Here since 1999-ish?

Currently in Silicon Valley (although presently in Russia on
vacation); for many years subscribed from the Carolinas. Met a lot of
cool people both directly and indirectly through music. Went to
DEMF/Movement this past year for my first time! I've learned a lot
from all the techno-heads

2013-06-09 Thread Peter Keur
Here since..? 2003? Full blown lurker. Have been unsubbed for a few years,
resubbed a year or three (?) ago.

Mailing this from the birth city of... DJ Tiesto.

Anyway, hope to visit Detroit sometime.

For now I just want to thank all the active members for pointing me in all
kinds of directions. (Read: Omar-S, Theo Parrish (and the other two
chairs), Drexcyia, Dan Bell, Aux 88, and the list goes on...

But also my love for disco cuts, and clips from The New Dance Show, Shari
Vari, Kraftwerk (wich I regarded retarded when I first subscribed) and this
thing called dub-techno...)

This list has educated me like no other. And for that, I thank you!

I’ve been mostly lurking, on and off subscribed since around 2000.

Hehe. If 313 was always the dad techno list, there's certainly a few more
actual dads here these days. Y'all seen this? http://techno-dads.com/

On this end of the Surrey Techno Dads posse, my older boy is making a habit
of asking for fun fun fun on a weekend morning, which pleases me to no
end. Sometimes he asks for robots instead. Not long ago he discovered the
Planet Delsin CD, which is now known as blue robots. He was busting some
new moves to the Starfighterz track on that yesterday.

sounds like there should be a 313 junior list at this stage. my two
youngest like rock (boy, 5: ac/dc, guns roses) and pop (girl, 7:
katy perry, psy), but the eldest (14) is getting into more electronic
music - she loves henrik schwarz's remix of omar. bought it herself,
which is probably unusual.

Hehe. If 313 was always the dad techno list, there's certainly a few more
actual dads here these days. Y'all seen this? http://techno-dads.com/

On this end of the Surrey Techno Dads posse, my older boy is making a habit of
asking for fun fun fun on a weekend morning, which pleases me to no end.
Sometimes he asks for robots instead. Not long ago he discovered the Planet
Delsin CD, which is now known as blue robots. He was busting some new moves
to the Starfighterz track on that yesterday.

Re: (313) roll call?

2012-11-29 Thread Ronny Pries
Well, there are certainly some good events every now and then.
Especially Pudel Golem are the places to watch out for. But the
majority of nightlife these days is powered by boring DJs at excellent
venues. Maybe i became a bit blind for what's going on but the scene has
seen much better days in Hamburg. At least in terms of diversity.

Still hope for a change. But i guess the crowd in Hamburg has always
been driven towards trends.

Thank you! I'm surprised you say that. I challenge you to tell me
another city holding a night called A TRIBUTE! drexciyan music all
night long like last September in Pudel. Besides, both Anthony Shakir
and Mike Huckaby have been constant guests here as well as other
Chicago djs. In 2 weeks Mike is back again to do his Sun Ra set. And
most of the new Detroit music gets played through the Smallville shop.
It's not the perfect nightlife but believe me it is better than where
I come from.

I def agree with you there. I do get frustrated most of the times but
still won't complain, could be much worse. It's a general worldwide
phenomena and I don't see things getting better in that sense, still I
find that being a rather small scene is what makes it special and I
wouldn't change it for the trendy Berlin. But then of course I always
have to go there once in a while to get the otherworldly feel...

I enjoyed my visit to hamburg very much and would probably pick it over Berlin
as far as a place to live. The Smallville guys are on point and would provide
enough of a scene for me through their shop and parties.

Re: (313) roll call?

2012-11-28 Thread kent williams
I wasn't here at the very beginning but pretty sure I joined at the
prompting of Aran Parillo, who dropped off several years ago, despite being
the early champion and expert on all things Drexciya.

