Re: [AI] kind attention legal experts: disability certificket to dixlexic?

2012-02-28 Thread SC Vashishth
Its long due for a change! the draft of the revised PWD Act has included
it. Perhaps when the Act was created way back in 1994-95 not much was known
about many disabilities that we now know. Labeling often does more harm
which professional are very adept at. The only objective of giving a noun
to a condition is to understand the potential in the condition and
adaptation required to mainstream and nothing more.

I think the accuracy of scanning document depends upon the quality
scanner somewhere, HP Jet2400 is a basic scanner and may not give as
better result as other better scanners. If you are a partially person
then do scan in kurzweil keeping images enabled, it will be benificial
for you in the situation where unclear text appears, you can see the
image of the page by pressing controll+w.
I am also five year law bachelor degree holder and completed my

need any particular please do let me know. I wll be providing you.

Dear friends,

I am also searching for a talking land phone. I bought the one
supplied by Sakshum. The price of which was around Rs. 800. The phone
will announce the numbers which we dial and the number of the incoming
call. The maindrawback of the phone is that the menu options and
contacts are really inaccessible to the visually challenged persons.
It will not speak the name and other options.

While googling for an accessible telephone I found one which seems
really wonderful. I got really impressed by the features available in
it. It provides voice support to all menu options and contact names.
Following are the important features of the phone.

Item Code: BDP400 Geemarc BDP400 Talking Amplified Phone with Large Display
Geemarc's BDP400 Talking Amplified Phone with Large Display was
developed according to the requirements and guidelines set forth by
the Royal Institute for the Blind (RNIB) in England. It was tested at
every stage of the development by focus groups of blind users whose
feedback helped in the development process.

The BDP400 announces the numbers and menu options when you press them.
It also offers full vocalization of names, numbers, menu, commands,
date and time. Volume control is adjustable up to 40dB with an
extra-loud hands-free speakerphone, features to aid individuals with
visual impairments or hearing loss. All keys and key functions are
spoken, as well as any contact names stored in the phone memory.
Product Features•Up to 40dB amplification
•Tone and volume control
•Adjustable receiving tone control +/-10dB
•Boost button activates built-in amplifier
•Adjustable extra large LCD display is 7cm x 11.7cm; characters are 2.3cm
high

•LCD display can show light characters on dark background or dark
characters on light background
•Ergonomic design for easy use by blind users
•Contrasting colors and fonts for visually impaired users
•Spoken menu, names, numbers and commands
•Hear each command spoken with a touch of the buttons
•Talking Caller ID
•Record names in the memory and hear them spoken as a call comes in
•Easy-to-use navigational menu
•Three one-touch memory buttons
•Phone book with 85 numbers
•Big button keypad
•Extra loud hands-free speakerphone with adjustable volume setting
•90dB SPL at 1m extra loud ringer with bright visual ring indicator
•Mute function
•2.5mm headset jack
•Four AA batteries required to store phone numbers in case of power
outage (not included)
•Large print user manual
•Hearing aid compatible

I think it is quite suitable to meet almost all of our requirements.
You can see the full details and video demonstration of it from the
following link.

http://www.assistech.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=BDP400

I have no personal experience with this phone. All the details
mentioned above are copied from their web site. I don’t know whether
some one in our country is using it or not. If somebody is using it or
having any more information please be kind enough to share it over the
list. If If it can work well with our system, it will be very much
useful to the visually challenged people, especially those who are
working with phone

Expecting your expert support.

Re: [AI] Jaws Script for Yahoo Messanger

2012-02-28 Thread Srinivasu Chakravarthula
Dear Nautial,

Which version of Yahoo! Messenger & JAWS are you using? If you are on
latest, you wouldn't require any scripts for most of the functions. Please
download the latest from http://messenger.yahoo.com/

Please note in the new messenger, when you chat with more than one buddy,
multiple windows will not be opened and all windows will be opened in tabbed
environment and your can use CTRL + Tab to switch between the windows. Your
screen reader would notify when a new buddy pings you as the new tab gets
opened.

