Tricky one that, a lot of fine releases to choose from. You can't go wrong with
some Terrence Dixon though, From The Far Future Part 2 and his latest, Badge Of

Re: (313) Recommendations for 1200s cartridges/styli

2006-08-14 Thread kent williams

I like the Ortofons, and this doesn't really affect you, but the tone
arms on American 1200s are different than the Euro ones, and Ortofons
don't fit exactly right. Swap out cartridges too many time and the
connects get flakey. I'd try and figure out if you have proper tone
arms for Ortofons.

The Shures are pretty nice too if you don't mind headshell/cartridge combos.

Not that I'm on par with these guys, but what do folks like Claude

Would any of you 313 people consider things like Ortofon Qberts for

The M44-7s have quite unpleasant highs, especially with vocals. Otherwise they
track very good and have very small tracking force compared to other dj styli,
which causes less wear on vinyl.

Personally I would go for Shure M35x, which track a bit poorer, but sound
better. But you should try them out before buying, since after the M44-7's the
unimproved skip resistance did take some time to get used to, and I wouldn't
describe my mixing style aggressive at all.

the shorter lp mix (not the daniel wang/brennan green) that

disco music. Mashed up theo kick drum, nice disco loop, beautiful bass line

2001-09-04 Thread Wes
Hmm...'Strata' --don't Dan Curtain the Porpoise Maker have imminent
releases on that label too?

Wes ;-)

Actually Denver McCarthy is a nice combo between deep house, ambient, and
melodic techno. Strata is releasing some nice music.

Statra, actually. Same label released Denver McCarthy's Rise Shine album a
year or two back: 100% quality techno. A must-check if you missed it.
(Oh yeah, one more thing re. that nice quote someone offered the other day--
the poet Robert Frost was as American as they come).

Pedantically yours,
Wes

Also check out the STRATA label, especially the 2 Harry the Bastard
compilations, and the forthcoming album of Love From San Fransisco (Charles
  Webster, yummie...)

But I guess this is more or less deephouse instead of Techno...

Aubrey's releases on Ferox and just about anything on that label will
satisfy, Ian O'Brien, John Tejada, Russ Gabriel (He is the Man is a
fantastic EP), Out of the Loop Recordings does nice deep house/soulful
techno with a nice jazz edge

Hi again

Need some help, I've been a bit disappointed with the techno i've heard
lately and thus have gotten more into deep house. so, can anyone give me
any recommendations on good techno tracks/artists to look out for? i'm
talking in the style of octave one, RNG, the more soulful stuff, not the
harder stuff. or should i just keep buying older stuff from around '88 -
'97, cos nothing much has caught my attention lately.

thanks

nath

np - the other people place (on the warp site) - very nice.

[313] Recommendations: Fischerspooner, Gigolo 5, Varley

2001-05-18 Thread Tom Robbins
Just have to jump in to recommend the forthcoming Fischerspooner album,
'Best Album Ever' on Gigolo - brilliant retro electropop and a must for fans
of Adult (who, coincidentally, have remixed their 'Emerge' single). In fact,
Gigolo seem to have pretty much cornered the market in this style of punkish
retro electro-pop, as shown by the new Gigolo CD Five collection, with acts
like Tuxedomoon, Miss Kittin The Hacker, Terrence Fixmer, Dopplereffekt
and Steril. The comp also includes the brilliant 'Flash' by Orlando Voorn, a
new track from 3 Phase, a cut from Chicago's DJ Traxx and two Japanese
Telecom tracks.

Finally, given the recent discussion of Gez Varley (G-Man), his new 'Bayou
Paradis' album on Force Inc is a must for fans of the classic Detroit style
of cosmic, dreamy techno, the kind of thing Delsin are doing so well these
days.

Cheers,
TOM

 Hi Guys,
I've just moved to Amsterdam, and I'm looking for a
 little advice on
where I can buy records, who are the decent djs in town,
 where I can hear
really good techno.. etc. I've checked out the scene a bit,
 but it's a
little bewildering when all the names are new to you...

Hi,

we run a mailinglist on hyperreal about dutch techno. You should find plenty
of info at our website: http://lowlands.hyperreal.org

Hope this helps,

(313) recommendations...

2000-03-14 Thread Peter T. Bense
Hey guys ... just wanted to share my extreme pleasure with a few things I
received this past week...

Jesper Dahlbäck - Sand Vatten (on SVEK)

Dahlbäck aka The Persuader just seems UNSTOPPABLE! This is a 4 track 12
that incorporates more of the live instrumentation production techniques
that we heard on STOCKHOLM. Two tracks... Sand Vatten ... Dub versions
of each are also on the records. The music is supreme... the dub ones are
somewhat dancefloor friendly and have really interesting syncopation. File
under deep house

10/10.

G-Man [the album on i220]

I don't have time to say too much about this one other than that it really
sits well with me... two slabs of nice syncopation and really fresh
percussion sounds [I guess that makes this an album]. File under
tech-house/techno

9/10

Scuba - Where the Wild Things Are

Quite frankly I picked up this release for one track that I cannot seem to
get enough of Heaven being the one in question. It is INCREDIBLE. Heard
this one first on Derrick May's Mayday mix CD and have been trying to hunt
it down since. Smooth chords, warm vocal sample... combined with an
interlude of a woman talking about fantasies [in Spanish]... really really
really beautiful and uplifting yet dancefloor oriented.

10/10 for that track... the rest of the 12 I don't really like... overall
6.5/10.. but I'd recommend picking it up for just that cut.

UK Gold Soulless EP - PRIMEEVIL 018

3 tracks here... no real info was given on the promo sheet about who these
guys are but there are 2 really phat phat tracks on here. A1 is Agent
Wood and AA1 Confined are the ones to focus on. 130+ BPM tracks with a
really solid kick to them and heavy basslines combined with vocal snippets
that say things like oooh... yeah... makes you feel good [there's both a
male voice and a female voice, sort of alternating between the measures
sprinkled with this sample and it sounds really nice].

9/10

... thats all for this week!
