There's really no need for Catalina in my opinion. No big improvements, lots
more headaches...

The phrase macOS's Vista is pretty appropriate... :)

High Sierra or Mojave?

2019-12-10 Thread Doug Hall via 4D_Tech
I'm upgrading my 4D structure from 4D v15 to v17, to gain 64 bit
compatibility on the client side with new Apple hardware. Question: Should
I upgrade a late 2014 Mac Mini w/16GB Ram, running Sierra (10.12.6) to High
Sierra or Mojave? I'm also using Homebrew on a Web Client machine I'm
using, that shares the same specs as this 4D Server machine. I want to stay
relatively close to the latest OS, but I'm a bit weary of the security
measures Apple is imposing on Mojave/Catalina.

Recommendations?

Re: Mojave

2018-12-04 Thread Jim Hays via 4D_Tech
We are creating various graphics using a combination of SVG, 4D HTML Tags,
and the Canvas plugin.

The SVG was originally created with Sketch on the Mac, then added HTML tags
and simplified the SVG.
We dynamically size and add text, then convert to a picture to be displayed
by Canvas.

We're only concerned about 32bit 4D for now - next year we will work on a
64bit client.
Also, we are 95% Windows, but needed a working Mac client.
We haven't investigated why some things work, and some don't - we have what
we need for now.

Good graphics - 32 bit 17HF3:

ACI0098954Issues with images badly rendered in 4D on macOS 10.14.x (Mojave).

Not sure what a DMS folder is, but does one still have access to and

Perhaps your code should be implemented just as a normal practice

4D Mojave full disk access

2018-12-03 Thread ADeeg via 4D_Tech
Hi,

if your app needs full disk access an macOS 10.14.x Mojave and newer, then
the users have to grant the access for your 4D application.

I use this to check the access privileges:

C_TEXT($in;$out;$err;$path)
If ((<>SystemVersion="Mac 10.14") | (<>SystemVersion="Mac 10.15") |

Canon,
I haven't had any issues running v17 on Mojave. I'm not really doing
anything with v16 anymore so can't speak to that. v15 is mostly OK except
for issues with the web area.

Mojave

2018-11-30 Thread Cannon Smith via 4D_Tech
I don’t believe 4D has released a version that is fully compatible with Mojave,
unless I missed an announcement. But I’m getting outside pressure to upgrade
from Sierra to Mojave and may have to do it anyway. From what I’ve heard, v17
seems to work good enough for development at least in Mojave, but my main
concern is v16r6. I’ll still need to do some development and building in that
version for a couple months. Is anyone using that version in Mojave and could
comment on how well it is working? (Comments about v17 in Mojave are also
welcome.)

Thanks!

Re: TAOW (Mojave and CREATE THUMBNAIL)

2018-11-28 Thread Keisuke Miyako via 4D_Tech
TAOW is a support portal.

of course, a large portion of all support cases has an underlying bug,
but still, the primary objective there is to offer support.

partners who open a support case on TAOW,
has the advantage of communicating with a 4D member of staff.
the bug is prioritised because there is a support case attached.

---

now this is controversial,
but I really think "searching for an existing bug" is never going to work.

I happen to read every single bug report submitted every day,
but that is the only reason I know what is happening in 4D.

it is impossible to find a bug you do not know based on a combination of
semantic key phrases,
because reports contain false assumptions all the time and the description is
constantly updated.
also, it can be written in any language.

most of the time I search my emails using some identifier that has nothing to
do with the bug itself,
I can pretty much find it effectively but only because I am already familiar
with the context of that bug.

you can only look for "known knowns".

Sorry - haven't been reading the NUG for a couple of weeks -- did you
ever solve this issue?

I had something very similar a few months back with v16 and a client who
had upgraded his machine to High Sierra -- suddenly the app stopped
working in a very similar way.

>From memory we had to recompile the app to 64-bit because the machine
was running with an SSD (instead of a standard hard disk), and when the
OS update was installed it converted the file system on the SSD to Apple

and we were getting 'Can't open database "DatabaseName.4DC"' errors.

LAUNCH EXTERNAL PROCESS, v15, on MacOS Mojave

2018-11-19 Thread Two Way Communications via 4D_Tech
A customer of mine recently upgraded his MacBook Pro to MacOS Mojave.

He is running a stand-alone 4D app, compiled with 4D v15.4. This app has been
installed in the ‘Applications’ folder, which is not inside the
/Users/Username/ folder, but in Macintosh HD/Applications.

Now, in the application, I allow the user to open documents (pdf, .docx, .jpg
etc) using the document's native application.
In order to do that, I use LAUNCH EXTERNAL PROCESS.

