn't pay me the balance due which was substantial.  So I got them all in
the station wagon which I rented and explained to them that we were going to go
around to all their bank machines and collect what we could.  Then they tried
to pay me off with magic mushrooms.  One of them then made me drive to his
brothers, who was a drug dealer and they came up with most of the cash
magically!  These kids were really arrogant and thought they could pull this
whole event off while they were all f*ed up on mushrooms and it was a complete
and utter disaster.  So I collected most of my fee and called John Acquaviva
and went over to his house, chatted, had a nightcap laughing at what a bunch of
idiots they were.

When I got back home I called up Timothy Leary and we had a funny chat about
the whole event.  He was completely hammered and hilarious with the students.
When the QA happened he just nailed them because these kids were all tripping
their brains out and couldn't string a coherent sentence together and Tim was
merciless on them.  He just called them out on their mindless blabbering and
scared the sh*t out of them. Ahh, memories...

the night before.  When the QA happened he just nailed them because these kids
were all tripping their brains out and couldn't string a coherent sentence
together and Tim was merciless on them.  He just called them out on their
mindless blabbering and scared the sh/t out of them. He was jealous that I
squeezed any money at all out of those morons. Ahh, memories...

Yeah, I don't know how I was allowed to sneak into the UK while I was working
for Psychic TV for all those years. But then again, GP-O and family where
tossed out of the UK. I would not bother going to the UK without a work permit

But if you haven't got a visa/work permit, you haven't got a visa/work permit.

I'm no apologist for regulations or overzealous bureaucracy, but the fact that
the rules have been re-tightened in recent years has been made crystal clear.

If the paper work is not in your possession before you travel, you're making an
unwise decision to get on that plane.

It's the responsibility of the agent and the promoter to make sure that this
paper work has been dealt with before the artist departs.

If it's not been taken care of, this is not a very professional thing to let
happen.

You can't buck reality unfortunately. It's not a question of generosity or not
on the part of the immigration staff.

It just is.

Nowadays, anyway.

And the immigration regulations for Europeans wanting to do temporary work in
the States are just as stringent, by the way.

2009-03-19 Thread telepathic
Well, I'm not opposed to it but after the past couple of weeks it would cost a
bundle. My mother passed away at the beginning of the month and her funeral was
on my birthday. She was pissed at Genesis P-Orridge for wasting my time and not
becoming sucessful so if there would ever be a PTV acid house era reunion. Gen
would have to do the following.

1) Resolve his problems with his ex-wife Paula P-Orridge / Alaura O'Dell and
his children.

2) Remove those stupid implants and stop looking like ... a candy colored
clown they call the sandman

3) Come up with a ton of money for his ex-wife, children and myself.

So don't hold your breath folks.

Some things about the recent thread:

 1. The big bright line over which one should not cross on the 313 list
is this: No personal attacks, no threats of violence. I shouldn't
 think that's controversial.

Accused: Thomas D. Cox, Jr.
Verdict: GUILTY

2 counts of threatening to physically attack Richie Hawtin and the Kooky
Scientist.
The offer still stands Tom. Come put me out of my misery...

 2. I make no pretensions of impartiality as a system administrator.
Impartiality you only get if you pay for it, and this is a volunteer
position. I am friends in real life with a lot of people here,
including Tom Cox. Anyone I know who gets obnoxious is likely going
to get the benefit of the doubt from me. Anyone I don't know probably
won't. I don't claim to be impartial, but I really try to be fair.

Accused: Thomas D. Cox, Jr.
Verdict: GUILTY

 3. I don' t want to shut down or shape discussion on the list. That's
never been what the 313 list has been about. I don't want to ban
people from the list either -- that's only happened 3 or 4 times in
the 14-odd years of 313. But I don't think personal attacks should be
a part of the list, ever. If you can't make your point without
insulting someone, well, you're not really making your point are you?
 Be a little more creative.

Accused : Thomas D. Cox, Jr.
Verdict: GUILTY

My personal opinion is that it should be made MORE PERSONAL !!!

 4. If I was to take a vote, judging by my e-mails, Tom Cox is not a
popular figure on the list. Maybe I do give him a free pass because
I've hung out with him, know his wife etc. But Tom at least cools his
sh*t when I ask him. If I ask someone to back off, and I get
attitude, it really gets up my nose.

