At 11:33 AM 12/10/2011, you wrote: Of disclosing 'disability' before marriage There was a time when my mother and sister were searching a bride for me. I had insisted to have my visual 'disability' (as others call it) be totally disclosed. People initially showed interest and willingness in my proposal, but the moment my Retinitis Pigmentosa-caused blindness was disclosed, either they did not carry the issue further or politely tendered their refusals. My parents and sister used to feel sorry for this, and they found it difficult to tell me that I again am being refused for the fear that I will get disheartened. But I had not committed a guilty or shameful act due to which I was facing rejections, so I saw no reason to get disheartened. Indeed, the fact that people were interested in me until my blindness was disclosed was a positive point for me. I have not caused my blindness; it is caused due to reasons beyond my control, then why to feel sorry over it? Yet, I must confess that sometimes I used to feel dejected, but there was light at the end of the tunnel. We had a very old friendship with a family. They used to frequent us often, and once all of a sudden my mother kept my marriage proposal to them. They gladly agreed, the mother of my supposed wife merrily telling us What is the use of asking? My daughter is yours, we know your son, he is our child, everything is settled. Both the families came in the mood to have a great celebration. Marriage celebrations or their preparations seem to be so divine that we feel as if everyone, even our bloodthirsty enemies, are loving and blessing us in their hearts. The noteworthy thing was that we had visited each other so much that it was clear that they know about my blindness. Moreover, my sister too has RP, and they had helped her often. Yet my sight problem was impressed upon them. But they just did not listen to us and even told my sister not to talk about that issue again as if it was hurting them. Marriage is a big thing. Everything was clear but I felt some uneasiness and requested to talk with the girl because I did not want to take chances. We went to meet them. It turned out that they were not taking my sight problem seriously because they were thinking that I have enough sight to do my work on my own. For instance, they knew that I work on computers and move around the city and out of the city independently (at the time these talks were taking place I was out of station). But the astonishing thing was that they could not realise that in the course of time I have become blind. I told her mother point-blank: I can only see light. I am looking towards your face because of your voice. I use screen reading technology to work on computers. And I use a cane when I walk alone. I cannot see. She gave a pause. That pause clearly expressed that she was broken. (Later, I came to know from my mother that her hands were shaking at that time.) Then I talked with the girl who had already known about the new condition I was in. She sounded perplexed and disinclined. Their reaction, though, was normal. Anyone would have reacted in a similar manner after knowing about my blindness. My marriage date was to be fixed, but now they needed time and told us that they were unaware that I had lost my sight. I thought that the game was over. But I was wrong. Days passed. One good evening, the mother of the girl-who-could-be-my-wife came to our home and started showering praises on me. She talked to me in a tearfully sympathetic tone, though I had not needed it. Apologising from her expressions and tone, she told us that her daughter was not willing to marry me. I was thankful because if this condition had disclosed after marriage, I would have been in great trouble. At my home, I gave a small party to my friends, and called it 'In the name of my cancelled marriage'! It was meant to truly celebrate life; it was not one of those Bollywood parties in which bottles are uncorked, there is false enjoyment all around, and the main character ineptly tries to forget his grief in the make-believe. Thankfully, we really enjoyed our party, and since my room is quite separated, we made a lot of noise until the early hours of the morning. Days passed

Bear in mind, when typewriters were invented, women were required to furnish a medical certificate that they are fit enough to operate typewriter. Now, is not it ridiculous? A few years ago, a girl from chandrapur found a place in Guinness book for being the fastest typist at the age of 7 and typing 170WPM. So, if apart from general undertakings if anything else is required by way of disability, then it must be established by rules. And rules also can be modified to be in sync with relevance of disability for a particular transactions. For instance, maharashtra government has not identified any post of lecturer in any subject but music for blind, does anyone with minimum rational capacity see any logic in this? So, let us be logical, and evaluate the implications of any disability and its consequent relevance in formulating the rules for any matter. So, practice of lowly officials framing their arbitrary rules needs to be severely dealt with any possible manner. Like Doctor Lahane an eye specialists feels that totally blind are not capable to discharge many of jobs identified in central list, and so has debarred them from undertaking them in maharashtra by committees and issuing so many GRs. I know cases are being fought by our honorable members for it, on the ground there is hardly any change. So, I sincerely feel we must adopt all and every means to have sound laws and rules in place and then curb anybody except legislature from tempering with them. But when brands indulge in whatever they want in order to maximise profit or to corner people of certain sections of society, only talking about choice would not be politically correct. I am quite happy with SBI, but does that mean that I should keep mum and remain complacent when someone, not me, is denied or is illogically imposed by the PNB, or any other bank for that matter? When a precedence gets established, particularly a wrong one, it does not take much time to spread and be widely accepted. The same applies to the precedence of denial. A neat two-km road has replaced the stony path connecting it to highway. The thorny gando bawal shrubs that dotted the roadside are now being cleared regularly and Rangpar is getting the facelift. But, getting all this done was not at all easy for Ratna, whose family lives below poverty line. Besides all the paper work, he even had to suffer humiliation by officials whenever he raised questions about development. The documents I got using RTI showed that many works registered as completed in the papers were actually never taken up. In 2008, I used RTI to know how many schemes had panchayat implemented and how much money was spent on each work, said Ratna. Re: [AI] Committee to draft new disability law.
