VoiceOver on the Mac or on the iPad doesn't do any of the advanced formatting
stuff. It even doesn't recognise tables in Pages on the Mac which is Apple's

I don't think it handles track changes at all. Some non visually challenged
senior lawyers were mentioning that the only problem with I-pads is that you
cannot save and accept/reject track changes in documents. This is all I know.
The software does not allow it. Therefore I don't think that voiceover has
much to do with the problem.

2012-11-19 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello,

I think, I have to discard my desktop soon, or at least, I have to upgrade it
at a cost of about Rs. 15,000. I can purchase an ordinary laptop or a netbook
for Rs. 20,000 or Rs. 25,000. It requires les space. I have a Dell Vostro
laptop.

What do you think, is desktop more durable than laptop?

[AI] sharing a frustrating issue

2012-11-19 Thread Nikita Vaid
Dear all,

I have been irritated and frustrated from a few days for an
accessibility related issue and wanted to share with you all to se if
any action could be drawn out for the same.

Actually my residence is on the 11th floor of a 12 storied tower. Very
recently around 1 week ago only a new elevator [lift] was installed in
our building due to the improper functioning of the old lift.

The old lift was an automatic one and quite user friendly. It had
buttons for navigating though not Braille embossed but I had got use to
moving alone in the lift.

However, This new lift has a complete touch screen panel display and no
tactile provision at all leave aside the auditory or Braille system.

Now the condition is that even in case of emergency I am not able to
operate the lift by my self and had to be dependent all the time on some
sighted company.

When I spoke to my secretary and other committee members of the society
they told me that don't worry there will be some lift man all the time
in the lift. But I don't think that's a practical solution.

I have been living in this building since many years and have been
moving independently also, my blindness is well known in the building,
but now my movements have been restricted.

Just wanted to know whether is there any provision or a mandate in law
that such buildings should have accessible elevators? What should be my
action to this?

Thanks and warm Regards,

Nikita Vaid Raut,

Re: [AI] sharing a frustrating issue

2012-11-19 Thread Preeti Monga

Hello Nikita,

First of all we need to try and solve the actual issue at hand. The law can
be looked at by and by and taken up.

My suggestion is that you take help from a sighted person and get him/her to
help you place
Tiny stick on 'bindis' on the places where you have the floor numbers on
the touch panel. I know people may try to pull them off but for that you may
take the chance of putting up a notice explaining that these binndees are
put there to guide people with less/no vision to independently operate the
lift.
There is no harm trying this, I am sure it will work.

Please use the smallest Binndees available.

I use these on all touch panels on all things where there is no
indication for operating.

Warmly
Preeti

Subject: [AI] sharing a frustrating issue

On some laptops fn+f8 or some other function key with the fn key turns on or
off the monitor. On my dell vostro, I could not find out any such
combination. However, I can do it in Windows 7. Follow these steps:

Press Window logo key + p for Projection Options dialogue box.

It has four options - Computer only, Duplicate, Extend, and Projector only.
Use Arrow keys or the Tab key to locate the last option and press Enter on
it.

Windows will warn you that no projector is detected with the Revert button
selected. Tab over to the Keep Changes button and activate it using Enter.

When you want, you can turn the monitor back on using the same procedure.
Select Computer only in the third step instead of Projector only option

Subject: [AI] TISS Conducts CET in Braille

Dear Accessindians,
Greetings!
I am coming online after a long time. But this time I am coming out with
some interesting piece of info with regard to the CET--Common Entrance
Test to be conducted by our institute--Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
As you all would be aware that TISS conducts a All India level CET to
select its new students every year.
This year we are conducting the CET through online. The CET is scheduled
on 13 January, 2013.
Please go through the TISS website at www.tiss.edu and look at the details
of the Admision Process for the M.A. Programmes for the Academic year
2013-15.
You are expected to fill in the Application form online. Please follow the
steps carefully and choose your options and fill up the form Its a very
easy procedure and each stage provides you very clear guidance for filling
the form. Once you are done with the form you are expected to download the
details and take print out of the same.

The last date for submission of the form is 17 November 2012.

TISS would conduct an Orientation Programme for students from the
marginalised sections of the society by the second week of December.

Now, here's the most interesting part of the whole procedure.
As I had mentioned that TISS is conducting the CET online, there is a
choice for written mode and the candidates have to specify that in the
Application Form.
As for the Candidates with Visual Impairment is concerned, we are
providing the Question Paper in Braille and the candidates have to ask
their writers to just tick the right option.
At the same time, we also acknowledge the fact that every one may not be
comfortable with Braille as there are persons with VI who would not have
the opportunity to learn Braille. Hence, we are allowing them to take the
Writer's support.
In order to identify the candidates who need Braille Question Sheets, our
Administrative Staff would contact the VI candidates personally over their
contact numbers and find out their need and make the arrangements
accordingly.

