[AI] Yahoo to introduce structured Web search
Yahoo to introduce structured Web search Yahoo's new structured search is primarily suitable for e-commerce applications such as online shopping By John Ribeiro, IDG News Service Users of Yahoo Search may soon be able to do a structured search around select terms, rather than navigate through a large number of search results. The company plans to offer a new structured search to make the Web easier to navigate. If a user enters the words mobile phone in the search box, for example, apart from throwing up the usual search results containing the word mobile phone, Yahoo's new structured search will also offer pull down menus with choices including mobile phone brands, technologies, and specifications, and other features, said Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Yahoo's vice president of research for Europe and Latin America, in an interview. The feature is primarily suitable for e-commerce applications such as online shopping , he added. Once the user has made a selection on the menus, Yahoo Search will give the user a list of mobile phones meeting the specifications, their prices, and the Web sites where they can be purchased. Baeza-Yates did not disclose a date when this feature would be available on Yahoo Search, but indicated it could happen fast. The structured search feature is one of many technologies that Yahoo plans to introduce to differentiate its search from that of its competitors like Google. The company is also working on a new distributed search architecture that would make local search a lot faster, according to Baeza-Yates. The plan is to have a network of datacenters in many countries so that local queries are handled fast locally at the datacenter in the country, he added. The problem, which we are trying to solve, is to make the search for global queries also fast, as the latency of the network is the main problem, he said. Semantic search, another area many search engine providers are working on, is not scalable and fast enough for a billion Web pages, according to Baeza-Yates. Semantic Search tries to use semantics, or the meaning in language, to generate search results. Parsing multiple languages is not an easy task, and is made all the more difficult because users dont usually write a query in proper natural language syntax, Baeza-Yates said. Yahoo is instead trying to use natural language technology to derive information on the intention of the query, and achieve better results, he added. [AI] A talking library for the blind
A talking library for the blind Wednesday, 28 November , 2007, 11:44 Kozhikode: Libraries are silent zones and it is no different at Farook College near this Kerala city. But sometimes in its quiet ambience you may hear a voice reading aloud in English in an accent that is not native. Don't be perturbed - it is the Digital Talking Book Library. The college, located about 15 km from here, has installed this facility at the library for the benefit of visually challenged students and aptly named it 'Insight'. 'Insight' helps 32 blind students at the college to delve into the vast world of books without the help of Braille. The library has four computers to help such students. The facility consists of a few computers, a scanner and a set of speakers and also headphones. Through voice prompts it also helps the user operate the computer. Visually challenged students find it very useful. They spend hours at these machines reading books and periodicals, said M Ayub, the librarian. Its operation is simple. You have to just scan the pages you want to read. The computer will convert it into sound bytes. The students have learned to operate the system and they are doing it without help from others, he added. The gadget looks ordinary, but the software may baffle you. We are using the software Jaws and Kurzweil to operate these systems, says Habeeb C, a guest lecturer and a former student of the college, as he operates the system with astonishing ease. He is visually challenged. He has played a key role in encouraging the authorities to install the facility. A brilliant student and a winner of scholarship from the Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA), Habeeb had been familiar with this system from his student days. The talking library has also come in for praise from a UGC review committee team, which recently visited the college. They said they haven't come across such a facility in any other arts and science college in the country, said the librarian. The college is also planning to provide more help to the visually challenged. We are planning to bring out compact discs of lectures and to install a printer which can print scanned materials in Braille. The printer is costly and it has to be imported, adds Ayub. Farook College, affiliated to Calicut University, is run by the Rousathul Uloom Association. http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=14567768 Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id:[EMAIL PROTECTED], YahooSkype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Gmail Works Fine on iPhone, Blanks on Windows Mobile
