FW: [313] Let's All Dance

2001-11-28 Thread veto

As far as the not being able to hear thingy...that just means the
 system was
crap. If the system is bumpin' you should not only be able to dance,

What about those annoying whistleblower dudes, and those guys that
holler 'whoop whoop' every now and then. They piss me off in a big way.

The highly unpleasant whoop, whoop thing is now a terrible WORLDWIDE
phenomena- I've been to Barcelona, New York, Detroit, London and many other
places which seem to have been affected- I blame Pat'n'Mick (one for the UK
audience)

hooray! glad to hear someone outside of ireland is lovin' this album. eamonn
doyle and d1 records deserve recognition for their brilliant releases over
the last few years - and this is, without question, their flagship record so
 far.

I haven't heard that album yet but I've really liked each release on that
label and also from Ireland the Freestate 2 release from a few months ago
really blew me away

That's just the way it always is at a packed venue where people want to
watch the artist. Too bad people couldn't watch and dance at the same time!

At the recent Melkweg gig in Amsterdam there were about 5 or six large video
screens at the front of the dancefloor with cameras pointing at Jeffs'
hands- still very busy on the dancefloor though

Hi there,
I picked up a record about a year ago in Holland on BPM Records- a
French label by the looks of things- called The correct use of Techno-
Vol1- A decade of Detroit Music. It's a strange affair with tracks from
R-Tyme (Use Me Carl Craig mix), The Electric Company (Bob Leonarduzzi, Zach
Roberts and Eddie Watson), Resse and Santonio (Truth of Self Evidence) and
Keith Tucker (Emerald World)- and I rushed home excitedly to put my new
found gem on the turntable.
Unfortunately the guy in the store had put the wrong record in the
sleeve and I was flying back to Scotland the next day. I only recently
checked out the record in the sleeve to find that out that I had a different
volume of the same series and that this one had tracks by John Tejada,
Teknotika, Santonio Echols and others.
Which finally brings me to my point- does anybody know who would have
put these records together and what is on the other volumes? There is a
little speech at the bottom of the sleeve--

I should thanx so many people for their support
If I forget any one I should thank no one, except Mad Mike for his help (and
his letters), Chez Damier cause he knows what love is. A special thanx to
my Daddy who gave me peace, strength and tranquility and the brand new B.P.M
Dream Team Sylvian, Jerome, Eric.

Stop to waste your time with drugs!!
I know what I'm talking about

SR

So, who is our mysterious, drug hating label boss with so many heavy
name Techno-bods to call his friend??? Any help on this would be greatly
appreciated

Cheers

Re: [313] Jeff Mills interview on-line

2001-11-15 Thread veto
In my simple universe I have a simple theory : there are 2 kinds of
music. Techno ( and all related genres ) is music with no message, you
can't understand it, it beholds no meaning than the sound itself. You
have to listen to it with your belly, your abdomen. It's music that you
have to completely endure, let it flow through your body. It envokes a
trance, like the shaman repeating mantra's over and over. You have to
feel it, feel the bass through your flesh. It's overwhelming, even
threatening to those not willing to assimilate. The music exists in
itself, as an assembly of tones, rhythm. Tribal music ( remember Burundi
Black ? ) was the first techno imho. It aims for the legs. The music is
the essence. The music IS the message.
I think that we are listening to different forms of Techno-a lot of
people categorise Techno as the more tribal, banging stuff but Kenny Larkin
War of the Worlds and most stuff by B12, Orlando Voorn and many, many
others don't fit into this area- they provoke an entirely different response
in me than endure when listening

That's why I don't consider Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygene or Vangelis'
music as precursors of techno, although the music sounds techno, it has
not that raw power that techno has, it does not invoke trance
The only thing these recordings invoke in me a a felling of deep
stupor.

I have challenged my physics professors too many times to count.
My god, I have such total sympathy with your professor!!

