Re: [AI] Braille stickers in trains for visually-challenged

2013-01-21 Thread Kotian, H P
Hi Srini

You can count on these to start until others adds up to these:

* Gap between train and platform to be reduced to avoid fatal accidents
* Floor of the platform and coach to be on the same level. Especially
usefully for wheel chair users
* Gap between 2 compartments to be filled up to avoid fatal accidents
especially to the blind
* Tactile skirting along the edge of the platform to avoid falling of
visually impaired on the railway track.
* Tactile markings on the platform should lead from compartment for
disabled to bridges, escalators, wash-rooms and exits.
* Inside the train, in addition to the station announcement, it should
announce the direction of the platform, give a steady tone when it is on the
platform and make a rising tone when the train is about to start.
* Display of Train information and announcements should be prominently
displayed so as to enable hearing impaired to get access.
* Auditory and Visual announcement of upcoming stations in the train
* There should be a separate help-desk for the disabled on all stations
for providing assistance to the disabled including wheel chair and escort to
the blind. There should be a centralized toll free telephone number which would
also be coordinating with these help-desks.
* Lift to be accessible for all including wheelchair users to use the
cross over bridges and move to platforms
* Automated ticket facility should be accessible to all kinds of PWD
including visually impaired
Online ticketing should also be available while availing concessions provided.
* Information Kiosks at Stations should be accessible to all as per
Accessibility Guidelines
* Provide Sign Language support at help-desk for hearing impaired users
* Train schedule available in alternate formats
*   Accessible Toilets for PWDs
*   Accessible Tactile Maps
* Berth Number in Accessible format
* All waiting rooms, cafeterias, night stay accommodation and other
facilities provided at the station must be accessible to wheelchair users swell.
* have a boarding device such as a portable ramp or a hydraulic lift
available on each platform to be used by wheelchair users wanting to board the
train. Coolies must be trained in using it
* Coolies must be sensitized in assisting disabled passengers
Stations should designate reserved parking place for disabled persons.

Amiyo,
That would be responsibility of education or any other department that deal
with publications. How would that come from Railways except that if you are
looking for any Railway publications.

My honest opinion is that we only be able to get success only, when we
encourage all efforts either small or big as Harish mentioned.
Thanks,

Re: [AI] Braille stickers in trains for visually-challenged

2013-01-21 Thread Amiyo Biswas
i think, it is easier to ask someone than groping for Braille sticker. in
india traines are not ever absolutely vacant. It's a good sign though that
the Railway is remembering us. The government should rather put emphasis on
production of Braille books. That would help us a lot.

All,
I'm trying to figure out which team is working on this. Just called up 3
officers and I was now asked to contact CPRO in Chennai. I'll do so later
in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, can we list down our suggestions and can someone compile them
in

a single document? Can we have due date as end of the week 26th January,
2013 to get the document ready and email the same to Railways. I'll put in
efforts to find the appropriate personnel, who would handle this.

Thanks,

Assuming you are asking this for your GMail account. Perhaps, you can
create labels (folders) and move important emails to that folder. If you
have configure your account to outlook, then too, you can create folders

Re: [AI] Some Media Reports on Sambhavana Led Struggle of Disabled in DU

2013-01-21 Thread Vikas Gupta
They will have to answer this anyhow in CCPD or if we go to Delhi High
Court. Moreover, the movement needs to be intensified. This is in
itself a paradigm shift that people are learning about the gloomy
picture in DU. So far, a rosey picture was being creating in the
media. We have got many evidences of the fact that the current turn is
frustrating DU officials. In fact, many places, where students demands
were kept in the cold box are now being taken upt expeditiously. I
have been told that the University Bus Service has been now made
available to some private blind hostels where it was discontinued for
quite some time. Similarly, in the faculty of Law, students were
demanding for last three years the instalation of a computer for them
in the library. Nothing happened. However, imediately after the hunger
strike, they have started the work of preparing such a computer for
visually challenged students. I have also been told that the work in
EOC has also become little more faster after this demonstrationn.
This list I am not drawing to be complaisant. On the contary, I am
suggesting that the logic of mass action works in very complicated
ways; and in the long run, it of course brings the target nearer. The
EOC and DU official are not agreeing to these two basic demands:
disability summit and empowered committee, because they are afraid
that the first will expose the hollowness of their claims; and the
second one make EOC less-important if not redundant. In truth, both
are baseless fears.

Hi

I welcome each and every effort on the path to make an inclusive society. The
effort and impact may be big or small, however, it is a step in the right
direction.

Ideally, the railways and authorities should reach us and include us during the
design phase. However, we know for a fact that may not happen. It is therefore
necessary for us to call on them and get it done as per our needs.

Can we be driving this? Or do we simply keep complaining and waiting for

Bhavani,

I think every effort start somewhere and we should make sure that results in
more efforts. So I welcome this start but urge railways to include end users
for research.

Secondly, how can we generalize that everyone would be good at calculations and
how do you know which side of the coach you see seat no. 1?

Bhavani,

I think every effort start somewhere and we should make sure that results in
more efforts. So I welcome this start but urge railways to include end users
for research.