Gmail Works Fine on iPhone, Blanks on Windows Mobile Windows Mobile Gmail fans worry about a known glitch in the mobile e-mail offering that hasn't been fixed by Google. Nancy Gohring, IDG News Service Tuesday, November 27, 2007 5:00 PM PST Windows Mobile Gmail fans are getting antsy about a known glitch in the mobile e-mail offering that hasn't been fixed by Google in about a month. In October Google began supporting IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) for Gmail, which means that when mobile users send and receive Gmail e-mail on their mobile phones, their changes are synched, appearing the next time the user accesses Gmail from any device. With POP3, previously the only e-mail protocol supported by Gmail, if a user deleted a Gmail message from their inbox using their cell phone, the message would still appear in the inbox the next time the user logged on to Gmail from their computer. However, shortly after the IMAP capability was activated, users of Windows Mobile phones began complaining in online forums about problems. Some of them said that HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) e-mails showed up blank on their phones. Others said that message headers appeared on their phones but not the messages themselves. The problem appears to affect mainly Windows Mobile users. In late October, one user complained to Google about the problem with Windows Mobile and got a reply saying that Google hadn't had the chance to test the Windows Mobile mail client. Why would google make this work with the iPhone and not WM devices, another user wrote in the forum after reading the letter that was purportedly from Google. I would think the WM community is much larger than the iPhone community, and I find it difficult to believe that no one at Google owns or uses a WM device. On Nov. 16, a Google employee posted a note acknowledging the problem. Google has added the issue on its Gmail known issues page , where users can report their experiences. Google says it is working to address the issue. But by Nov. 27, users were beginning to run out of patience. Google people! The listing on the known issues page hasn't changed in days ... weeks. At least let us know you are working on this. Do you realize, that Gmail IMAP on Windows Mobile in its current state is unusable? one person wrote. Google did not reply to a question about when the fix might be released. Solving this issue may not be the end of Google's Windows Mobile problems. One blogger says that the Gmail IMAP service dramatically drains the battery on Windows Mobile phones. Todd Ogasawara , a blogger and a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in mobile devices, ran an informal test on his T-Mobile Dash , a Windows Mobile phone. He watched his battery life drop 4 percent after instructing the phone to synch with the Gmail IMAP server just once. He began looking at the effect of Gmail IMAP on his battery after noticing a dramatic decrease in battery life once he signed up for the Gmail service. Another tech enthusiast and blogger, Josh Smith , said he has noticed that the Gmail IMAP servers are quite slow and the amount of time it takes to check them from a phone could lead to a drained battery. However, since the messages are coming through blank, he hasn't been using the service enough to notice an impact on battery life on his Windows Mobile phone, he said. The issues highlight the challenges that Google has complained about in working with the mobile industry. Application developers must tweak or write new applications for each handset operating system and often even for different handsets running the same software. Google hopes to solve the problem with its Android mobile platform, which it plans to make available for free and open source. Some mobile experts, however, have suggested that Android may only exacerbate the problem by adding one more platform that developers will have to address. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,140033-pg,1/article.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id:[EMAIL PROTECTED], YahooSkype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Lotus Notes Vulnerable to E-Mail Attack
Lotus Notes Vulnerable to E-Mail Attack A serious bug in IBM's Lotus Notes software could be used by attackers to run unauthorized software on a victim's PC, researchers at Core Security Technologies reported Tuesday. The flaw lies in the Autonomy KeyView software used by Lotus Notes to process Lotus 1-2-3 files. Core's researchers found that when they opened a specially crafted Lotus 1-2-3 e-mail attachment in Lotus Notes, they could run unauthorized software on the PC. Although details of the flaw have not been published, and it has not been picked up by online criminals, it would not be hard for a determined attacker to write code that exploited the flaw, said Ivan Arce, chief technology officer with Core. That's because there have already been a number of similar KeyView bugs found this year, so sample exploit code for similar flaws can easily be found. Previously there have been other flaws like this published for the same software development kit, he said. So anyone keeping track of that could write an exploit pretty quickly. Other Vulnerabilities In the past year, security researchers have increasingly focused on these kinds of vulnerabilities, called file parsing bugs. Improvements in hacking software, called fuzzers, which send a barrage of data to programs in order to see if they can be made to act in unexpected ways, have made this type of research easier. In the past year, security researchers have increasingly focused on these kinds of vulnerabilities, called file parsing bugs. Improvements in hacking software, called