[AI] Stopping jaws from reading sections leaving uniform tables and deleting images in docx

2013-09-28 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hi

I have converted a pdf file in to a word file. But have resultantly
facing some reading hurdles.

1. JAWS keeps announcing sections and tables every other line. Why
does that happen and can I change any jaws setting so jaws only
announces uniform tables?
2. This file also contain some images which of no use to me. So how
can delete all of them in one go?
Please note : the objective is that I should be able to read only text
and tables in proper tabular form if they are there. So when we stop
section and other useless announcements, it does not mess up uniform
table reading.

Appreciate an early reply.

Regards

[AI] Using Alt-Control-Delete was a mistake. Bill Gate confess

2013-09-28 Thread Neelima Surve
Hello!

Pasting the article about using Alt-Control-Delete.

Read and Enjoy.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has confessed that setting
Control-Alt-Delete as a way to log in to Windows was a mistake..
NEW DELHI: Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has acknowledged that setting
Control-Alt-Delete as a way to log in to Windows was a mistake. Gates
made the comment during a talk at a Harvard University fundraising
event.

We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM
keyboard design didn't want to give us our single button ... and so we
programmed at a low level ... it was a mistake, said Gates.

During an hour-long interview with David Rubenstein, Gates also spoke
about his early days at Microsoft, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
and his friendship with Warren Buffet.

During the interview, Gates also claimed the two companies did some
clever things too. We were able to experiment with a lot of stuff,
but more on the software side than the hardware, said Gates.

Gates attended Harvard as an undergraduate. However, he dropped out to
start Microsoft. Decades later, the university awarded him an honorary
degree.

David Bradley, a designer of the original IBM PC, is said to have
invented the Control-Alt-Delete. During IBM's 20th anniversary of the
IBM PC, Bradley had reportedly said he may have invented
alt-control-delete combination for login, but it was Gates who made it
famous.

Hi Eki,
1. Please mention which software was used for conversion.
2. Explore the software's settings to get rid of images during conversion.
3. Customize jaws to yourpreference for your documents using the jaws
plus V keystrokes.
4. Select objects by pressing Ctrl plus shift plus O, which opens a
list of images and enter on it and press delete key.

in India many visually impaired face these problems like from their

take science for their career, the kartik is the best example for
those parents and all of the indian educational system that a VH

Re: [AI] signs or thumb marks for the VI on important documents

On fine scrutiny, one can distinguish between putting a stamp and making a
signature. Without prior permission from an appropriate authority, one
cannot use stamp in place of signatures.

Hi

I forgot to share one more idea. It’s a simple one :

You can tell a stamp maker to make a stamp of your signature with out
borders to it. There are stamps available with out edge boundary and
self contained ink. It’s quite portable. However, yu do have risk
being denied in front of any particular authority. Therefore, request
for opinions from legal experts.

And was suggested by someone, you can use a stemcil card which has a
cut in a plastic card according to your signature lines but because I
haven’t used it, I wonder how will you be able to deal with
overlapping curves.

Regs.

On 9/27/13, Ekinath Khedekar ekin...@gmail.com wrote:

Hi

Please don’t give in to insistence of signing the document
immediately. You can even magistrate or any authority to render you
time as you are a VI.

I use both thumb and signature together or mostly separately depending
on significance, long term/short term financial impact and room for
defense in case of litigation.

Firstly, I am not aware of any rule denying executor (signing person)
to not sign and stamp a thumb together. So in the matters of property
I use both signature and thumb impression. In fact, sub-divisional
registrar Dombivli had appreciated this idea. They do ask for both but
some sighted people avoid it.

Secondly, I use 3 signatures 1 frivolous for surveys, feedback forms
etc. 2 for serious but no financial implications and 3 for most
serious matters which have long-term large financial or other impacts.
In such matters, it is better to use both signature and thumb
impression.

Other aspects are, what does the service provider want for example, as
someone mentioned for d-mat, credit cards and loan (in my case) I used
my second signature as I have liability to pay and not gain from the
transaction.