Please feel free to write in to me if you have any questions.

Good luck,

hello list members,
1. you can try automatic scanning as it gives around 90% accuracy and
speedy as well. you can get it done from any organisation nearby your
place having this machine.
2. portable magnifiers like versa proves very benefitial for low
vision people when there is immediate requirement of checking /
reading document.
3. there is another device by the name zoom x where the book is placed
below a camera connected with the desktop / laptop and within few
seconds after a click, it starts reading the page.
hope that above mentioned things may prove benefitial for you.

3. after selecting the cells, go to edit menu by pressing alt + e.
4. go to fill submenu by pressing I.
5. choose series option by pressing S. the series dialog appears.

dear Merchant,
the procedure is almost the same as you said for filling the months like
january, February, etc. or weeks like Sunday, Monday, etc. as in your
previous procedure, instead of typing 1 in cell A1, type "january" or
Sunday" which ever you want. in the series dialog box, press alt+F to
select
the autofill radio button and hit enter on OK button. that's all. you can
do
it for any list of words other than months and weeks if you add them to
your

custom lists in excel.

Hello Pavan,

I can help you with the auto fill of a series of numbers, somehow I
fail
to do the same with weeks or months, not sure why because the logic is
the

same...

Anyway, here is the Auto Fill for a series of numbers.

In cell A1 type the number 1.
Stay focused on A1 and use the shift key and the down arrow to select
cells till A12
Then press these keys to bring up the autofill dialog box without
disturbing your selection.
Alt,E,I,S
This should bring up the series dialog box. Let the step value be 1. Tab
to the stop value and type in `12. Tab to the OK button and press enter.

If you have done everything as expected, you now should have cells from
A1

to A12 filled with numbers from 1 to 12.

Here is how to do the same with virtual ribbons on in JAWS 12 or 13.

Follow the same steps to select the auto fill range.
Use the alt key to get to the Home tab in the ribbon.
Down arrow to Editing Submenu. Enter or Space bar on Fill button drop
down. Down arrow and hit enter on series...

Follow the same steps to define your step and stop value and complete
the

auto fill function.

Other list members kindly teach us on how to auto fill months and weeks
please.

  Hello Mr. Subramani,

According to me, the best way of finding solution to this chaos is to
first ascertain whether physically fit person too can be disqualified
on the basis of diabetes or not.

If this is a universal rule for all categories of candidates then it
should not be related specifically with VI community. In this case, we

Well, I don't have idea about the definition of "fit" applicable to
all for getting selected for Gov. jobs. But this can be easily
obtained through RTI and its finding should determine the next course
  of action.

  1. If it is for all, then concentration should be put on discarding
such rules through strong arguments in legal battle. One of such can
be that "if person during service is not thrown out of job due to
diabetes, then why not to appoint with it?"

  2. And, if the rule is specially applied for VI candidate, then I
don't think that it would stand in any court on the basis of

So, just proceed further and invest energy in setting things right.

 Hello Hozefa,

Too challenging for me to answer your question but here is an attempt

might work. I urge you to practise this first on a new excel workbook

you apply it to the original file in concern.

I am assuming that the text is before or after the numbers and not in
between them in the column cells. Depending on the case that the numbers
 are
on the right and are of the same number of characters i.e. that the
 numbers
have the same number of digits.

In the cell A1 to A3, type the following:
 BAn 122
 CAL 586
 BOM 856

In the column B cell row 1 type this formula:
 =right(A1,3)
Now see what you get in cell B1, if you have done everything correctly
 you
should see just the number from the cell A1 which is 122. In the formula
above the number 3 indicates the count of characters from the right from
 the
cell referenced which is A1 in this case.

Perhaps this logic can be used to help you to do the sum for the column?

