[AI] First superconducting transistor promises PC revolution

2009-07-07 Thread Sanjay
First superconducting transistor promises PC revolution
The breakthrough promises to put today's gigahertz processors in
the shade - if practical hurdles can be overcome

by Paul Marks

THE world's first superconducting transistor, a long-standing goal for
applied physicists, could lead to dramatically faster microchips.

Last year Andrea Caviglia and his colleagues at the University of
Geneva in Switzerland grew a single crystal containing two metal
oxides, strontium titanate and lanthanum aluminate, as separate
segments. At the interface of these materials, the team found a layer
of free electrons called an electron gas (Science, vol 317, p
1196). At 0.3 kelvin - just above absolute zero - these electrons flow
without resistance and so create a superconductor.

Now the same group says it can switch this superconductivity on and
off by applying a voltage to the interface. The result is a
superconducting version of the field effect transistor (FET) - a
mainstay of digital electronics.
The team can switch the superconductivity on and off by applying a
voltage

A conventional FET contains a sliver of a semiconducting material with
a so-called source electrode at one end and a drain electrode at
the other. Above this source-drain channel is an electrode called the
gate, which acts like a tap: when a switch-on voltage is applied to
the gate, a current flows through the semiconductor channel. That
current's state - either off or on - can act as a digital 0 or 1.

The speed at which a FET can switch is limited by the resistance of
the channel, which creates heat. Higher speeds create more heat until
eventually the device burns out. That's why a superconducting FET
could run much faster.

Caviglia's team made such a transistor by using the lanthanum
aluminate side of its crystal as a source-drain channel and the
strontium titanate layer as the gate (Nature, vol 456, p 624). With
no electric field, there is zero resistance between the source and
drain as the device is superconducting, says Caviglia. But with an
electric field applied to the strontium titanate, the dense electron
gas gets shifted away from the interface and the lanthanum aluminate
stops conducting current.

Caviglia said that computers using such transistors would be much
faster than the gigahertz speeds currently available.

David Cardwell, a superconductor specialist at the University of
Cambridge, thinks the work is an important breakthrough: This is an
exciting effect and has clear potential for a new generation of
high-speed transistors.

[AI] Opening the Book

2009-07-07 Thread Sanjay

  Opening the Book
An Academic's Perspective on NFB's Settlement with Google
   by Paul Harpur

From the Editor: Paul Harpur, who is a lawyer, associate lecturer at
the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, and a PhD candidate,
offered to write a short article for the Braille Monitor about the
importance of the NFB/Google settlement to print-disabled academics and
professional researchers. This is what he says:

Open any book on research methodologies and the first step almost
always involves reading leading textbooks in the field. For researchers who
cannot read standard print this first step creates a substantial barrier.
Some researchers simply ignore textbooks and go straight to journal
articles, reports, legislation, or case law. It is possible with back
referencing to adopt this research methodology, but it is far from ideal.
In most situations failing to read leading textbooks means the resulting
paper lacks the degree of analysis that can only be provided by leading
scholars in the field. Arguably the settlement the NFB reached with Google
late last year will significantly improve the ability of print-disabled
researchers to access textbooks.
Googlebooks have scanned over a million books into digital form and
created access online. For books that are out of copyright, users are able
to click on a button and download the entire book in PDF. For books still
subject to copyright protection, Googlebook will provide more limited
access. The Googlebook search engine will identify the pages in most
textbooks where search terms appear and can provide a table of contents
with most textbooks. Until recently this great resource has been a closed
book for print-disabled users who use screen readers such as JAWS or Window-
Eyes. The settlement the NFB reached with Google should open all these
Googlebook services to print-disabled users.
If implemented, the NFB/Google settlement will arguably provide print-
disabled researchers substantial assistance in performing high-quality
research. Currently a print-disabled researcher can identify titles of
likely textbooks on Googlebook. Because the contents page and page numbers
generally don't appear in an accessible format, there is no way to identify
what part of the book is potentially useful. Without a table of contents a
researcher is unable to determine if the title means the book has useful
chapters. For example, the title of a book on universal design may indicate
that it is relevant, but the chapter headings may indicate that the book
adopts an extremely legalistic approach when the researcher is after a
practical guide to implementing universal design. The ability of the
researcher to read the table of contents will increase his or her ability
to find relevant chapters.
The identification of relevant page numbers in textbooks has the
potential of substantially reducing the time print-disabled students spend
scanning library books. Generally researchers can now identify only that a
particular chapter has information on a point. If the researcher is after
an obscure point, the information may be found on a few pages. Currently
researchers need to scan an entire chapter and scroll through it to find
the relevant pages. The NFB settlement with Google should alter this
procedure and enable researchers to identify relevant pages with greater
ease. Rather than scanning entire books, print-disabled researchers will be
able to identify what pages they think could be relevant and scan only
those. This will save both scanning and reading time.
Print-disabled researchers associated with an educational institution
in the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and many other
countries have a number of the textbooks provided to them on disc in
electronic files. While this is fantastic, often these textbooks in
alternate format do not enable the student to identify which page they are
reading. This becomes a substantial problem if they need to cite or quote
the textbook. The Harvard Bluebook, the American Psychological Association
Citation Guide, and most other referencing guides require authors to
pinpoint references. For sighted researchers this entails simply looking to
the top or bottom of the page. For people using an electronic version,
pinpointing citations can involve serious complications. If for example the
researcher knows the quote comes from a chapter of thirty pages but does
not know precisely what page, he or she must ask a sighted person to assist
in checking a paper copy of the textbook. When Googlebook is fully
accessible, a researcher with a print disability should be able simply to
search Googlebook for the title and part of the phrase. The results should
enable researchers to identify quickly and independently the page on which
the quote appears.

