Does he have a site for this collection? I have no idea whether some of them are worth money or are mostly just junk. Any more ideas for info on such old recordings anyone (dealers, sites showing prices or info, forums etc.)? How about playing them? My sister recently bought my dad some awful retro radio style music centre with built in turntable off a shopping channel (!) but although it does 78 speed there's absolutely no info on it or in it's manual giving make / model or the same info for the (horrendous looking) cartridge that would help in locating a suitable stylus, if such a thing is available, which I doubt. A better bet might be the BO Beogram 1000 turntable which he has upstairs and can also spin at 78 but the stylus looks a very individual affair (kind of 70s equivalent of an Ortofon Condorde but with the cartridge and stylus one unit plugging in to the arm with 4 pins). Some of the new DJ turtables (Vestax?) spin at 78 - does this mean Ortofon or Stanton do 78 styli for their DJ cartridges? For interest here's a couple of the artists who's records we were looking at, which my dad fondly and (surprisingly to me) credibly by the looks of things remembers going to see in London in the late 1930s / early 40s. RE: (313) late again.
you might want to check out the Record Collector's Guild http://www.recordcollectorsguild.org/ people there should know - sounds like you could have some valuable platters. It all depends on how many were produced. Blues 78s are, of course, worth more generally because there weren't a lot produced and not many survived. Jazz records tended to be produced at a higher rate, especially swing and big band. It was the pop music of the day. Also, depending on where you live they might be worth more. The records don't travel well as they are FRAGILE. Meaning if you're in the US and you have 78s from the UK (and vise versa) you might find people willing to pay more because they don't want to risk shipping overseas. also, condition is an utmost concern - collectors are anal about it (see the movie Ghost World for a funny example) http://www.garlic.com/~tgracyk/assess.htm My parents used to have a good size 78 collection but they were stored very poorly (stacked flat like pancakes in a wood chest) and most have broken. Not to upset since they were mostly pop tunes like Judy Garland and such. Still, I love the old boxy sound of them. I think I fell in love with records music through that collection. Greetings list, I finally got my hands on fabrice's my 4 stars remixed EP. I know it's been out for awhile, but I'm always the last to acquire hot material. I have to say this is prime fl work. The ian o'brien remix does not disappoint either. Just a side note... I enjoyed fabrice's new stuff in the cold dank of my basement. I've had to transport my entire setup from the attic, as we are expecting a new addition to the family. I know that I will have to deal with moisture issues when the climate warms up. What you want is a 10 gallon dehumidifier. Nothing is worse for your records than mold. And don't mess around, it only takes one damp evening in the summer and your records become a garden. Just get a good one and make sure to dump it regularly. Hope it helps a little. RE: (313) late again.
Put it this way, my basement flooded into my record room one year when we had some hurricane runoff. The first night after getting the water out, I'd forgotten some reggae records down there and they were flowers by the morning. I put the dehumer down there after cleaning again and when I've got it on high, I can feel my skin cracking when I stay down there too long. Fruits don't even mold they jusy dry out. It's cool. I've left all kinds down there just to see. So...like, just make sure to get a good one and over shoot your space coverage by half at least. RIP DILLA KKS MWNB -Original Message- From: Thomas D. Re: (313) late again.
We've got a 50 pint (6.25 Gallon) dehumidifier in our basement and it's super dry. There is evidence that the previous owner had some moisture issues and some mold but they had a big closet that I ripped out and got some airflow going on. They work very well. If you get ones with auto humidistat control you can program how much (by percentage) humidity you want to remain in the air (or at what point you want the machine to kick in). Well worth having just for saving your basement from moisture issues. And tomorrow on This Old House... MEK Thomas D. Andrew Hill's album from 2002, Dusk, is a firm favourite of mine - I'm listening to it for about the 200th time as I type. It isn't Marsalis style classic jazz, it isn't noisy art made for Wire readers, it's just ace. Much like Joe Henderson (yes OK, Jurren so what? ;) Andrew Hill just focused on his own musical personality, without caring much for fashion. Re: (313) Late jazz?
On the contemporary jazz tip (sort of) I can highly recommend the new HiM album on Fatcat: http://www.fat-cat.co.uk/?id=14section=2 It's absolutley gorgeous. Dan. That's a good signal that Here-lies-great-music if you ask me. Anyone else got some hot late jazz tips? Dusk: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amguid=CASS70305161434sql=Aexg9keztaq7q
Re: (313) Late jazz?
Some jazz I really like. I posted on Herbie but I'm not sure it came through. So I'll repeat it: Mwandishu, Crossings, and of course the super funky Fat Albert Rotunda are my favorite albums by him. John Zorn's Masada group. It's not exactly jazz but it is definitely amazing. Everything Charles Mingus ever did. Muhal Richard Abrams big band. One of the Chicago guys who has been really adept at combining music rooted in the Afro-American tradition with more experimental sounds. Also along this line, try anything with Roscoe Mitchell, or stuff by the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Stuff by Henry Threadgill, from the 80s through now. This guy is another of those Chicago cats, and some of his compositions are just totally wild. His band Very Very Circus had 2 drummers, two tubas, and two guitars among other things. Not every album is on the same level, but the majority of his stuff is just killer, unlike anything else I have ever heard. I would strongly urge you to check him out. Solo albums of world jazz by Don Cherry (formerly with Ornette Coleman). If you're the adventurous type, try Cecil Taylor, Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, etc. Oh, I would also say that Andrew Hill has always been a great piano player and has matured to create a quite intriguing sound as of late that to me is more interesting than his classic blue note albums.