This worked perfectly until now. Now, In Mojave, it takes at least 30 seconds
to open a pdf document. (in High Sierra, this was < 1 second)

The syntax I use is:

LAUNCH EXTERNAL PROCESS($command;$IN;$OUT;$ERROR)

where:

$command = “open
/Applications//Xpert_PRO/XPP_DOSSIER_FOLDER/DOS_Le18000142/MyPDFdocument.pdf”
$IN = “”
$OUT = “”
$ERROR = “”

Has anyone else experienced this? Do I need to change the command in LEP?
Would it help if my customer moves the app to the folder ‘/Users / UserName /
Applications’ ?

Since I don’t have Mojave installed on my Mac yet, I can’t actually test it. In
fact, I don’t want to upgrade yet because I need to support 4D v15…

Re: Mojave, dark mode and v17

Yes, you can set up colours for dark mode in the editor. Dark mode doesn’t
affect the application windows, though. I expect they too can be faked, but
these are things that an application which is configured to run under Mojave
should do automatically when the appearance mode is changed.

Maybe v18.

I went through the 4D preferences for Methods Styles and colors and set up a
Dark Theme set of colors.

The only thing is that 4D does not allow me to change the Highlight color, so
the system applies a light colored highlight to light text on a black
background unless I go to System preferences and change the highlight color.

I’m slightly surprised there’s been no response to this from anyone at 4D. Dark
mode is a pleasant environment in which to write code and it’s curious that 4D
seems not to support it.

Re: Mac Mojave and v17?

2018-11-09 Thread Randy Jaynes via 4D_Tech
4D (v17 and all the way back to v13.5) is having some issues with an internal
MacOS drawing routine that is causing funkiness in:
1) ALP plugin drawing vertical text, the separator lines get a little
“squiggle” to them
2) ALP drawing checkboxes in a boolean column
3) SOME, not all, pictures displayed in the Toolbox Resources/Images
viewer don’t get drawn properly in the toolbox or on forms

I’ve already submitted a bug with 4D tech support related to this.

The 2 ALP issues are something tied to an internal plugin call, so it’s out of
their hands…they have to wait for 4D to fix it.

This drawing issue appeared in the later versions of Mojave beta, about 2 weeks
before the official release.

It’s definitely something changed in MacOS that 4D has been using internally
for many years.

Hi,

Anyone have any experience with this? I just picked up one of the new
6 core Mac Minis with 32GB of RAM. Just wondering if anyone is aware
of any gotcha's or issues. I'll be running 64bit v17 apps and one v17
32bit app.

You need to check permissions all the way up the chain. Try putting data
file in a shared folder. Also you need to check more than just data file,
but all (index, etc.

RE: 4D v16.4 Built database won't open in Mojave

2018-11-06 Thread David Ringsmuth via 4D_Tech
Walt,

The first thing that came to me was that it seems like a permissions problem.

If you can figure out the path the data file writing, try a variety of
permissions settings for that location, file, user, application….

On this topic, Stackoverflow may help more than this nug.

Subject: 4D v16.4 Built database won't open in Mojave

Folks,

I have built a stand-alone Application v16.4 database on a Mac OS machine
running High Sierra (10.13.6).

I successfully create an empty datafile and run it on the same High Sierra
(10.13.6) machine.

I transfer the entire stand-alone built database to a laptop running Mojave
(10.14).

When opening that database, I get the following error: ‘You cannot open this
database because the data file (or one of its segments) is locked.’ with an OK
button.

Click OK.

Get a runtime error showing:

Error

Can't open database “DatabaseName.4DC".

Error code: -10509
Can't open database "DatabaseName.4DC".
component: '4DRT'
task -1, name: 'Application process’

When I check the permissions on that file, it is read/write.

Anyone getting a built stand-alone Application for v16.4 to run in Mojave?

Thanks,
Walt

In v16 64-bit, I’ve seen a few forms with broken button images, that may be
related to picture conversion, although I thought I had fixed them all *. I
haven’t used the structure on Mojave with v16 32-bit. So if you use the 64-bit
v17, you may be able to access those form without crashing, although the
pictures won’t load.

* I also deleted a couple sets of buttons that were duplicated, so it might be
related to that too.

I have noticed that parts of the method and form editor windows flash when
dragged in Mojave.

Re: 4D v17 & macOS Mojave beta

2018-10-25 Thread JOHN BAUGHMAN via 4D_Tech
One of my client’s decided to upgrade a computer to Mojave and reported that 4D
was creating.

