The Sony MDRV-500's are good at that price - haven't used the 25's, but they are more than £50, no? You can get both at http://www.sapphires.co.uk or http://www.djsupply.co.uk if you're comparing. I spent £25 more and got the Sennheiser 280's, which have a 8Hz to 25KHz frequency range, which is pretty damn absurd. I wore them literally about 20 hours this weekend, with little-to-no fatigue. The construction of the 280's also reminds me a lot of the Sony MDRV-600's, which are the tanks of all headphones (but unfortunately cost a bit more than the sennheiser's, with inferior sound). RE: (313) OT: Headphones
I own the wonderful Sennheiser HD280 PROs. They were only 99USD from www.thefriend.com. Sturdy as they need to be for my usage, and I'm quite clumsy. I have dropped them on cement more than twice and no breakage. Practically every part is user replaceable, including the curly cord that is only on one side. They are SUPER loud too (I cant even turn up the monitor volume on my djm500 to half). Another great feature is they attenuate 32db of outside noise. My only complaint is that they fit tight on my big a head, not uncomfortable though. Here are some links to reviews. I hope this helps. http://www.djforums.com/reviews/accessories/sennheiser_hd280pro.php http://buy.sennheiserusa.com/asp/Sennheiser/pdf/hd280-djtimes.pdf http://buy.sennheiserusa.com/asp/Sennheiser/pdf/hd280review.pdf Mike www.subsynth.net -Original Message- From: Langsman, Marc [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 8:50 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) OT: Headphones A friend is looking for a pair of cans for DJ'ing - hes looking at spending about 50GBP [75USD?] - does anyone have any recommendations ? Now that Pioneer has released their new 1000 series phones the SE-DJ5000s are available for under $100 bucks.I've been using them since '98 without any problems. They're a little more than he's looking to spend but they're very durable and I highly recommend them. I'm a freak. I disagree with everyone so far. :) My recommendation would be to get different headphones for home listening and DJing. just like me. for home use (producing, listening) i've got Beyerdynamic DT 331's and for DJ and other occasional use i've got Sony MDR-V500's i have Sennheiser HD250 for DJing and other outdoor activities :) and Beyerdynamic DT831 with Meier-Audio's Porta Corda (headphone amp) for home listening... bye rob

...and OF COURSE the studio standard, the AKG K240m's as well as the new lower Ohm rated version that just came out recently. The most comfortable headphones I've ever had. Personally speaking, and I know you probably won't agree, but I was given some Beyerdynamic DT150's (the black ones) and they sound great, have replaceable parts, and are very hard wearing. You must have tiny ears... The whole of the exposed part of my ear doesn't fit within the confines of the Sony 700 without being crushed against my head, resulting in annoying ear pain after an hour or two. Why they make them round is a mystery to me when people's ears are more or less oval in shape. I again reccommend the IXOS: http://gear.ign.com/articles/307131p1.html ... I recently scored a pair of the silver sony jobs [not sure what the model number is] they were about 100GBP I think - I listened to them next to pair fo technics and they clearly outclassed the technics - the sonys show virtually no distortion at really high vols. I also find the sony's fit over my ears well wheres as many others such as technics and senheiser sit kind of on your ear which doesnt isolate as much outside noise and isnt too comfy imo. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 10 October 2002 12:48 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) OT: headphones Hi, what would you consider to be the best headphones for mixing in a club as well as for home listening? Re: (313) OT: headphones
Sennheiser I don't use a closed cup earphone though because of the risk of tinnitus Sennheiser makes both open and closed models though Their sound is much more accurate (and clear/defined) than any other headphone I've ever used and I find that generally they are loud enough for most environments - and I have found that the more accurate the sound is, the less volume I actually need because things aren't muddy and I don't need to turn up the cue (and if I'm following another DJ I find myself often turning the cue volume down). Sennheiser headphones can get expensive but usually the more you pay for headphones the better the quality - the most important thing is not to skimp on the quality of the sound because it's not just your mix that you should be concerned about but also your hearing and the health of your ears. Tinnitus sucks. http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm.nsf MEK [EMAIL PROTECTED] rsluyter.nl To: 313@hyperreal.org cc: 10/10/02 06:47 AM Subject: (313) OT: headphones Hi, what would you consider to be the best headphones for mixing in a club as well as for home listening? Re: (313) OT: headphones
There is a cheaper version which I have, Sennheiser HD-25SP which are half the price. Again everything is replacable, I've had them 2 years now and I use them ALL the time still work fine. I think Sennheiser have some weird guarantee that new parts will be available for up to 10 years from the day you bought them ?! The only slightly annoying this about the SP's is wire connects to both ears and they do tend to tangle a lot and start strangling you which really starts to p*ss you off after a while. One good thing is the weight - they're very light. I don't find them too 'pinchy' on the ears. --Mike Toby Frith wrote: Sennheiser HD-25 1's They're incredibly loud and all the parts are replaceable as well.