I agree completely Kanchan There are loads of suggestions to chose form for the committee. As far as choice of people is concerned. It'll never be ideal. But, yes new law mans a very long process. Even if its amending the earlier law..there are going to be so many changes that it almost will become a new one. For the last 4 years consultations have been going on and recommendations have been going to the Ministry. If they take a lot of the suggestions in, we will have a good law. Once the draft is ready we will see it on the Ministry's website and we can then criticize it add to it or delete it. If it is not good enough we can restart the process. The disabled world has changed. Many people know their minds and rights and many people have a voice and know how to use it. Hopefully somebody with some sense has chosen the committee. They had planned to submit a 17-point charter of demands. The trip was organised by Paschim Banga Rajya Pratibandhi Sammilani and West Bengal's Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Kanti Ganguly, who is also the president of the organisation. The Minister was also travelling with the group. Speaking to The Hindu over phone from Delhi, Mr. Ganguly alleged that ten persons had fallen ill and had to hospitalised as there was no water or electricity in the coaches. The train that left Howrah on Sunday night was scheduled to arrive in New Delhi at Monday midnight. Instead it got delayed for almost over 10 hours due to unknown reasons and reached the destination only on Tuesday afternoon. This resulted in missing the appointment fixed up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said. Mr. Ganguly alleged that repeated requests to railway officials for help at various stations en route fell on deaf ears. Calling it an inhuman torture on the differently-abled persons, he said he would write to the Prime Minister about the incident and also seek compensation from the Railways. Asked if he would seek Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee's intervention, Mr. Ganguly replied in the negative, saying she never gives importance to such issues. Meanwhile, the Eastern Railway authorities here said the train started journey with adequate water and there was no problem of electricity either though they did not deny that the train got delayed. [AI] gift of a free air bound experience by Air india for visually impaired girls
It was a dream come true for the 7 visually impaired girls from NAB India Centre for Blind Women, Delhi who were gifted free air travel from Delhi to Chandigarh and back on 22nd March 2010.(A total of 10 people with 3 escorts) Apart from the joy ride, the hospitality and care of Air India staff were heart warming. The crew was delighted to take extra care of the girls' experience. The pilot, Captain Dhillon bore in mind these passengers and made special announcements during the flight to apprise them about the facts of the flight (in hindi which he was not very comfortable with). And the ground staff were almost on their toes to make it a smooth but memorable experience for all of us (me being one of the escorts in the team). The girls were elated and would probably never forget this life time experience, thanks to Air India Shalini Khanna Hony. A cane without any add ons cost more than Rs. 50 these days. Unfortunately these wonder devices seldom get out of the Labs. Harish. - Original Message - From: mukesh jain mukesh.jai...@gmail.com To: accessindia accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2009 9:33 PM Subject: [AI] IITIANS Design better Stick for the Blind There is good news for blind from the innovative labs of Indian Institute of Technology [IIT] Kanput. A walking stick has been designed to enable the handicapped walk with a lot more confidence. Crossing roads, climbing stairs and moving about in general will be much easier with this stick in their hand. The most encouraging aspect of the indigenous creation is going to be its cost, a meager Rs 50 or so. While, an imported one anywhere costs between Rs 1500 to 2000. The stick is battery-run and made of metal. It is equipped with an electronic device, witch indicates obstructions, if any, in the user’s path. Three B-tech students [electrical and electronic department]Amit Kumar, Rajesh Jaiswal and Saurabh Ranjan, who have designed the Stick, said the electronic device gave a warning signal from a distance of about 30 cm and the range could be increased further as per requirements. Dr. Amit Ray, the project guide, said the Stick gave out a beep to indicate an object stone or a vehicle and helped the blind manoeuvre his way. Explaining the mechanism,Dr. Ray said, “Our students have designed a circuit witch has a sensor that sends a warning beep in case something comes in the way”. Dr. Ray also said that the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India [ALIMCO] authorities had asked IIT technologists to design this kind of walking stick for the blind about two years ago. But they could not come out with this earlier as as the technocrats were exploring other possible applications of the stick, for example, its use in darkness and to measure the depth of potholes.IIT had earlier designed toys for spastic children. Re: [AI] guidance required regarding the training for visually impaired for VI women.
Well if trainings have to be started for women, just talking about it would not help. It depends on resources, vision and kind of target profile of women. One can definitely guide but a visit would be required and an observation of a women's centre would definitely help. I'll be happy to give further guidance and any other help that's possible. Re: [AI] ATMs for Visually Impaired
ATM for visually challenged ICICI Bank has launched Special ATM machines for visually Challenged People. This has been made possible by voice guided system and specially made function display keys which guide a Visually Challenged person to operate the ATM . Through the use of Headphones plugged into a jack on the terminal, customer hears a voice that guides the customer through the transaction. The ATM also gives choice of languages in which a Customer wants to hear Instructions. Once the language is selected, tha ATM guides the customer to insert his ATM card in the slot, which has one 'pip' (a raised, rounded button) above it. The ATM then guides the customer to enter his PIN through the numeric keypad, which again has one 'pip' on the number 5 (as is available generally on telephones/mobiles). For picking up the cash that is presented to him, the ATM guides customers to the slot on which there are two 'pips'. Once the cash is taken, the customer is directed to take back the card and pull out the receipt from the slot, which has three 'pips'. These ATMs are equipped with Video Surveillance devices. Regular customers can also use this ATM under normal course. Currently ATMs for Visually Challenged are available at the following two locations Venkatesh Meher, Ghole Road, Shivajinagar, Pune 411 005 Ground Floor, Kala Academy, Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi,Mumbai - 400 028.
