whatever you do, don't forget Parade - much underrated, despite sounding a
little less sure of itself than his other albums and being the accompaniment
to a piss-poor film, for me it's still prince's most adventurous work - and
at the very least it's got Kiss and Sometimes It Snows In April on it.

I agree. Parade's a pretty unique sounding album, maybe a bit poppier than some
of his other stuff, but cool none the less. Albums aside though and the track
that will always do it for me is 'Soft and Wet'. If I ever hear this dropped in
a club I wont be responsible for the embarrasing funky moves I'm likley to
start throwing!

The Black Album is the easiest thing in the world to get.
Impress me by saying that you have the album he did with Kim Basinger!!! ;)
I gave mine away to someone who is a bigger fan than I... of P, not Kim.
They reckoned it was a fake, I am not so sure! Or, have you ever heard the
Carmen Electra album on Paisley Park. He, he, he! It was actually OK!
I used to write for a Prince fanzine and the fans' pick was always Sign Of
The Times - or SOTT - as we called it.
He did a bangin' 'techno' song in Melb with Diamond Pearl on vox circa 92
that I have somewhere too.
Also anything he did with Madhouse is a must-get.
All of Sheila E's albums...
Vanity 6 album.
My personal fave P albums:
SOTT
Love Sexy
1999

Associate albums like Ingrid Chavez's neo-soul album on Paisley Park (she
has since married Japan's David Sylvian, strange!) are always awesome too. I
used to buy ANY album with a P song. I wish he would produce and write for
some of the new artists today. His ballads were always the best! A lot of
today's producers can't write decent ballads. This is because they create
beats, come up with grooves, but a ballad needs a strong melody and you
can't lift a sample for that.

If you ask anyone their fave P album it's like star signs too. ;) You can
tell a lot about someone from their fave Prince LP.

FYI I once asked D May his and it is 1999, and Green Velvet's is Purple
Rain.

If you love the Parade album check out Common's latest, Electric Circus. It
has the same psychedelic vibe! I LOVE it!!! Prince even guests.

It was much easier to get the bootlegs in the late 80s or early 90s, esp in
Europe.
We used to trade tapes a lot, the fans, that's what I mainly did. It was
ace, I had friends all over the world. Having pen pals in MPLS or Detroit or
London was ultra cool, as these were P's cities. It was a status thing! ;)
The whole subculture created amazing friendships, transcending race,
nationality, gender...
There was always a question how the studio material leaked out - during the
Warner fall-out some speculated that P was intentionally leaking stuff. I am
not sure. Later Prince became very sensitive about the bootlegging -
understandably - and there was a lawsuit with the Swedish mag Uptown over
their bootleg guides.
I think that most fans would buy the official and the bootleg stuff, so
there was no loss there, but I guess an artist wants to control what is out
there, not have demos circulating. I totally appreciate that.
The Australian 'zine was careful not to cover bootlegs. I think that's why
Paisley Park gave us tacit support. We saw a copy of our 'zine, 7, in a
Prince video and couldn't believe our eyes!
I think Uptown is still extant so if you're serious fan, maybe look it up on
the 'Web.

They were called his Camille songs. Some came out on regular releases, some
were b-sides, others on bootlegs. They have always been my favorite because
they tend to more electronic. The most popular and probably the best out of
all them were Erotic City
. And Then If I was your Girlfriend.

Dream factory is an Awesome bootleg but the songs on it are different
depending on where and who you get it from. I prefer the one with only the
camille songs on it. Hit me up with your mailing addy and I can compile you
a Camille C.D.

First of all sorry about the chain of post but I get the 313 list at work
and obviously I miss everything thats posted on the weekends. Plus people
are posting on the one mainstream artist that probably influences my
electronic music the most, even though it may not sound like it. :) I'm
enjoying this.

As for the black Album, Well the bootleg was WIDELY available in america. Me
and most of my friends had at least the cassette version back it 87' 88'.
And My girlfriend at the time bought what appears to be a non-Bootlegg
Vinyl copy of it for me in D.C. and she isn't even a fan. Needless to say I
have that one sealed up and vaulted away. Now it's available for sale of
course.

But I do agree it's not a GOOD album at all. Lovesexy was way better and I'm
glad he didn't release it.

Side note:
The one thing I've always envied to this day about you guys in Europe was
the chance to experience the Sign O the Times Tour. One of the best. Did Any
of you guys actually go that tour?

Brent Kirkwood wrote:

Interesting just how many Prince fans there are on the list. The connection
between Prince and Detroit techno is squarely in the what they were listening
to when they weren't listening to each other category, so I'm not sure how
on-topic it is, but for what it's worth...

