Haha - when I was writing the post I was thinking "I bet JT's dad knows
all about these".
When I first saw them on the wall in that shop in Brasil, not having seen
one before, I was just "whoa! what the are these!!!"

Can you imagine how insane a DJ set up to spin them would look?

The whole idea makes me think of one very important word.

Their other redeeming feature is that they're cheap to manufacture & ship and
short runs are much more viable than 12".

Small holes have won the straw poll, no doubt.

I got a while ago a copy of UR - Ma Ya Ya, very good sound quality with
the NSC thickness and atmosphere. Good tracks too.
But I just noticed that it's been released on 12" too, with Swamp Thing on
the flipside. How's that track like?

(I must've missed that release completely...)

the only reason i have any bad feelings about 7"s and 10"s is that they
tend to get lost among 12"s

One other reason for me is that in the middle of a hectic mix it's a bit
more difficult to get them off turntables as fast as 12"s (or even 10"s).

RE: (313) 7" centre holes - straw poll

2005-02-23 Thread J.T.
well hey, for what it's worth, i've pressed both small hole and big hole 7"s...

there is no competition -- small hole. i don't know why anyone would prefer
something you need an accessory for. even if you have an adaptor, it makes them
harder to slap on and play if you try to dj with them. if you have the little
yellow adaptors that snap-in to the hole, those frequently fall out or dont fit
as tight as you'd want. they're just annoying, an extra pain in the ass.

i've also never seen a big-hole 7" with very good sound quality, but maybe just
because they're not done a whole lot these days.

btw speaking of 7"s - -arne weinberg's spectral disease is fantastic sounding!
it has the thickness and sound of a good 12"...plus it's great music!

the only reason i have any bad feelings about 7"s and 10"s is that they tend to
get lost among 12"s -- i have to keep them in a seperate box, not filed with
everything else. 7"s can sound a little thin sometimes, but that's what eq is
for.

Agreed on the small holes - OK, I carry an adapter but it's just something
else to faff around with so sack it.
But ..10"s - are you mad? 10" is the coolest record size.

PS. Marsel, I had no luck finding your old Forcefield pages (Juan i/v etc.)
with the "wayback machine" Rav kindly suggested (actually I couldn't make
much of this, probably my fault), are they up anywhere?

RE: (313) 7" centre holes - straw poll

2005-02-23 Thread Paul Hudson
Got to be small holes for me. My current turntable has a clamp and I'm
not even sure large holes will work with this system! I don't buy
anything that has large holes and it means that I rarely buy 7"s mail
order incase they do have large holes.

Small holes are the standard nowadays, why go back to a system that
hardly anyone uses? I don't really see the point in large holes other
than nostalgia/novelty value. Most of my old 7"s used to have a middle
that you could cut out yourself anyway (which I never did) - Still found
them annoying as well at the time.

Paul.

from a DJing perspective - small hole. Less fooling around with the adaptor
and if you don't have one then you can still play the record.
also I think it makes the record more durable and less likely to crack in
two

the large hole 7" records I think are cool if you're going for a nostalgia
thing (if you're pressing up soul/funk music)

i dunno what they sound like yet, altho i ordered a couple.
i tend to agree with you that 7" recs don't sound as good as 10/12"..but
it's definitely not a rule.
a friend of mine has been getting into dancehall lately, which is almost
entirely released on 7" -- and they lack nothing, really deep bass and crisp
high's..i've been really impressed. dunno if the UR ones will sound that
good but here's hoping.
in any case, the quality doesnt really bother me at all anyways, i like the
slightly more raw sound and you can generally make it sound fine with some
eq on the mixer if you need to..it's really not much of an issue esp when
the music is dope imo

[313] 7/1 motor. tp to brazil on the dot not the dash

2002-06-25 Thread Hobey Echlin
apologies for the re-send. sean brought to my attention that the the rsvp for
the terrance parker/red bull music academy workshop july 1 at motor is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (not us-redbull as in my previous
post) thanks.

  Hey y'all--

wanted to let all you dj/producer types know the red
bull music academy is
recruiting applicants from the Detroit area for this
year's Academy in
  November in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

for those of you who don't know, the RBMA is a FREE
(they cover travel and
lodging; you cover food and drink (minus the red
bull) and pocket money),
TWO-WEEK DJ school/symposium/mentor-lab put on every
year in a different city
with DJ/producers like yourselves from around the
world vibing . Mills, Claude
Young, and Acquaviva have all been lecturers, as
have Tom Middleton, BMG,
Godfather, King Britt, etc. This year's RBMA is in
Sao Paolo in November.

The site redbullmusicacademy.com breaks down what
it's all about; two to three
lectures on everything from music history (Mad
Professor, original Hacienda DJ
Dave Haslam, etc.) to technique and tech demos a
day; nights spent in studios
or soaking up the local scene, which this year is
Sao Paolo.

There's a free CD-rom floating around area record
stores (Record Time, etc) on
last year's Academy in London that you can pick up

Anyway, with 64 spaces for students from 30-some
countries, this year they're
trying to refine the application process.

So, if you're in the Detroit area, there's an
informational seminar (lunch
included) at Motor in Hamtramck July 1 from 11 am-3
pm to walk you through the
application process--basically filling it out and
talking about putting
together your 30-minute mix to submit. you have to
rsvp to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to attend.

