Uber works although you will have to register your India phone number as
soon as it is ready. You can also pay cash to uber taxis now I understand.

If you intend to pay by card, Meru is not an option. I got caught out
recently as they have apparently stopped accepting cards.

Subject: Invitation for a talk by Professor Ravinder Barn (Royal Holloway
University of London)
To:

It is my pleasure to invite all of you to a talk by Professor Ravinder Barn
(Royal Holloway University of London) on the topic: *'Non-government
organisations and family intervention: Negotiating risk, power and
modernity*'.

The talk will be held at 11 A.M. on the 5th of January in the Seminar Hall
of the Department of Sociology, University of Delhi.

Although this talk is being organised as part of the MPhil course on
Rethinking family in contemporary societies, everyone interested is welcome
to attend.

A brief Abstract of the talk and a short biographical note about Professor
Barn follows.

Abstract

In this talk, Professor Barn will examine the role of non-government
organisations in the development and implementation of support structures
for families experiencing vulnerability and marginalisation. By drawing on
research carried out in London and Odisha (Barn & Das, 2015; Barn and
Puhan, 2016), an attempt will be made to identify key challenges in family
intervention approaches. In particular, the Maori practice of ‘family group
conferencing’, and ‘community-based child protection mechanisms’ will be
discussed in the context of socio-economic disadvantage, risk, power and
modernity.

Biography:Ravinder Barn is Professor of Social Policy in the School of Law,
Royal Holloway University of London. She is the author or editor of eight
books and over 85 journal papers or book chapters. Ravinder writes on race,
gender, social welfare, crime, and criminal justice. Her recent work on
sexual violence and criminal justice is among the top 10 'most read' in the
British Journal of Criminology (August 2015). Her research on child welfare
and migrant groups is highly regarded nationally and internationally. Her
latest book, published by Oxford University Press, analyses child welfare
systems in 11 countries to promote theoretical and empirical understandings
of contemporary concerns surrounding globalisation, migration, and child
rights.

Professor Barn is a mixed-methods researcher. Her academic base is
inter-disciplinary and spans social policy, sociology, social work, and
criminology.

[AI] The Times of India report: For disabled, divyang equals charity, By Amulya Gopalakrishnan

2016-01-04 Thread avinash shahi
Modi means well by suggesting the term divyang for the disabled but
can you beat bias with better words?
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/sunday-times/deep-focus/For-disabled-divyang-equals-charity/articleshow/50421459.cms?
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently suggested that people with
disabilities be called "divyang", he may have had the best intentions.
The word invests bodies with holiness (sacred body), rather than the
harsh "vikalang" (deformed body).

But many in the disability community agree that "divyang" is an epic
fail. Much like Gandhi's use of the word "harijan", it is imposed by a
seemingly benevolent outsider, it is condescending to those it
describes. The word "Dalit" on the other hand, chosen by them, builds
an assertive politics and community.

"We don't want charity, we are equal citizens," says Malini Chib, an
activist and writer now working at TCS, London, whose experience of
living with cerebral palsy inspired last year's film 'Margarita, with
a Straw'. A person with a disability is not just trying to fight
stigma, but also the sentimentality of others. They are not trying to
be inspiring or heroic, they want their due from an ableist world.
While the right term in Hindi needs to be found, "divyang is an
oversimplifying and patronising word," says Neelam Jolly, founder of
Vishwas, a school for children with disabilities.

Modi was, in fact, giving voice to an old fallacy - that the disabled
were somehow touched with divinity. Think of the Greek epics, where
disability is a mark of transgression, and also endowed with
compensating powers, like the blind seer Tiresias. Whether
Dhritarashtra or Sakuni, disability has negative connotations in the
Mahabharata. Research in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in the early
2000s showed that it was commonly considered a "divine curse" across
rural and urban India.

Through the centuries, there have been great changes in the way
disability is perceived - from anxious curiosity to exclusion to pity
to remedy - but only recently has it moved to how disabilities are
internally experienced. "Nothing about us without us" is a memorable
slogan of the disability rights movement. "Whether divyang or anything
else is not the point. It is that people who are disabled should
choose the words they want," says Amba Salelkar, activist and lawyer.
There are other problems with divyang - "it erases the entire gamut of
disabilities that aren't visible, like mental illnesses", she points
out.

Why words matter

People with little experience of exclusion often say, "Oh, I can't
keep up with this politically correct terminology", as though they're
passing fashions rather than a movement towards equality and
recognition. The women's movement, anti-caste movement, racial
minorities and other groups have always fought biased words with
better words. They know that language subtly shapes thought.