I think that the quietude of the 313 list stems from a couple of causes:

1. Competition from other social web thingers -- Facebook, Message Boards,
etc.

2. Deaths in the family. Several valued former 313-ers are no longer with
us.

3. Detroit Techno itself. It isn't dead, but the period from 1985-2000 was
a big upheaval, corresponding almost exactly to the rise of the Internet.
There are still people in and around Detroit making music, and even more
around the world who can legitimately claim to be inspired by Detroit, but
the focus and urgency of the early years is no longer there.

4. Aging of the audience. It happens at different points in everyone's
life, but there comes a time when a good night's sleep starts winning out
over standing in an unheated warehouse in the dark, losing your hearing one
kick drum at a time. Juan Atkins turns 50, Kevin Saunderson 48, Derrick
May 49.

Think about it. The Belleville 3 are at the same chronological point in
their careers where the Beach Boys were in the 1990s. Or to put it another
way, in the mid-80s, when Techno was getting going, 30 years prior was
Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Elvis.

The fact is, despite its pervasive influence, it is not a music to which
many 16 and 17-year-olds connect with. Older people aging out of the Techno
tribe are not being replaced by new recruits.

Which is one reason I'm a huge admirer of Mike Huckaby's educational
efforts. He is a living link between the past of Techno and the kids that

It isn't dead, but the period from 1985-2000
was a big upheaval, corresponding almost exactly to the rise of the
Internet. There are still people in and around Detroit making music, and
even more around the world who can legitimately claim to be inspired by
Detroit, but the focus and urgency of the early years is no longer there.

Which is one reason I'm a huge admirer of Mike Huckaby's educational
efforts. He is a living link between the past of Techno and the kids that
 are potentially its future.

Here, mostly lurking, probably heading to Detroit for the festival
next year after defecting to Mutek this year out of curiosity (ugh,
mistake!). Still dream of seeing The Black Dog do a live PA after
going bonkers the first time I heard Spanners, but I'll need more than
a fortnight's notice to make arrangements to get to Sheffield from
Dallas.

But nothing compares to Drexciya and Model 500. Actually, the first
time I heard Juan play Night Drive live, I wept from sheer joy. Same
with Derrick and Strings of Life.

Of course, I've debated hitting up Movement Torino as well - not to
derail this hi everybody check-in, but has anyone here done that
round of the festival? Nothing compares to Detroit, of course; it's
just that like everyone else on this list, I'm getting older, and I
want to cram in as many techno tourist adventures as I can before I go
deaf and my knees wear out. :)

I've been off and on Hyperreal in some way or other since... I'm
guessing 1995 or 96? I subbed to this list a few years back and
haven't regretted it.

*waves to Denise, Frank, Kevin, etc.*

There's a few heads here keeping up the Dallas Techno scene, but it's
literally a handful of married dudes, some Denton college kids
(Cygnus, BetDat, Ynfynyt Scroll), Minto (Down Low) driving back and
forth from Wichita Falls, Gerard Hansen (Convextion) and Wanz Dover
(Blixaboy) busting out the occasional Laptop Deathmatch show.

Me? I'm just a fan, not a musician, DJ or producer. I enjoy dancing;

Re: (313) roll call?

He tells the truth.

Where once I was semi-active, I now lurk. I no longer invest significant
amounts of time, energy and money in music. I now buy nappies, pay a mortgage,
cover household bills and dream of installing a new bathroom on our top-floor.
I know I'm not alone in following this path from 313 back in the mid/late 90's,
and I don't regret it. I'll always love music, but things have changed and I
have other priorities.

Nice to hear so many people on the list.
As for me, I subscribed in the late 90's.
Like it happened some weeks ago with Andrew Green, it's always great to
meet others 313 technotourists subscribers.

I went to the Jeff Mills Axis 20th anniversary party in Paris last week,
and this next friday Derrick May is at the Rex club, so my
Detroit-Techno needs are really fulfil :)

Enjoy,