fuzzers, which send a barrage of data to programs in order to see if they can be made to act in unexpected ways, have made this type of research easier. In fact, Symantec recently acknowledged a bug in the KeyView module used by its Symantec Mail Security software. Arce had not tested Symantec's products for this vulnerability, but he said it was quite possibly vulnerable to the flaw as well. The flaw probably affects other products, according to security experts, because KeyView -- which can be used to view and print files in about 300 file formats -- is used in many different programs. More than 300 companies, including Symantec and Oracle , have licensed the KeyView software. IBM acknowledged the problem in a security alert , released Monday, and the company is offering a software patch for Notes 7 users. For those using an older version of Notes, IBM has suggested several workarounds, including deleting the Windows DLL (dynamic link library) file that is associated with Notes. Autonomy acquired the KeyView software as part of its $500 million purchase of search software vendor Verity, completed in late 2005. http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/140034/lotus_notes_vulnerable_to_email_attack.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id:[EMAIL PROTECTED], YahooSkype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Draft policy for exams urgent
Hi Friends Have drafted a Policy for Examinations of the Visually disabled in India thanks to the input from Anjali, Asif, Dipendra, Harish, Ketan, Neha, Pranav, Rajesh, Sam and SGS Sisodia and numerous others who helped when the Maharashtra Guidelines were being framed. Please let me have your comments on this draft urgently and no later than this evening. I need to send it to the Disability commission. thanks Kanchan Policy for Examination of the Visually Disabled The need for a standard and comprehensive Policy throughout India for the examination of the Visually Disabled has been growing since: a.. Every year more and more Visually Disabled candidates are appearing for various examinations. b.. Number of examining bodies has been increasing over the years a.. Various orders/judgments/directions have been passed by various Courts/Commissions/Authorities and deal with the problem in piecemeal. a.. Various examination conducting authorities have different rules and/or implement the rules in different ways. a.. Technology is improving and needs to be taken into account a.. The anxiety suffered by the examinees before and during the examination has to be removed a.. Questions asked at written examinations and the examinations themselves are varied and need to be answered in various ways. a.. Competition is increasing and the Visually Disabled have to be given a level playing field This Policy will apply to all examinations being conducted in India generally and specifically to examinations conducted by Educational institutions- schools and colleges (both internal and external), School and College Boards, universities and deemed universities, autonomous bodies conducting entrance or promotional examinations as well as all recruiting/promoting authorities and any other authorities or bodies under which a Visually Disabled examinee wishes to appear for an examination for any purpose whatsoever. The paramount purpose of the Policy is to alleviate the hardship being caused to the Visually disabled candidate due to uncertainty in policy and to mitigate the effects of a disability. 1. Scribe a. The Visually Disabled candidate must be allowed the use of a Scribe who will read the question papers and write/type the answers dictated by the Visually disabled candidate. b. Since one of the important factors while doing an examination is speed, adequate practice is necessary, Visually Disabled persons should be allowed to use the services of a scribe of his/her own choice. The Visually Disabled candidate may however request the Examining authority to provide a Scribe. c. The discretion to arrange for his/her own Scribe or to be provided by a Scribe by the Examining Authority is with the candidate alone. d. No other restriction other than those mentioned in Clauses 3 or 4 herein below should be imposed on the selection of a scribe. e. It is desirable that the candidate and the scribe are from the same stream. 2. Examination Form/Application a. All Application Forms/Advertisements for exams should mention that a Visually Disabled candidate will be allowed the use of a Scribe and alternative formats will be provided. b. The examining authority should give a clear option in the advertisement itself whether the examinee wishes the scribe to be provided by the examination conducting body or he/she wishes to arrange the scribe on his/her own. c. The Examining authority at the time of advertisement/application should also print the criteria/qualification for scribe to be followed. d. The application form should have a provision asking low vision persons to indicate the requirement of question paper in large print. The advertisement for examination as well as the application form should also clearly mention that the low vision persons would be allowed the use of magnifying glass. 3. Scribes chosen by Candidate a. In case the candidate avails the services of his/her own scribe/writer, the scribe/writer should be one grade junior in academic qualification than the candidate if from the same stream. However, this condition shall not apply if the scribe/writer is from a different stream. b. For competitive examinations the scribe needs to be one level below the eligibility criteria of the competitive exam in consideration. c. For internal exams of schools and colleges the condition of the scribe being one grade junior in academic qualification than the candidate should not be enforced strictly as this would cause undue hardship to the candidate and give rise to unviable solutions. 4. Scribes provided by Examining Authorities a. Considering the practical problems, it is necessary that even if the scribe is provided by the examination conducting authorities, at the request of examinee, such authorities must