Accused: Thomas D. Cox, Jr.
Verdict: GUILTY

 5. If you disagree with someone, you should use that disagreement as a
means to refine your expression of your own opinion. If you're mad
because of something he says, channel it into wit, not vitriol. Your
anger means very little in this context; your ability to clearly write
what you think and feel is everything.

Accused: Thomas D. Cox, Jr.
Verdict: N/A (Complete lack of Wit and creativity)

And everyone should remember: the Internet is forever. Everyone on
this list is going to be living with the stuff they write on it for
the rest of their lives. If someone makes you mad, your best revenge
is to think about , day he or she gets googled twenty years from now
and they look like a tool.

 Wow, Kooky...

I know Tom was guilty on the first account, as I remember when that
threat happened, but on the other 3 guilty verdicts... where did you
base your supporting evidence and where was the jury to define guilt
 or innocence?

I know here in America democracy is almost dead, but I thought we
still had a process where a guilty verdict is found through providing
evidence and having a group discussion determine guilt or innocence.

Forgive me for bringing up the Hitler name again, but I think in this
situation, it smells a lot like the Death of a Democracy. Kook, I
know you've got long-standing beef with Tom, but try to at least put
some sort of evidence like you did in the first guilty verdict. It'll
make your argument a bit more viable and a bit less dictatorial

RE: (313) ambient?

2008-03-11 Thread telepathic
Some of my Ambient stuff is up @ Beatport.com
Just search the label : Telepathica

So far there is the Complete Acid Didj
and Thee Saddist Musick in thee World

I plan on uploading more unreleased pieces there soon.
Fred vom Jupiter, etc

telepathic regards,
Ĩed

PS. Thanks for uploading that Kooky video. I don't have a working VHS machine
and I have a copy in a box somewhere around here. Thanks for not making me
search for it. I'm having enough trouble finding the sounds on disc for my
sampler so Marc Houle can remix it !

must thank whomever recommended stars of the lid - and their
  refinement of the decline. LOVELY!

desperately seeking more contemporary ambient electronic
music artists, discussion email lists, blogs, forums, labels,
  stores, etc.

There was a nice Robert Henke (Monolake) ambient set I've got called
Layering Buddha Live that I'd recommend. It's available free from his
 site:
 http://www.monolake.de/files_audio/free_tracks/RobertHenke_LayeringBuddha_Li
 ve.mp3. It's nearly beatless.

Also on the free tip, I really liked Off the Sky's Studies Of Lifeform In
Transit on Autoplate, which for some reason I think may have been tipped to
me here. http://www.archive.org/details/apl014. Kind of similar to Vladislav
 Delay's Anima.

I've only bought two ambient CDs in the last couple of years. One was Marc
Leclair's Musique Pour 3 Femmes Enceintes
http://www.discogs.com/release/413309 which is maybe a bit samey throughout,
but has a few keepers. The other was A Small Good Thing's Slim Westerns 2,
which also has some nice moments, but is so completely not in the spirit of
the first one that I haven't listened to it much since the first couple of
goes. I love the first Slim Westerns madly though.

Oh, and the new Autechre album Quaristice has a couple of ambient tracks
on it that are fairly dope.

Regarding this - and slightly diverting the topic - for those that work
at/operate/own labels or sell your music via download (and forgive me for
 being ignorant/naive about this)

does the sale of downloads ever generate enough revenue to allow you to
press up limited numbers of vinyl?
I would imagine we would see more limited (500+/-) copies of download
 releases in order to:

 1) satisfy some of the vinyl enthusiasts
 and
 2) create a collectable artifact
 and
 3) kick it old skool for us Luddites

I know that some of the income from the download sales have to go to things
like web/server maintenance and general artist income
but you upload a tune and it can sit there forever generating sales without
 using physical resources
I could imagine that some of that could be turned around into dazzling runs
of 250 red and purple marbled reverse cut double grooved vinyl with full
colour triple gatefold die-cut sleeves and a poster and iron on patches to
 boot ;-)

is this the way techno/house/etc labels are operating now?

At one point, Dan Bell + I spoke of being able to download music and
play it that night; but we didn't expect it to be MP3's; rather, we
thought the Vestax personal record lathe would actually allow you to
cut your own masters and play them.. ha.

