Re: Claude Young retirement!?!
According to Claude's reply on Instagram, the article is crap. He's stepping away from DJing and it sounds like he's focusing on composing new music without regard to genre. It's hard to overstate his reputation, especially in Japan and Europe. He's got nothing left to prove, but I expect new surprises from him! Claude Young retirement!?!
Claude Young announced he's done DJing and he's stopped posting to social media. https://ra.co/news/79327 The article says he intends to continue making music but I'm curious what form that will take. I am forever in his debt for the DJ sets I've had the privilege to see live, the fantastic records he's made, and also for the kindness he's shown to me personally. If anyone knows him well enough to communicate with him, maybe pass along some love from me (and I assume, most 313 list subscribers).

Claude Young makes a 'just for Claude' Groove La Chord remix http://youtu.be/nWvBI77cKJY As great as Claude's released tracks are, his recent sets deliver on the promise made by Richie Hawtin's Decks FX business -- He shows how you can make a computer-based set exciting, not by waving your arms or having a big light show, but by making something amazing come out of the speakers.

Hope to see ya there! Bio: Electronic composer, web designer, videographer, sci-fi junkie, apple computer expert world class DJ, these are but a few of the hats worn by the anomaly that is Claude Young Jr. This Detroit native who now resides in Tokyo (Japan) was born the son of legendary WJLB (Detroit) radio personality, station founding member and production wizard Claude Young Sr. After early interest in television production and some experience working as an intern (and later mix show DJ) for several radio programs in the early 90's, CYJ intensified his interest in what he refers to as the art of the DJ. Coached by close friend and mentor Anthony Shake Shakir he became a natural almost literally overnight. His editing production skills in studio (taught to him by his father years of experimentation alone) saw him work on a string of records for both independent and major record labels. Musto Bones, Technasia, Gary Numan, Carl Craig, Joey Beltram, Inner City and 4Hero are but a few of the artist either remixed or edited by Young. He was also cofounder of two of Detroit electronic music's most respected record imprints: Frictional Records (with Anthony Shake Shakir) and 7th City Records (with Dan DBX Bell).

Re: (313) Claude Young Shawn Rudiman live in Pittsburgh
Just the kind of thing I need to see more of... sounds like everyone had a fantastic time. Speaking of Kent having already seen everyone before, I just found Kent's review of when we (of the now defunct Kickdrum crew) brought Rudiman and Zentz and Walker to DC in 2002. www.mail-archive.com/313@hyperreal.org/msg27552.html Back in the stone-age though when the racks of live equipment were piled to the sky. It really makes me smile thinking that ten years later he's still shredding it live at good parties. Some things may change but some things always stay the same. Right on. -Art

I gave it a 13.5 on ten point scale! Having seen shawn play countless times before, as well as claude (not nearly as often) over the years, both artists were in rare form on that night. jw ps. Re: (313) [EVT][Portland] Claude Young - Brian Zentz - The Mitchell Brothers - Sept 3, 2011
I keep hearing great things about the Awakenings festival in Holland with people saying it's not like other festivals and a couple of good things in Croatia (think half of Glasgow went there this year.its the new Barcelona!) but I've not quite got the energy to go and find out for myself. I've always been a small dark room with 100 people in it sort of guy really. Jason On 2 September 2011 21:33, David Powers cybo...@gmail.com wrote: I don't blame him for not wanting to play festivals, those giant festival sets are always the most boring and dumbed down sets that DJ's do--and anyone who knows me knows I like things as deep as possible these days. Financially it would be fantastic, but that would put me in a situation where I'd have to play records I don't want to. I'd much rather play the back rooms and be free. You know, you meet a lot of DJs—the really big ones—and they're kind of characters. I'm the farthest away from a character you can get. When you see Derrick May there is something iconic about the way he carries himself. He's an artist. I'm not really like that. I'm just a tech geek who does music. That's my thing. Re: (313) Somebody posted a Claude Young afterparty here a while back
I would have liked to go to this. But since I'm playing a Live PA at the Tronic Treatment party, that's probably not going to happen! I know that it might not be the kind of techno you all dig, but it should be a fun party (Deetron and Tony Rohr) - and it is in the old Music Institute space! So consider dropping by if you are in town for DEMF... Oh, and that night I will also be celebrating the release of a split vinyl ep, with Detroit's own Punisher, which should be out just in time for the festival. ~David On 5/9/07, Wojtek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: this one? (313) Claude Young Patterns the album
I just picked this up this weekend on a lark and am quite inspired by what I hear. It sounds like a cross between Monobox and old Air Liquide. Stylistically, how do Claude's other albums compare to this one? Oh, and I was surprised to see that this is a 2000 release on DJAX. Are they still around? If so, what are they up to nowadays?