Re: [AI] Draft policy for exams urgent
Hello Kanchan, It is certainly a well drafted policy. It pretty much covers everything. But a couple of suggestions though: The policy also should include sufficient guidelines describing what should be done in the event of certain delays as the result of computer problems or the malfunctioning of the software. Because things can go wrong on that front and visually challenged candidates should not suffer as the result of such issues. So in my view, the software/hardware requirements should be amended to be inclusive of this issue. Second, visually impaired candidates are also increasingly appearing on various exams that require solving of extensive mathematical problems. Some of those exams may actually allow regular students to use calculator and in such circumstances, visually challenged candidates also should be allowed to bring talking calculator in to the examination hall. Re: [AI] Draft policy for exams urgent
Dear Kanchan, It is an excellent document except that there should be a provision for viva exam in certain cases where the use of graphs is immense and those of us who are totally blind by birth find it difficult to read them. Further, after this policy comes into effect the nonimplementing body such as the school/colleges/universities should invalidate the examination and they should reorganize the same as the disabled person looses the marks as it happened in my own case. Thank you. Source: The Hindu (http://www.hinduonnet.com/2007/11/29/stories/2007112958412200.htm) All those books online Major digital library project led by Indian-origin Professor Professor Raj Reddy PITTSBURGH: Nearly a decade ago, computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University embarked on a project with an astonishingly lofty goal: digitise the published works of humankind and make them freely available online. The architects of the Universal Library project said on Tuesday they had surpassed their latest target, having scanned more than 1.5 million books and are continuing to scan thousands more daily. Most of the books scanned are in the Chinese language. Access to all Anyone who can get on the Internet now has access to a collection of books the size of a large university library, said Raj Reddy, a Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at the university who led the project. Much of the recent work in the Million Book Project has been carried out by workers at scanning centres in India and China, helped by $3.5 million in seed funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation and in-kind contributions from computer hardware and software makers. The U.S., China and India each have contributed $10 million to the project, undertaken with partners at Chinas Zhejiang University, the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, and Egypts Library at Alexandria. At least half the books are out of copyright or scanned with the permission of copyright holders. Excerpts of copyright-protected works are available, though the organisers expect complete texts to become available eventually. Other projects The project is not the first of its kind. Online search engine operator Google and software giant Microsoft have begun similar endeavours, though Carnegie Mellon representatives say theirs is the largest university-based digital library of free books and that its purpose is non-commercial. It is a step toward the creation of an online library that would make traditionally published books available to all, said Professor Reddy. The economic barriers to the distribution of knowledge are falling, he said in a statement. Michael Shamos, a Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon and a copyright lawyer working on the project, said the librarys mission included making vast amounts of information freely available and preserving rare and decaying texts, among other things. Some declined Books have been borrowed for scanning from institutions and individuals worldwide, though institutions in Europe declined to participate, he said. The library so far has books published in 20 languages, including 970,000 in Chinese, 360,000 in English, 50,000 in Telugu and 40,000 in Arabic. Hai Kanchan: Your work is certainly commendable. In fact, I was also thinking on the same lines as Vetri as I was going through the draft and perhaps, if there is a possibility, organisations can conduct trial tests much before the original tests and make candidates acclimatize with the system. I found talking calculators to be a good suggestion as well, in the event of students attending complex calculation-based tests. By the way, I also feel organisations in Karnataka and other states must take this up as a precedence and ask for