[AI] What happens when silicon can shrink no more?

2009-07-07 Thread Sanjay
Silicon has become synonymous with microelectronics, but now any
number of pretenders are waiting to take its place, says Joerg
  Heber

by Joerg Heber

IN 1965, a year before the first pocket calculator was invented, a
young physicist from Silicon Valley, Gordon Moore, made a daring
prediction. He claimed that the number of components squeezed onto a
single silicon chip would double about every two years. And double,
and double and continue to double. If he had been right, the best
silicon chips today would contain an unbelievable 100 million single
components.

The true figure is more like 2 billion: Moore had underestimated how
fast the shrinking trend would take off. Since the mid-1970s, though,
his law has been a bankable certainty, influencing economic, social
and scientific developments in ways that are hard to overstate.
Google, genome sequencing, multiplayer video games, the search for the
God particle: all rely on silicon's seemingly limitless ability to
deliver more computing speed and capacity - for an ever-diminishing
price.

Moore's law means that the cellphone or iPod in your pocket today has
more byte-crunching power than the mainframes on the Apollo
spacecraft, at the planning stage when the prediction was made. Had
aviation followed a similar trajectory, a flight from New York to
Paris in 2005 would have cost a cent and lasted less than a second,
Intel - the chip giant Moore co-founded in 1968 - calculated.

Can the trend go on? Reports of the imminent death of Moore's law have
been around almost as long as the law itself, and have always proved
exaggerated. But now there is concrete cause for concern. The smallest
features on today's state-of-the-art chips are just a few nanometres
across. At the current rate of shrinking, they will reach the size of
a few silicon atoms by about 2020.

At this kind of scale, the properties that make silicon the
microelectronic material of choice will fail. We must then either
abandon silicon and find an alternative, or accept that the
ever-increasing computing power we have come to depend on has reached
its upper limit - until the unforeseeable time when more exotic
computing schemes, such as quantum computing, become commercially
viable.

And so, even as the last drops of computing power are squeezed out of
silicon, the race is on to find its successor. Bit by bit, a startling
picture is emerging. Not only might natural processes hold the key to
the computer's further evolution, but the ideal nanoelectronic
material might also have been under our noses all along. It could well
be nature's own favoured building block - carbon.

Silicon squeeze
It is easy to forget that no natural law says chips equal silicon. The
element wasn't even the first-choice microelectronic material. It is
relatively difficult to obtain in the very pure form needed, and was
initially passed over in favour of its neighbour in the periodic
table, germanium. In the end, though, silicon's reliability,
performance and abundance - the basic material is freely available in
sand from most beaches - won out.

Germanium and silicon are neither insulators that refuse to conduct
electricity at all, nor conductors that let electrons flow all too
freely. They are semiconductors: reluctant to conduct in their natural
state, but requiring just a nudge, in the form of a small voltage
applied to them, to be persuaded. That sweat-free swapping between
conducting and non-conducting states makes semiconductors the ideal
materials for transistors, the basic on-off switches that make up
electronic logic circuits.