I think the new album from Miss Djax is pretty decent. Not very innovative, but just decent and straight to the point. Did you? I always had lots of respect for Saskia for what she did for the techno scene and above all for the dutch scene but this album was nothing more then a collection of really loud distorted mid-frequencies. That`s what I meant with not very innovative. It is just another release, it doesn`t seem like she was pushing it to the edge. The sounds and structures of the tracks have all been used before. But that doesn`t make it a bad album. Or a good one. Peter On 12/6/05, Klaas-Jan Jongsma [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Did you? I always had lots of respect for Saskia for what she did for the techno scene and above all for the dutch scene but this album was nothing more then a collection of really loud distorted mid-frequencies. (313) [dustv002] Electronic Dissident by Claude Young
Claude Young shows exactly why he's a top-tier techno artist with this fantastic record which could well be the finest record of his career. This tune is such an anthem for us that we can't believe it won't be seen as one of the landmark releases of 2005. For Young has taken the well-worn Metropolis blueprint for techno and injected it with much-needed vigour and emotion. Includes exclusive Black Dog remix. http://www.dustscience.com/Releases/ClaudeYoung-ElectronicDis.php Nick Luscombe (Flo-Motion - Xfm) Wonderful record - haven't heard anything so beautifully deep and layered in ages. Ian O'Brien (Peacefrog) The boy can do no wrong, but I think it's the best thing he's done for a while without a doubt. Luciano (Mental Grrove / Peacefrog / Fabric) Brilliant EP... I like when Claude is digging in this sound. Definitely one of the must have records. Tomaz (Tomaz Filterheadz) Beautiful compositions that will stand the test of time!! Tom Magic Feet (iDJ Magazine) - Single of The Month It's an immense, ambitious track, with long, swirling intro eventually taking on a clattering rhythm and a bassline you could stand a spoon in. Mark EG (M8 Magazine) - Single of The Month Music like this doesn't often come along, but when it does, you need to hear it. Marko Nastic (Recon Warriors, Recycled Loops) Claude's record is up! Hi all, Can anyone tell me the who did the version of the daft punk song on this mix? I think the track is calledstronger faster or something. I'm pretty sure the version on the mix isn't the original although I might be wrong. (313) Claude Young Announcement
Hi :) Last few days i found on web few announcment written by claude young, on which he say that this is his last active season as dj and producer... can anyone thell me is that thrue announcemet or somebody joke.. tx here you have announcement Well friends, after some very long night's thinking this over I have decided to take some time out of the music world for a while. This was not an easy decision and I want to say thanks to all of you for your support over the past years. There is a strong possibility 2004 might be my last year involved in electronic music so if you get the chance to come to any of the shows in the remainder of 2004 please come and enjoy yourselves. When u dedicate your life to something for over a decade and it goes completely off the rails you have to make adjustments or go down with the ship. People have their pre-conceptions and their likes and dislikes, that's fine with me, we are all meant to be free. The scene used to be full of vibrant and creative people but now it's just full of moaners who support artist who don't give a about them. All they are interested in is boosting their own name and increasing their bank accounts. Next time u go to a party and the ticket price is amazingly high for you to see a DJ u cant event speak to before, during or after his set think about what is important to them. Call me stupid but i thought it was only human to engage other human being's was I wrong??? Someone on a post said if claude young wanted to sell out he could have a long time ago but he never did. Before this though another person sent a post to Detroit-Luv saying well im sure he'll make a lot of money charging for the farewell tour. These comments are not the main reason but they are a factor, how much more of my life am I to give only to have my work constantly thrown back in my face in favor of other artist who are only concerned with the bank balance of their account Next time this guys shells out a wad of cash to see some guy mix 40 records together that all sound the same he should ask himself what is really important. I figure my energy is better served helping people. So im considering being a volunteer in a foreign country. Possibly an aid worker or something similar. Anything to help make other peoples lives a little better. Every man has his breaking point and I have been on the road since i left Detroit over 11 years ago, every week. So im taking some time out for once and if i decide to come back it will be under different circumstances. I've had bad management coupled with other setbacks as well so if i do come back ill be handling everything independently with a small group of friends in Glasgow. hope this answers all your questions -- Sudjelujte u Iskon Bonus nagradnom programu i osvajajte nagrade. (313) Claude Young in Mpls (a review)
OK - a quick review before the boss gets into work this morning Claude Young played in Minneapolis on Saturday night the event was free so many people showed up but I get the feeling that most of them showed up because of the no cover on a Saturday night rather than they knew who Claude Young is. The venue is a smallish room upstairs from the larger Quest nightclub (what used to be Prince's Glam Slam club) It's sort of an odd room in that they've tried to make it look like some Spanish or Italian piazza. There is a large fully functioning fountain in the room, a fake tree with a leaves and branches that spread out across the room, etc. The bar is small and there was only one poor bartender having to deal with a very long line of people very early. Anyway, on with the music. The warm-up DJs were insufferable. Mostly hard techno loops without any flair and no skills at mixing the tracks in any interesting fashion. My fellow 313 friends Drew Daugherty and Jason Kenjar will attest to the very poor quality of mixing/djing. Actually, it would be hard to call it real djing. Cutting out the bass for a four count and then bringing it back in was about the most imaginative thing they could do. Boring. After a while even the track selections were getting poor. It was two local jocks tag-teaming for about three hours - and it really felt like you were in the ring with them getting the pile driver the whole time. There was the occasional good tune but it was pretty much dosh, dosh, dosh, dosh, cha, cha, cha, cha, THUD, THUD, THUD, THUD there were people on the dancefloor but out of maybe the dozen that were there were about three who you might describe as dancing. so suffer for three hours we did until Claude came on at midnight. I was very excited to see him as the last time he was here he tore the roof off First Ave nightclub. That was about 5- 6 years ago. First track - I have no idea what it was but it was funky as hell. Couldn't really hear it very well though and sound was a problem for a good part of the night (imo) (seems like they have a big rig but don't EQ it properly and then they proceed to overload it as the night wears on - I do mean wears on) Claude had both decks, CD player, and his laptop. So he's watching the crowd and smiling as this first track plays and people are right away getting down. I have no way of really describing this track in any detail that would allow anyone to ID it but it had a female vocal(s) and funk and soul to spare. Sort of an house/RB track - that's about all I can say. Like I mentioned, the sound quality of the PA wasn't the best. It was loud but not very clear. For the next hour Claude went through a whole array of styles - dropping a rework of Kraftwerk straight off his computer (very very cool track), followed by Aphex Twin's Digeradoo, he got Aztec Mystic's Aguila in there (a very nice moment), and a few other tracks that were familiar but yet to be ID'd. Drew and Jason might have some others they picked out. I was surprised by all he got in just in the first hour - it seemed like we had been dancing longer than that. All was not well though - after suffering the first three hours of looped techno played without skill - for some reason Claude also played quite a number of rather (shrugs shoulders) eh techno tracks. There were too many selections that just weren't really doing it for me. Even I, who put Claude up among the mightiest, had a hard time connecting with the music. Just wasn't feeling a lot of what he was playing. There seemed to be a lack of really funky tracks. He did play some more colder, detached techno styles (in line with the warm-up DJs) - there just wasn't enough of a groove to pull me in before he went deep. It had nothing to do with his cutting, scratching, etc. I think some of it had to do with the mixed crowd - It seemed he was trying to figure out what people wanted and maybe just couldn't quite pin it down. He had his moments and it seemed the crowd reacted best to good tunes that had some progression. We had already had our fill of being pummeled by techno loops - my opinion is the crowd wanted a bit of a groove or melody. Anyway, his skills are amazing. He cuts the records like a hot knife through butter. Elbows, nose, and cheeks, were used extensively and there was a fantastic moment when he went ballistic on the mixer - using his mouth and nose to crossfade and then came back up and proceeded to chop up the two tracks like mincemeat. He was having fun and the crowd let him know they appreciated him. I do recommend the owners of that mixer to bring it in for repairs after this night. So, all-in-all it wasn't a bad night. Claude's technical skills are still amazing. I'd like to think some of the selections were due to trying to please everyone so I won't come down on him for that. He tried to get everyone into it and I give him credit for that. He's still one of my favorites because he always trys to keep it interesting