a similar policy for visually challenged candidates. Hope someone takes the cue. Well drafted Kanchan. Seems to cover all points.Only a small modification as regards Screen Readers. Mention JAWS or any other screen reading software the candidate is comfortable with. Hi this is being drafted for India and not for a particular State. You need to spread the word if we succeed. Sweety my dear the 55% is not for your scribe but only for the scribe provided by the Authority. Your Scribe is covered in clause 3 and then if you choose not to bring your own scribe then it is the authority who will provide a scribe with some minimum qualifications. Kanchan ji, No doubt, this draft of policy is commendable piece of work from your side. I would like to say as far as softwares are concerned, we should not be strict on the JAWS and MS Word. Because, practically speaking, most of the universities and colleges in India do not still have a authorized copy of JAWS for Windows. and alternative methods for JAWS will not be accepted. So, I would like to say why don't we write a Screen Reader and a office application as a software requirement. I think this will minimised any further disputtes. Re: [AI] Draft policy for exams urgent
In my opinion, when scribe is one level junior than the applicant, deciding the marks in percentage for writer seems illogical to me. Specially, when the scribe is taken from the different stream. Therefore, the candidate should be allowed to use subscribe with whatever maximum percentage of marks. In addition, I would support Pranav's point that extra 30 minutes per hour should be given instead of 20 minutes to the applicant. I am afraid, a scribe with 55% marks may not be found in all subjects, particularly in an area like Kolkata where low scoring was the general trend even a few years back. Moreover, emphasis should be laid on competitive examinations for recruitments so that these guidelines are followed in those exams. - Original Message - From: Punit Diwan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2007 1:13 PM Subject: [AI] Draft policy for exams urgent Kanchan ji, No doubt, this draft of policy is commendable piece of work from your side. I would like to say as far as softwares are concerned, we should not be strict on the JAWS and MS Word. Because, practically speaking, most of the universities and colleges in India do not still have a authorized copy of JAWS for Windows. and alternative methods for JAWS will not be accepted. So, I would like to say why don't we mention a Screen Reader and a office application as a software requirements in policy. I think this will minimised any further disputes. points 30 minutes in pranav's mail are, in my opinion, too demanding and far fetched. We should not demand something apparently beyond reasonable. Rajesh and7 regarding scribe not being junior and extra time of 3 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ointsno. 3 and Pranav Lal Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2007 12:45 PM To: 'pamnani'; accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: Re: [AI] Draft policy for exams urgent Kanchan, 1. Why specify the software that is to be used? A person could be comfortable in writing an exam even in an application like Open office. 2. Why copy and paste from Pagemaker? This could create a problem with tables. Ideally, question papers should be Microsoft Office documents such that the text is in word and data relating to accounts problems etc should be in Excel. Assuming this is not possible then just ask for Word files without specifying the conversion. 3. snip a. In case the candidate avails the services of his/her own scribe/writer, the scribe/writer should be one grade junior in academic qualification than the candidate if from the same stream. However, this condition shall not apply if the scribe/writer is from a different stream. PL] Why should this guideline be present at all? Detecting cheeting is the authority's responsibility. b. For competitive examinations the scribe needs to be one level below the eligibility criteria of the competitive exam in consideration. PL] Why? See the logic in the above point. Another thing with a computer, it should be of a configuration greater than what is the minimum required to support the screen reader. This is necessary since the student will be running other software as well so system resources must be sufficient to run the operating system, the screen reader and other software concurrently. 4. It is good to have a UPS at the center but you need to specify that the computer on which the student is writing must be connected to this UPS. Plus, the UPS must be tested to ensure that it is providing backup. 5. A student should be given extra time if the technology fails. 6. If the authority is providing a scribe, the candidate must have a provision to meet the scribe a day before the exam. This would ensure that the 2 get comfortable with one another. It would also give the candidate a chance to check whether the scribe is suitable. 7. As regards the extra time, make it 30 minutes for every hour. 8. In the Delhi University, before I could take an exam, I had to be tested to ensure that I was still blind. My blindness is unchanging. Once tested, the condition will not change. I was tested every year though. This is a pain. The policy must stop this repeated testing. Pranav To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe.
