Re: [AI] Knowledge Sharing: Optimizing MS Windows XP for the JAWSScreenreader

2012-05-20 Thread Pranay Gadodia
Hi Mujtaba,
If the window is not in maximised state, sometimes jaws does not read things
well. I've seen this happening earlier, and even recently I noticed this when
jaws was not speaking in Excel in a colleague's computer and maximising the
window helped. The system had jaws 13 and excel 2003 on windows xp with other
parameters set as mentioned in your original email. I believe this is also
mentioned in jaws help.

Thanks,
Appreciate your knowledge sharing series!

Pranay.

Subject: [AI] Knowledge Sharing: Optimizing MS Windows XP for the
JAWSScreenreader

Blind and visually impaired people now have access to computers and the
Internet through screenreaders. These screenreaders convert text messages
into audio output formats in spoken language. These screenreaders also come
in various languages, so blind and visually impaired people across the globe
virtually cross the Digital Divide in convenient and accurate ways.

The most popular screenreader in the market is known as JAWS, which is an
acronym for Job Access with Speech. It is a software application designed
for MS Windows OS versions by Freedom Scientific, Inc. The latest version of
JAWS is JAWS 13. The most recent JAWS 13 version is compatible with MS
Windows Vista.

However, many blind and visually impaired computer users choose to install
the JAWS screenreader on MS Windows XP-based machines. This is because the
JAWS screenreader versions that are compatible with the MS Windows Vista OS
versions still have minor bugs or problems regarding accessibility to the
on-screen features of the more visual MS Windows Vista. Optimizing the look
and feel of MS Windows XP can virtually release the full potential of the
JAWS screenreader, so here are some tips to customize the MS Windows XP OS
in order to make the JAWS screenreader more efficient and user-friendly.

1. Configure MS Windows XP's display settings to match the functions of
JAWS. You can do this by going to Control Panel and selecting the Display
icon. Double-clicking on the aforementioned icon will launch a dialogue box
with selections/options that can be modified upon the discretion of the
user. Going to the Desktop tab and choosing None from the list of
backgrounds for the desktop wallpaper will make JAWS accurately read
displayed text message on the screen. Afterwards, going to the Screen Saver
tab and selecting None from the list of screen savers will allow the blind
or the visually impaired JAWS user to prevent screen savers from popping up
in various intervals that can block the view of JAWS to the text messages
displayed on the screen. Click the Ok button or the Apply button before
selecting the Ok button to change the desktop settings of MS windows XP.

2. If you're still having a hard time unleashing the fullest potential of
the JAWS screenreader on MS Windows XP, you should right-click on an empty
space in the desktop and choose Properties. This will launch the Display
dialogue box. Going to the Appearance tab and choosing the Windows Classic
Style from the list of Windows and Buttons drop-down menu will further
optimize JAWS to work properly with the MS Windows XP OS. In addition,
selecting the Default (Blue) option from the Color Scheme drop-down list and
the Normal option from the Font Size drop-down menu will tweak the MS
Windows XP OS to work even better with JAWS. Finally, going to the Settings
tab and selecting 11% or 1024x768 pixels as the screen resolution will
optimize JAWS to efficiently read the displayed text messages on the screen
by the MS Windows XP OS or other applications installed on the machine.

3. Select and configure JAWS to read Labeled Graphics. This will make the
JAWS screenreader more compatible with most programs, especially IE, since
the application can now accurately read labeled graphics and symbols that
are usually found on dialogue boxes of MS Windows XP, Windows XP-based
applications, and various websites published on the World Wide Web.

4. For JAWS to become more compatible with other MS Windows XP-based
applications, browse through the Internet for JFW scripts and lists that
were designed for the purpose of providing unrestricted access to blind and
visually impaired JAWS users when it comes to various MS Windows XP-based
programs.

5. If you are using office applications which are 2007 and higher, use the
virtual ribbons feature with JAWS 12 and 13. This feature allows the user to
navigate the ribbons on the office applications in a organized manner
without getting lost in the application and menus.

Well these are just some basic settings for your Windows XP OS to work
efficiently with the JAWS screen reader, please feel free to share your tips
too!

You can move or resize a window when it is in a normal or restored
state - a window is said to be in a restored state when it is not
maximized/minimized. This can be confirmed by checking if the Restore

ALT+SPACEBAR, disabled means the window is already in a restored state
and enabled means it is not. If Restore option is enabled then press

1. Press ALT+SPACEBAR to open the context or control menu for the

2. Select Move or Size option as desired.
3. Press SHIFT+ARROW keys to move/resize the window as many times you want.
4. Press ENTER to apply changes.