claude personally posted on Detroitluv.com that he was not playing the festival last week (I can't confirm it was definately Claude, but people i trust say it was). i'd argue that the causal direction is the other way around - house (and indeed a lot of black american music) came from a religious background. there wasn't such a great difference between the music i heard on sunday morning walking around harlem and the music i heard on sunday afternoon downtown at body and soul. james www.jbucknell.com Cobert, Gwendal [EMAIL PROTECTED] dvisors.com To 313@hyperreal.org 14/04/04 11:25 AM cc Subject RE: (313) TP - was Re: (313) That Friday Question/Claude Young Mixes OK, thanks to all who gave me pointers ! i have respect and love for terrence. but in my opinion, there is a difference between starting a conversation with someone about their beliefs and receiving a mass email demonizing the lifestyle of many people on the mailing list. ani : -Original Message- : From: Phonopsia [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] : Sent: Thursday, April 08, 2004 2:38 PM : To: 313@hyperreal.org : Subject: (313) TP - was Re: (313) That Friday Question/Claude : Young Mixes : : : - Original Message - : From: DelCimmuto [EMAIL PROTECTED] : To: ed612313 [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; : David Powers [EMAIL PROTECTED] : Cc: 313 List 313@hyperreal.org : Sent: Wednesday, April 07, 2004 3:25 AM : Subject: Re: (313) That Friday Question/Claude Young Mixes : : : speaking of which, wasn't TP calling it quits at the end of 2002 or : 2003? : : : To summarize briefly, he was going to retire for religious : reasons - issues with the rave scene (and more), but then : opted to adjust his musical policy and continue to do things : on terms he could feel comfortable with.