Importantly in my case, the process wasn’t moving ahead in all 3 cases
as I had thumb impression on all KYC documents like PAN card, passport
etc. But I got my signature approved by my parent bank and got all 3
processes through.
Basically, your parent bank through some form attests and approves
that signature used for above mentioned services matches with the
signatures used for cheques and other transactions through the parent
bank and that’s enough.

Let me note here, that I have to get at least one of my KYC document
based on my one of my signatures. So I can avoid going to my parent
bank to approve the matching of signatures everytime. Advice is to get
at least get your one KYC document based on your confirmed signature
so you can use it wherever signature is mandatory for smooth process.

Another important point, have you asked signature verifier that what
does he look for when he verifies the signature? I had and the answer
was :
They do not strictly look for 100% matching of signature. What they do
look for use curves and their sharp or curvy turns and number of turns
in the signature. What I mean to say is that signature does not
necessarily have to be an initial letter alphabet etc. It can be any
unique scribbling that u only can do more or less in the same manner
everytime. They would only look for similarities.

Mind you, these are my ways and in my opinion, they are all right. If
anybody has any suggestion I will appreciate.

Bottomline, I use all the possible service and transactions available
to sighted people and do not want to be stranded for a want of
circulars as was the case when I had to open myd-mat account.
Icicidirect showed me NSDL/CSDL circular and denied me d-mat on the
basis of my thumb impression. So I had to give them my signature and
with another hand an “Angootha” saying dude I have it with or with out
“ANgootha” :P

Do please as I earlier said guide me if I am wrong…

~Cheers

hello,
while converting the pages with my adobe acrobat pro, it gives me the
option whether to include images in output or not. so i simply tell
acrobat to skip images and select the option text only. this removes
all the graphics which can't be recognised by ocr.

not sure whether it still reads the sections or text column etc as i
don't have such document handy to test. so if you can send or share
the same, i can try it out with it and let you know about the results.
thanks,

So there's anyway to know which page i am on?

Object dletion worked, but would have liked a trick to delete all in
one shot as i've got 36 objects in the doc.

 Hi Eki,
 1. Please mention which software was used for conversion.
 2. Explore the software's settings to get rid of images during
 conversion.
 3. Customize jaws to yourpreference for your documents using the jaws

 4. Select objects by pressing Ctrl plus shift plus O, which opens a
list of images and enter on it and press delete key.

 Hi

I have converted a pdf file in to a word file. But have resultantly
 facing some reading hurdles.

1.JAWS keeps announcing sections and tables every other line. Why
does that happen and can I change any jaws setting so jaws only
 announces uniform tables?
2.This file also contain some images which of no use to me. So how
can delete all of them in one go?
Please note : the objective is that I should be able to read only text
and tables in proper tabular form if they are there. So when we stop
section and other useless announcements, it does not mess up uniform
 table reading.

 Appreciate an early reply.

Re: [AI] Need help to extract text from the image

2013-09-28 Thread shyam sharma
Hi sir, I got the below mentioned info about Adobe Acrobat and found
that it is a trial version after 30 days I have to purchase.
If you are using any open source then please share.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro is a such an office tool that lets users create
PDF files, PDF forms or PDF portfolios, as well as combine files into
a PDF, or share them by using SendNow Online or email.

When creating PDF files, users have the possibility to open any
supported file format (including images and multimedia files) and save
them as PDF documents. This can come in handy if, for example, a frame
of a video is captured then saved as a PDF.

Creating a PDF Portfolio offers users five layouts to choose from:
Click-Through, Freeform, Grid, Linear, and Wave. From the content
point of view, the result of the presentation is the same, no matter
which layout you choose as the difference lies in the visual effects
only.

After creating a presentation, it can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat X
Pro, but to actually see the content, each file needs to be extracted
from the portfolio, or opened in Native Application. There is also the
ability to open multiple windows and have multiple projects running
simultaneously.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro comes with a user-friendly interface, and each
function and feature is neatly organized within its own menu or tab,
allowing users to easily locate it. Also, complex actions are
structured into wizards, thus helping people successfully generate PDF
forms or portfolios.