  Hello All,

Medical examination is done for various jobs and stringent norms are in
place for some jobs. The question arising are:

  1. Job actually reserved for VI plus number of vacancies.
  2. Whether any person can be disqualified on basis of diabetes or it is
  the case of VI only.
  3. If disqualified for particular job then some other option can be
  offered.

Please gather maximum information via RTI and decide course of action.

  Hello Mr. Subramani,

According to me, the best way of finding solution to this chaos is to
first ascertain whether physically fit person too can be disqualified
on the basis of diabetes or not.

If this is a universal rule for all categories of candidates then it
should not be related specifically with VI community. In this case, we
may be one of the victims, but not the exclusive one.

 Hello Hozefa,

Too challenging for me to answer your question but here is an attempt
 which
might work. I urge you to practise this first on a new excel workbook
 before
you apply it to the original file in concern.

 Dear friends,

I have an excel file in which columns A to c are filled. Now I want to
calculate the sum of B column. But that column contains both Alfa and
numeric characters. When I calculated the sum of B column, it
displayed the value as zero. So anybody has an idea how to remove Alfa
characters at once from the particular column and multiple rows?

If you are using the browser for checking and composing emails then I have
seen an option called "Check Spelling" in the Standard View of gmail. This
option is present above the message textbox of the Compose Email form. Key
in your message content in the textbox and activate this link. You would
hear JAWS speak out identified words that need be corrected. These words are
highlighted with a yellow background for sighted users to catch attention.
With JAWS we need to check the background colour with the help of INSERT+5.
This option is not as intuitive as the spell check utility of Ms Word,
though can be helpful to identify places where correction is required.

Re: [AI] how a VI can be independent?

2012-02-28 Thread Umesha Economics

good afternoon Uma,
OK, your hardware configuration is sufficient. the resolution is also ideal.
but let me know one thing, how do you edit the text after converting with
fine reader? because, with fine reader, we can get either of RTF, PDF or TXT
outputs as per my knowledge. if you get it in RTF or TXT, you will be having
the text but not the images. in that case, you have to look into the
original printed material for correction. if you get it in PDF, you get the
images but not the text and you can not read and edit it. that is why I
prefer Kurzweil for scanning purposes. also send the scanned book without
correction. but remember you have to send it privately off the list or
through dropbox or sendspace as the attachments are not allowed in the list.

Your approach is good, I too believe in not presuming a denial unless
specifically provided for in black and white.
However, in the case of concession in 299 combo, I am afraid you got the
advantage of BSNL official not being able to produce the relevant circular

Hi,

circulate it along with a chocolate in my office which has around 100

along with governments and NGOs, every individual should take some
activity or other to raise awareness in his/her own small worlds.

This has another advantage. Some of us complain that colleagues are
not sensitive to disabled. Programs like this will help to a great
extent in getting help from people around us.

This article is written by Shampa Sengupta, a Kolkata based activist
working on gender and disability issues. As Indian disability sector is
upset with several cases of discrimination faced by disabled passengers
in
the air, she ponders whether as activists the issues of masses are being
overlooked which makes the movement more for the selected few.

All of us who work for disability rights were enraged at the news of
treatment meted out to fellow activist Jeeja Ghosh by Spicejet Airlines
when she was flying to attend an International seminar from Kolkata to
Goa.
Media played a vital role and gave ample coverage to the incident
screaming
loud that such behaviour with disabled passengers is totally unbecoming.
In solidarity, different groups came together to organise a protest
meeting
in Jeeja’s own city Kolkata. National level rights based groups raised
hue
and cry. And for a change, to our satisfaction, we came to know that our
newly appointed Chief Commissioner of Disabilities of India took
suo-motu
action and issued a show-cause notice based on media reports to the
concerned airlines.