I think I have narrowed down the problem at least for my application. It looks
like any form that has static pictures or maybe even picture buttons causes 4D
to crash both in the design environment as soon as you select it in the
Explorer as well as when the form is opened during run time.

If I go through all my forms in the design environment, the only ones that
crash 4D have at least one picture in it.

This is 4D 16R6 32bit interpreted. I have not taken the time yet to convert all
my pictures in this database for compatibility
With 64bit 4D. Was waiting until I was ready to convert to 64bit. I suspect
this may the the root of the problem.

I also suspect this is the reason another thread reported crashes while trying
to compile.

I would be interested to here from those that are running on Mojave
successfully if they have any forms with pictures in their forms that have not
been made 64bit compatible.

2018-10-20 Thread JOHN BAUGHMAN via 4D_Tech
Kirk,

I highly recommend Oracle VirtualBox it’s FREE and I have found it far
easier to setup and maintain than either VMWAre or Parallels. Oracle does a
great job of keeping it updated. Just had an update this morning.

I am currently running Windows 2008 Server 32bit and 64bit, Windows 7
and Windows 10. Passing files between the Mac the VMs is seamless and running
4D Client/Server in any combination between multiple VMs and the Mac works
flawlessly.

I can’t say enough about how good and reliable it is. None of the never
ending hassles I had furs with Parallels then VMWare.

Re: Mac OS 10.14 Mojave and 4D 15

2018-10-20 Thread Kirk Brooks via 4D_Tech
Milan,
I really haven't good luck attempting to use VMWare and am not particularly
moved to buy Parallels when I had all the parts laying around to come up
with a perfectly good solution. If I were making a habit of needing that
older system I might take a look at it but this works for what I need.

Why not virtualizing it if you have Parallels or VMWare Fusion? It is not
breaking Apple license regarding virtualization since Lion, you can install
both client and server in virtual machine.

Re: Mac OS 10.14 Mojave and 4D 15

2018-10-19 Thread Kirk Brooks via 4D_Tech
I'm using v15.6,.5,.4 every day without those sorts of issues. Including 4D
server. It's probably not 4D itself, some other interaction.
On the other hand I spent a couple of hours setting up an external drive as
a boot drive (with Mavericks!) so I can boot an old laptop into that for
working with a v11 db. Just a thought.

I’ve got a fairly complicated db in 15.4 that I can open ok and use as needed
until It bails on ALP use. The client is budgeting for an update.

Re: Mac OS 10.14 Mojave and 4D 15

2018-10-19 Thread macjimbo via 4D_Tech
I just tried running 4D 15.6 (4D, not a built app) on a Mac with Mojave and
it just crashed on launch.

I'm not using Webkit, in fact I only launched it with the standard plugins.

So I don't really know what to do, other than start down the 4D upgrade
route which I was hoping to put off for a while in case it takes a whole
load of development time which I don't have right now.

Does anyone else have experience of 15.6 & Mac OS 10.14 - good or bad?

TIA

Re: Mac OS 10.14 Mojave and 4D 15

2018-10-15 Thread Kirk Brooks via 4D_Tech
James,
It works mostly.

WebKit is completely horked so things like the Welcome Wizard and any other
web areas that use the WebKit are screwed. They are still active, though.
For example, if you click on the blank Welcome Wizard in a space where an
active link is it still works. Not necessarily a good thing.

You can turn off WebKit and if you aren't using 'Access 4D Methods' that's
fine. However, if your app is also running on Windows 10 machines they
won't run the v15 web areas natively, at least ours didn't. My solution was
to duplicate the affected forms, configure one for Mac and one for Windows
and display accordingly.

Do not expect any v15 updates - v15 is officially sunseted by 4D.

I haven't noticed any other performance issues. Cosmetically the window
placement with multiple monitors seems fussy. But so far every v15 database
I tried to open has.

I haven't tried running it on a Mac server like you are. I have run server
on my dev machine for testing but not compiled, as I think about it. Have
you tried opening an un-compiled version on the Mini? Might let you see an
error message before it crashes. You may need to recompile for 64 bit if
it's not already. Take a look at the compatibility settings. Components and
plugins would be the next things I'd check.

Mac OS 10.14 Mojave and 4D 15

2018-10-15 Thread James Knight via 4D_Tech
Hi folks

Does anyone know if 4D 15 will work on Mojave?

We've just purchased a new Mac Mini with Mojave pre-installed, and our built
application crashes on launch. Before I spend hours troubleshooting, would be
helpful to know if anyone has 4D v15 working on Mojave at all, and in
particular if a compiled/merged app will run.

Thanks!

Just curious - I get a -10509 ‘Can’t open database’ runtime error when I try.

Thanks,
