Perhaps Enable India could have and should have requested authorities to cover the drain in front of their office. Having said this, I would emphatically state that it is wrong for us to accuse Enable India to simply be interested in taking donations and grants. Do you know the background and kind of the work Enable India does? It has become extremely fashionable for people to loosely hurl criticism on NGOs. I would like to state here that Enable India is responsible for a number of our blind friends today taking up fairly paying jobs in the Private sector. Their training programmes are of high quality. They not only have setup skill development programmes but also are constantly working out work place solutions. To generate high quality training programmes, you need good quality professionals and to hire and keep high quality professionals, you need funds. Enable India is doing good work and need to be appreciated. Again I say, it is definitely within our rights to point out that Enable India could and should have played a proactive role in closing the drain in front of their office but certainly none of us have the right to accuse them of being being merely donation/grant focused. Let us be mature in our statements. Access India is a public forum and we must be responsible with our comments. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of P. Imagine then, the plight of a blind person who uses a white cane to move around. Misfortune struck Timy Sebastian, a 31-year-old blind postgraduate from Kerala, who had come to the city to attend a computer training programme at EnAble, when he fell inside the five-foot deep drain and suffered a fractured humerus on the right arm and underwent a surgery. While EnAble is housed in the second floor, the building is also occupied by a medical transcription company, Lake System, in the first floor. Concerned over the difficulties being faced by the visually impaired people coming to EnAble India, staff at the medical transcription company had made repeated requests to cover the shoulder drain which was kept open for almost two months for desilting work. Had the BBMP not turned a blind eye to the dangers of the uncovered drain, Timy wouldn't have faced such a near disastrous mishap. And in a pointer to its callousness, the spot where the mishap occurred is still lying partially uncovered, even though Timy's visually impaired friends are still frequenting the EnAble trust. MISHAP MOCKS AT HC RULING Timy, a native of Kottayam in Kerala, had come to Koramangala to attend the training programme two months ago. He was put up at a paying guest accommodation in the vicinity, which was almost one kilometre away. Though completely blind, he is independent and uses a white cane for mobility. He is also comfortable using public transport as well as other facilities. On July 25, around 12.30 pm, Timy had finished his class at the institute and was stepping out to have lunch. Descending from the steps and stretching his cane out to find his way on the road, Timy noticed his cane wasn't coming in contact with s

Re: [AI] Help: Want to learn Hindi typing on Laptop
hi, Use what you like, but google input creates problem in some applications. Saraswati is far better than this. A screen reader user must not use any tool which has the following characteristics. 1. If the tool needs two or more key press to type a single letter. 2. If a tool generates two or more letters in a single key press. Better to use a tool with a single key press and single letter generation. This will lead a distinct speech out of key press and the typed letter. Google input has the above first characteristic. I can enlist about ten Hindi typing tools. Just pointing a particular is not difficult, but a new user must choose a system on the ground of positive and negative aspect. If you do not consider other aspect, why to look here and there. Hindi typing system is already in each machine in which Microsoft windows after xp is installed. Instead google input, Use what is in your machine and it will be available in each computer of the world with window installation. Hey Avinash, If you need a shortcut and don't want to learn Hindi keyboard layout, you can also go for "Google Hindi Input Tools"! Its free, easy, and Ossum! Download from Google and install. Your internet must be on during the instaalation. After instalation, use left Alt+ Left Shift to toggle between Google keyboard layout and Windows (US) layout. While typing with Google keyboard for Hindi (Google Hindi Input Tools), you can symply type in Roman the way you type Hindi messages in English on your Symbian phones and the Google will do the rest. Do get back if you need further clerification and/ any other info related to this. With best regards, Satguru ___,__.___ "Life's battle do not always go, to the stronger or faster man. hi, yes, the open source may not be utilized by every users. But the rest screen readers is not modifiable/customizable even by an experts too. If any thing is not 100% that should neither consider nor compare with a thing having a constant figure of zero for ever. If a common user is unable to handle the source codes, it is not fault of the software system itself. >From the perspective of software, it is for all and by all. Re: [AI] Windows Eyes
hi, Window-eye is second in circulation in USA after Jaws. Its magnifier the zoom-text is the best among all yet I had used. I personally had tested more than a dozen of magnifiers. About the screen reader, it is something like coca-cola and pepsi or close up and colgate toothpaste or wheel and surf washing powder! Fundamentally no difference but different in personal taste! However, NVDA has its own features. All other are commercial product. Every thing is in their hands. Nvda, an open source, yourself can modify as wish. Here is an my experience. First issue: One of VI Nepali telephoned me and expressed his problem. His small notetaker machine had function keys up to f11 (no f12 key in keyboard). As a result he is unable to know the time and date. He wanted a solution from me. Within no time I assigned shift+f11 key for time/date, compile the nvda and send to him. Within hours, his problem got solved. Next issue: One of VI fellow from Pakistan complain me about jaws not working in Urdu. I checked every things. Concluded that it was a problem of localization of jaws. I wrote to the technical chief of jaws. After my second inquiry, a month later, he asked me to send my license number. when I gave my purchased proof of jaws, then he requested me to send one paragraph of Urdu text. I did instantly but Now six month has been passed, no response. In my strong complain for no response, he confessed that the person in charge f localization was assigned for short term and after the release of jaws15, he has gone. According to him, he may return for jaws 16 and it may be consider then. Now compare the service got by our two friends. Re: [AI] Help: Want to learn Hindi typing on Laptop