Basically, if man ever does discover that something travels faster than 3 x
 10^8 m/s, science falls apart,

I found most of this post to be pretty silly but this point in
particular struck a chord- are you really saying that if faster than light
particles are proved beyond doubt to exist that a car whose aerodynamics
were formulated using quantum uncertainty algorithms will stop being
aerodynamic? Or that your microwave oven will cease to operate. Science
didn't fall apart when it was discovered that light travels through space in
a vacuum and not some ether as was previously believed (the same ether
that held people onto the surface of the Earth before the discovery of
Gravity), not did it fall apart when it was discovered that the Earth
orbits the Earth and not vice versa (although a few people's world may
have!), Science expands to incorporate new ideas as and when they come
about, usually with a delay of a few decade,
The interesting thing is the the writer complains of a feeling of
brainwashing and having the Imagination programmed out of him- quantum
theory was one of the most imaginative feats of the 20th century- thinking
of things in two different way simultaneously- wave/particle duality is no
mean feat.
I believe that Techno can inspire original thoughts and I also believe
that it can have a theoretical base however, too often this is simply a case
of covering for a lack of any real originality or talent (Ritchie Hawtin in
my opinion), also these things can be taken just a little bit too far (I am
just old enough to remember the horrors of Emerson Lake and Palmer and
Genesis concept albums some of which were based on similar utopian
society ideas as are being touted about today by techno producers who should
know better).

Sometimes I think that when it is our time to understand, we will.

And until that point we should just keep our heads under the parapet??

[313] FW: Review

2001-11-14 Thread veto
Hi there, sorry if this seems like self promotion but I had to post this
review of our first release because of the last line- one of the funniest
descriptions of a Techno track I've ever heard!!!

De:Bug magazine (translated from the German)

Iridite 001- v/a (integrale muzique)

A new label from Glasgow, together with Peacemaker, Organica, Rei Loci and
Nieux, brings a new act, kicking itself into the hearts of all fans of
melodic yet progressive Detroit funk tracks in which the analogue bass still
leaves space for digital sounds. Breaks which open boundaries like B12
records did in the past, ***(?) delving into experiments with downtempo
funk, burning like red planet woken by a tom cat and finally a crackling
dub. A perfect record, 5 stars.

burning like a Red Planet, woken by a Tom Cat??? Who's up for Iridite
T-Shirts with THAT slogan on

Yeah maybe. Or you could go on believing everything your physics professor
has to say. The truth is that man will never understand even a minute
fraction of life and the way things work.

You base your statement on man's burning curiosity, which is a totally valid
point. I, myself, fall into this category. I am just saying from personal
experience, that when you assign all the naturally occuring events a number,
it just get's boring and leaves less room for the imagination to kick in.

BTW particle and wave duality is just another small example of science's
flaws. They categorize everything and then WHAM! Something like that comes
along and throws a monkey wrech into the equation. Then they try to find out
why and fix it. I guess it is something to do to pass the time, but to egg
people on by paying them money to fill their heads with it? Not cool. I
liked it better when the scientists (Plato, Socrates, etc.)just taught whoever
 would listen.

Uh, I don't have a physics lecturer, sorry

You are pretty funny, for a physics geek. =)

Don't forget the per say that you cut off to make your points even minutely
 valid. Nice edit job.

Excellent, so if I add back in those two words (didn't really notice them to
be honest) you accept the validity and truthfulness of my little rant- that
was easier than I thought

Re: [313] some records.

Went record shopping yesterday. Some stand outs were:

Gadgets Parallel - Finally I hear what the fuss is about. Superb!
Definitely some of my favourite non Maurizio Maurizio music. There's a track
with a constant bass drone that is maybe one of my favourite tracks of the
year so far. I'd appreciate any pointers on how to get hold of the rest of
 the back catalogue.

MOS Utilities - Don't know how old this is it, but it's a fine example
of what makes RushHour stuff so great for me right now. Classy Detroit like
sounds with a slight lo-fi sound and a distinct lack of nostalgia. Wicked.

Full Swing [Edits] part 3 - So much of this DSP stuff about it's hard to
sort the weak from the chaff. In the end it's really subjective, but I like
the rough expansive sound of Full Swing stuff. Maybe someone else does too
 :)

On a recent journey back to Glasgow I got the new Morgan Geist (Metro Area
4) and the new Fabrice Lig on F Comm- both excellent releases. Morgan is
somehow able to take a very simple formula and extend it over 4 releases
without it ever becoming dull- I guess they call that talent

BRAVE STARR * PROMOTIONS

PLEASE FIND ENCLOSED

Iridite EP (IR001)
RELEASED .