But then record sales became harder for most of the world, not just
those who buy the records and play them at clubs; the vinyl plants in
the US were shutting down left and right, and it became increasingly
difficult to get quality vinyl manufactured here in the US.

Unfortunately, I fell into the same pitfalls as the rest of us, got
lazy, and started writing most of my music on the laptop and using a
breakout box to mix it down.. Somehow, with the advent of using
Logic, Live, I downloaded / traded / bought stuff from anywhere and
everywhere, promo packs from labels, sharing vinyl RIPs with friends,
buying stuff from Beatport, Stompy, Classic / MumboJumbo, Word and
Sound; [I do feel like I did my share of supporting the vinyl
community, with about 5,000 records, old + new]...

I don't want to kill vinyl, but I'm recognizing that us dinosaurs
might be among the last few that still hold on..
I've been to parties [and played clubs] where there's no freaking
  1200's in sight.. just CDJs!

somehow, I hope that people still recognize the value of the mediums
[visual + aural] and what they are _ALL_ good for...

What I think looking at covers (real or virtual) gives me is some
information / association that I can absorb very quickly and use
to make a decision on what to play next.
It's not the only way you could do that though - i.e. I don't just
want to do it this way because it's what I'm used to. I can
think of other things. In fact the covers thing would not be as

too many tracks - what I was saying about accessing the info quickly.
So let's imagine some other wonder gadget that did a different

OK I'm being silly now but maybe you get my drift.

Well guys and Diana... ; )

This will be my last post re: this incident. It most certainly is a dead
horse, just like the horse that tried to kill me when I was 10 years old.

I'll send you the link if anyone wants to hear that story...

First: I thought Tom's comments and contempt were absolutely hilarious.
Especially when he went for my jugular. He really reminded me of my father, a
complete uptight prick. I really have to do a blog about this on my
Myspace.com/kookyscientist page for my lame ass fans. The quotes were just too
funny.

Second: I do wish some nut would take out Bush/Cheney/Limbaugh/P-Orridge. Any
or all of the above, but sadly, Tom isn't that nut... ; (

Third: If I get invited to perform again @ DEMF next year nothing would be
funnier than to invite Tom to get on the mic and spew it out live onstage right
to my face in front of a crowd. Of course I wouldn't pay him but it would be
highly entertaining.

Fourth: I know the Paxahau guys extremely well and I know they are definitely
interested in booking all the guys from Detroit that Tom worships. It would be
great to let the stage for one day be named, The Thomas D. Cox, Jr 'keeping it
real' Detroit Stage and let Tom be the MC for a day. (every time I read that
keeping it real I hear Dave Chapelle's voice saying it and crack up) We'll
just say that for that day the tent is sponsered by Al Qaeda since that will
keep it really real and terrorizingly underground even though it isn't true.

Fifth: As Tom's wife knows in the private email I sent her, I don't wish any
ill will on her or her child. I have no idea who Tom is, what he looks like,
or really anything about him and he could probably physically kick my ass but
he will never outwit me.

(313) Moby assualt in Boston

2006-08-27 Thread telepathic
A few years back when Moby was getting all this BS hype he was coming out of a
gig @ the Paradise he did for this radio station here in Boston, WBCN. Since
it was a promotional event it was not publicized very much. Apparently, as he
was leaving the venue he got maced and punched by some angry punk rock kids.

These punks were so brazen that they had the nerve to videotape the assault and
put it online.

Now I don't particularly like Moby or his management but I did find out who did
it and sent MCT an email to let them know. I was present @ the offices of MCT
when Rich, Dan Bell and John Acquaviva met them to get on the infamous Prodigy,
Moby, Cybersonic tour of the US back in the early 90's. Didn't like those
people at all but I wouldn't condone them getting assaulted on the street.

Re: my approach to Tom.

Take a look at the Stephen Colbert roasting of George W. Bush earlier this
year. Pretty low brow humor probably by your analysis J.T. but I loved it.

You are right about the BS aspect of PR. I was constantly surprised how Jeff
Mills and Rich came off in a lot of interviews as their fame increased. Much
differently than their personalities as human beings.

PS. I like Pittsburgh. We did a cool Plus 8 party there once. Clark Warner,

(313) Steve Albini

2006-08-26 Thread telepathic
Eureka ! I now realize who Thomas D. Cox, Jr. reminds of.

