Re: (313) Return to a free DEMF on July 4th?
Okay, let's not be idealistic. Events of this size and scale are done for money. The logistics and scale are too crazy to justify doing for the love of music. If people want to do an event for the love of music, they find a loft, scrape some money together, and fly in a couple of talented DJ's whose music they believe in. Personally, I have grown to dislike festivals in general, they just do not have a vibe I can get into. I suppose it's okay to help artists get paid well, but at the same time, I tend to lose respect for artists who ONLY play festival size events. As far as this particular festival, the important question is, whether the commercial events have a positive impact on the more underground scene, with good events springing up around the large scale event. This has been the best aspect of DEMF in my view, to the extent that last year I didn't enter the main festival at all, and probably had the most enjoyable DEMF experience yet. ~David On Wed, Nov 20, 2013 at 10:29 PM, Arturo Lopez wrote: > I've always been of the opinion that there are two types of events in our > little corner of the music scene: > > The ones people throw to make money and the ones people throw for the sake > of everyone having a good time. > > One maybe charges enough money that your artists get paid and maybe > everyone breaks even. I've always been of the opinion that there are two types of events in our little corner of the music scene: The ones people throw to make money and the ones people throw for the sake of everyone having a good time. One maybe charges enough money that your artists get paid and maybe everyone breaks even. One tries to sell VIP bracelets. I hope it's the former type of event, but I suspect its the latter. -Arturo
Re: (313) Return to a free DEMF on July 4th?
Timing is everything, and a decade ago, things were a lot different... look, I've got a lot of people that I know that were not paid from working for her... but, I know that there's no way her event would be a success if it was the weekend following Movement... I also know Movement is not the only Electronic Music Festival happening in the city now, there's a total of 4 now, and Carol's will be 5, yes, the other festivals are smaller, but so what. A friend of mine in New Orleans just posted about how in New Orleans they have 10 jazz fests a year, and all of those fests help the economy... so umm... yeah... Carol's been the person managing all of the Sponsorships for the Detroit 300 Conservancy since 2007, and the whole mission of that place is to spur Detroit's Economy through events... I started working there in 2006, and I've literally seen downtown's Economy change through the Events I helped to Program & Book... truth be told, my love of Techno made it sometimes difficult to work in the same office as her, but over the years I've come to realize she's quite the powerhouse, and she's earned my respect. So, yeah, her thought that having 10 festivals a year will help Detroit's economy, well, it makes sense to me, and I think the naysayers will continue to be so... myself, though, I support it... we need Movement here, but we also need the SCP Backpack House Festival, and once FEMT is up and running everyone's gonna say that we need it too. Every bone in my body tells me that this is a good thing for the city, and that we'll all benefit from it... my gut instinct. I have a pretty good idea what's been happening downtown and what's not been happening in the rest of the city having lived there most of my life. Chess pieces are great, but there is a long way to go before positive progress is achieved; regular neighborhoods need to start turning around. I honesty don't think that Detroit is not at the stage to support two large techno festivals, especially since they are not together. I hope it can, but I don't see it. If this new festival would have been scheduled, say the following weekend after Movement, I could see some of the "unity" and community the article alludes to. After parties and day raves could have been the glue and the two fests the book ends. And no, I have no idea what Carol does for a living. What I do remember is that a lot of people weren't paid when she was last at the helm and next thing I heard she moved on and started ravestivals in other cities. Kudos to her. If she's been sleeping on a bed made of money this whole time, why did it take a decade for DEMF to come back? Just curious. The idea is interesting, but the reality is kind of strange. Re: (313) Return to a free DEMF on July 4th?
While having two festivals will be great locally, it will be interesting to see how this pans out demographically with foreign visitors. There has been a slight resurgence of folks from abroad coming back to Movement. With two festivals to pick from most people from outside of the area will pick one or the other and the majority will not be able to do both. Regardless of what Ms. Marvin tries to diplomatically brush over with the "there should be 10 techno festivals a year" line, this is a direct competition with Movement, and not admitting admitting that is interesting. I guess the lineups will be key. On Wednesday, November 20, 2013 5:15 PM, U&I Design wrote: There already seems to be some confusion about this on here.