I was student at the Dublin RBMA two year ago so
I'll be talking people
through the application process July 1 at Motor,
plus we'll be doing a mock
seminar like the ones at the actual Academy with TP
himself, Terrance Parker,
talking about (and demonstrating) his own Detroit
story as trick-happy house
jock holding his own in techno city.

Like I said, if you're in Detroit and want to check
out what the RBMA's all
about (besides two free weeks in Brazil in
November), the workshop's 11AM-3PM
July 1 at Motor Hamtramck; rsvp to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you want
more info, hit me up off-list.

  caipirinhas all round,

>can anyone think about any techno or electronica 7"

there are lots of them
i think the earliest would be Juan 2 x 7" on deepspace
with "alleys of your mind"(don't have one but i know a couple
of ppl that do,it's very hard to find as you can imagine)
as for electronica, there are tons of'em,a few that comes to mind
are all the cabaret voltaire 7" esp the very electro vocoded"seconds
too late" ,400 - "beat the devil"(T Thorpe, moody boys ,klf) on
iluminated,Tuxedomoon - 59 to 1remix on Ralph("good times
bassline, rhythm box etc,, dj hell still throw this in electro sets)
Muslimgauze as EG Oblque Graph - tripitch , TG,Die Form,Coil,Yello,,
of course there are lots of australian ones too(Informatix - "proximity
switch" on au go go,would be a classic example ,Metronomes,
spencer spencer,systematics etc)
Kraftwerk off course had a lot of 7" too

>are there any classic detroit 7"s?
>
well in late 80's every big"hit" used to be on 7",so "big time" &
"good life" as well as all the FFRR stuff, are all out there(call it
acid,back to the beat,French kiss,blackout etc)
Chicago Trax themselves had 4 or 5 out, these are very rare&
according to Larry Sherman these were made specialy for dist
in da "west coast" the only one i've seen had Adonis-no way back
w Farmboy on the b,so i suppose they were all 2 "hits" on the
one 7",also Silk - Jack your body had a 7" rlse as i remember
a pub i used to go to that had it in the jukebox, same goes for
"Pump up the volume"
there's a 7" i have(thanx B D)that was given away with "record miror"
magazine, with Coldcut's"sweet tooth sonny - acid drops" on one
side and a great "4th Floor Allstars" mix by Frankie Mitchel(who
is better known as "Bones")of all their early stuff from tod terry,
lenny d,bones&musto,very nice
another early uk one (89)is from Iradial's Aqua Regia- Aquanosolo

as for actual detroit stuff, only ones i have
K Larkin - wonderin(freeb with warp lp)
paperclip ppl -throwopen 7001
dopplereffekt -bbicwnnmdx1
acid pimp - just call me dady chesire
dan curtin - matter of sound met 07140
fuse -overdrive +8019 flexi
there was another 7" i think, by Gerald of dopplerfx under a diffrent
name(bmg sold me that one when he worked in RT so he should know),i cant
rmmbr what it was called and i ended up swapin
this with somebody
also on a detroit label "Pulsar Records" , midwest artist
Laura Grab - dox 006
talking about midwest you have 7" from both leading labels there
Analoge & Drop Bass Network, but after the Delta 9 coment in
previous post i'll skip them!
back to Europe, leading the way in my ltle 7" crate are the guys
from Den Haag,my favourite must be a black label,no title thingie
were sombody(ference) keep repeating "destroying my brain"
in the matrix # mzo 1781 . Another favourite is: Unit Moebius -
acid planet 1(this one has a track b2,that always remind me of
the 1st drumcode rekid without the compression) . There's also
Acid Planet #2 by BS1 , then there's this fast electro 7" on green
vinyl with the info being ASBEST 001
best looking one:) is a double 7" by Beverly Hills 808303 v's Hott
on Viewlexx , one green ,one pink vinyl
from Austria i got 2 titles,first one on Cheap(freeb with Cheap13)
i think it's by Pulsinger ,another one was by Putaznick on spr 100107
Switzerland i have 2 both by dj Sid,1st one on white vinyl(mental
Groove records) a nice dbx like cut called "boots&lipglosss"
other one is a flexi
C Lekebusch had a 7"(as Magenta) on Experimental ex30
Thomas Heckman had a brliant, very D May like 7" as Drax on
Trope 002,defintly the best thing he has ever done, you simply
would not believe that it's him , another good German one is
by Vermona on white vinyl(toktok Robotnik 003) again very dbx'ish
on white vinyl
from the uk you have a b12&don lite one as Substance on Ulr
S O'salivan on Green 003 ,Railway Raver-acid4the 90's(freeb with
his Rephlex lp),Counterattack - we can (Counterattack)
Arovane(Greece??) had 2 lately etc etcetc

>wasnt mike inc's kreisel series on 7"
>
yes,but alot of them are represes for old stuff,so if you have a large
Ink collection beware, you might come home&realise you already
have this ;)

>mask100-500 was that on 7"

boards of canada - Aquarious on skam

archetechno and one other track that slips my mind right now.
Archetechno is a great detroitish track. As a matter of fact the whole
double pack is worth giving a listen too.

Anyone know any other J. Berger releases to keep an eye out for?

2000-03-14 Thread Dan Sicko

There's a ffrr pressing of Reese & Santonio's "Truth of Self Evidence" on 7"

also an old 7th city promo, a Ken Ishii R&S 7" that came with Jockey Slut
I'm sure there are tons of others.

Oh, and the kicker (which I've never actually seen) is a Fantasy 7" of
Cybotron's "Clear" ... or was that "Alleys of Your Mind?"

definitely a fun thread for the FAQ.