Note that you can press ESCAPE key to reject positioning/sizing

You can move or resize a window when it is in a normal or restored state - a
window is said to be in a restored state when it is not maximized/minimized.
This can be confirmed by checking if the Restore option is disabled in the
context menu that appears by pressing
ALT+SPACEBAR, disabled means the window is already in a restored state
and enabled means it is not. If Restore option is enabled then press ENTER
on it to Restore the window. Steps to Move/Size a window are listed below:

1. Press ALT+SPACEBAR to open the context or control menu for the
application window in focus.
2. Select Move or Size option as desired.
3. Press SHIFT+ARROW keys to move/resize the window as many times you want.
4. Press ENTER to apply changes.

Note that you can press ESCAPE key to reject positioning/sizing changes
before step 4 above. Below are the effects of pressing
SHIFT+ARROW keys in step 3:

Move:
SHIFT+ARROW key moves the window by one point in the direction of the
arrow key. For example SHIFT+UP moves the window one point above the current
location.

Size:
1. The width changes by pressing SHIFT+LEFT and SHIFT+RIGHT. Pressing one of
these keys for the first time after step 2 determines the direction in which
you wish to change the width. Pressing the same arrow successively increases
the width in that direction while the opposite arrow decreases the width in
that direction.
2. The height changes by pressing SHIFT+UP and SHIFT+DOWN. Pressing one of
these keys for the first time after step 2 determines the direction in which
you wish to change the height. Pressing the same arrow successively
increases the height in that direction while the opposite arrow decreases
the height in that direction.

Re: [AI] Resize window using jaws

2012-05-20 Thread radha mahesh
Guys,

I asked this for drag and drop option.
in jaws while doing so it says the action is cancelled since it is
covered by another window.

Zujar,
Thank you very much,
I did it with the help of sighted assistance but mom says it is not resizing.

I couldn't do drag and drop also

Is that I should hit the shift plus left arrow key successively to
decrease the size of right side of the window?.

Many thanks for assisting with.
Cheers,

Subject: Re: [AI] Resize window using jaws

You can move or resize a window when it is in a normal or restored
state - a window is said to be in a restored state when it is not
maximized/minimized. This can be confirmed by checking if the Restore
option is disabled in the context menu that appears by pressing
ALT+SPACEBAR, disabled means the window is already in a restored state
and enabled means it is not. If Restore option is enabled then press
ENTER on it to Restore the window. Steps to Move/Size a window are
 listed below:

 1. Press ALT+SPACEBAR to open the context or control menu for the
 application window in focus.
 2. Select Move or Size option as desired.
 3. Press SHIFT+ARROW keys to move/resize the window as many times you want.
 4. Press ENTER to apply changes.

Note that you can press ESCAPE key to reject positioning/sizing
changes before step 4 above. Below are the effects of pressing
 SHIFT+ARROW keys in step 3:

 Move:
SHIFT+ARROW key moves the window by one point in the direction of the
arrow key. For example SHIFT+UP moves the window one point above the
 current location.

 Size:
 1. The width changes by pressing SHIFT+LEFT and SHIFT+RIGHT. Pressing
one of these keys for the first time after step 2 determines the
direction in which you wish to change the width. Pressing the same
arrow successively increases the width in that direction while the
opposite arrow decreases the width in that direction.
 2. The height changes by pressing SHIFT+UP and SHIFT+DOWN. Pressing
one of these keys for the first time after step 2 determines the
direction in which you wish to change the height. Pressing the same
arrow successively increases the height in that direction while the
opposite arrow decreases the height in that direction.

I am the topper in my school in commerce for 10th grade.
I got 94 marks in commercial studies. So should see as I will get more

If that is the case, I will be more than happy...

hi all
I am little delighted to tell that my ICSE exam results were revealed.
I got 81% in my ICSSE board exam. I am sorry to tell this that I got
very less marks in Math as I told u all before only that the paper was
not too compatible for me but the past is past. I am little frustrated
but my parents r very happy with the marks I have got. They told me
that it is really great to study and pass in ICSE board.
I am the topper in my school in commerce for 10th grade.
I got 94 marks in commercial studies. So should see as I will get more
percentage as in ICSE they take into consideration top 5 subjects
only.
If that is the case, I will be more than happy...
I am telling u all this that if there is any 9th grader who is doing
is ICSE syllabus, I beg him that not to take math in 10th grade as the
board is too rigid for blind people especially for math.