Fresh from the Detroit Electronic Music festival this collective of new
artists release their debut EP on Glasgow's newest techno label, Iridite
Recordings. The concept of this release brings 4 individual production
outfits together, fusing Electro, Techno breaks and Beats on 4 separate
tracks. With the likes of DJs Claude Young, John Tejada, Slam and Andrew
Wetherall already hooked on Iridite, this EP shows a potential that most
producers and DJs can only dream of today.

The artist backgrounds behind Iridite are highly impressive, with their CVs
boasting collaborations and releases on Sirkus, Finetik, 20/20 Vision and
Soma recordings with remix duties for Groove Armada, Aaron Carrol and Daniel
Ibbotson also, and over 10 years of producing Detroit influenced House,
Techno and Electronics.

TRACK LISTINGS : Iridite 001 EP

ARTISTS :TRACKS:
A :PEACEMAKER:PRECESSION
ORGANICA:MEDINA
B : REI LOCI:MELD
NEIU:PSIU

Opening Veto 1 is a jackin' tech naughty workout by Peacemaker. This cheeky
start up track is a perfect floor shaker to get groovin' to. 2nd track on A
is a more downbeat, chilled abstract number by electronic poet Organica,
definitely one for after dark hours. On the flip side B picks up the flow on
the electronic tip, with Rei Loci kickin in bleeps and beats and taking
techno to its limits with its ass shakin' knife edge drive. Finishing off
this showcase of talent is a track by artists Neiu bringing us a deep, dark
assortment of heavy static rhythms and smooth basslines. The whole concept
of this release is very workable, with tracks ideal from warm up to full
floor action all on the one EP, which is a rarity to find in this ever
competitive market.

Take note for future releases from this promising label and its artists, as
this is only the start.
Do not dare to overlook this! The EP will be distributed through Integrale

What the. ?
Whilst following up the Juan Atkins discography that another

past and discovering that he played drums and percussion on the 1990
album by The Associates (any other Scottish members who know of Billy
McKenzie's one true passion in life will understand the cryptic comment
in the Subject line of this post.. he.he.he). This would only be a year
or two before the unbelievable Sonic Sunset and 3MB feat Eddie Flashin
Fowlkes (..as in what ever happened to...) albums and round about the
same time that Basic Channel started Anyone who heard Billy
McKenzie's Discofied version of Blondie's heart of Glass from about the
same time will testify to his love of electronic music but from basic
Channel to The Affectionate Punch is a bit of a leap. Does anyone on
the list have any further info on Mauritzio's other early days
appearances (a sort of Techno before they were famous thread could
easily start here-did you know that Ian Pooley used to be my paper
boy)

313- Larry Heard on Jack Trax

2000-10-24 Thread veto
Hi there!

I'm a newish member from Glasgow who hasn't had much to say so far
but has listened intently. Anyway, here goes.

I have both of the Black market compilations in question (and a
signed copy of Amnesia. Wahey!), I will dig them out for a track listing
ASAP. The Jack Trax compilations were an early introduction to the
world of Derrick, Juan etc. for me and No. 5 in particular is one of my
favorite records of all time. I have heard before however that a lot of
stuff on this label was composed of out-takes, un finished work etc.
and that most of the artists received little or no money for their work
(some of the tracks on Amnesia in particular sound like a bit of a jam
session). Similar in fact to another label with a name not a million
mile removed.
On another note, does anyone on the list have information about a
TRAX (ah, there's that name!) release from 1993 under the name of
Phurture (their spelling). It is a nine track EP called The Lost Souls
and consists of truly bizarre lo-fi Acid tracks which I bought at the
time believing it to be the work of DJ Pierre. The writers' credits are
S Winters on side one and K Kool on the other (cat no: TX 5020 B) and
has mixed by DJ Dancer emblazoned on one side!. The mystery deepens.
Is it Brett Dancer in an early guise? Is it DJ Pierre out-takes from
1988? Could it be Henry, the mild mannered Janitor???
One last note, the fuss over the Jaguar rip off reminded me of a
similar case from a long, long time ago when an Italian Producer
blatantly (or bravely, depending on your point of view) ripped off the
Strings Of Life Piano riff and released it, complete with unbelievably
cheesy saxophone and female give me your love/take me higher vocals
under the name of Mimmo Mix on Final Vinyl. Unfortunately it didn't
lead to a massive backlash against Italian piano house and Strings Of
Life never got to number 43 in the British Charts but them's the
breaks. I wonder if Derrick has ever heard it or what he would think of
it now??

thanks for your time

JASON BRUNTON
