[AI] Clio app adds new augmented reality feature

2021-01-04 Thread Ronald Jason Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

FYI:

A new version of the Clio app uses augmented reality, allowing users

to pan their smartphone across the landscape to see historic photos

and click on them to learn more.

What is Clio?

Clio, named after the mythological Greek muse of history, is both an

educational website and mobile application that allows users to

experience guided tours of local landmarks, actively displaying

information about objects and locations as it goes.

Being used at nearly 160 universities across the US and having

acquired roughly a thousand completed guided tours, Clio's pool of

information is constantly being updated with publicly sourced

information.

How does the new augmented reality feature work?

Using the phone's camera in real time, the app now makes use of

augmented reality to deliver historical information about the user's

community to them. Upon accessing the app's beta features, users will

be able to pan around and witness thumbnails pop up on their screen,

which they can then press to access further information.

The program is the product of David Trowbridge, an associate professor

of history at Marshall University, and his close friend David

Wingfield, the main developer of the program. Trowbridge compared it

to the popular mobile game Pokemon Go, saying the experience was the

"Pokemon of history."

"I've been thinking of how to make use of this technology in a

practical way for several years," said Trowbridge. "Often times when

this kind of technology is used, we just adopt it without thinking if

we really should."

Are there any additional features?

Additionally, Clio can now provide guided directions toward landmarks

and selected areas, displaying arrows that point the user in the

direction of the destination. These directions can either be

street-by-street, or can simply point them in the straight direction

of the destination.

Alongside this feature came an option for visually impaired users,

increasing the size of the arrows by a substantial degree to help

guide them on their path. Trowbridge said he was inspired by the

difficulty some faced while attempting to track the marker on Google

maps.

How much does it cost and is the new feature available on both Android and
iOS?

The update for Clio's mobile app was specifically released for IOS

users, and will not currently be available for other devices. Despite

this, a version for Android is already in development.

Being a nonprofit program and completely free to use, Clio is funded

by public donors, as well as donations from the National Council on

the Humanities, of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

More information about Clio, its available services and how someone

can submit information to its datascape can be found at the program's

website,

[AI] Look to Speak accessibility app uses your eyes to communicate

2021-01-04 Thread Ronald Jason Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Google's newest experimental app allows people who might not be able to
speak out loud to express themselves verbally with their eyes.

How does the Look to Speak app work?

The Look to Speak app works by using machine learning models to track the
movements of users' eyes. It presents two columns of common words and
phrases, and glancing to the left or right narrows the selection down until
the chosen option is selected, at which point the app speaks the word(s) out
loud.

Look to Speak delivers its core functionality without presenting too many
additional features. Users can personalize the list of options presented by
the app, letting people more accurately express their own voice by
customizing words and phrases. The eye gaze sensitivity settings can also be
tweaked to account for individual needs and preferences.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK8sQmJBp8GCxrOtXWBpyEA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3oNaq2Cugs=emb_title

Does the app replace expensive assistive machines?

Google isn't positioning the app as a way to completely replace more
expensive assistive machines. Instead, it's intended to go where those
devices can't; since Look to Speak runs solely on a smartphone, it's more
convenient and less costly to take advantage of than many other
alternatives.

Is the app available for all Android devices?

The app is available for free to everyone with a device running Android 9.0
and above.

Where can we download the app?Download it from the Play Store here.

[AI] How to use iPhone's App Library on iOS 14

2021-01-04 Thread Ronald Jason Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

FYI:

For IOS users.

A new feature introduced in iOS 14 is the iPhone App Library. The App
Library automatically sorts your apps into folders and also offers an
alphabetical directory where you can search for any app you have downloaded.
This takes away the difficulty of searching through your Home screen for
lesser-used apps, and offers helpful suggestions when you're not sure which
of your apps would best suit your purpose.

How to Access the iPhone App Library

Swipe to the last page of apps on your Home screen (3 finger swipe for
VoiceOver users).
Swipe to the left one more time (3 finger swipe for VoiceOver users).

Now you are in the App Library and can use it a couple of ways.

Browse the App Folders

Scroll down to see all the groupings your iPhone has created for you.

Overall, the categories are fairly intuitive, ranging from Recently Added to
topics such as Social, Creativity, and Productivity. Some may feel a little
off though, such as grouping Reading with Reference (weather apps, news
apps, etc.) instead of with Entertainment, so take some time to familiarize
yourself with what goes where.

Use the Search Function

If you already know what you're looking for, the Search function will help
pull it up quickly. To search by name just:

Select the Search bar at the top of your screen.
Type in the name of the app you're looking for.

Alternately, you can use the alphabet scroller on the right side of the
screen to search for an app alphabetically. You can also pull this up by
swiping down when you have your App Library open.

[AI] RE: How To Sort Out Your Android OS 11 Talkback Issues On A Samsung Phone

2021-01-04 Thread Marco Curralejo
Hello everyone,

Welcome to episode 67 of the Blind Tech Guys. We wish all of our listeners a
happy new year and trust that 2021 will be a far better year for all of you
than 2020 was.

Main Discussion On Today's Episode

Kirt discusses getting Talkback back on Samsung devices running Android 11
and takes us through the process of how to get this done by using NVDA on a
Windows PC and how to set things up to run smoothly on a Samsung device.

Kirt used
This tutorial on xda developers to uninstall Samsung Talkback. For
convenience the specific commands for removing Samsung Talkback are listed
below.

1.Extract the developer tools to an easy location, plug your phone into
a USB port on your computer, enable USB debugging in your phone developer
options and grant your computer permission as directed by the XDA tutorial.
If prompted make sure you change your connection from charging only to file
transfer mode.