The first transistors were rather crude and bulky devices, with large
wire contacts pressed against an underlying slab of germanium. Today,
lasers are used to etch them in their billions onto wafers of
ultra-pure silicon just a few micrometres thick. Over the past 20
years, Robert Chau has seen efforts to squeeze this compact construct
get ever more challenging. He leads research into advanced transistor
designs at Intel, which supplies about 80 per cent of the world's
silicon processors. Until the 1990s, Moore's law was continued by
relatively simple scaling, he says. Now his researchers are having to
change the materials: almost every part of the transistor that was
originally silicon is being replaced by something else.

Take the two contacts through which electrons flow into and out of the
transistor, the source and the drain. Traditionally, miniaturising
these was a question of finding lasers with smaller and smaller
wavelengths to etch out ever tinier features on the chip. In 2003,
Chau and his Intel colleagues started to use an alloy of silicon
and germanium for the contacts. The separation of atoms in the alloy
is larger than in pure silicon, and the atomic bonds in the channel
become slightly stretched to span the extra space. Electrons can nip
more speedily through this strained silicon, allowing more information
to be processed by a smaller number of

Subject: [AI] Attitude of a few NGOs working in the field of people
withdisabilities

Hi all,

As we know there are plenty of organizations working for people with
disabilities but I off late found, most of them do not have right
attitude
for people with disabilities. Before sensitize the world, it's important
that our organizations should have better sensitization. Recently, I
went to
see someone at a very well known NGO in Bangalore and the way the
security
person spoke to me is rather annoying. Of course, since I know the
people
inside I manage to deal with him in a better way. But I'm really sorry
that
such attitude need to be changed. There would be lots of clients come
from
different sectors and some of them will come with lots of hopes for
their
rehabilitation. But such reception will lead them to panic and impact
more
on their disability.

I'm sorry but in my view, no organization is doing any favor to people
with
disabilities - they are all equally paid well for their services by
respective organizations and all of them are either received good grant
from
Government and in the form of public donations. Hence, they need to feel
really responsible and better to be careful while dealing with
candidates.

I'm writing this here to see if we can collectively do something to
bring
change on this. Sorry, if it falls under off-topic by any chance.

Srinivasu

[AI] Biochemist introduces technologies for blind students

2009-07-07 Thread mukesh jain
Cary Supalo, a blind biochemist has introduced a group of students and
teachers to the tools he is developing to help visually impaired
students
succeed in chemistry.

Supalo, who graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1999 and
is currently a member of the National Federation of the Blind, is
determined to foster a more hands-on experience for blind students
in the chemistry lab.

Supalo introduced a program called JAWS (Job Access with Speech),
designed to convert computer text into audible speech. He and his
colleagues managed
to make JAWS compatible with the various lab probes created by Vernier
Technologies. More than 125 probes are now able to
convert text to speech.

Supalo discussed the Submersible Audible Light Sensor, or SALS. This
device consists of a submersible sensor attached to a control box,
which contains
a speaker. The SALS allows blind students to recognize when a
combination of chemicals yields a new result. Since the student is
unable to see the reaction,
SALS produces a certain pitch when it is submerged in liquid. When two
chemicals combine, a completely different pitch is produced due to the
change
in light content, indicating to the student a change has taken place
in real time. Supalo demonstrated the SALS to the audience, and it was
clear that
many people were impressed with the technology.

Another device showcased at the lecture was the Color Analysis
Laboratory Sensor, or CALS. Like the SALS, this device consists of a
probe connected to a
control box. The CALS identifies the values of red, green, blue and
white to tell the student the color of a specific solid or liquid. The
CALS can identify
certain shades of colors, such as light red (pink) or dark blue
(navy). It currently has a 95 percent success rate, and Supalo is
working to make it
even more accurate.

In addition to the SALS and CALS, Supalo also mentioned a new
stopwatch for blind students he helped develop. It is the only one of
its kind that allows
for accuracy up to one hundredth of a second.

Supalo told the audiences these devices could be used in a variety of
modified experiments for blind students, such as a freezing point
depression lab.

I am aware of a few studies on Disability Employment conducted by NCPEDP, New
Delhi - NGO Research Study in 1998, Corporate Research Study in 1999, Base Line
Study in 2009.