Sometimes, it is the weight of historical associations rather than the
inherent offensiveness of the word that make it intolerable. "My
grandfather was colored, my father was Negro, I am black," wrote the
American academic Henry Louis Gates Jr, describing a century of
transition. Though it is still used, studies prove that the word
"black" still evokes negative perceptions compared to
"African-American".

Sometimes, the insult is blatant - as when the word "gay" or "lame" or
"retard/tard" are used as pejoratives. Other times, the prejudice is
implicit; like the word "handicapped", which renders someone a passive
victim, a recipient of the world's help. In some cases, hurtful words
can be reclaimed by those they once insulted, turned over and worn
with pride, like "queer". In some US disability circles, some use the
word "crip" - as in crip theory and activism - but it is decidedly not
used by others.

Enabling change

Disability was once seen as an individual "illness". Now, it is seen
as a social and political problem, says Mithu Alur,
founder-chairperson of the Spastics Society of India, now called
ADAPT. The focus is on how the world treats persons with disability,
whether it disparages them as a problem that needs "solving", or
validates and accommodates them. Removing hurdles - in attitudes, in
buildings and cities, in school, work and state policy - would enable
everyone. Assistive technology gives a blind person the same
opportunities as a sighted person, accessible pavements remove
mobility constraints. "We are not touched by god, we are oppressed by
society and its lack of infrastructure," says Chib.

"Of course the word divyang doesn't understand this paradigm shift,
but nor do most people now scoffing at the word," says Salelkar.
"These are the same people who would do ultrasound scans to abort
babies with Down syndrome," she says. Seeking to eliminate the chances
of a disabled child is also an attempt to "normalise", to erase
"variety and vulnerability from the world", as the writer Andrew
Solomon puts it.

At some point in life, we are all likely to be di

[AI] guideline for web designing

2016-01-04 Thread Jagadish R
Dear axes Indians.
Warm greetings.

You can bring smile on many faces by providing following information.

1. Is there any guide line to design government websites in India?
2. If such guide lines exist, where can we find them?
3. Does any website speak about those guidelines?
4. If anyone of you got circulars with regard to the above mentioned
subject, kindly share.

Thanks and Regards.

With Airport metro, you won't be able to reach India Gate, will have
to work on some last mile connectivity options and you will have to
change a metro too. Prepaid taxi would be the better option.

[AI] Learning Braille and working in Leh: We don’t acknowledge the existence of the poor while enjoying our privileges By Vandana Shukla