Just about every Prince album and bootleg released up to the mid-1990s has its
moments where he (plus backing band The Revolution or New Power Generation,
when applicable) was at the top of his form. Usually there are a couple of
songs that were great and were hits, and a couple that should have been, and
some mediocre filler.

There's also a fair amount of progression from album to album, so you can't
really find a single disc that serves as an introduction to all of his styles
or that is superior to all others. In the mid-1990s and beyond, his music
became more ballad-oriented, less adventurous and hardly as fun as before...
still of high quality, just not all that interesting, IMHO, and the
recommendations given on here already seem to concur, by omission.

As you might expect, the official greatest hits collections contain the safest
of the tracks that charted, some of which sound out of place when separated
from the original albums. IMHO they should be avoided unless you're looking
for a gift for a nostalgic family member. But, there was a B-sides disc that
is worth having. Your best bet, though, is to find some nutty fan to make a
compilation for you, then research the albums the material came from.. or
just take the plunge and start buying.

Also, it wasn't mentioned, but the 12 singles he released in the 1980s often
had extended versions (full re-recordings, not just remixes) and B-sides that
were essential. The long version of Raspberry Beret, the 20 minute version
of America, the long mix of U Got The Look, etc...

The withdrawn Black Album is raw but has the comical Bob George and the
frenetic live jazz-funk jam 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton, which I can't
imagine not putting on a *real* best-of compilation.

I guess like everyone else I'd recommend Sign O The Times, but it's not jam
packed with hits. It's just a really solid album from a time when he was at
the top of his game. I thought Around The World In A Day was more enjoyable. I
don't really disagree with any of the recommendations made... they're all good
albums. If you want stuff that's dancey you should stick to Dirty Mind,
Controversy, 1999, and Purple Rain.

Despite that the majority (but hey majority rules, majority sucks right :-)
of this list doesn't like me
let me do a good deed.

For all Prince fans out of there,
if you look for some boos, check at
http://www.funkycity.fr.st/
Till last October all the boots were on the site,
then Prince has started to sue
some sites.so now the boos are posted on the site on demand
and only during the week-end.
You may also want to contact him
he speaks English.
The site is in French so this how it works:

From the menu mes boots you will see the entire list of the bootlegs
which are available from the guy who runs the site.
From the download menu at the moment you can download
the late night show part 1/2/3.

If you are into what they call contemporary jazz,
a la Carl Craig, if you had enjoyed Detroit experiment...
If you are already excited by the project of Carl Craig's collaboration with
Alice Coltrane
I strongly recommend you to download the Xenophobia series,
incredible new turning point from the Man, particularly on Vol.2,
you will have a big surprise
I was not attended his Paris concert (the guy got it...) last year
but I managed to get a $100 place for his after show.
2h15 of show during the second part of his Paris after show,
he went into techno... was frenzy rather long and very impressive,
accompanied by Blackwell and brass instruments.
The French guy got it, the sound is not excellent, but hey.

Oh, and BTW I downloaded from the same site
Prince birthday gig at Detroit Cobo Hall (07/06/86)

Could someone confirms that the Jam rehearsal boot,
has been from Detroit, 1984 ? I will appreciated.

And please do not all fall on this French guy at the same time:-)

Someone else dreams about a collaboration between Prince and KDJ ???

Oh god where to start, pretty subjective:

--Sign O' The Times 2xLP- probably all around best display of talent, he
plays every instrument on every song 'cept for one live track done w/
The Revolution... amazing. I like this review too
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amguid=CASS70305141450sql=A31820r
8ac489

--Dirty Mind (1980!) - Synth work on here and all around funkiness is
electrifying

I like 1999 a lot too - Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)

--Purple Rain - a masterpiece in it's own right
--Around the World in a Day - more conceptual, still great songs, deeper
and less pop polish in some ways, though still had some hit singles too.
I've always had a soft spot for Pop Life

There are some cool songs on Prince LP and For You, both completed
in late 70's. but don't start there unless you get to be a real fan ;)

peace,
Matt MacQueen

Crystal Ball is a crazy compilation (I think mine is 5xCDs?) that was
boot only for awhile, then I think Prince just started selling it
himself. (?) It's material around the time of Sign O' The Times and
others. Some are brilliant outtakes that never made it onto albums!!!
Some is filler though.

There is also a recent Live thing one night alone that I have heard
good things about, the tracklist is pretty incredible (lots of old
stuff) but I haven't heard it yet

There are a zillion bootlegs though, many live ones collected/traded by