World Bank has also done a study, 'People with Disabilities in India - From
Commitments to Outcome'. There is a chapter on Employment. It is available on
the World Bank WebSite.

CII has brought out a Manual on disability employment, which we have authored
called Values Route to Business - The Why How of employing People with
Disabilities. It is a book. CII is selling it for Rs. 500.

Please give me your mail ID. Will send the information to you.

[AI] Universal remote control for persons with cerebral palsy

2009-07-07 Thread Prof. Prabhat Ranjan
This is my first mail on this forum and I wanted to share about some of
the assistive devices we have been developing. In particular I would
like to mention one device, which is a universal remote control. However
this device monitors body part movement (such as hand movement) and
works without pushing any button like in a normal remote control.

Currently we provide support of 4 devices at one time and we have tested
it with TV and Digital Photo Frame. It can be used to operate any device
which uses IR based remote control. Even light/fan can be operated using
this by having a remote control based (commercially available)
regulator/switch.

We are in discussion with National Trust for supporting further
development of this device. However we have not had any experience of
working with persons with disabilities. I have a feeling that it may be
possible to make this device useful in many other cases as well.

I would like feedback from members of this forum about the usefulness of
such device and what other facilities they would like to see in this. I
can share more information if members require.

Thanks for your cooperation,

- Prabhat Ranjan

[AI] Microsoft warns of serious computer security hole

2009-07-07 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Tuesday, July 7, 2009 : 1300 Hrs

Sci. Tech.
Microsoft warns of serious computer security hole

SAN JOSE, California (AP): Microsoft Corp. has taken the rare step of warning
about a serious computer security vulnerability it hasn't fixed yet.

The vulnerability disclosed Monday affects Internet Explorer users whose
computers run the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating software.

It can allow hackers to remotely take control of victims' machines. The victims
don't need to do anything to get infected except visit a Web site that's
been hacked.

Security experts say criminals have been attacking the vulnerability for nearly
a week. Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software
that exploits the vulnerability. People are drawn to these sites by clicking a
link in spam e-mail.

The so-called ``zero day'' vulnerability disclosed by Microsoft affects a part
of its software used to play video. The problem arises from the way the software
interacts with Internet Explorer, which opens a hole for hackers to tunnel
into.

Microsoft urged vulnerable users to disable the problematic part of its
software, which can be done from Microsoft's Web site, while the company works
on
a ``patch'' - or software fix - for the problem.

Microsoft rarely departs from its practice of issuing security updates the
second Tuesday of each month. When the Redmond, Washington-based company does
issue security reminders at other times, it's because the vulnerabilities are
very serious.

A recent example was the emergency patch Microsoft issued in October for a
vulnerability that criminals exploited to infect millions of PCs with the
Conficker
worm. While initially feared as an all-powerful doomsday device, that network
of infected machines was eventually used for mundane moneymaking schemes
like sending spam and pushing fake antivirus software.

[AI] A visually-challenged student makes it to MIT

2009-07-07 Thread Saravanan Ramadoss

'Nothing is impossible' is his message
A visually-challenged student makes it to MIT
A staunch believer in hard work and perseverance, this 17-year-old with his
excellent command over English might seem like any other teenage. But, for B.
Srikanth, a visually-challenged student, nothing in life came easily. Not even
the admission into Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a full fee
waiver. Hailing from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, this son of a farmer
completed his schooling from Devnar School for Blind.
When he approached an Intermediate college to pursue his plus two in sciences,
he was told he couldn't do that. However, with the help of his mentors from
school, he managed to enrol himself in M.P.C in Royal Junior College and
finished his Intermediate with an impressive 92.5 per cent.
The success in Intermediate didn't come easily. There was no Braille in
Intermediate. My teacher Swarnalatha helped me a lot by recording the entire
syllabus onto audio tapes, he says. I took tuition only for mathematics as it
is not easy to learn this with the help of tapes.
Nothing in this life is impossible, says this die-hard optimist, We are not
'disabled'; we are 'challenged'. So we have to take this as a challenge and
fight back, he says.
Srikanth's zeal to learn and reach for the stars was noticed by Ravi
Kondapalli, an NRI, at a conference 'Ignite the genius within you,' held in
Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. I had expressed my dream of studying in
the U.S. to Mr.Ravi and he took up the challenge to fulfil my dream, says
Srikanth. With the help of support from Valmiki Foundation, an NGO, his
applications were sent to the top-notch universities in the U. S. Soon, his
application was accepted by MIT which not only gave him admission but also
waived the entire fee amount of over 56,000 dollars.
Srikanth hopes to set his own software firm to employ skilled rural youth. The
biggest hurdle for us rural youngsters is the lack of proper education, he
says. Primary education is a constitutional right but we are unable to give
value to that right, he adds.

