Ghostly brings back 'Techno Rebels' T-shirts for Dan Sicko scholarship

Posted By Lee DeVito on Wed, May 20, 2015 at 1:48 PM

Among the many artifacts on display at Exhibit 3000 — Underground
Resistance's secret techno museum in Detroit — is a book enclosed in
a glass case called Techno Rebels: The Renegades of Electronic Funk
by journalist Dan Sicko. Our tour guide for the day gave the book
props, saying he felt it accurately captured the essence and told the
story of Detroit techno in a way few other books have.

Sicko died in 2011 at the age of 42, having battled ocular melanoma
since being diagnosed in 2008. Shortly after, Ghostly adapted his
book title into a Detroit Renegade of Electronic Funk limited run
T-shirt with all proceeds going to help raise money for Sicko's
 family.

Fours years later, the Detroit Sound Conservancy has launched a
campaign to create a special music journalism scholarship in Sicko's
name, and Ghostly is bringing back the T-shirt to help raise funds.
The shirt is now offered in black and indigo, and proceeds from all
online sales will go directly to DSC.

Head over to Ghostly's store to grab one, or WSU Press to pick up a
copy of the book. Check out MT's original review of the book here.

You do get a glimpse of Minx, briefly. Not that she doesn't deserve
recognition, but in terms of the video as a whole she's the person
featured least likely to be a draw for the Moby fans.

Paxahau are trying to run this as a going concern, and when your
concern is how many bracelets you sell, you are going to try and
feature people who might have some appeal beyond the rabid techno
fans, like the people on this mailing list. And in case you haven't
noticed, as a cohort, 313 listers are aging out of the festival-going
age group. What percentage of people under 25 even know what an
E-Mail list is? We are not the people for whom Paxahau is working so
hard to make a festival.

We could have a perfect DEMF for the 313 list, but there's only 442 of
us (I just counted), and even if we could count on the general
awesomeness of any festival WE curated drawing 20 times that many
people, it wouldn't begin to pay for itself. Plus even if the lineup
was generated by the 313 list, there'd still be all sorts of hating
going on about it.

If you're going to the festival, look at the afterparties, too. Maybe
it's just me but there are more opportunities to see really fantastic
lineups for dirt cheap than ever before. And you can see Omar-S
during the day at a rooftop party!

Well said Kent.

I'm really excited about a lot of the afterparties. And even though
there is a lot of silliness booked for the festival every year, there
are a lot of great musicians that I can't wait to see perform. The
fact that Al Ester and Stacey Hale are spinning, even though they are
not producers, is pretty cool. They have been taking care of
Detroit's electronic music scene for decades. Minx is playing the
main stage - in the afternoon - but it's the main stage! All the
Submerge people playing, I'll be excited to see them too. And the
electrobounce/Starski Clutch business should be great as usual.

Obviously that promo video is not meant for us or for most
Detroiters. Paxahau is trying to keep this festival going, and even
though they are not putting on a Detroit music festival and they
don't do a good job in getting Detroit residents to attend,
particularly young people, this festival is still happening here and I
think that's a good thing. It would be so fabulous if it really was a
festival that was about Detroit music and that drew a larger local and
African American crowd. I would love to know if the festival planners
actually have conversations about these issues when they plan the
festival. I wonder if they debate whether or not to extend a discount
or free entry to Detroit residents. I wonder if they really think
Moby is the shit. I wonder if they really are big fans of Benny
Benassi.

I think it's way more complicated than just Paxahau is racist or
they are just a bunch of guys from the suburbs who don't care about
Detroit.

It's not a big secret that the daytime main stage slots are actually
the booby prizes of the festival. It can be rainy, or hot, or both,
and the crowd seems to not be much into it until the sun starts going
down.

I wonder if they really think Moby is the shit.  I wonder if they really are
 big fans of Benny
 Benassi.

I think when you promote shows for a living your standards are a
little different. You want to make money -- not just greed at work,
but also the 'pinball' part of the job -- if you win you get to keep
playing. You want to work with people who are professional, and not a
pain in the ass. Benny and Rich are successful professionals who are
guaranteed draws.