 3. Press SHIFT+ARROW keys to move/resize the window as many times you
 want.

Subject: [AI] Computer controlled Body Massager

Hi

I came across an interesting device when I visited the wellness facility at
my office this Friday. It was a BP monitoring machine connected to the
desktop computer. It examined my pulse and updated the information in my
medical records.

By any chance, is there an electronic massager available in the market, with
the functionalities of offering customized automated massage therapies?

Thanks

- Syed

Zujar,
Thank you very much,
I did it with the help of sighted assistance but mom says it is not
resizing.

I couldn't do drag and drop also

Is that I should hit the shift plus left arrow key successively to
decrease the size of right side of the window?.

Many thanks for assisting with.

 3. Press SHIFT+ARROW keys to move/resize the window as many times you
want.

Dear friends good afternoon to all of you.

According to sub section B of section 2 of PWD act 1995.

 (b) Blindness refers to a condition where a person suffers from any of
 the following conditions, namely:-

 (1) Total absence of sight: or

 (2) Visual acuity not exceeding 6/60 or 20/200 (snellen) in the better eye

 with correcting lenses: or

 (3) Limitation of the field of vision subtending an angle of 20 degree or

 worse:

in the above definition I am clearly understood the point No 1. but I
could not understand how much percentage of blindness for point 2 how
much percentage of blindness for point 3? could anybody clear my
 doubt.

while you are giving some useful information to the members, you are also

you can spend few minutes to help them in giving the information, why not
spend few more minutes to make it quite accessible? remember, if you i.e.

Government Promises of Inclusive Growth and Development

Ignore Persons With Disabilities

A strikingly shocking instance of how the interests of millions of
disabled persons in

the country remain unaddressed in the Government's employment/poverty

reduction Schemes came to the force in the recent Budget Speech of the
Finance

Minister. Under the Heading Inclusive Development, the Minister outlined
a

number of schemes targeted to ensure the inclusion of various marginalized

sections in the mainstream development. However, the Minister conveniently

forgot persons with disabilities in his speech, barring a passing
reference.

The concern or rather lack of it of the present government towards this
critical

sector of society can also be seen in the fact that virtually no attempt
is made to

ensure the inclusion of disabled persons and particularly the blind and
the low

vision in the mainstream inclusive development schemes such as MNREGA.
This

came out quite clearly in a major research study conducted by a premier
national

self-help organization of the blind, namely, All India Confederation of
the Blind.

This research study concentrated upon MNREGA, the much talked-of
mainstream

poverty alleviation scheme and the disability-specific self-employment
schemes

run by the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (a

Ministry of Social Justice Empowerment undertaking with an authorized
share

capital of Rupees four hundred crores). The Study was conducted in eight
states

across the country-Punjab, Rajasthan, Meghalaya and Karnataka for MNREGA;

Haryana, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh for NHFDC. The objectives of
this

research were to ascertain the coverage of the visually impaired under
these

schemes, both at the policy and the implementation levels, the
difficulties faced by

them in accessing the benefits of the above two schemes and impact on
their life

quality.

The methodology adopted for the Study consisted of:

.

Perusal of the documents of the Schemes

.

Obtaining particulars of visually impaired beneficiaries of the two
Schemes from the concerned departments/agencies,

through applications under the RTI Act

.

Interviews with the reported beneficiaries at their place of
work/residence and with the concerned officials.

The results of the Study showed a callous neglect of the needs and

interests of needy visually impaired persons.

Though the Persons With Disabilities Act, 1995 enjoins upon the Government
to

earmark at least 3% of its resources for disabled persons in all poverty
alleviation

schemes, the Government violated the said Act passed by the Parliament
while

formulating the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in 2005. The NREGA
Act

made no mention of help

hi all
I am little delighted to tell that my ICSE exam results were revealed.
I got 81% in my ICSSE board exam. I am sorry to tell this that I got very
less marks in Math as I told u all before only that the paper was not too
compatible for me but the past is past. I am little frustrated but my
parents r very happy with the marks I have got. They told me that it is
really great to study and pass in ICSE board.
I am the topper in my school in commerce for 10th grade.
I got 94 marks in commercial studies. So should see as I will get more
percentage as in ICSE they take into consideration top 5 subjects only.
If that is the case, I will be more than happy...
I am telling u all this that if there is any 9th grader who is doing is ICSE
syllabus, I beg him that not to take math in 10th grade as the board is too
rigid for blind people especially for math.