I can't handle that closed ear business, especially when DJing, as it makes you either monitor via headphones or monitors, never somewhere in between. I always gone for the one ear in phones other ear to monitors strategy -- This message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the designated recipient(s) named above. RE: (313) OT: headphones
I absolutely *hate* sennheisers, I got a set of beyer dynamic phones about 4years ago - they sound *really* clear at any volume, theyre comfortable, everything is replaceable and at 100GBP they seemed expensive at the time but given how long they've lasted I reckon its very reasonable. My only slight quibble would be that the bass response is not as much as other phones though personally I find it quite nice, particularly when producing, since I find lots off bass can reduce the general clarity of the sound. Oh yeah and the silver sony numbers marc has got are nice as well comfy, well built, nice sound and marc hasn't broken them yet which is quite an endorsement! :-Original Message- :From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:Michael.Elliot- :[EMAIL PROTECTED] :Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2002 2:52 PM :To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] :Cc: 313@hyperreal.org :Subject: Re: (313) OT: headphones : : :Sennheiser : :I don't use a closed cup earphone though because of the risk of tinnitus :Sennheiser makes both open and closed models though :Their sound is much more accurate (and clear/defined) than any other :headphone I've ever used and I find that generally they are loud enough for :most environments - and I have found that the more accurate the sound is, :the less volume I actually need because things aren't muddy and I don't :need to turn up the cue (and if I'm following another DJ I find myself :often turning the cue volume down). :Sennheiser headphones can get expensive but usually the more you pay for :headphones the better the quality - the most important thing is not to :skimp on the quality of the sound because it's not just your mix that you :should be concerned about but also your hearing and the health of your :ears. Re: (313) OT: headphones
This is exactly it. Headphone technology is at the level where if you treat them right, they will last 20+ years. I have been looking for headphones like this for years, but I became frustrated at the local selection and ended up getting the Sony 700's. I use headphones for music production primarily, DJ'ing second and then general music listening/gaming. Although the Sony's are solid, I know there is a lot that I am missing. Looks like Sennheiser understands what an audiophile requires. Great thread. Re: (313) OT: headphones
I'm a freak. I disagree with everyone so far. :) My recommendation would be to get different headphones for home listening and DJing. If you're looking at spending around £100, it wouldn't cost too much more to pull this off. I have never heard anything quite as nice as my Grado's (and I've used the Sennheiser's a number of times). I have the Prestige 125's, which isn't even close to the top of their line. Check it out here, and most importantly, find some place to give them a listen. They are stunning. http://www.gradolabs.com I never use these for DJing though. They have 360 degree rotating earpieces, which are somewhat annoying for DJing, and I prefer a closed earpiece (for what that's worth). The trick with a closed earpiece is not to put it over your entire ear, but cup it over the rear half, top half, or whatever's comfortable. This is what works for me anywhow... Open air headphones sound absolutely brilliant, but I want to be able to close off the outside sound at times, and if you cup your hand over an open air earpiece you get phasing first, then muffling. Whatever... it doesn't work so great for me, and I want something I can abuse to all hell while DJing, not audiophile headphones I'll be afraid of damaging. For Djing I use the Sony MDRV-600's, which I've had about 7 years now, original purchase price around $120 I think. I broke one of the headphones to the point where it was attached only by the tiny audio wire leading into the earpiece. A little duct tape has held these together for 4 or 5 years since. Personally, I much prefer the bigger cup on the 600s to the 700s. I also prefer the flatter frequency response. The 700s are all bass and high if you ask me, which I don't much care for. I also don't like the way they sit on my head, but this is absolutely a personal preference issue. If I bought new headphones now, I'd get some big, loud, foldable, reasonably cheap headphones with a chord I liked, hopefully paying no more than £50. I think sound quality is almost a non-issue in DJ headphones. Look at TP and his phone. Volume and comfort are the most essential qualities. Anyway, this is why I think trying to find one pair of headphones is the wrong solution, but YMMV of course. I would be lax if I failed to mention the (don't cringe) Ixos Ministry of Sound DJ1001. I picked a pair up a couple of months ago and have been really happy with them. The best part is that they don't crush your ear against your head like the Sony ones will and they have a stereo/mono switch that is great for mixing. www.ixos.co.uk Mind you, I dumped my MDR-V700DJs for these. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2002 4:48 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) OT: headphones Hi, what would you consider to be the best headphones for mixing in a club as well as for home listening? I only use Kraftwerk-Headphones they are built into my Darth Vader Helmet but don´t ask me about them - very very exclusive by the way: I found out for djing in a club it´s good to switch off the lightsabre (otherwise you might hurt yourself also people might think you´re into some kind of glowsticks-business - experienced both last, week when luke was in town for a gig I would be lax if I failed to mention the (don't cringe) Ixos Ministry of Sound DJ1001.