hi, Among the many Hindi typing tools available; my Varnamala is the most easiest and specially made for screen reader users. Though you can use any tool but you may face problems. Either use my Varnamala which is specially designed for screen reader users otherwise do not go anywhere just open your own computer. A Hindi typing tool already exists inside your computer. Add Hindi language from control panel+regional language+language option, press leftside alt+shift whenever you need to type Hindi, press the same key for English typing again. No need to download any thing from anywhere! But you will not get any hint or help in this tool. It is a in-built system of windows. There is no rule of key location, you have to remember every thing by practice. If you use my Hindi Varnamala, you can find a ten page long help file about typing rule in unicode system and many more. It is rule based, very easy, specially made for those who are familiar with English keyboard. It is workable in any kind of applications. Further more, if you learn to type my Hindi Varnamala, you can type the following language texts without learning anything more. Re: [AI] Windows Eyes
Hi. I have started to use NVDA more frequently these days. Although I have never used Window Eyes, many people were praising on a mailing list NVDA to be better and more responsive than Window Eyes. NVDA is free (even open source) so most people who have tested both screen readers prefer NVDA (according to what I have read). In terms of adjusting to different screen readers, I had read somewhere that there is a keyboard layout in Window Eyes that uses the keystrokes used by JAWS (this keyboard layout is there for easy migration from JAWS to Window Eyes). Is that true? Also, in a screen reader survey I read that Window Eyes was used by only 6% of screen reader users, lagging behind NVDA and JAWS. So it seems that Window Eyes is not used by many. Is there any full-time Window Eyes user on this list? Re: [AI] IDM help!
it depends a bit on which version of Firefox and internet download manager you are using at present. if you are using Firefox version 31.0 or higher and any earlier version of internet download manager prior to 6.19, the extension called IDM CC that is used to perform the browser integration will be incompatible with Firefox. If you are using IDM 6.20 or higher, you can integrate it with Firefox version 31.0 or 32.0 )Beta Version). Hence, make sure you are using the appropriate versions of both application, and initiate the following simple steps to get over with this issue. First, perform the uninstallation of IDM, and then reinstall the application. Please close all web browsers before starting the installation. You will hear a message stating that IDM has been successfully integrated to Firefox. restart your browser for the changes to take effect. On Sat, Aug 2, 2014 at 2:07 PM, P. Re: [AI] Unable to choose colour of an itom on flipkart website
the concern is not to identify the colour, rather it is to figure out how to access the list of available variants of the product pertaining to any particular colour by executing the corresponding option. In fact, this keystroke can't be helpful in recognizing the colour of the items since they are displayed in image. This keystroke only says the foreground and background colours of the text at the active cursor position. [AI] BBMP's death trap & blind man walking - Bangalore Mirrorwith pictureApart from all these, the Enable India should have contacted BBMP for closing the manhole. Such associations never take up the causes/issues of blind, instead, they are interested with donations/govt grants, surely carelessness on enable India is much more than BBMP. - Original Message - From: Timy Sebastian To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerningthe disabled. Descending from the steps and stretching his cane out to find his way on the road, Timy noticed his cane wasn't coming in contact with solid ground. But alas, it was too late to prevent that fall, said Timy's family members speaking to BM from Kerala. He fell headlong into the almost five-foot deep drain and broke his right arm. Hearing his shouts for help, the owner of a departmental store on the ground floor of the same building came running out and rescued Timy. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he underwent surgery and was hospitalised for almost five days. Since he has been advised bed rest for almost two months, Timy was brought back home to Kerala. The victim has also filed an FIR against the concerned BBMP officials with the Koramangala police, the family members added. The mishap occurred just two days after the High Court of Karnataka ruled that pavements are the exclusive domain of walkers. The court, on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city activists Jennifer Pinto and Priya Pinto, had directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to remove all encroachments on footpaths within the next three months. Specifically, the court empowered the civic agency to clear obstructions to make the city pedestrian-friendly. But looks like instead of clearing obstructions, BBMP seems to be putting them up, as seen in the unfortunate incident involving Timy. When contacted, Jennifer told BM, "Timy Sebastian's case indeed vindicates our stand. In fact the Association for the Visually Challenged had impleaded in our PIL. I appreciate Sebastian's decision to file a police complaint as people normally forget and move on. I think sooner than later the court must make BBMP responsible for such misha

Re: [AI] Unable to choose colour of an itom on flipkart website
flipkart website is not that accessible with the screen readers. You can accomplish maximum tasks though, but sometimes the contents are not identifiable. I also experienced a strange issue on several occasions when JAWS doesn't announce the block of text as links, buttons or whatever, but pressing enter on them would serve the purpose. therefore, the best thing I would recommend you to call their customer support at 1800420 and ask them to place the order on behalf of you. Please note that if you wish to make payment through credit or debit card, you cannot do that over phone of course. I think the cash on delivery service is offered across almost all major cities in India.
