(313) new purpose maker

2003-08-06 Thread alex . bond
had another listen to this last night.
just wanted to say its recommended!

nice deep techno, nothing too clever, just nice.

A side is the one for me (the reprise of changes of life is OK, but the
a-side is the killer)

Groovetech has it listed with samples for each track.
I like what I heard, I think I might pick up a copy
next time I'm out.

'Lo again,

I really do enjoy the new PM, and I love Mills' output in general (please no
flames!)
However:

The one thing that really gets me going though is the quality of the vinyl it
is pressed on. Is it me, or is the axis/pm vinyl some of the thinnest vinyl on
earth? I've given up mail ordering mills, as inevetably it ends up at my
placed warped and barely playable. I find it quite frustrating. Am I just
being a bitch, or do other people find this to be the case as well?

Hey,

I know what you're saying, but I've always put this down to shipping /
storage conditions as opposed to poor pressing. The vinyl hasn't struck me
as particularly thin - just bent on occasion.

I'm gonna keep my opinions of the new PM to myself, as I've been off the
list for a bit so I don't know if this subject has been discussed before - I
don't wanna be making loud noises in avalanche territory.

...the Euro vinyl I've gotten lately is much heavier ! Not to
mention louder. On a couple of new records I've bought, the midrange is so
high it blew me across the room like Marty McFly's atomic guitar. When the
mids are so busy on my own home set-up, imagine how it would sound on a
system; like nails on a blackboard. Thank God for EQ.

-That's typical british EQ:ing for you (and I'm not talking about the much
raved british EQ in mixers here). When you listen long periods of
U.S.-vinyl only, your ear gets used to that balanced sound. Bass is heavy,
mid is delicious and the highs are clear and pleasent to the ear. Then you
play something like early Rephlex-records or some typical euro record: IT'S
A HEAVY-METAL ATTACK! No bass in a real sense, but way too loud mids.

You don't master a dance record the way you master a rock record, if you
know what you're doing...

Ironically, bunch of U.S. pressing plants advertise that they can make
european style EQ to your records... Yeah right :)

If the loud sound on European records is nothing but excessive mid-range,
then it's pretty much useless if you have to EQ it down when listened at
high volumes.
It's the midrange-frequencies that destroy your hearing, remember that kids
(and that's why Rock-musicians are the way they are ;)).

New Purpose Maker

2000-05-03 Thread Stewart Moroney
Not sure who asked for info on the new Mills ep, haven't seen anyone else's
review so here is my take on it.

Pm-10 Circus ep

2 long (for purpose maker) mixes of the same track both featuring a sample
from Earth People's Dance (Bonus Beats) and the usual samba drums and
whistles ect. The A side The Greatest Show on Earth Mix (my favorite) is
on a more tribal vibe with a spidery synth part similar to scenario on the
More Drama ep. The second mix The Grand Finale Mix is not as frantic,
with extra samba drums and a different bassline.

I'm surpised no one else has mentioned this yet, is it cause everyone just
buys these without listening? Or does no one talk about them cause they
all sound the same now ;)

For a long time on this list it was Jeff Mills overload ! I guess people
figure that everything that could be discussed about Jeff *has* been
discussed.

He was cool enough to send me a package, though, Circus included. I'm all
off into rocking doubles of Call of the Wild, though. The absolute shit.