So please make use of this opportunity and do well in the CET.
The selected candidates would have to appear for Group Discussion and
Personal Interview in the 3rd week of March.
For any further query you may feel free to contact me on my email off the
group and call me at 09444310134. As I am in Chennai now I am using this
number until 19 November.

With best wishes,

Dr. A.Rambabu,
Assistant Professor, Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and
Inclusive Policies,

Re: [AI] sharing a frustrating issue

2012-11-19 Thread harish

Hi
Nikita

Most of the newer lifts have accessability features built in. However, the
owner of the lift has to especially ask for it to be enabled.
Accordingly, you mention this to your secratary and ask them to give a
presentation about it.

Later on you'll can take call on which of the provisions to be enabled and
the cost / benefit for it.

Bring about the realisation, any such changes is only going to make more
usable to one and all and it is not for you exclusively.

By the way, who is the manufacturer of the lift? Probably, you can yourself
dig more info on this.

Subject: [AI] sharing a frustrating issue

[AI] Biometric and Accessibility

2012-11-19 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Hello all,
As some of you people might be aware of the fact that very soon, maybe in a
couple of months from now, all colleges under the University of Delhi are going
to introduce biometric system to control the absenteeism and teachers
attendance. What I've heard from some unconfirmed sources that the biometric
machines that are being procured are not finger based as most of them are
today, most probably they would be either eye contact based or face recognition
based. I'd like to know what would be the choices/remedies for the people with
visual impairment if the latter types of machines are installed, especially if
they are eye contact based. has anybody so far come across this kind of system?
Is it really manageable the latter types of machines for the above mentioned
category of people?

[AI] Stopping music on websites

Hi friends,
Some websites start playing some music as the page is loaded.
How do we stop the music so that we are able to read the contents of the site

Is there any shortcut key stroke to stop playing the background music?
Thank you,

Subject: [AI] Anybody Tried Android 4.1 Jellybean Mobile?

Hello friends, A lot is being said and written about wonderful
accessibility and user friendliness of the new Android Mobiles Version
4.1, also known as Jellybean. I even visited some mobile shops, and
tried to get first hand experience of the same. But could not make out
much about it even inspite of sighted help by the Samsung company
agents. So I wish to know whether any friend has had a better
experience with the same?
As of now, I have seen one Samsung model, namely Samsung
Galaxy Chat, which has a qwerty keypad along with a touch screen
keyboard. Do you think a visually challenged person can use all the
features and apps of this handset or any other Android model? are
there sufficient Accessibility applications available for it? kindly
share your experiences and views.
Regards.
  Pradeep Gupta.

Re: [AI] difficulty in reading The Hindu Newspaper: help, please.

2012-11-19 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
Better than mobile version is to get to index and read all sections.
To do so, go to the hindu home page, hit today's news and then
index. Ones you are there, then you should be able to navigate
around various sections by pressing letter H or appropriate headings
by pressing their associated keys. For example, 1 for heading1.

Vetri.

Re: [AI] Stopping music on websites

2012-11-19 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Try the Esc key. Tis is the key for stopping background music. It does not
always work though. Moreover, it stops the page from loading if it has not
already been loaded.

Subject: [AI] Stopping music on websites

Hi friends,
Some websites start playing some music as the page is loaded.
How do we stop the music so that we are able to read the contents of the
site with Jaws without getting disturbed?

Is there any shortcut key stroke to stop playing the background music?
Thank you,
Rishi.

Thank you Sir,

Even if I have no difficulty in the mobile version, your message
helped me a lot for a better experience!

Better than mobile version is to get to index and read all sections.
To do so, go to the hindu home page, hit today's news and then
index. Ones you are there, then you should be able to navigate
around various sections by pressing letter H or appropriate headings
by pressing their associated keys. For example, 1 for heading1.

 5. after the page gets loaded press N key on the keyboard to reach to

Re: [AI] issue related to firefox

2012-11-19 Thread Amiyo Biswas

You can try the Save link as option from the context menu.

First, locate the exact link from the link list invoked by Insert+F7 key.

Once you have reached the link in the link list, use Alt+m to move to link.

Then press the Application key for the context menu.

Arrow down to Sae link as option and hit Enter.

It should invoke the standard Download option.

Alternately, you can modify options with caution.

Go to Options submenu under Tools menu.

use right arrow a few times to access Application section.

Use Tab key twice for the list of file types.

Arrow down to mp3 format sounds.

Tab over to the next control. it is a combo box for options. the default
option should be Always ask. Use down arrow to select Save file.

Tab over to the Ok button and activate it.

It should always try to save all mp3 files.

however, some sites may not allow this much of liberty.