2016-01-04 Thread avinash shahi
http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/spectrum/a-world-order-where-less-is-more/159822.html
You don’t need a Gordon Geeko to inform: “Greed, for lack of a better
word, is good”. The world we inhabit goads us to consume more. Bigger
is better and more is less; the billboards, TV ads and shopping malls
shriek, making one feel insignificant till one earns more to spend
more. But there are mutineers, who rebel against the diktat of
consumerism, the ones whose shopping cart is filled with ideals, not
commodities. These warriors counter the economic terrorism with their
armour of empathy and compassion. Collective good is better than
individual growth to these followers of the inner voice. In their new
world order — less is more.
Mala (name changed) spent the winter months of 2014 in Leh, as a
volunteer at Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre, teaching the
resident nuns English and maths. There was no compulsion for her to
live in Leh, in sub-zero temperatures. She worked on Braille, to help
the visually challenged get more reading material and established a
maths lab for the students of Mahabodhi Residential School. The lab
hundreds of students who come from the poorest families of the region
that remain inaccessible for most part of the year. She worked through
winters when the local students and staff, were away on vacation.
Had it not been for someone who knows her closely, one would never
have come to know that she comes from an affluent background. To enter
her home in Delhi one needs to clear a few levels of security . In
Leh, she lived on a bare minimum and works for 10-12 hours a day; not
to make money or a career. She is driven by love that does not seek
reciprocation. “In summers I worked with an NGO in Delhi, it used to
be so hot I would pour water on my clothes to keep cool. This time, I
wanted to stretch my limits — physical, mental and emotional — by
spending the winter in Leh,” she says. In her spiritual quest,
‘spiritual’ does not lead to an abstract quest for God, it is an
endeavour to relate to humanity at a deeper level where the evolution
of the self translates into betterment of the fellow beings. The world
she has opted to work for — after earning a degree from one of the Ivy
League universities — is not competitive. It grows with sharing.
Adopting poverty or working with poor is not an act of romance for a
few young and materially privileged men and women, there is more to
it. This, in a way, is an attempt on their part to come to terms with
the soul-crushing poverty around, which most of us walk past with
insouciance.
Narayanan Krishnan was a bright, young, award-winning chef with a
five-star hotel group. He was short-listed for an elite job in
Switzerland in 2002. But a quick family visit to Manglore, his
hometown, to visit a temple before leaving for Switzerland changed it
all. It was a moment of self-discovery/ empathy/ compassion — he is
not sure what he felt when he saw an old man eating his own human
waste, under a bridge. “It shook me to my nerve on witnessing the
power of human hunger. A spark triggered within me, I went to a nearby
hotel and asked what was available; they had only idlis. I took the
idlis to the old man. I had never seen a human being eat so hungrily.
It made me cry. Like any other youth I had a great desire to work
overseas, but this incident changed my destiny. I decided to feed the
hungry than cooking for the already over-fed people. Feeding people
who don’t really care what they eat seemed futile,” says Krishnan. He
has been feeding more than 450 mentally ill and uncared, poor people,
three meals a day ever since that encounter with the hungry, old man,
since the last 14 years. Krishnan’s parents are middle-class
government employees. After the initial shock, they welcomed his
decision seeing his perseverance and determination. Letting go of
their dream of seeing him “well- settled” was not easy though. Their
son’s endeavour was a spontaneous reaction to heart-breaking poverty
that exists amid affluence in our society. They developed trust in his
mission and they themselves started feeding the poor on the streets.
With little savings and support from his family, what began as feeding
the poor programme took the shape of Akshaya Trust Organisation in
2003.
His story caught people’s imagination and help poured in. Social
media also helped. “I strongly believe that no good cause will ever
stop for want of resources, if a good cause has to stop for want of
resources, the cause is not good enough,” believes Krishnan.
Eventually, Akshaya Trust built a home for the mentally disabled
persons who are discarded by family. But the reputation of Akshaya
took a plunge in 2013, when a 23- year- old mentally challenged woman
ran away from Akshaya, blaming rape. Often, suspicion lurks about the
intent behind selfless deeds in a culture that glorifies material
growth. Krishnan says he took it in his stride, “To my understanding,
any good deed in this country will be

Re: [AI] Unable to uninstall istartsurf from Mozilla

2016-01-04 Thread Bikram
Hi,

If the "Remove" button is disabled for certain add-ons, you may need to
uninstall them from Firefox Safe Mode. Please consider implementing the
following steps to get this done:
1. Open Firefox, and use the Alt key to access the menu bar options.
2. under the "help" menu, choose the option called "Restart with Add-ons
Disabled…" and press enter to activate the same.
3. The "Restart with Add-ons Disabled" dialog box appears. Click the
"restart" button when asked if you really want to disable all add-ons and
restart.
Now Firefox will start up with the Safe Mode dialog.
4. In the Firefox Safe Mode dialog, click on the "Start in Safe Mode"
button.
Note that you can also start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift
key while pressing enter on the Firefox icon.
5. Once Firefox has started in Safe Mode, try removing the add-on again,
and then restart Firefox in order for the changes to get reflected.
If the above step doesn't fix the problem, try to manually remove the
add-on by following the steps below:
1. Select the "troubleshooting information" option under the "help" menu.
2. in order to determine which folder or XPI file corresponds to the
extension you want to uninstall, in the troubleshooting information tab,
find the level 2 heading that says "extension".
3. Now you would encounter a table consisting of several columns which
represent specific technical information about the installed add-ons in
your browser. Find the extension you want to remove and note the string in
the ID column.
4. Use tab or quick navigation keys to locate the "Show Folder" button, and
activate it.
5. Once your profile folder opens, find the folder named "extension".
6. Inside that folder, brows for the folder that corresponds to the name or
ID string of the add-on you wish to remove.
7. Now delete the particular folder and all of its contents.
8. Restart Firefox and check to see if the add-ons are removed.
Hope that helps

2016-01-04 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
There they have asked extent of disability 40 to 100% blind and 40 to 100% low
vision.

Now, what is 40% low vision, and 100% low vision, and how do we distinguish
from 40% blind and so on with all variants of percentage in between?

Don't take me wrong, these all are my genuine curiosities for a student of
mine who can see something and has got a 40% certificate but is confused
whether she is low vision or blind...

i fully endorse the views of Mr. Satguru. this kind of news is mere
show off to ostentate the celebration of the event by media.

if they believe this as a real capability, then they would surely
provide him the permanent employment like other news reader in their
team. i feel there nothing unique done.
thanks,