Hi

I send mails using Internet Explorer and not using any E-mail client.

Even this mail got a bounce notice.

I'm pasting the notice below. There was something related to

mentioned which goes like
sushmee...@blindinfo.org

So, I think this virus, if it is, came through the members of that group.

Kindly guide me how to get rid of this problem.

[AI] Disability Tax incentives

2009-07-07 Thread Mohammed Asif Iqbal
Dear All,
I was viewing this budget and copying this relevant claus for your reference.
88. With a view to providing interim relief to small and marginal
taxpayers and senior citizens, I propose to increase the personal income tax
exemption limit by Rs.15,000 from Rs.2.25 lakh to Rs.2.40 lakh for senior
citizens. Similarly I also propose to raise the exemption limit by Rs.10,000
from Rs.1.80 lakh to Rs.1.90 lakh for women tax payers and by Rs.10,000 from
Rs.1.50 lakh to Rs.1.60 lakh for all other categories of individual taxpayers.
Further, I also propose to increase the deduction under section 80-DD in
respect of maintenance, including medical treatment, of a dependent who is a
person with severe disability to Rs.1 lakh from the present limit of Rs.75,000.

Expert on AI plese comment, is this applicable for us? I mean now we will get
tax exemption of Rs. 1lac ?
Thanks and please advise

[AI] The New Next Generation Perkins Brailler

2009-07-07 Thread mukesh jain
The 'Next Generation Perkins Brailler' - a combined effort of Perkins
Products and the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) includes
functions you asked for – a built-in eraser, a way to read the page
easily while writing, a shorter keystroke requiring less force, and
margin guides on the front rather than the back panel. It even comes
in fun colors, has tactile design elements and is more
environmentally-friendly.

New Features

Easier to hold and carry - 25 % Lighter than the Classic Perkins
Brailler (Dimensions: 12”L x 10”W x 6”H; 30.5 cm L x 25.4 cm W x 15.2
cm H)
Quieter – Keystroke noise is reduced, plus the end-of-line bell is
audible but muted
Gentle Touch Keys – Less force required plus keys are lower and easier to reach
Easy-Erase Button – Push it to erase the entire braille cell
Easy-Grip Handle – The Brailler base is also a handle
Reading Rest – The back panel can be raised to provide a flat surface
for reading the page; a raised line on the left side guides the paper
into the brailler
Front Panel Margin Guides – Easily accessible; no more reaching around the back
Highly durable - Due to a combination of metal inner frame and parts,
and high-impact polycarbonate outer shell
Paper-Feed Knobs - Easier to hold and turn
High contrast colors - Between keys and Brailler body for low vision users
Environmentally friendly – uses recyclable plastic and less oil
Sleek design - With tactile-friendly materials
Cool colors – Raspberry, Midnight Blue and APH Blue
Easy to service for minor repairs – the bottom of the Brailler can be
unscrewed to allow access to the inner workings
Fits most common size paper – 28 cells; fits up to 8 ½ inch wide and
14 inch long paper (21.6 cm W X 35.6 cm L)

For more information visit website:

thanks,
mukesh jain.

Re: [AI] A visually-challenged student makes it to MIT

2009-07-07 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Wonderful, Wonderful.
Such courage, such a fighting spirit is a sine qua non a dignified life despite
blindness.

My heartiest applauses to him.

One thing, though, I would like to know for sure.
Whether the boy has some residual sight which he may use with low vision
devices or otherwise.
I want to know it because I have realized there is a vast difference between
limits of total blindness and partial sight. the people we dub under the
category of visually challenged, do have varying amounts of sight or no sight,
and it makes huge difference in their capabilities to move around, work study
and so on.

So any information, please.

All said and done, I do not want to undermine his achievement and positive
signals it would send about the blind persons in general.

Subject: [AI] A visually-challenged student makes it to MIT