Secondly, how can we generalize that everyone would be good at calculations and
how do you know which side of the coach you see seat no. 1?

it is no need of a braille levels on seats, once you remember the
multiplication of 8 in sl and 3a coaches and 6 in 2a coaches, it is not
difficult to search the desired seat. in 1a coaches seat numbers are not at
all required. with this braille level railway is giving a lollipop to crying
babies, not a complete food. in media they will also gain popularity and

Hi All,

New Delhi, Jan 20:

In a first initiative of its kind, Indian Railways is likely to
introduce Braille stickers in trains for visually-challenged
passengers to facilitate their travel.

"We are planning to provide Braille stickers inside the coaches for
assisting visually impaired passengers," a senior Railway Ministry
official said.

"We are in the process of finalising details of introducing Braille
stickers. This is the first time that Indian Railways is exploring
such initiative," the official added.

The initiative is likely to be announced in the Rail Budget 2013-14, he
said.

Braille is a writing system which enables visually challenged and
partially sighted people to read and write through touch.

Recognising the needs of physically challenged persons, the Railways
has also decided to provide special arrangements in all mail and
express trains to facilitate their travel.

"Railways is manufacturing coaches with specially designed
compartments and toilets for passengers with disabilities. Now second
class luggage room coaches are being modified to facilitate boarding
of trains by differently abled travellers," he said.

All mail and express trains with modified coaches, known as SLRD
(second class luggage rake for disabled) coaches, will have reserved
seats for physically challenged persons, official said.

Doors of SLRD coaches are being widened to facilitate the boarding of
passengers using wheel-chairs.

Railways had made a commitment to a parliamentary committee to make
special provision for facilitating train boarding for physically
challenged passengers.

There are total four seats in unreserved category in SLRD coaches and
now these have been earmarked exclusively for the physically
challenged passengers and their escorts.

"Till date approximately 2,300 such coaches have been manufactured and
at least one SLRD is provided in almost every mail and express train.
Similarly Garib Rath trains have been provided with AC compartment in
power cars for differently abled passengers," he said.

Re: [AI] Update on Talking ATM

2013-01-21 Thread jaison bellarmine
Hai friends,
Recently SBT in Kerala also has started installing talking ATM. SBT
Karimpuzha branch at Kottapuram near to HKCMM school for the Blind in
Palakkad district of Kerala has installed one. The blind teachers of
the school under the leadership of Mr Anil, assistant teacher,
explored the system and found them quite accessible. all of them used
the ATM with out any difficulty. The bank authorities told that many
ATM machines are installed elsewhere in Kerala and if there is braille
incriptions on the machine you can ask the bank authorities to confirm
whether it is fully functional. If not they will make it fully
acccessible on your demand.

dear friends,

it is a good initiative taken by the Railways. but they should be very
careful about the sticking of the stickers. i am saying because most
of the work in india is done without any research. after spending
money, they feel that this is not useful and the valuable money would
be waisted.

I believe first the Indian Railway should grant provision for the

2013-01-21 Thread Rohit Trivedi
Dear friends,
Arushi A Bhopal based voluntary organization took this initiative of
sticking Braille labels for seat numbers in Bhopal Nizamuddin Express. In
the year 2001. It continued to maintain it for next 7 -8 years on its own.
This task has to be undertaken on regular basis because coaches change, or
passengers temper With the stickers. Coach Numbers may not be done in
Braille because Coaches are not train specific That is why they write coach
number with chalk.
Railway authorities permitted Arushi volunteers to paste the labels but did
not provide any financial assistance for maintenance or to replicate the
idea. It therefore became an unviable option for the organization to
continue on the project on its own.
This initiative was widely covered. In media.

2013-01-21 Thread Kiran Kaja
This is an interesting development. I hope they do some research and follow
guidelines about placing these braille labels at correct locations. I live
in the UK and they do have braille labels in most trains here. But I find
that in a lot of cases, these labels are almost useless because of their
location. The other day for instance, I was on a train from London and it
had a label on the toilet door. Unfortunately, this label was so high that
it is totally useless. I am 6 foot 2 inches tall and the label was almost
level with my nose. what they did apparently is to use the same sticker for
the printed label and braille and obviously the printed label had to be
placed high for visibility. Luckily in this country, they take feedback on
these issues seriously. I complained to the train operating company and they
got back to me saying that they are going to affix additional braille labels
near the door handles.

Further, having braille stickers externally is a good idea as long as they
use strong enough glue to resist the dry heat as well as wet weather. But
for external use, metal plates are far more durable. But I don't know how
practical it is to have coach numbers in braille externally. Coach numbers
change based on train formation and rolling stock being used that particular
day. I hope we don't end up in a situation where the braille label says S1
but the coach is actually s15 .

Hi Srini
Yes, the survey is limited to use of assistive technology using the Core
Banking solution and other application at Banks.

Harish,
Yes, that can be done; but it would be good for more questions for low
vision, for instance, there can be certain jobs where user do not require
computer but will be able to perform with low vision. Unless the survey is
limited to use of technology alone.

hello,
if this is the case, then i really wonder how far it going to help to
board the proper coach for visually challenged, as its going to be
affixed inside the coach. if it would be adjacent to the door facing
the outside then before boarding in to the coach, it may help such vi
persons to read and know the coach number.
thanks,
mukesh.