And whatever you might think about their music, or whether they should
be headlining at DEMF, it's clear to me that they both were thrilled
to be there. You might think they're soulless hacks, but they're not
dumb and they know what Detroit means to dance music. In a sense,
Moby and Benny need Detroit a hell of a lot more than Detroit needs
them.

I think it's way more complicated than just Paxahau is racist or
they are just a bunch of guys from the suburbs who don't care about
 Detroit.

While I might quibble with some of Paxahau's decisions artistically, I
think it's grossly unfair to talk sh1t about their motivations.
Paxahau would be just fine without the festival -- in fact
financially, they might actually be better off not doing it. Paxahau
does the festival because they want the festival to continue, because
they believe in it's importance to Detroit, and because doing a
festival of this scale successfully is a huge accomplishment.

I'd worry a lot more about that if I thought the stuff we prattle on

because I know you both read my blog. I just wanted to point out two
things

1) I asked the question IS Paxahau racist?, I didn't claim that they
were, necessarily. I am really really glad that the festival is still
going on, and Paxahau is doing a great job.
2) The dramatic change in the percentage of black performers to white
performers between 05 and 06 is a fact. Whether or not that was a
conscious decision on Paxahau's part is clearly unknown. But the
facts are the facts, the festival got a lot whiter when white people
were given control of it. And I think that's a shame, and I don't see
what's wrong with pointing it out.

2009-05-07 Thread kent williams
Carole Marvin being white, actually, was neither here nor there.
That's a whole long crazy story, which you've probably heard most of.
It started out the first year she was content to have Carl be Artistic
director, and she was content to leverage her experience with the Jazz
Festival to help put something together on the Plaza. At some point,
though, she kind of lost the plot, and fired Craig, I guess because
she felt like the festival was 'hers.' Unfortunately she'd fired a
massively popular figure locally and internationally, and came off
looking pretty Lady Macbeth. She put on the festival in 2002 with a
group of people who traditionally did not get along with the 'Detroit
Inner Circle' so well, and ... well I'm sure you can read up on it.

She still owns the trademark on DEMF as far as I know. I feel kind of
sorry for her because she went from hero to villain in Detroit, and I
don't know if she ever quite figured out why.

You should try and talk to Alan Oldham some time. He lives in Chicago
now. Whatever you hear in Detroit he's the contrarian. He's a great
guy, but whatever someone else in Detroit tells you is white, he'll
tell you it's black.

I'm out this year. I've only missed a couple of festivals so this is
not my first choice. Looks like a decent lineup (with the usual
nonsense of course).

Got laid off recently so money is tight. Not a lot of room for
architects in Chicago at the moment what with the housing market
completely flushed down the toilet. I should make it next year no
sweat, though.

Party hard for us that can't make it!

I am not.

It really hurts me to not go too.

My reasons: combination of each/all of my core group of 5 friends who
we had shared hotels/flights from every US region/etc are saying no.
One is going to Spain (for some shwechno festival - lame), one is in
law school, and the rest feel like they've seen enough for this year
(whatever that means).

For me it's like a pilgrimage, and maybe I will book a last minute
flight just to see 6 hours of the festival, but I somewhat doubt it.

Reason 2, I am doing a professional exam a week following the Festival.

That's my story for now.

Ooh, I've been watching this thread, thinking OK, it'd be nice to get one
of these at some point when it's sorted what's happening. But not really
thinking I'd chime in as I'm not going DEMF (and am busy listening to clips

But I'm liking these a lot. In fact I was about to say I like the 2 sided
map one so much I want to order one now even if other people don't and it
costs me £££ to have a one off printed. Then I realise Manchester isn't on
there. Shame on you Todd Sines! (goes off whistling Guy Called Gerald and

all are PDFs - directory browsing allowed so you can [control / right
click to] save if you must.