2.Open the "platform tools" inside the ADB folder you extracted, press
shift +f10 and you'll either be able to run the command prompt or power
shell. Either works.

3.Launch the developer bridge.

4.Command prompt: adb devices

5.powershell: .\adb devices

6.Open the adb shell:

7.Command prompt: adb shell

8.Powershell: .\adb shell

9.Uninstall Samsung Talkback - He couldn't get this to copy and paste in
powershell so you may have to type this out:

10. pm uninstall -k -user 0 com.samsung.android.accessibility.talkback

11. If you get the "success" message, Samsung Talkback has been uninstalled.
If your Talkback was on during the uninstall you may need to turn it off
before stock Talkback shows up in your installed services. He used
Commentary screen reader for that part.

To listen, head on over to this week's episode of the pod,
where you can also easily subscribe in
your favourite podcast player, or simply ask your smart speaker to "play the

Warm regards,

extraordinary journey.
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: World Braille Day is observed on January
4 every year to mark the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the
inventor of Braille language. Born on January 4, 1809 in France,
Braille is credited for developing Braille language for blind and
visually impaired people.
The first World Braille Day was celebrated on January 4 in 2019 after
it got approval from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) via a
proclamation in November 2018.
Who was Louis Braille and why he is credited for developing a
launguage for blind and visually impaired people?
Louis Braille is credited for developing a language for visually
impaired so that they can also read and write. Braille, a French man,
had lost his vision at the age in an accident. However, the accident
couldn't stop him as he continued his studies and obtained a
scholarship to France's Royal Institute for Blind Youth.
When he was at France's Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which has
been renamed as National Institute for Blind Youth now, Braille
started working on a system so that visually impaired people can read
and write easily. Source:

A National Sample Survey Exercise pointed out that about 5% of the
total population in India sleeps without two square meals a day. The
Public Distribution System (PDS) later revamped to the Targeted Public
Distribution System (TDPS) aimed at providing food and grains to the
needy. To make the TPDS more beneficial and more focussed towards the

[AI] request for the assistance.

2021-01-04 Thread Bandi Sudhakar
hello
iam sudhakar from  hyderabad
iam working on   my desertation   for mphil
on assistive technologies
so in this regard  I want  the sources  for the following questions
please reply me of line  or letme know  from where  I can get related  info,
questions are as follows:
How many softwares are there for the visually challenged.
What are the types of softwares.
The origin and history of each of  these softwares, how they have developed.
Who have produced. What was their interest.
Where it was developed, all these.
What was the medium of the softwares, why the softwares were developed.
Who are the persons or the company involved in the development of the software.
Were there any visually challenged persons would in the development of
softwares.
Why did normal people wanted to develop softwares for reading. Are
these softwares are available or paid softwares.
If the free versions are there what are its limitations.
If the paid versions are there, what opportunities it provide.
Look at the development of each software, important changes.  Software
development is a long process so what changes it under gone over a
period from the stage of beginning  till what is present nowand
reasons for such changeswhat are the important changes occurred in its
trajectory or in its development process and what are the reasons for
such changes.
How many softwares have gone out of circulation or extinct. They have
developed  but over a period they became extinct. What are the reasons
for there extinction.
Why some softwares have become successful.

In the second part:
What softwares are available in indiafor the visually challenged are
these softwares available visually challenged or others also.
How companies are moving towards audio versions like ammezonalexasiri
in ios devices.
So they are developing this, are they looking at visually challenged
persons in mind or others.
So when you are looking this works  raise some sociological questions
like what class category, they can afford, cost, then digital haves
and haves nots what about them.

Who can access and who cannot. Who own mobile phone and who do not
own,  who own softwares, is it possible for the softwares to shared
between the people. How if they cannot shared and how they do.
Now we will do crack versions so we crack and use pirated versions. So
how it is taking place.
Then what medium it is available. Language is a barrier  is language
becoming a barrier.
How google translater or other translaters versions  are helping.
Then rural urban differences,  then accessibility interms of class.
Ease of working,
Comfortable.
People are moving towards verbal softwares rather than texting and
all. So why this is going so.
Then I asked to look at blogs, popular articals and articals in
disability studies collection.

You have to do  on disabilities, assistive technologies, theoretical
perspectives and assistive technologies for visually challenged.
Then indian context what are the studies which are being done.
Then status of visually challenged among the  PWDS in the country.
What is their employment situation. What is education background. Who
are they men and women  coming from different background, economic
background etc..

Re: [AI] Info on a good electric shaver.

2021-01-04 Thread Sharad Philip
Hi
My personal recommendation would be for the Braun cruiser - available on amazon
and reasonably priced - under 4K i think .
It does not hurt when shaving and gives a very clean close shave better than
any razor i have ever used. It also has a trimmer function but no heads can be
attached- hence not ideal for styling a beard. Best used for a dry shave it
only has one removable part and collects the hair within the blade head which
then can be easily disposed. Recommend not going for it in stores as it was
being sold at MRP of 7k nearly. It uses the same technology as the Series 7 or
8 or 9 from Braun which are however priced around 40K!
I have been using it for the last 2.5 years.
Hope this helps
Sincerely
Sharad

Re: [AI] Info on a good electric shaver.

2021-01-04 Thread anirudh rao
hi Mr. Vishal,
in my view, the traditional plastic shavers are the best when it comes
to clean shave.
any shave would hurt the skin and hence, trimming would be the best option.
I have completely left shaving now and only trim.
shaving makes the beard rough and gradual loss/decay of the skin makes
us less handsome to look.
my views anyway.

 hello there,
if you are asking for the trimmers, all work in the same way.
I do not think that it needs any extra accessibility features.