In addition, the software can be used to insert comments, annotations,
signatures or bookmarks to each open PDF file, thus customizing and
adding more information to their documents. When distributing the
files, it also helps if the PDFs are protected by passwords: users can
assign owner and user passwords, strengthening the file protection.

All in all, Adobe Acrobat X Pro provides numerous tools for editing,
personalizing or easily sharing PDF files that can be evaluated for 30
days after which a purchased license is required.

[AI] Blind couple adopt blind orphans - Chicago Tribune

2013-09-28 Thread avinash shahi
Many may have read this true story in the past but who didn't, can read now.
Do you know any couple in India like this one discussed in the piece?
Do inform, please.
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-05-11/news/ct-met-blind-adopting-blind-20110511_1_cta-bus-rupa-lessons
Love is blind inside the two-story brick house on Mulligan Avenue. And
that is why the microwave buttons are marked with Braille. The clocks
in the home all announce the time. And at 7:15 a.m., everyone is
listening carefully for the school bus.

Ten-year-old Rupa is the first to hear it. Oh, the bus is here! she
calls. Her mother rushes to the front window, listening for
confirmation before calling out: That's it!

Rupa grabs her white cane. Six-year-old Aihua reaches down and, guided
by touch alone, pulls on a pair of rubber rain boots. Then Paula
Sprecher hustles them outside. With each step of this hectic
school-day morning, the 49-year-old mother of two helps her daughters
find their way in a world that neither she nor they can see.

Sprecher and her husband, Alan, have been legally blind since birth.
And though Alan had some doubts about fatherhood — would they have
enough to offer a child? — the couple took a leap of faith in 2008 and
adopted Rupa from India. In January, they brought home Aihua from
China.

Both girls are blind, too — Rupa can detect some light, while Aihua
has no vision at all. And that is fine with the Sprechers, who
describe each of their daughters as a gift.

My husband and I, we grew up without sight, Paula explains. This is
so normal to us. We knew there were children out there who were
probably given up (because they were blind), and we wanted to provide
a home for someone like us, for someone we thought we could help.

Helping the girls, the Sprechers know, means pushing them into the
world. And so they teach their daughters how to ride the CTA bus
(listen carefully for each stop, they say), how to identify coins by
their size and weight (This is a dime! says Aihua, correctly), how
to sort the laundry (pin your socks together before you put them in
the wash).

The Sprechers have come to realize that, in the long arc of life,
success rests on a foundation of a thousand little lessons. And so,
day by day, inside the cozy house with the blue shutters, lessons
about dimes and socks become lessons about confidence and
independence. Though she is still learning English, Aihua declares
with perfect pronunciation: I can do it! It's a phrase that makes
her parents smile.

They're going to be functioning in the world someday, says Paula.
We try to teach the kids a routine and let go a little more and
more.

Canes, cues

Letting go isn't always so easy.

At Farnsworth Elementary School, both girls are mainstreamed in
regular classes and receive help from a classroom aide and instruction
in Braille. Sprecher is a teacher who works with the blind at the
school, and so she is never far away.

But on a recent morning, when she popped her head into the music room
to check on Aihua, she couldn't see that that her daughter — who has
only been in school for three months and, because of the language
barrier, can't understand much of what's happening around her — was in
the back of the classroom, looking a little scared and hiding her face
between her knees

Re: [AI] Blind couple adopt blind orphans - Chicago Tribune

2013-09-28 Thread Shireen Irani
hi,
nice to know of some1 who has actually put this into practice. because
for the longest time, i have been nurturing this desire/ dream, to
adopt a blind girl at some point of time in the future, as i believe
i'd understand her needs best, and know how to bring her up, in a near
perfect environment that would maximally fascilitate her growth as a
wonderful able human-being.
of course this is more of a fantacy, but it stems from a genuine
desire for a blind girl-child to really have all the rightful
opportunities to bloom into an unparalleled personality.
i sincerely hope that blind people looking to adopt, do realise this
fact, that we'd really be able to understand and cator to the needs of
blind children more than regular parents i think. and hence it would
be nice to have an open mind in at least considering adopting blind
children. of course its easier said then done, especially since a lot
of parents might expect their children to take care of them once they
grow up.
but this actually does require some serious consideration. thanx for the post.