the start - simple, effective, following the rules. the IM bubble.
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts01_bubble.pdf

next up - where it comes from.. and where it goes to. [who wants to be
 listed?] http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_1sided.pdf

third - an alt color combo [yes, I am gunning for 2 colors, Kent], and
 a wrap-around screen
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapF.pdf
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapB.pdf

why not- 3d text in simulating the Ren Cen [technically, 1 color]
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts03_rencen313D.pdf

the reality of it all - the beautiful decay of a glossy, yet decrepit
 city known as Detroit.
 http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts03_rencen313photo.pdf

Not one is by any means to be considered finshed. . More like
 sketches for future discussion.

The nice thing about a 2 color shirt is that someone might actually
buy them from you. :o then we can all git rich, biaaatch! Like Dave
 Chappelle.

Speaking of Dave Chappelle, I have a contact in Dayton, OH who has the
ability to do mutli-color screened T's - they did a pretty cool job
with making t-shirts + hats for the Release show back in December. And
they sold for less than $11 / shirt.

2008-02-28 Thread Stoddard, Kamal

Okay, so someone said the more the merrier, so I'll post up a less
technical looking (though a bit du jour I admit) option. It's a free
font, my own script and a phrase that I think captures both the attitude
and OT nature of the list at once (depending on whether you read it with
or without the pause).
Of course that's the artsy way of saying that I was laughing at the
phrase in my head as I read the threads and thought, I should put that
on a shirt. So I opened illustrator and there it is.

sure wish I could get JT to do a line drawing of like Kenny or mad mike
to go on it. That would be sick. Or maybe too much. Whatevs though.

RE: (313) 313 list T Shirts for DEMF? ideas

2008-02-28 Thread Stoddard, Kamal
I was placing the list addy square across the front chest, which should
put the other text block under your left tit/teat/pec. I like the font,
and probably won't change anything much unless something really makes
stupidly obvious sense to me. The real reason I did this one, was
because I saw too much thought going into the rest. So consequentially,
I won't think much further than I've gone with it (plus I like it). If
you have a change, feel free to hook it up though *cough*$tinki*cough*.
It'd be interesting to see what comes back. I still wanna see Todd's
though. He's really gd.

It may look a little bitted out at first (the hosting company's

(313) T Shirts: Let a hundred flowers bloom

2008-02-28 Thread kent williams
I am going to print up Martin's design. I'll ask my printer friend
about US Made/Fair Trade shirts as opposed to whatever he normally
uses. My question is this: will people pay twice as much for US
Made/Fair Trade? Please ask off-list -- we've been doing too much
Shirt-talking and not enough techno talking.

This doesn't mean this is the 'official design' -- it just means it's
the design I like, and the one I'll pay to have printed. Anyone else
who wants to can print whatever they want, or put the design on Cafe
Press, or whatever.

I would actually buy a shirt if it had a design along these lines on
 it!
I like the blocky aesthetic of it. I especially like that I had to
look at if for a while to make out the 313 lettering.

That said, Frank, I think the design could stand some tweaking because
it appears, to me at least, that shapes spell out AE, which I guess
could make it double as an Autechre t-shirt (which is also fine with
me). I think the shapes need to appear to spell something more
Detroit-techno related, or the numbers themselves need to look a little
  more evocative of numbers.

Like I said, if you make shirts with this or a comparable design and
 you
keep the price reasonable, I'll buy one.

(313) T Shirts

First off I think Martin's design is winning, as I've not seen another
besides Frank's. Sorry Frank!

Second, I will get some printed and bring to the festival and sell
them to whomever at cost. I dont have a problem mailing some out to
people who won't be there. Let me find out the actual cost before you
E-mail me.

Third, I think Martin is willing to print a bunch for 313'ers in the
EU who won't be in Detroit.

Sound like a plan?

Yeah Tom's design is cool, but I can't wear anything that says 'fvck'
to work, and it wasn't 313 list-specific. If DTM printed some of
those, it would sell at the festival ;-)

And DTM and DMT are very different things.