However the question here is not that of one Jeeja Ghosh or one specific
airline. We all know of similar cases in past. Some of them got media
coverage and some of them did not get any. When activists face these
kinds
of situations, they raise their voices. Some of these make news
headlines,
some do not. However, large numbers of cases remain unreported. So one
does not feel surprised when within few days of Jeeja Ghosh incident,
another disabled activist Anjlee Agarwal faces humiliation while flying
from Delhi to Raipur. We are aware that these experiences are part of
lives of disabled people. We are proud that Jeeja and Anjlee have the
guts
to put up the fight. The disability sector of India has also started
looking at civil aviation policies and rules once again, started
discussing
and demanding changes that should be incorporated. It is ironical that
both
Jeeja and Anjlee work for including disability in mainstream with one of
them focusing on accessible environment. It is humiliating and painful
for
any disabled person to face this while travelling by air.

But a greater irony is the fact that we are forgetting the large number
of
disabled population who face harassment in travelling by any mode of
transport on a regular basis. And here I am not talking about physical
accessibility of buses, metro, trains, trams or any other public
transport.
I am talking about the attitudinal barriers they face when they try to
use
public transport. It is important to remember here that thousands of
disabled people in India do not even dream of boarding an aircraft in
their
life-time. One does not have to be an activist to know that poverty and
disability go hand in hand. While most of us spending our time in
thinking
of making “skies” inclusive, let us give some time to make the ground
below
our feet more inclusive.

Endless cases are heard about attitudinal barriers disabled people face
while travelling in a bus. Only once we could make it to a newspaper

[AI] Confused Re: bsnl concession

2012-02-28 Thread Umesha Economics

Dear friends,
I am totally confused. Rajesh Sir said we cannot get concession for combo
plans. but Padmanabham says we can. which is correct? I think the following
is the fact.
for basic plans where internet and voice call service are charged
separately, we can avail 50% discount in rental for voice call plan and 20%
discount for broadband charges. and for combo plans, only 20% discount on
the plan. I do not know whether it is for broadband rent only or even for
additional charges for the usage in excess of free usage. these are my guess
only based on logic. please any member clarify it preferably with relevant
circular/notification/orders.

[AI] Braille texting app

2012-02-28 Thread jayinfotech

Braille texting app could have broader appeal

Designed for the visually impaired, an open-source app out of Georgia Tech
could prove to be a texting tool for the masses.

Most of us have at least tried to text without looking at our phones before.
I confess to having shot off a quick message while stopped at a red light,
or immediately following crazy goals and tackles at soccer matches, or even
from the confines of my pocket at parties.

The prototype app BrailleTouch is currently undergoing usability studies.

Now a free, open-source app called BrailleTouch
  is about to
make this form of multitasking that much easier--for the visually impaired
and sighted alike.

Designed at Georgia Tech, the app incorporates
  the
Braille writing system into a touch-screen device. It essentially turns an
iPhone 's touch screen into a soft-touch
keyboard programmed for Braille, thus requiring only six keys, that converts
gestures into input points.

By using the six-key Braille configuration, the keyboard actually fits on
the touch screen, allowing users to hold their devices with their palms,
thumbs, or pinkies while the screens face away from them.

"BrailleTouch is an out-of-the-box solution that will work with smartphones
and tablets and allow users to start
learning the Braille alphabet in a few minutes," Mario Romero
 , the project's principal
investigator, said in a news release. "It also reduces the need for
expensive proprietary Braille keyboard devices, which typically cost
thousands of dollars."

A few like-minded concepts are popping up, including the similar (but $4.99)
TypeInBraille
  app just
released by EveryWare Technologies and an
8-key version developed by students at Stanford that follows
the location of the user's fingers.

Whether the masses will take the time to learn to type the Braille alphabet
(Romero says they don't have to learn to read it, and that people can learn
to type it in a matter of minutes) remains to be seen, but those who do may
eventually find that they are able to type up to 32 words per minute with 92
percent accuracy, according to early studies with visually impaired
participants proficient in Braille typing.

The app has already won the MobileHCI
2011 competition for design in Stockholm, in the fall of 2011. The Georgia
Tech team has developed iPhone and iPad versions of BrailleTouch and says
Android versions are next.
BrailleTouch is currently being demonstrated at the Abilities Expo-Atlanta
2012 this weekend.