Many may have read this true story in the past but who didn't, can read

[AI] A Menstrual Kit for Visually Impaired Girls.

2013-09-28 Thread Shireen Irani
May 8, 2013 by Sadhvi Thukral

—The kit is divided into two parts. The first part has tactile
diagrams along with text in Braille and in print. The second part has
a life-sized, three-dimensional model for demonstration and training.

If you thought periods were one of those difficult days of the month
for a girl or a woman, think of a visually impaired girl who has to
manage her periods every month. Realising that menstruation is still
such a taboo subject in Indian society along with the many
restrictions which a girl has to face due to age – old myths, Sadhvi
Thukral, a Delhi based designer decided to work in the field of
providing information about menstruation. During her research, while
studying at the Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi, Sadhvi found that
there weren’t many sources of information available for visually
impaired girls and therefore decided to work in this area.

She designed a kit which could serve as library material and would be
made available at Institutions specialized in the teaching and
training of visual impaired girls. However, this kit is designed in
such a way that parents can also purchase it for their daughters.

The kit is divided into two parts. The first part has tactile diagrams
along with text in Braille and in print. The second part has a
life-sized, three-dimensional model for demonstration and training. It
provides a holistic approach towards providing the basic essential
information about menstruation to visually impaired girls.

Parts of the content used in the Kit are an adaptation of TARSHI’s
books on sexuality and reproductive health. The contents of the kit
have been validated by the students of Saksham Daksh, Noida, India.

‘Kahani Her Mahine Ki’, as the name suggests, is a natural phenomena
which reoccurs every month in most women. This kit covers the subject
of menstruation and helps girls in the effective management of their
periods.

The kit comprises of:

1. Tactile diagrams and material in the form of Information Slides,
with labels in Braille and in print of the different parts of the
body. The Information Slates fit into a box with slides.

2. Each slate has text in Braille for the visually impaired and in
text for those who are not.

3. It also contains a life-sized model of the human body for demonstration.

The kit contains informative slides made out of plywood. Plywood is
readily available in the local markets and can be constructed simply
by a trained carpenter. It contains five slides. A user can easily
take out the slides one by one in serial order, beginning from the top
to the bottom. Each slide is labelled with numbers to make it easy for
the user to put it back.

These slides explain:
• How to keep your private parts clean
• Kinds of pads available
• How to wear a pad
• How to dispose a used pad and how to wear a tampon
• How to dispose a used tampon
• How to make and use reusable homemade sanitary options
• How to wash reusable pads and pouches for pads
• Suitable Panties

The diagrams seen on the slides are made out of terracotta and paper
mash. It is 100% sustainable and is made by local artisans. It is a
great source of income and can be adapted and styled in accordance
with any ethnicity, based on the kind of clay modelling or pottery
style prominent in the area. It is also a rapidly degenerating craft
and this is a sure-shot way of reviving it.

The kit focuses on the bodily and hormonal changes in adolescent girls
leading up to menstruation. It informs the reader about various
products available in the market and even suggests home remedies for
the same. A part of the training focuses on teaching the audience
proper methods of usage and disposal of the products.

Life-size Model:

The life-size model is a replication of the lower torso of the female
body complete with genitals made out of waste paper and silicon. A
special mechanism has been worked out to demonstrate the real process
of menstruation in the human body.

Sadhvi Thukarl is a Delhi based designer. She worked on “Kahani Har
Mahine ki” in association with Vikalp Design, the kit is documented by
the Museum of Menstruation. This project also won the ‘Most Innovative
Award’ at Openworks. Sadhvi is also looking for collaborations in
taking this project further .

You can get in touch with her regarding the same at: sadhvithuk...@gmail.com

Dear,
I too tried alot in that direction but couldn't find anyone. at last I went
to a goldsmith and asked him to cut my signature on a thin (not very thin)
copper plate. After few days of hardship he made it for me.
My job made easier. You may also try the trick.Mostly in Banks and other
financial institutions it becomes troublesome.

Unknown to many, but one of the main causes of a slow Windows PC is a