Back in the 80's I went to see the first gig in Boston by Big Black. They were
fronted by this young, brash, arrogant kid with attitude named Steve Albini. I
went and saw them and noticed that they were using an Oberheim DX drum machine
just like I was using @ the time. Back then most musician's looked at people
using drum machines instead of drummers as heretical. Although Big Black had a
big, strong, forceful sound I wasn't that into their stuff and never bought any
of their records.

So years later I guess Ablini did a station ID for WZBC in Boston and he took
the opportunity to just rip on Genesis P-Orridge and take the piss. It was
great ! I loved the cynicism and negativity. And some of the stuff he said
about Gen in it was true !

So in the early 90's when I was asked to take over the first electronic music
radio show on WZBC which was started by Tim Haslet, I would always play that
Steve Albini station ID because I loved it so much.

I will say that Steve Albini became a brilliant record producer, much better
than myself. He also wrote very intelligent essays about the music business.
Now he probably wouldn't want to be seen with a drum machine in his vintage
studio.

Anyway, I hope Tom takes that energy and does something with it like Mr. Albini
did.

I had a great time this year, actually, and feel like I was at a
different festival than Tom Cox, even though I was hanging out with
him half the time. I hope that Paxahau will take into account the
criticism they got on the line-up, because it really should be more
  about Detroit music.

At the same time, the music I saw was all great. Fred Giannelli, La
Petit Orb, Szymanski, Jeremy Ellis, John Arnold, Tortured Soul, Dan
Bell, Carl Craig, Starsky and Clutch, Deadbeat, Godfather, were all
great musical experiences for me. Stacey Pullen, Mike Huckaby, and
Harvey at Oslo were awesome as well.

I wonder if there's some sort of dance music diet club going on.
Huckaby is looking trimmer, and Boo Williams has dropped probably a
hundred pounds! Boo was showing off his wife, and seemed as happy as
  I've ever seen him.

Main criticism I had was NO FREE WATER. That was downright dangerous

That was downright dangerous Monday.

That better be a paid position because I can't pay the bills this month.

Nobody Abused Roman P . Gen sold the publishing to it years previously and
it was a legitimate song licensing. An ad agency from Boston liked that song
and put it on the commercial. I guess the client really liked the spot and
they ran 2 versions of it a lot.

Now Roman Polanski on the other hand. He was certainly abused. He escaped the
Nazi concentration camps as a little boy. Only to have his wife and unborn
child get murdered by the Manson family..

No, that question should really be put to Gen

Are you free ? Are you really free ?

Gen is in the Auschwitz of his own mind.

You mean you didn't go out and buy a Ford Focus when they used No
  Ufos in the adverts?

Didn't go out and buy a VW when they (ab)used 'Roman P' ('Roman P',
 ferchrissakes?!??!??!?), neither.

Ads cause me to lose focus, not buy Focus.

FYI, granted that you can deliver an Ableton Live set that is previously
arranged or contains one clip that is a complete mix CD, I have yet to see
anyone do that.

Every one I've seen has put in something new or had plenty to tweak with
Ableton. If they aren't exploring those options then they don't deserve
Ableton Live.

As for: It's more DJ set or Performers own material well Ricardo was
creating drums and just strange noises and triggering them by hand,
and Richie was sampling records and playing with those, much like most
musicians do these days with samples.

So were they live or DJ'ing?

djing. especially if they can respond to the dancers (ie. playing a
prelaid out set in ableton is not far removed from playing a mix cd and
 pretending to dj)

 De Block, Mario Quote
A black and white world is what I truly detest, even if one day 50.5 %
of America would decide we're better off that way Mario

But a black and white world or is what we live in. Well at least here
in America. Things are SO Clearly Divided it's pathetic.
 That's just reality.

As for Stinson's comments, everyone has to remember that was back in 95'
even by 97' 98' he had somewhat changed his viewpoint on hawtin. He then
started to blame a lot of the problems on the first Generation's Exodus
of Detroit. So like any man/especially an opionated man you find that he
contradicted himself a lot through-out time.

None theless, This country's foundation is rooted in racial/social
economic division. Detest it or not it will always be present even in
 Art.
