That it was. 2004 I believe. It is actually an mp3 mix too. I recorded the vinyl via iriver, then layered each mp3 on top of each other, inspired by a few weeks in portuguese Goa. I still cringe sometimes at the alice coltrane part. The other mix, the wake, is a bit darker. It is a homage to the folks of the sea and dedicated to Mr Murphy, Mr Fischer and this lady here... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7206411.stm peace Yeah that was a pretty good mix, I remember this one. Re: (313) New Mix from Mani Miglani
Yeah, to be brutally honest and/or play devil's advocate, I'm somewhat in agreement with Michael. I don't utterly dislike it, mind you. Just saying once there was money involved, it got really homogenized. This is true of the live scene too. I'm in no way blaming or faulting Mani, he's delivering what the people want and there's nothing wrong with that IMO. In Detroit, no one ever made any money (not literally, I engage in hyperbole, but you take my drift.) I'll go to smart bar once in a great while, esp. if I know who's playing or have a friend who wants some company. But that, a Moonshine event that my friend used to run, Mamby, and other Chicago based clubs just have this undeniable sameness to them nowadays. I say that with all due respect and like I said most of the time dont _DISLIKE_ the music. My 2c. I certainly didn't mean to kick the beehive with that post. I've known Mani for going on 10 years, and he gave me a link to that mix, and I listened to it, and I didn't like it all, but it reminded me of sets I've heard in Chicago. That's all. And no it's not Detroit Techno. Mani Giglani was one of the techno buyers at Gramaphone Records in the latter half of the 90s, and I'm sure many of you met him in that capacity, or at parties in the City. He just posted up a new techno mix -- his first since 2004. Link and track listing at http://mmdot.blogspot.com/2009/03/dj-mani-dj-mix-03-13-2009-24-tracks.html It isn't Detroit Techno, but it is a great example of the Chicago take on techno -- dipping into up-tempo RB and house. Reminds me of getting lost in Chicago driving around listening to B96 late at night back in the day...

http://www.cornwarning.com/chaircrusher/Chaircrusher-June07mix.mp3 I haven't really posted a mix since2002? I have crap tables, so vinyl mixes are out of the question. I've finally jumped on the Ableton bandwagon. Live mix with a M-Audio XSession Pro Controller with some tweaking after the fact. I include some of my own work - sparingly, add favorite tracks by friends and 313-listers, and throw in some old favorites along the way. Time period hits every decade from the 1970s to the present. How long before everyone house DJ this side of MOS claims to be a minimal DJ ?? i think more house and techno deejays SHOULD become minimal. of course, i mean minimal in that their deejaying shouldnt happen very frequently, or for very long. tom ah . giggle .. Just trying to drum up the NZ scene at them moment I suppose ' I am recognizing that the minimal approach is the most likely way to establish an audience to support a regular techno scene again. Given that the presence of Techno on your average night out has been very limited in my hemisphere. Reports are floating in via Melbourne Japan about successful events featuring minimal styles .. with new punters expressing excitement and interest in the sound vibes. Totally jealous of the northern hemispheres rotation of festival and events that are strongly minimal focused. .. but there is always that sketchy balance between actually having a music driven scene before it devolves and becomes just a generically styled scene with genre of minimal become a banner for all manner of blah .. (i.e house musics) In listening to Claude's mix ..it is a significant delve into minimal sounds. .. and not that this begins to define a direction for all Techno .. but it does lend some weight to the broader influence of minimal as a style that could transport the Techno ethos to a fresh audience. While the minimal aspect has always been contained in Techno sound, I recognize minimal as part of the maturing of the Techno providers. i.e. keep the groove ' but less banging .. all the elements, lower bpm I struggle to see an immediate return to the hard banging driven force of Techno in my areas, and would hope to see minimal as a style that could pollinate a electronically immersed scene again. hmmm . yea. mm . yea . uh huh .simon -- --- www.obscure.co.nz www.psurkit.net -- m. +64 275 606012

Nice . mix .. Does anyone have any comments on minimalism ? Are we going to see the global revival of techno through minimalism? If you think Claude has jumped on the bandwagon you need to check his last album out :) m

Re: (313) New Mix Podcast . legal infos
Put simply if you have copyrighted music in mixes on your website be prepared for a nasty letter from the BPI/RIAA/whoever thinks they have the right to enforce this/etc Remember Emotionelectric.com? That's what happened there. The site was totally non-commercial too and it makes no odds if the music you play is all from small independent labels that will never see a penny from the money in licensing that they will try and get from you for having mixes on the site. Podcasts are no different afaik robin... Just wanted to ask the opinion of the list ' regarding the net casting of copyright (techno) musics ?
Re: (313) New Mix Podcast . legal infos
that's where these organizations overstep the line - RIAA really only represents the large media conglomerates. Small labels have little voice within their halls. Is there any independent recording industry/artist organization that truly represents their membership base? Creative Commons is probably the best and most democratic imo. You can also DL the mp3, you don't have to subscribe to podcast if you don't want to. And the crucial tracklist: Hey . all . (Adam this is not about your mix . .. just the whole area of net casts) Just wanted to ask the opinion of the list ' regarding the net casting of copyright (techno) musics ? I know that technically it is illegal ' in that you need the permissions of the artists to publish their music .. etc. However the DJ Mix has always been this promotional gray area for publishing copyright music. Now that we have entered the net-casting ' pod-casting era .. it changes the dimensions a bit, from a DJ handing out a Mix tape/CD to promoters and friends to the broadband access of many. So I suppose it comes down to a peer review again. Since as far as I know no one has ever been prosecuted for handing out Mix tapes. So does anyone mind the publishing of Techno mixes online ' Are the rules for making this okay ' that you publish a Tracklist and Links to artists pages where applicable? What if the site you are doing it through is making revenue from advertising on the hosting page? Obviously in the world of the net you can just do things, and get away with it. However here in NZ . our longest running Techno radio show the Stereo Nasties just got axed. So we are considering net casting the show instead and would hate to upset people or step on toes by publishing copyright music online in a DJ mix format, while making some revenue in return for hosting the show. Are there any legal standards for this? Are there any community thoughts about this ? Are there any label or Artists on the list who have views about this ? In one sense its no different from music played on a Radio Station ' except the Internet is different and highly undefined Is it streaming vs downloading ?! Any input appreciated .. .simon http://obscure.co.nz/profiles/steronasties

Re: (313) New Mix Podcast . legal infos
Selling mixtapes is different than handing them out for promotional use. I remember hearing about the dj shops in Toronto getting busted for selling mixtapes awhile back and I've heard about clubs or djs getting busted for not paying public broadcast fees for a paid gig but I've never heard of someone getting prosecuted for giving away free mixes labeled for promotional use only. If you are running a commercial site with advertising that would be a different thing of course. I recommend checking out stanford law prof Lawrence Lessig's writings or talks for a fascinating look at the strange world of copyright law in the digital age (check out his breakdown of the legality of google books online at google video). Weekend greetings list, My friends have started a new podcast over at their blog site: www.abrooklynlife.com. There is a new mix each week, not always 313 related, but this week I provided a mix, which is 100% 313 related, so check it out if you have a chance. How 'Detroit' is this mix?!? :-) It's also good to hear less well-known native D stuff like Starski. The track by Memory Foundation (as Hi-Lo) is a new one to me. Is it new?