Hi,

I would like to narrate my contribution to raise awareness amongst the
non-disabled community about our issues. On prominant days like
international day for PWDs, Braille day, white cane day, etc., I
write a one paper message about the importance of such days and
circulate it along with a chocolate in my office which has around 100
employees. Now all my colleagues know about issues like this. So,
along with governments and NGOs, every individual should take some
activity or other to raise awareness in his/her own small worlds.

This has another advantage. Some of us complain that colleagues are
not sensitive to disabled. Programs like this will help to a great
extent in getting help from people around us.

Re: [AI] Help needed to calculate sum in Excel worksheet

2012-02-28 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala
Oh Yes!

that's so straight-forward. For example, if the cells contain 100MB,
200MB, 300MB, 400MB, etc then press CTRL+H to open the Find and
Replace dialog box. Enter MB in the Find What edit combo and activate
the Replace All button. Note the the string MB would be replaced all
over the worksheet. If you do not wish to replace it all over the
worksheet then select the cells using GoTo dialog box (CTRL+G) and
then perform a Replace All.

If you wish to retain the original strings then this is not the right option.

Thanks Zoher for telling the list about the easiest way of purging a
known string from a number of places in the worksheet.

Hi Mujtaba,

The RIGHT() function returns a text string, you should use the VALUE()
function to get a numeric equivalent for a numeric calculation. For
example, changing your formula to the following is good for numeric
calculations:

=VALUE(RIGHT(A1, 3))

Also, the LEFT() and RIGHT() functions are good when you have a fixed
number of characters to extract and the characters to purge are
distinct. The above formula would not produce correct results for the
following set of values:

BA12 - (RIGHT function returns A12)
CSG2290 - (RIGHT function returns 290)
A7 - (RIGHT function returns A7)

It's better to use the SUBSTITUTE() function if the string to purge is
known:

=SUBSTITUTE(A1, "MB", "")

where A1 contains a value 241MB.

The limitation of the SUBSTITUTE() function is that it would produce
incorrect results if copied for cells with distinct string values to
purge.

One more option is to use the MID() function. This function returns a
string containing number of characters from a specific position. For
example, the below function returns 123:

=MID("ALLL123large", 4, 3)

If the strings to purge are distinct and you know the length then use
REPLACE() function. For example:

=REPLACE("MUM230", 4, 3) returns 230.
=REPLACE("MUM230RS", 4, 3) also returns 230.

The limitation of REPLACE() function when copying it is that the
strings to pirge should be of the same length and start at the same
position.

The use of these functions depends on the situation you are in. For
single values, they always produce the desired result.

On 2/28/12, Mujtaba Merchant wrote:

Hello Hozefa,

Re: [AI] Help needed to calculate sum in Excel worksheet

2012-02-28 Thread Zujar Shabbir Kanchwala

It's better to use the SUBSTITUTE() function if the string to purge is known:

=SUBSTITUTE(A1, "MB", "")

where A1 contains a value 241MB.

The limitation of the SUBSTITUTE() function is that it would produce
incorrect results if copied for cells with distinct string values to
purge.

One more option is to use the MID() function. This function returns a
string containing number of characters from a specific position. For
example, the below function returns 123:

=MID("ALLL123large", 4, 3)

If the strings to purge are distinct and you know the length then use
REPLACE() function. For example:

Hi Hozefa,

Let me elaborate your query before attempting to answer it. You have
an excel worksheet with data in columns A B and C. I assume that there
is data in rows 2 through 51, row #1 contains column titles. Column B
contains alphanumeric data of the form nMB where n is a numeric value.
You need to remove "MB" from the alphanumeric string and use n in a
numeric calculation.