[AI] Nations must protect their children, not their reputations, ByLaurie Ahern

2012-05-20 Thread avinash shahi
Nations must protect their children, not their reputations
By Laurie Ahern, Monday, May 21, 5:31 AMThe Washington Post
Laurie Ahern is president of Disability Rights International, a
Washington-based group that provided technical assistance to the
British broadcaster ITV in the making of its 2008 documentary.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/nations-must-protect-their-children-not-their-reputations/2012/05/20/gIQA6S51dU_story.html
The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, seems to be in hot water again. A
Turkish court has accused her of “acquiring footage and violating the
privacy” of children in a Turkish state-run orphanage. Her trial began
two weeks ago in Ankara in absentia, following Britain’s refusal to
extradite the former royal. The charges, which carry a maximum
sentence of up to 22 1 / 2 years in prison , are a result of her
participation in an undercover documentary that aired on Britain’s ITV
in 2008 , exposing abuses in the facility.

The hypocrisy of the Turkish government in prosecuting the duchess,
who courageously exposed torture and neglect of Turkish children, is
appalling. Turkish officials seem concerned with the privacy of
children, most of whom have intellectual and physical disabilities,
even as they violate those children’s most basic human rights.

Tom Toles cartoons for May 2012: The latest cartoons from the Washington Post.
.In 2005, after an almost two-year investigation, the organization I
lead, Disability Rights International (DRI), released a report titled
“Behind Closed Doors: Human Rights Abuses in Psychiatric Facilities,
Orphanages and Rehabilitation Centers in Turkey.” It documented the
abusive treatment of children and adults locked away and forgotten in
state facilities.

In the course of our investigation, I saw starving and emaciated
children who, because of their disabilities, were unable to feed
themselves and were frequently left unfed. I was told by staff that
when many of these children became ill, they were no longer bathed or
taken out of their cribs, denied medical care and left to die.
Children were permanently tied into beds, and those who were immobile,
such as children with cerebral palsy or spina bifida, spent their
entire lives lying in cribs. There were rooms where children were
splayed across the floors, devoid of a single toy or activity. Naked
children and teenagers were hosed down like animals in groups — all
ages and both sexes simultaneously. Babies and toddlers who scratched,
hit and bit themselves — a result of mind-numbing boredom and lack of
stimulation — had their hands “covered” by plastic liter bottles that
had been cut in half and duct-taped around the children’s wrists.
Medical procedures such as skin sutures, electro-shock treatments and
teeth extractions were done without anesthesia. Children with
disabilities “don’t feel pain,” I was told by staff, including one
doctor.

As a result of our findings, Turkey did stop the use of electro-shock
treatment without anesthesia. However, many of these same abuses were
documented by Ferguson and ITV three years later.

While these abuses are truly egregious, Turkey is not the only place
where children with disabilities receive cruel treatment. Our group
has documented similar human rights violations of institutionalized
children in both developed and developing countries — members of the
European Union and some nations seeking accession; in Africa, Asia,
Eastern Europe, Latin America and even the United States.

It has been our experience that institutional or governmental
authorities who deny permission to take photographs and/or video on
the grounds that they are protecting a person’s “privacy” are actually
acting to protect themselves from public exposure. The same
authorities often deny residents of institutions much more fundamental
choices about their lives. Detentions are often illegal, and a broad
array of human rights are often violated in institutions, as was the
case in Turkey.

When visiting many of these institutions around the world, including
in Turkey, members of our group are often besieged by residents
begging us to tell their story, asking us to take their photos or
video, and surreptitiously passing us notes pleading for help.

Children with disabilities hidden away in closed institutions have no
voice, no choice and no control. They are the population most
vulnerable to abuse at the hands of state actors. Accordingly, DRI has
launched a worldwide campaign to end the institutionalization of
children and seeks to challenge underlying policies that lead to
abuses against children on a global scale.

International human rights law promises children with disabilities
that they will be protected from torture and abuse. The United States,
European Union members and those seeking accession, such as Turkey,
need to attend to the real issue at hand, which is not protecting the
privacy of dying children in