The SUBSTITUTE() function of Excel can help you in this situation.
Listing below the steps to perform:

1. Enter the following formula in cell D2 and hit the ENTER key:

=VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(B2, "MB", ""))

2. Copy the content of cell D2 to your clipboard with CTRL+C (make
sure the cursor is on the cell D2).

3. Press CTRL+G to launch the GoTo dialog box of Excel. Enter the
following cell reference in the Reference edit combo and press ENTER:

D3:D51

4. Paste clipboard content with CTRL+V.

The cells D2 through D51 would now contain numeric values from column
B that can be used in calculations. The following formula in D52
should give you the sum total of the extracted numeric values:

=SUM(D2:D51)

Note that the SUBSTITUTE() function returns a string that cannot
participate in numeric calculations. So, I have used the VALUE()
function to get numeric equivalent of the string.

Hope your query is answered.

I agree with Ms. Sengupta.
Ideally, every case of discrimination or rights violation in any
transportation, or at any place should be logically followed up to its
conclusion and should receive due publicity.
However, we can as well use some prominent cases to highlight rampent
discrimination an launch effective programmes for awareness.

Subject: [AI] Ground Reality

This article is written by Shampa Sengupta, a Kolkata based activist
working on gender and disability issues. As Indian disability sector is
upset with several cases of discrimination faced by disabled passengers in
the air, she ponders whether as activists the issues of masses are being
overlooked which makes the movement more for the selected few.

All of us who work for disability rights were enraged at the news of
treatment meted out to fellow activist Jeeja Ghosh by Spicejet Airlines
when she was flying to attend an International seminar from Kolkata to Goa.
Media played a vital role and gave ample coverage to the incident screaming
loud that such behaviour with disabled passengers is totally unbecoming.
In solidarity, different groups came together to organise a protest meeting
in Jeeja's own city Kolkata. National level rights based groups raised hue
and cry. And for a change, to our satisfaction, we came to know that our
newly appointed Chief Commissioner of Disabilities of India took suo-motu
action and issued a show-cause notice based on media reports to the
concerned airlines.

However the question here is not that of one Jeeja Ghosh or one specific
airline. We all know of similar cases in past. Some of them got media
coverage and some of them did not get any. When activists face these kinds
of situations, they raise their voices. Some of these make news headlines,
some do not.
We are proud that Jeeja and Anjlee have the guts
to put up the fight. The disability sector of India has also started
looking at civil aviation policies and rules once again, started discussing
and demanding changes that should be incorporated. It is ironical that both
Jeeja and Anjlee work for including disability in mainstream with one of
them focusing on accessible environment. It is humiliating and painful for
any disabled person to face this while travelling by air.

But a greater irony is the fact that we are forgetting the large number of
disabled population who face harassment in travelling by any mode of
transport on a regular basis. And here I am not talking about physical
accessibility of buses, metro, trains, trams or any other public transport.
I am talking about the attitudinal barriers they face when they try to use
public transport. It is important to remember here that thousands of
disabled people in India do not even dream of boarding an aircraft in their
life-time. One does not have to be an activist to know that poverty and
disability go hand in hand. While most of us spending our time in thinking
of making "skies" inclusive, let us give some time to make the ground below
our feet more inclusive.

Endless cases are heard about attitudinal barriers disabled people face
while travelling in a bus. Only once we could make it to a newspaper
headlines. Bidyut Dey, a 50 yr old man with amputed leg was thrown out of a
Government bus as he said he has the right to travel without tickets. Dey
himself a West Bengal Government employee is an organiser of sports of
disabled people. He travels all over India with a cricket team comprising
of disabled youngsters. He refused to let this incident go unreported and
lodged a FIR and followed up the case regularly. That he was ridiculed by
Police for making such trivia a case, and the Magistrate who was listening
to his case was shocked to find that a man can refuse to buy tickets while
travelling and say that this is his right, is another story. Neither the
Police officer nor the magistrate was even aware of a law called Persons
with Disabilities Act after 12 years of enactment. These are the facts we
have learnt to accept. Like we have accepted that problems in daily
commuting is not a big issue.

I still remember when Jeeja and I were co-workers in the same project, she
